Great experience, high quality food, attention to the details. We were lucky to have Santy as our host/waiter, great person, very knowledgable and definitely made a difference. The restaurant has a unique decor, great vibe.

i really wanted to like this place, but it definitely fell short of my expectations. we came on a wednesday night which was unexpectedly busy. we had an outdoor reservation at 8pm but also came at 7:15pm just cause. we were quoted a 20-30 minute wait which was completely fine. around 7:45 we came inside to check in and see how the wait was going. THE WAITLIST: now, this particular interaction really rubbed me the wrong way. they had about 3 or 4 hostesses at the stand, the one that we checked in with around 7:45pm talked to my friends and i awfully. she at first i'm guessing, didn't hear us correctly when we checked in for an already existing name on the waitlist and basically barked at us that they are seating reservations and not even concerned about putting names on the waitlist. when we specified we were asking about our existing check in, she basically gave us an i don't know and said they're prioritizing reservations. the way she talked down to us was quite frankly unacceptable and made us uncomfortable, and at that point we should've left. we were questioning amongst ourselves what we did to deserve that, because from our recollection, we were quite polite when asking. if she said they had difficulty with their seating arrangements and did not have an accurate prediction at that time, that answer would've been more than sufficient to us, especially because all us has had past experiences in food service, but decided to treat us rudely instead. THE RESERVATION: later on, we decided to check in for our reservation. i specifically went to a different hostess (who was way nicer btw) to check in with our outdoor reservation. they said they didn't have a specification that it was outdoors, (which was odd) but i told her my party and i would be happy to have the first thing that opened up. about 30 minutes passed our reservation we had seen about 5-6 parties get seated, probably two of them check in after us. when i checked in again with another hostess, she said that she is just waiting for one of the outdoor tables to check out, which was odd bc i thought our reservation did specify that it was outdoors? i specified again that we were okay with literally anything that opened up, and we finally got seated indoors at 8:30, waiting about 75 minutes. just seemed a bit disorganized. DINING : we got 6 plates: the ceviche verde (sea bass), tuna ceviche, salmon tostada, camarones de mojo, the beef brisket, and the octopus. we also ended up with margaritas, dessert, and free consolation guacamole which was good, but after trying it, i would not pay for it personally. the shrimp was good and sea bass ceviche was good, no complaints on taste for those. the octopus and tostadas were one dimensional and both were missing some colorful acidity and the tortillas we got with the brisket was extremely dry. the server was good, quick and efficient and bussed our table quickly. i wished he coursed our meal out a bit better because we ran out of space at our table, but i didn't really mind much. POSITIVES: the dessert was great. we had the ice cream with the coffee chocolate and the margaritas were awesome. and the salsa, on point! i ended with three stars because my experience was so flip floppy. when one thing redeemed the experience a bit, another knocked things down a peg. i still debate whether or not enjoyed it, but the one thing i know for sure is that i won't be back. love jose andres though so i will probably still support him, just not here. ultimately, not worth the 250 dollar meal we spent.

I came here because the reviews were absolutely insanely amazing reviews. I can honestly say my experience did not disappoint. I sat at the bar with Trenton and what a gem he is?! Perfectly honest food recommendations...but his drinks Lord Jesus. I may die at this bar! His drinks are pure perfection! Do yourself a favor and sit at the bar.
Be the first to ReplyI'm not from Washington but I think I would travel back
I'm not from Washington but I think I would travel back just for this restaurant. The menu has the coolest tequila and mezcal flights. You order the flight and you can follow the menu to explain where each spirit came from and a history review. I loved it. The ceviches, the homemade guacamole, and the exquisite margaritas were lovely. I will definitely be back. The staff were amazing, the waitress was very knowledgeable and able to recommend drinks, flights, and plates.
Be the first to ReplyThe guac is so so good and the quesadilla was to die for.
Very small plates and chips are special with fun treats. Def worth the price!!

What a great place for a quick happy hour! We were headed to the national portrait gallery, and stopped here for some snacks and a drink. One Mojito and one margarita later, we were ready to go. We enjoyed the quesadillas, and the ceviche. The chips and salsa was delightful!

Worst Mexican place I've ever eaten at and I've tried them all in DC. The food is super overpriced!!! And definitely not with it. The food made me sick. It tasted horrible and was uncooked. Please do not go here unless you want to pay $9 for tacos that aren't edible. Taco Bell is way better than here.

I normally don't have complaints regarding a way that a restaurant seats their customers because I work in food service and understand the challenges that come along with a busy establishment. However, I really found the way that Oyamel Cocina Mexicana treated my friends and I to be highly unusual last night. While we had an outdoors reservation at 8pm, we decided to pop in a bit earlier around 7:15, since we were already in the area, and see if they had capacity to seat us. The hostess was very accommodating and told us it would be a 30 min wait, which was fine with us since we were supposed to dine at a later time anyways. However, when we came to check back in at 7:45, the other hostess was extremely rude and told us curtly that there would be no tables opening up for the foreseeable future and provided no estimated wait. Even when we checked in for our 8pm reservation, we were continuously told that there were no tables yet while numerous parties went ahead of us. We ended up finally being seated around 8:30, which brought our total wait time to 75 min and 30 min after our reservation. We appreciated the complimentary guacamole that was provided for our troubles, but it wasn't impressive enough to make up for the poor customer experience from the one hostess. I wish I could say that this long ordeal was worth the food we were highly anticipating, yet our expectations fell flat once again. We ordered 6 plates to share: the ceviche verde, atun pacifico, camarones al mojo de ajo negro, tostada de salmon, plato de suedero, and pulpo negro. I was blown away by how fresh and clean the sea bass tasted in the ceviche verde, and the dish was flavorful and bright as a whole. In comparison, the tuna ceviche did not taste as fresh and I wasn't really a big fan. I was excited for the salmon tostada, but it was so bland that we had to use the ceviche verde sauce to go with it. The octopus' sweet potato puree and hoja santa salsa just tasted sweet and needed more acidity to deepen its flavor profile. The brisket was okay, but definitely nothing to write home about. The shrimp was delicious and benefitted greatly from the black garlic, but it wasn't worth $17 for 7 pieces. In general, the small portions' exorbitant prices were not thoroughly justified and the free salsa outshined most of the entrees. From the items we tried, ceviche verde and the black garlic shrimp are the only two I would order again. Fortunately enough, I do have positive views on the drinks and desserts that Oyamel Cocina Mexicana has to offer. We got the oyamel and pomegranate margaritas and both were amazing, especially with the unique 'salt air' added on top. I thought that they were also very well-priced for being one of the better margaritas in the city. We also ordered the cafe de olla, and while there could've been more of the coffee ice cream, the chocolate-coffee custard was rich and were complimented well with the lime and pecan shortbread. At the end of the day, I could see myself coming back for happy hour perhaps or for drinks and dessert after a meal. I wouldn't be opposed to trying their other menu items like the steak and trout. When comparing Oyamel Cocina Mexicana with other DC restaurants though, you could definitely get more bang for your buck elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, mediocre service.
I was there around 3 pm with my elementary school aged child. Restaurant was not busy. We were hungry after a day of visiting museums. It took our waitress about 15 minutes to even come to us, then another 15 to bring sodas (no water was offered). She didn't ask us if we had questions about the menu, didn't tell us about any specials etc. Our guacamole appetizer was delicious, but it was a very long wait to get it, even though it was made at a guac station right next to us and sat there ready for about 15 minutes after it was made before waitress brought it over. All dishes that we orderded came at the same time (about 45 minutes into our visit), which was tricky to place on a small table. The waitress did not check on us until the very end. We ordered a few different tacos, a few quesadillas, and an amazing chocolate/passion fruit dessert. No complaints about the food, but the service needs to be better.

This is a fun, energetic, pretty restaurant with really tasty and very affordable dining choices - and a great selection, including of vegetarian and meat-oriented options.
Be the first to ReplyPretty mid food not gonna lie.
Definitely won't be the best Mexican food you'll ever eat but it's a great casual restaurant. Service is great and for $6 per taco it's okay. You definitely won't be unhappy with the food and for a quick bite it's great. The pork could be more tender for sure but the watercress salad and tuna ceviche were a fantastic combo. Overall 8/10. Check it out!
Be the first to ReplyOyamel makes for an elevated experience.
The flavor and texture offered in the menu items are unlike any ordinary Mexican cuisine in the area. It is perfect for a light meal and/or sharing with friends. I visited during happy hour and wasn't disappointed by the items pricing. The mezcal margaritas don't taste too boozy but will definitely get you there. The atmosphere complements the experience with its chic decor and attentive service adding to the charm.
Be the first to ReplyThis is one of my favorite restaurants in DC by far.
The staff is super nice and patient with any questions you ask them. It is a little loud in the restaurant because it's usually packed. Every time I come back here, I always order the atun pacifico ceviche. It's made with a maggi-lime marinade and is super addicting (I would drink the sauce if I could). Highly recommend coming here and trying it. I also highly recommend getting a reservation if you're thinking about coming here. You can do it online through OpenTable!
Be the first to ReplyNice ambiance, cute outdoor eating area on the sidewalk.
Convenient location by the metro and quick service. Inside was a bit loud. Food was just okay though, not very flavorful. There were a variety of vegetarian options, but I thought the sweet potato black bean tamales was texturally boring and nothing exciting. The tortillas are a bit bland. Also it's tapas style so found it expensive for an underwhelming meal. Honestly would not go again.
Be the first to ReplyOyamel is hands down one of the best Mexican food
Oyamel is hands down one of the best Mexican food restaurants in DC. The guacamole is perfection, the drinks are amazing, and every dish hits the mark. It's no wonder the place is always packed - the vibrant atmosphere adds to the overall experience. Plus, being Bib Gourmand ranked speaks volumes about the quality you can expect. Whether you're a local or just passing through, Oyamel is a must-visit destination for a truly unforgettable dining experience.

My bf used to live in DC and frequent Oyamel, so when the Red line of the metro was experiencing major construction and the last stop from Union Station was Gallery Place/Chinatown, it was the perfect opportunity to walk the block down to Oyamel. We arrived around 1:30pm on the Friday before NYE and it was packed. Lots of little kids running around for some reason. The inside is very casual and decorated whimsically. We grabbed the last 2 seats at the bar. The bartender was very friendly, but you could tell he was very busy, so we didn't get that many check ins or water refills. The poor servers at this restaurant! They have to carry the food up stairs from the lower level (where the restrooms are located)! I'm not sure where the confusion came from, but on the day I was there, there were quite a few dishes that were almost given to the wrong people. We shared a couple plates and had a couple cocktails. Everything was very good. José Andrés often has that salt foam margarita (called the Oyamel here) on the menu at his restaurants, and it's so good. The ceviche con citricos was amazing, and the pulpo negro was a close 2nd. I just wish the octopus was more tender.

We came for a work lunch on a weekday and overall had a great time. The food was delicious and solid portion sizes. Highly recommend trying a ceviche - we had the coctel costeno which was fantastic, we loved the peanut chile topping. Also, we had a delicious tamal rojo which had an amazing tender and moist texture. Agua Frescas were watered down and sugary - not a fan. A big fault of Oyamel is a trademark of a Jose Andres restaurant: mediocre service. Our server never asked how everything was, and I had to flag them down to get them to take our order after they passed us 3 or 4 times after taking our drink orders. I also got a little bit of attitude from the hostess when I asked "can i have a reservation for 2" instead of asking for "a table for 2." Overall a 4, leaning 3.5. Ambiance was casual colorful, not super high end. The food was yummy and appropriate pricing for portion and preparation, but the pricing doesn't fit the quality of service.
Be the first to ReplyWe returned to Oyamel yesterday after 5 years.
I don't have strong memories of my meal five years ago, but the meal we had yesterday was extraordinary! I was really impressed by the number of plant-based and plant-forward options (vegetarian and vegan). We tried five small plates and tacos - each one was a modern Mexican take on traditional ingredients and full of unique flavor. We tried the nopales salad, the "gazpacho," brussels sprouts, beans with cabbage, and mushroom tacos. They were all excellent. If you're looking for the standard (Tex-)Mex restaurant, this place isn't for you. But if you're looking for elevated Mexican cuisine that takes beautiful, local ingredients to a new level, Oyamel can deliver.
Be the first to ReplyService was good, but the fun colorful vibe and yummy food
Service was good, but the fun colorful vibe and yummy food really keeps Oyamel another JA specialty. A flavorful menu with varied options, we enjoyed the ceviche and roasted cauliflower as appetizers. I debated between tacos and something for filling but settled on a delicious grilled mole steak. Great flavor and texture without being too "chocolate-y". The dessert Cafe de Olla was a deconstructed dessert. Interesting flavors but I'd like to try something different next time. Worth a trek, and if you call, you might be able to get a last minute reservation with a short wait like we did.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was amazing.
The staff was very kind and helpful. They have a super extensive tequila and mezcal menu with lots of info on all the choices. I really enjoyed the tequila flights. I have several dietary restrictions and was able to find lots of items that I could eat. My server was able to direct me toward everything that was safe for me to eat.

Be the first to ReplyMy wife and I have patronized Oyamel almost since its
My wife and I have patronized Oyamel almost since its beginning. We are also big fans of the work the owner José Andrés does with World Central Kitchen, and have contributed donations to it. So what we experienced last night was quite disappointing. Service - Our server was slow, and did not check back on us. Wait staff repeatedly tried to remove items from our table without asking if we were finished. We came down because of the promotion for a mezcal/drinks and special menu I received in the emails I subscribe to from Oyamel. Yet our waiter knew nothing about it, did not provide us with said promotional menus, and we had to ask for a manager to find out what was being offered (if at all). Note that this was the next to the last day of said "special" menu -my point being that you would think the staff knew about it from the past week and a half that it had been running. And FWIW, said "specials" weren't anything special. Food - This was by far the biggest disappointment. We have wondered the last few times if we were imagining a decline in Oyamel's food standards the last year or two. Last night confirmed that beyond doubt. Nothing was 'bad,' per se. But for what we paid, we would much rather patronize one of the many alternatives in DC (e.g., Espita). The cocktails were unbalanced and I would swear they're using a sour mix instead of fresh lime juice. Also too much ice -the drinks provided about three sips before being gone. Guac was not at all spicy as we requested, and when you walk in you see a bunch of it already prepared and sitting in a row on a cart - IOW, it's not prepared just before we order it. Chips and salsa were still very good, though it was hard to get a refill on the salsa. The shrimp special I ordered was alright, but nothing noteworthy or particularly flavorful. The same for my wife's chicken enchiladas and the tacos we shared. The chicken taco I ordered had a lot of refried beans at the bottom of the tortilla, which was not at all the right flavor. The tortillas had almost no corn flavor and were very 'cardboard-like.' The special lime/mezcal-sorbet dessert was covered in some gelatinous stuff that was supposed to be mango-something, but mainly served to hide the small amount of sorbet underneath (which was very good, what there was of it) and was on top of weird chunks of jicama and cucumber, which wasn't complementary of the rest of the dessert. Lastly, many of our former favorite menu items (that still appear on their website) are apparently no longer offered. We know Oyamel gets a ton of tourist walk-ins, so no matter how much they slip they'll probably be fine. But we're locals, and know better. I doubt we'll be back - there are simply too many other places to go for a better experience. We'll continue to support the fine work Andrés does, just through donations rather than by dining at Oyamel.
Be the first to ReplyWe just happened to stop by it and stopped to eat.
Service was very quick, server was very helpful, even accommodating plates for our kids. I had the Caldo Tlalpeno and husband had the chilaquiles. Kids had quesadillas. All of them were delicious!!! Chips had delicious seasoning. Ambience was beautiful and very lively. Highly recommend to give this place a try!

Words cannot even describe how amazing the food, ambiance and service was! Our server Daniel was just absolutely amazing. I say this because I have allergies to nuts and of course I clearly did not properly read the menu but Daniel paid close attention to my tables need. Any item that included nuts, he clarified and made sure to not put the dishes in front of me. I must say I was extremely impressed because it shows that he paid attention to allergies! The manager Fernando had stop by the table and was just as amazing. He asked us how our meal was and we had to compliment Daniel on his amazing service. Without any hesitation, I would for sure recommend this restaurant and ask for Daniel, I promise you will not be disappointed!
