Phenomenal atmosphere with excellent service and memorable food.
Based on a recommendation from our tour guide on the NYC bus tour, we ventured north for the first time. To do so, we took the subway, again a first, and found using Apple Pay on our phones was slick. The restaurant is right off of a subway stop. We booked with OpenTable, arrived early, and were seated immediately near the back by the kitchen. The restaurant was a mixture of rush shadow and pockets of light. Tables were close together and the babble of many conversations was loud enough that we needed to lean into each other in order to communicate. We did not mind this and found the environment stimulating. A DJ kept the sound rolling but not in a way that was distracting. The walls were adorned with a variety of media, including posters, paintings, text, hats, and other objects. After telling the waitress that this was my first experience with ‘soul food’ and looking for guidance, she recommended the chicken and waffle. It arrived with a tangy -spicy yellow sauce form the chicken and a sweet syrup (not maple syrup) for the waffle. The chicken was juicy inside and very crispy on the outside. The skin came off in succulent chips that I could dip in the sauce. I started eating with a knife and fork but soon gave in to using my fingers, which made the experience that much better. The waffle was tasty, with a hint of cinnamon, but not remarkable outside the fact that it offered a juxtaposition to the savoury chicken. If you are looking for a lively and intimate restaurant with delicious soul food, this is the place for you. Easy to access off the subway (Red 2 or 3 line) with quick service, this is a must ‘stop’ for new travellers to New York.

Just amazing! We came for the Sunday Gospel Brunch - everything was fabulous! - we all agreed it was one of our best ever experiences. We came for British Mothers Day and my 50th birthday from England! Hands down the best restaurant I’ve hand in awhile. I went on a Sunday afternoon and the vibes were very welcoming. I felt like I was dining with family for Easter Sunday. Everything was the best version of all African American cuisine. Everything I ate was amazing. I’m planning to come back just to try the yard bird dinner.

The food and drinks were excellent! Can we talk about the cornbread... ordered an extra one to go that's how good it was!! From our server Viola who was amazing to the hosts who were awesome, the service is definitely what other restaurants lack!! The show of the chicken even though not planned by the restaurant was good entertainment. Will definitely return!
Be the first to ReplyWahoo !!! Best Sunday brunch but come 1 hour before the gospel show
We arrived at the time of the gospel show and had to wait a little for a spot at the bar . Once you are inside the magic is there : very professional staff . Good confort southern food . Amazing decoration and of course awesome gospel show that take you back to church . A place you must visit if going to NYC ( Harlem )

A highlight of our whirlwind theater weekend. Every dish and drink exceeded our expectations. The Yes, Chef and Harlem Mule were both delicious and made with housemade ginger beer. Started with the “Yep! Chicken & Waffle” appetizer served with hot sauce and maple syrup. Chicken was light, crispy and not at all greasy. Entrees of Bucatini Piccadilly and Shrimp & Grits were some of the best entrees we ate during our trip. Caution - the portions are very large. Our server was delightful and attentive as were all others we encountered. Red Rooster will definitely be on the list for a return trip to NYC.

Had to dine at the Red Rooster during our NYC trip. Admirers of THE Marcus Samuelsson! Short subway trip to 125th Street from Times Square area. Excellent customer service from the minute we walked in without a reservation. The place was popping with good vibes and DJ at 2pm on Dr. King’s Day. We waited about 15 minutes and were seated. Friendly and efficient team served people with amazing flow. I had the Bucatini Piccadilly! Ohhhh my🎯full of shrimp, lobster, crab meat and total goodness. The Flavor in every bite. I loved the flavors. My Love had fried chicken. Deliciousness abounded. Oh..cannot forget the Sweet Potato Coconut Soup..with roasted mushrooms. 10/10 for the Red Rooster. Must do/dine list! Bravo.

Deserves all its fame. Brilliant good, sharp service, great music. What’s not to like? We had a wonderful dinner and enjoyed every minute.
Be the first to ReplyGreat experience.
What a place. My son booked a table for us all on the Sunday of our visit to New York. What an enjoyable lunch. Our bloody Mary's were great. We had to eat the garden in the glass before we got to the drink. Celery, cucumber, carrots then the drink.😄. We ordered chicken with mash and greens. My Daughter in law had a prawn dish with grits. As we are, we were serenaded by the Harlem Gospel Choir. This was a fantastic experience snd well worth the visit. The staff were efficient and friendly.

OMG!!! My 87 yo Mother and I took a chance by visiting the restaurant without a reservation. This poplar spot was FULL. However, Shanice kindly and swiftly found a table for two, outside. Dixie (so kind & sweet) took our drink orders. THEN… The sky opened up and it started to rain. Low and behold, Mr. Dapper CHARLES, whisked us away inside. He graciously grabbed my shopping bag, so that I could better able assist mom with her walker. Neil was a very attentive waiter. The food was hot and delicious. Dapper GERMAN was kind to us as well. The icing on the cake was the pure BLESSING of a talented and energized gospel choir!!!!!!! What more could we have asked for. We departed with full tummies and a ❤️ of GRATITUDE 💯
Be the first to ReplyRestaurant Week (Fixed Menu)
I was looking forward to sampling the kitchen fixin's at Red Rooster. I stopped for lunch during the weekday and was pleasantly surprised to find the fixed menu for restaurant week ($30). I ordered a first course (sweet potato coconut soup) and second course (fried catfish with black-eyed peas). Both dishes looked appetizing and smelled great. While tasting the soup, the saltiness rang aloud but I finished it. The portion was generous and I was already a bit full before the second course arrived. The catfish was had a nice texture and I enjoyed the black-eye peas. I would love to return again and try some of the other dishes. The food is soulful with a bit of a gourmet twist.
Be the first to ReplyBest chicken, vibe, service, music, ambience and overall experience!
We cannot say enough great things about red rooster Harlem. Our party of 6 included 3 young children. The staff were incredibly attentive and kind throughout our visit. The food was PHENOMENAL: the best chicken my husband has ever had, which is saying sooooo much. All the sides were delicious. The music was on point. We will always return to red rooster when visiting NYC and encourage all others to do the same!! THANK YOU Red rooster staff for a night we will not soon forget. ❤️

I took my sister to Red Rooster on Sunday, a first for both of us. We had reservations so there was no wait. The crab cake and soup were delicious. Shrimp and grits, cornbread another hit. The service was excellent. Even on a crowded Sunday, there was no wait. The kids that sang was an added pleasure, since I didn't expect it. The audience was included in the last number (myself and my sister included.) We both loved it. I will be back again

Be the first to ReplyMajor Disappointment
When I was told we were going to NYC for my birthday and asked where I wanted to eat, without hesitation I said "Red Rooster". When we arrived, we were promptly and plesantly greated. Service staff were friendly, informative, and prompt. However, the food was underseasoned and overcooked. Parts of the chicken could not be cut with a knife. The shrimp were so overcooked, they were like leather. Such a major disappointment. Sadly, I cannot recommend this restaurant.

Having been to the London Red Rooster we decided to give the Harlem venue a try. We were looked after by Misha and I must add that she certainly added to our very wonderful experience. We had the cord bread, crispy bird sandwich and the catfish as I hadn't tried this before. All were wonderful. This was followed by a Rooster Sundae. While we dined we were entertained by Vy Higginsons Sing Harlem choir, what a marvelous group of singers. Everything about Red Rooster is classy and if I return I will certainly visit again.
Be the first to ReplyEnjoyable Lunch
We had a ver enjoyable lunch after cancelling a scheduled dinner reservation the previous night due to travel issues. The restaurant was very accommodating in cancelling reservations. We really enjoyed the deviled egg appetizer with a very tasty hummus. The seafood pasta was great as was the shrimp and grits. Also enjoyed the Mac and cheese with greens. Chicken thighs were good but not overwhelming. Really enjoyed the strawberry shortcake dessert.

My friends and I stopped in the bar of the Red Rooster taking a break from a long morning of sight seeing. They had a couple specialty drinks that were delicious. And the deviled eggs, cornbread, and fried chicken were outstanding. But best of all was our bartender, Ibrahim, who spent time chatting and laughing with us. We will never forget how he made our experience unforgettable!!

Fine place but didn't meet up with all the hype. They made a big deal of telling the four of us we could only have the table for two hours and then 43 minutes later we were finished with cocktails and our entrees. In fact, if you want fast-food this may be a good place to come because our four entrees arrived within minutes of sitting down. The chicken was fine, but not as good as what we had the day before at Amy Ruth's, the ceasar salad was unremarkable (and I had to make two requests before I could get some additional dressing to complement what had been drizzled originally). The ceviche was interesting and hardy and the portions of catfish and seafood bricatini generous and well-prepared. Our table was in the bar, which meant two people got to look at the wall, and the other two were often josseled about by servers and patrons entering and departing. The experience reminded me of the Texas saying "all hat and no cattle."
Be the first to ReplyGospel Brunch is a Highlight
I researched places to visit in Harlem and New York City that had a Sunday Gospel brunch. Red Rooster kept appearing. The food was delicious, the service was excellent and Sing Harlem was a perfect way to kick start a Sunday. I had the chicken and waffles. Chicken was fried perfectly with amazing flavors. Love the crisp waffle. My daughter had the spicy chicken sandwich and fries. Everyone enjoyed the music! Excellent Sunday brunch. Definitely one of the highlights of my trip.

Absolutely amazing ambiance from the flashback music to the decor! Cedric did a great job juggling our party’s needs & his recommendations were on point!
Be the first to ReplyI finally made it to Red Rooster!!!
When we lived in NYC, I wanted to go to Red Rooster. Somehow, I never made it there. But this visit, we left One Vanderbilt, hopped on a train and headed to Harlem. Red Rooster is such a vibrant place. Everyone in the restaurant seemed happy!! The servers were dancing and engaging the chefs, who joined in. The place is small, but oh so efficient. I watched the stacking of bowls and plates and the space is used well.
Now, the food. Ample portions, so be prepared. There were 4 of us, and we had apps and entrees. We maybe should have split and entree, but I wanted to taste more things!! The cornbread, sweet potato soup and deviled eggs were all delicious. My husband got the jerk salmon bowl and it was so tasty. 2 of us had the shrimp and grits with okra stew. I absolutely loved it. Our 4th person had the pan fried catfish and got collards too! Everything on the table was fabulous.
I enjoyed my visit to Red Rooster so much! It was a perfect meal to share with friends on our last night in NYC!
The DJ kept the vibe lively!!!
Love it!
Fabulous atmosphere and great decor. Very tasty food. Had not been in several years. Complied with COVID protocols requiring checking of vaccination status. Had outside dining with heat lamps.

A very unimpressive visit. Nothing bad. Nice hostess. Seated quickly. A little delay getting a waitress to take order, but not a big deal. Waitress was nice but wanted orders for drinks, appetizers, and entrees immediately. Very fast service. Had drinks and appetizers within 3-5 min. Nice sweet potato coconut soup, good (but not especially memorable corn bread), and two glasses of ok, $15/glass Cabernet. Pan fried catfish with black eyed peas was ok, but a little bland. Skipped desert and were presented the check less than 30 min from arrival. Just felt like a non-event and nothing worth going out of your way for.
The DJ didn't add anything to the night. If I was looking to just get a meal, I guess it would be ok, but it was not worth the trip.
