😍 5/5 - Chicken Wing Execution on Another Level

We came upon Phnom Penh quite by chance. My partner was attending a hair appointment and, while there, her stylist mentioned that Phnom Penh was home to the “best” wings in Vancouver. I’m not sure how that came up in conversation but, being something of a chicken wing aficionado, I made it a point that we should check them out. Given that the restaurant was only a 15-minute walk from our hotel, we decided to make the trek into Chinatown for some delightful snack treats.
The fact that I only learned of Phnom Penh’s existence a few weeks ago is kind of surprising. I say that for a couple of reasons: 1) The restaurant has been in operation since 1985, which is practically a lifetime by today’s standards; and, 2) They’ve been covered extensively in print and digital media for the better part of two decades, if not longer. From positive critical reviews to prestigious “top 10” lists, Phnom Penh has clearly earned the massive number of accolades highlighted on their walls. Heck, you know an establishment is noteworthy if Anthony Bourdain leaves you a hand-written note of thanks!
But then when you’re walking through Chinatown – a rather sketchy area at that – none of the accolades and praise really crosses your mind. I remember saying to my partner, as we continued our trek, “These chicken wings had better be good!” Seriously, parts of this area were very reminiscent of Hastings and Main. When we finally reached Phnom Penh, we learned it was “take-out only.” While kind of irritating, this inconvenience was all on us for not checking earlier. As such, we placed an order for their famous chicken wings “to go.” Since we had about 15 minutes to kill, we decided to explore more of Chinatown’s seedy underbelly.
We returned in time to collect our bounty and made off to a quiet corner (outside) to enjoy. Indeed, expectations were high. When you have notable sites like Lonely Planet refer to Phnom Penh as a “local-legend” and FollowMeFoodie declare that the wings are “not just chicken wings,” one cannot help but think they’re about to bite into the wings of God. Once we were settled and opened our takeout container, we both agreed that the wings didn’t look all that exciting; however, it soon became clear that Phnom Penh focuses much more on flavour and taste than they do hoity-toity presentation.
The chicken wings at Phnom Penh are lightly battered, crispy on the outside but very juicy on the inside. They’re seasoned with simple yet effective ingredients (rock salt, white pepper, sugar, and what is likely a bit of MSG), and are accompanied by a nice lemon sauce, which adds another layer of flavour but in all honesty isn’t really needed. The wings essentially speak for themselves. After just one bite, we understood why these wings have been declared some of the best – if not THE best – in the city. They have an undeniably delicious flavour and represent chicken wing execution on another level.
FOOD: 5/5
SERVICE: 5/5
VALUE: 5/5
RECOMMENDATION: Once Phnom Penh reopens for dine-in service, we’d love to return and try their “Holy Trinity” signature items: The wings (already confirmed as phenomenal!), butter beef and beef lucluc. All three look most enticing and undoubtedly highlight why this establishment has become a noted “Vancouver classic.” If you haven’t tried their wings, you don’t know what you’re missing out on! Highly recommended!
