Good omakase experience
Call to make a reservation! $108/person 16-course omakase. Overall good experience. The two appetizers were quite salty. Charred red snapper, squid with uni, and yellow tail with banana peppers were the favorites.

By far the best sushi available in the New Haven area, probably in all of Connecticut, maybe in all of New England. The head chef goes to auctions in New York early in the morning to get the best fish (which is partially why it's so expensive). It's not just the best fish though; the chef's are not afraid to dip into fusion cuisine with the preparation of the sushi. I remember one dish with an amazing, light, salsa on the sushi that complimented it perfectly. I highly recommend Otaru for a fancy dinner out. Zero complaints on food or service, however, atmosphere and music choice could use a lot of improvement.

Exceptional Quality Sushi. We have really enjoyed the quality of this restaurant. The door was closed when I arrived to pick my order. They are very strict on protecting customers. And the sushi was the best I tasted here in Nee Haven. Highly recommend this small and pricey place, still worth every penny.

If you are a sushi lover and find yourself in New Haven, CT you MUST treat yourself to the full Omakase at Otaru. Not only is the quality and flavor miles ahead of any other sushi restaurant in the state, but it is an experience. It's well worth going out of your way for a visit. The owners are extremely pleasant and their food is unlike anything you'll find in the area, short of taking a train into New York City. I definitely recommend you sit at the bar so you can watch the chef work his magic. And if they have the Maitake mushroom on the menu, do yourself a favor and order it.

This is an absolutely first class sushi bar (and you should sit at the bar). It is a better experience than any place I've been. The chef trained at Nobu and Morimoto, and it's immediately the only place in New Haven I want to eat sushi ever again.
Be the first to ReplyThe real deal sushi bar experience
Our amazing friend from Tavern on State pointed this place out as the best sushi in town and recommended to sit at the bar. We walked in to a very modest-looking place, and sat at the bar next to a gentleman that clearly is regular, who said if you really want the best experience you can't choose from the menu, you just got to let them do what they do best - if you enjoy sushi, variety, and unique pleasant surprises I highly recommend this approach. Not only was every piece delicious, but they all had their own flavor profile. By far, the tempura mushroom sushi was my favorite, it was extremely tasty and I usually prefer Toro or a buttery sashimi. The sushi chefs here are the real deal.

As a 3rd gen Japanese American who visits Japan regularly, I am a bit of a snob when it comes to sushi. I was blown away by Chef Sunny and his creations. Not only was the fish incredibly fresh and the sushi rice perfectly seasoned, each piece was crafted with care and expertise. My husband and I sat at the sushi bar and ordered the omakase (chef's choice) meal where Chef Sunny served us personally. By the second nigiri, the chef realized I am left handed and placed the rest of the pieces in the opposite direction to make it easier for me to pick up the pieces. He is only the second chef out of many who noticed this about me (and cared) and changed how he placed the sushi to make it easier for me to pick up the pieces. There was no soy sauce or wasabi and there was no need because each piece burst with flavor. Chef Sunny puts his own spin on the nigiri with a sprinkle of sea salt here or a dot of sauce there. My favorites were the salmon, the mackerel, and amazingly, the tempura maitake mushroom. I appreciated the tiny touches like the homemade pickled ginger cubes and the cube of homemade castella cake at the end. Delicious! A perfect ending to a perfect meal! We will be back!
Be the first to ReplyBetter sushi than Japan
This place is better than sushi in Japan. Trust me when I say this! Best authentic sushi hands!down! The best way to get the full experience at Otaru is sitting at the bar and having Omakase. Each piece melted in my mouth like butter.

This sushi and sashimi is the very best I have ever had, and I am a huge sushi/sashimi fan. My only complaint is that it makes most of the area sushi look worse by comparison. Sonny, the chef/owner, clearly loves what he is doing -- serving the freshest fish for miles around. He and his wife, Kathy, have an apartment in New Haven and a home in New York City, where they go on weekend and return with fresh ingredients. The touches are subtle in order to bring out the best flavor in each morsel. I have had the pleasure of ordering omakase with my brother and niece but I mostly go there once a month for lunch. It's not cheap! Many thanks to Sonny and Kathy for bringing Otaru to us!
