Solid restaurant.
Small, family style Chinese. Don't worry if you don't know what you want. Tell them it's your first time and they'll bring out all the good stuff. It came out to about $70 per person including drinks eating this way. A little pricey for Chinese but it's San Francisco....

My husband and I gave this place a try despite the low rating we saw on Yelp. The restaurant was one of many in Chinatown, and gave all of the visuals and feels of an Asian eatery. The food was delicious, but the service was absolutely awful!! We were confused as to who was our server as there were several different people approaching our table. Each person was very impatient and just overall rude. The menu was not explained to us, and we ordered a chicken dish without knowing it did not come with rice. The entree was just sat onto our table and the server quickly whisked away. We had to "flag down" someone to ask for rice and she seemed to be very annoyed by the request. In summary we felt as though the servers were annoyed by each and every thing we asked for. I observed them doing this at other tables as well. We should have left, but the food was very good. Would I dine here again? Probably not and I would not recommend based on the service alone. It was like eating your favorite meal served to you on the lid of a garbage can.

Spent the weekend in SF and had the most amazing food and experience @houseofnankingsf We are fans of the show on food network and watching chef Peter Fang's love for cooking. Today we got lucky to not only meet chef Peter, we also got to try his amazing food! I mentioned we were fans of the show and he sat us down and asked if we trusted him to choose our menu. OF COURSE WE DID! We had the most amazing experience and the food was 10/10! He came out to check on us with every dish we were served, to make sure we were enjoying the food. If you ever have a chance to try his restaurant I would 100 % recommend!

The famous sesame chicken was overcooked and dry the table side fried rice under seasoned and bland. Does not live up to the hype. The small food stalls on Stockton street serve authentic delicious food at a fraction of the cost of House of Nanking.

They need to update the prices on their website as they have significantly gone up. I ordered for take out today and I was wondering if I got charged twice. I went back there later that day just to inquire and one of the staff confirmed that the price on their website is old. The other staff was rude and just told me that everything went up. Probably didn't really care since this place is just a tourist trap.

They need to update the prices on the website as they have significantly increased. You are left wondering if you got charged twice when paying the bill when you pick up your order for take out.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food and amazing service.
I was seated at a table immediately. The ambiance is great. I ordered the mogu chicken and the pork dumplings they were both great. totally coming back again. make sure to visit if you are in town.

It's pretty at authentic and it's pretty good. The fish soup is delicious but too much for one person. It's enough for 4 people. I learned the hard way. I ordered pork spare ribs (not on the menu) and they were the best pork spare ribs I've ever had! Delicious!
Be the first to ReplySizzling Rice soup was delicious.
Pork belly and cabbage was adequate, at best, but very oily. Baby bok choy was extremely sugary and inedible. The beef dish never arrived. We've eaten here 4 times over 30 years but can now say we can't go back. 3 times were excellent but today I would have been happier at Taco Bell. Sad:(
Be the first to ReplyThe service was the worst I have ever had.
The waitress was so rude that ruined our food, which was already regular.

We shared everything and couldn't have been happier. The flavors were intense and robust without being too salty. A local friend recommended this restaurant and I'm so very glad she did. It was crowded, which is always a good sign, and the food came out really fast. Service was excellent. We'll be back!
Be the first to ReplyEhhhh, everything was cold, super sour, and or salty.
It pains me to say this, but if it wasn't for the decent service, this might be one of the worst Chinese restaurants in the bay food wise. =.(Potstickers were hard and leathery. The "HONK" peanut sauce was very vinegary.Shrimp pockets were the size of your palm but only had a tiny shrimp inside. The wonton skin used just tasted like oil. The same Honk sauce was very vinegary and not very peanuty.Melt-in-your-mouth calamari was battered and fried. It was soggy and swimming in oil and lemon vinegar sauce. Sorry, fried food should not be floating. It was also excessively salty and sour.Sesame chicken was supposed to be sweet with a little bit of tang. You guessed it, it was salty and sour without any sweetness. All the batter was falling off the chicken too as it was so drenched in that salty sour sauce.Like some people mentioned, the tea was the best thing here.Overall, the food was terrible. The food wasn't handled with care and some items just looked like slop tossed into a bowl. If you look through the yelp photos, you can totally see a wide variations of the same dish. Some look nicely plated, others look like a mess. I'm fine with this if this was a hole in wall, but when some dishes are crossing the $25 mark I will start scrutinzing. I'm not sure if they were having a bad day or this is how it is suppose to taste like.2 stars as the service was good even tho the food was terrible.

I was looking forward to the gluten free experience based on previous reviews. Arrived around 5 pm or so and it wasn't too busy. I'm the only gluten-free person in my family but hubby and son agreed to eat all gluten-free meal because I said the restaurant would bring out dishes for us. Well, we were handed the menu and I said I'm gluten free. The older lady tells me order the gf items on the menu. I said what about other items? So I ordered green beans that she said could be gluten free, shrimp and apple, mogu beef, and calamari. She asked if we wanted white rice, I said yes. She walked away and two minutes later our green beans came out, then the other dishes, but no rice so another lady asked if we wanted rice. I said yes. So service here, not so great, but I don't care if your food is really good. Well, for the price I paid... No, not really. It was okay. Calamari was described as melt in your mouth. I wouldn't say that. There were maybe only 8 shrimp in the shrimp dish. Three people, four dishes and three cups of tea came out to $100 and we weren't full. We ate all of our food though because we were hungry. It's fine, but my expectations were higher after reading reviews about them making food according to what you like.

Was visiting SF, and had to stop in to try the famous kung pao where are you chicken, which was delicious. We also got the fried rice which wasn't amazing but the table side service was very entertaining. Everyone was very nice and it was very tiny and cramped, but we enjoyed the food and service.

Wow. Could eat here everyday and enjoy a family style feast. Skip the menus and let the staff order your meal. In this case the owner Mrs Fang picked 5 amazing dishes that were served in perfect succession. Soup, hot and flavorful, Short ribs, fried rice prepped table side and served in fluffy mounds. Crowded with locals and tourists yet service was like we were the only ones here.

Everything was great, from the seating, service and food, not one thing to complain about. We were quickly seated during rush hour, and the waitresses were pretty busy racing from table to table as it was packed, but we did get all the orders in easily, and we got recommendations along the way through ordering. I think everything we ordered was perfect, we got a couple of different dumplings and chicken dishes. So good!

I've eaten at Chinese restaurant around the world. I reckon I've been to over a thousand. The quality and consistency of the food itself is top notch. Let the servers and chefs order for you to get the best items if you're a newbie. I must say the service is "as expected". Be forewarned, you're coming here for the food not the service.
Be the first to ReplyI've been here twice and the second time hit the spot! This
I've been here twice and the second time hit the spot! This restaurant is actually a really popular restaurant to eat at in North Beach. The first time I came here it was relatively busy and the food wasn't so good, it didn't have much flavor and I was disappointed because my friends raved about how amazing this place was.The second time I came back which was recently, the food tasted so much better. I usually eat the house fried rice with chili oil but because it had so much flavor this time, I didn't really need it! I'm very picky about where I get fried rice from because it's something so simple to make I can make it at home but I knew I had to give this restaurant another try. I'm a very big senses person so having an apple slice in my steam bun made me question my tastebuds, sure enough it more than hit the spot! The steam bun bao comes on a bun, with a slice of crispy pork belly, apple slice, cilantro and a sauce. Took my first bite and the whole concoction was like an explosion in my mouth! The flavors were there, the pork belly was super crispy and the sauce is amazing. The ambiance is just like any other Asian restaurant, small and busy. I believe the quality of the food depends on how busy they are. When I first came the restaurant was completely packed and I did not like how my food tasted. On this second run, we were seated right away and it wasn't busy at all. My food had so much more flavors, I'm glad I gave it a second chance. I look forward to returning and trying all of their other popular items, especially the tea that comes with a blossoming flower and or herbs. The receipt reflects prices of what I got, not only was the food good but I would also say affordable.

Was so excited to return after Covid for their sesame chicken and other dishes. Very chaotic service. One male waiter was really cool and nice but the other lady messed up our order causing me to eventually flag her down and get the 2 missing items. Ten minutes later. Worst of all the beloved chicken was cooked in too hot of grease and was burnt as was the eggplant /potato dish. Szechuan chicken finally arrived and was fine. Also $25 for a large sake is a joke. Especially for cheap sake. Sadly I can never return. Too many choices. Nanking you deserve a spanking.
