We heard great things about this place so we decided to try
We heard great things about this place so we decided to try it out for lunch. The place opens at 11:30am and we got there around 11:15am and there was already a long line of people waiting. They do not take reservations for lunch during the week so we put our name on the waiting list. We were about 10th on the waiting list and was told it would take anywhere from 30-60mins before a table would be available. However, you can sit at the bar. We decided to sit at the bar but was told we could not order any combos, lunch specials, hot food. Those things are only available if you sit at a table which sucked. We didn't want to wait so we sat at the bar. The sushi was pretty good, not the best I've had but better than most places. I noticed our chef was pretty quiet and didn't engage in too much conversation while the other chefs were yapping in up with the customers they were helping. The pricing is expensive but that's sushi for you. I always spend about $50-$60 on myself and want to go and get a burger afterwards cause I'm still hungry. Service was good and food decent. I didn't care for the pricing/food quantity ratio, lack of seating and most importantly, no reservations during the week for lunch. I'll stick to AYCE sushi places. The quality might not be as good but at least I'm full for less than $40.

This is my go to Japanese restaurant because of the great lunch specials. I almost always order the lunch combo with Toro Don and Miso Cod. It also comes with hot green tea and miso soup. When I come with friends we order our own meals but when I come with family, we will order a bunch of different dishes to share. Some of our favorites also include salmon kama, grilled chicken, fish head soup, and seared toro salad.

My family has been coming to Ootoro for years and through C$&@#, they've main trained their level of service and quality of food. Having just returned, again, from two weeks in Japan, we can honestly say Ootoro is by far the most authentic and comparable sushi restaurant compared to those in Tokyo and Osaka. It wasn't until we tried two other locations and were severely disappointed, did we vow to return to Ootoro as soon as we are able. The cut is generous, the quality is extremely fresh, all sashimi is tender, cohesive, and that feeling when buying into it screams freshness. The sushi chefs are actual sushi chefs that caters to your needs when you order omakase...unlike the recent places we've been to where the chefs are simply an assembly line. Prices are still extremely competitive after all this time and the sake menu is amazing. Level of service is top notch, albeit short staffed, good help is very hard to find these days. Still our go to sushi restaurant in n Orange County and it looks like that will not be changing for the near future.
Be the first to ReplyBest sushi in Irvine.
For an exceptional experience sit at the bar. It's a splurge but sometimes you need to splurge.
Be the first to ReplyWe love this place.
Sushi quality is probably #1 in Irvine area. We often come here for celebrations. Price will be $60-$100. So it's not casual lunch place. But it is worth to come and spend money. Their tempura is very close to Japanese one which you can taste in Tokyo. I would give 5 stars but one reason I couldn't give 5. Last time we went there, there was a family with infant and 2-3years old. Kids were screaming and crying. Many of customers were disturbed and some of them even left before they order anything. This place should be ban family with small children. To be honest we have to listen great screaming orchestra while we were celebrating our anniversary. Please ban families with poorly behaved children. If family can afford this type of expensive meal, they can for sure afford babysitter for few hours. Peace

Horrible waiting time, researve first otherwise don't go here . People are drinking and talking for extreme long time . The manager can not control the table flipping at all

I am a foodie and have been to many Japanese restaurants including omakase. Ootoro's quality is hard to beat-they offer $250 omakase but their lunch and dinner offerings area highest quality. GENEROUS slices of premium fish (try Sashimi Lunch, only dine in), great tempura and salads. Lunch combo is the best value-can be busy. It's hard for me to go to lesser Japanese restaurants.

I love love loveee Otoro! The servers are always super nice, and the restaurant is dimly lit with spotlights at night. I've only gone early dinner on weekdays so haven't experienced any wait time. My boyfriend and I have been here 3 times together for dinner and always get the premium chirashi don ($48.95), the sweet shrimp nigiri ($18.95), and a few more nigiris to try (salmon belly, toro, etc). The quality of the fish and shellfish are so fresh and melts in your mouth. The chirashi don has everything you'd want, and every bite is so tasty! The shrimp heads can either be fried or cooked in miso soup, so two dishes for one!! I haven't tried the other cooked items, but they also look very good. Overall, this is my go to sushi spot in Irvine. I always leave satisfied and happy. Definitely give this place a try!
Be the first to ReplyLove it.
Make sure to go early as lunch line up is the norm, or arrive a little later around the time when the first batch finishes.
Be the first to ReplyBest local sushi place.
They offer an amazing lunch menu, which is also a great value. It is an extremely busy shopping center with limited parking and a queue for lunch that starts before they open.
Be the first to ReplyOotoro has three locations and I have been to all three.
Of the three, this location is my least favorite. They get very busy for lunch just like the Walnut location and they give great service and attention to get everyone through the lunch hours. As the quality and taste of their food is just as good as the other two locations, the slices of their sashimi were a bit thinner compared to the other two. I'll continue to go to Ootoro for the best quality sushi, but most likely be continuing to go back to the Walnut location.

The food is one of the best I have ever tasted in my entire life. Just be patient with the bipolar service there. I have experienced both excellent and horrible. Go and try. Highly likely, You will be very happy.

Dude. The food here is SO amazing. You should come for the lunch special because it's a good deal. I'd highly recommend getting the sea bass and the karage chicken. I think my husband and I also got a sushi dish to share which was really good too. Very fresh. But I'd say anything you order will be delicious! Service was good. The host was very attentive and helpful. No major concerns besides that there is a long wait even on a week day for lunch. I think I waited 45 mins on a Friday afternoon at 1130 am or something like that. The restaurant itself is high end so the decor and environment is casual but classy too. I didn't pay much attention to that because I was too excited for food. Lol Highly recommend
Be the first to ReplySushi is wonderful here.
Lunch menu and price are worth it, and is a bargain compared to dinner prices.
Be the first to ReplyVery good sushi in Irvine with many selections available.
Best to call and reserve early
Be the first to ReplyAn excellent sushi restaurant.
I highly recommend it. I didn't do the omakase. $300-500 per person was a bit on the high side, but their sashimi dinner plate is already amazing! The fish was so fresh. You can order the sweet shrimp and the white fish sushi for a reasonable price and yet it's so delicious! You can have the sweet shrimp head deep fried or in a miso soup. Either is amazing good! For those who are doing Thinsulin, there's plenty of green light options. I would definitely come back. I recommend making reservations ahead of time to sit in the dining area.

The most delicate fish and simple flavors makes this place my go to spot when I want to really indulge. Great place for a GNO or date night. Staff are always kind and eager to help.

I frequent Ootoro a lot! Sushi is on of my favorite foods & this is definitely #1 on my lists for sushi locally. Some days are honestly better than others, and I would say today was one of the off days although I still always enjoy my food. Starting off with seating and rsvp, they don't take rsvp, only walk ins so if you want to go here for lunch or dinner make sure to line up when they first open for lunch (11:30am) & dinner (5:30pm) because they fill up very quickly. Even on weekdays; but definitely weekends is worst. For the food, I feel the sushi here is usually very fresh. Even their cooked foods is really good! I honestly don't like their omakase as much as other places, & prefer table seating and choosing what I want here. I've tried all of their omakase options to the most expensive one as well and am just not a fan. Here are my usual orders:Sushi:Tuna - their tuna here is sooo good to me I always make sure to get this here.Toro - this is also on top of my list - if you like fatty fish, you need to order this.Ootoro - this is much fattier version of toro and I would say it's too fatty for my liking. Uni - hit or miss here, some days it's AMAZING & some days it's just ok. Like today.Ankimo spoon - a MUST for me! If you like monkfish liver, get this. The Tsukemono (Japanese pickle) gives this sooo much texture and really elevates this dish for me. I often crave this :pCooked Foods:Grilled miso black cod - get this if your are a fish cooked fish fan. It's sooo tender and the miso glaze over the fish is so tasty. It's a sweet/salty flavor and goes so well with the softness of the fish. Grilled chicken - on days I'm really hungry I order this. The flavor and sauce is spot on with the rice. Although this is also a hit or miss some days. I feel like they used to make it more crispy than they do now
Be the first to ReplyThís Restauran was delicious the best sushi in town .

Be the first to ReplyWorst customer services.
I tried to call to make a reservation, someone pick up my call, and then he placed on mute forever. Next, I called the restaurant once again, someone pickup then put a side, not event say hello, such an Impolite and worst customer services. Not recommended.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, very tasty.
A bit pricey but overall, it's a decent sushi spot. Service can be better. Ambiance is casual/loud. I would def recommend it for a good sushi.
Be the first to ReplyThis has become one of my favorite sushi spots.
The sushi is fresh and always so tasty & the service is top-notch! 10000/10.
Be the first to ReplyGood food I love their lunch combo.
Fresh ingredients and good portions. I will recommend this place
Be the first to ReplyI first at here around 3-4 years ago, and I never gave it
I first at here around 3-4 years ago, and I never gave it the justice it deserves. Up until I had eaten here, I rarely ate raw fish. I thought it was bland, texture less, absolute trash. But when my coworkers pushed me to try the chiraishi bowl here I fell for it! This place brought me to love sashimi. I realized all the sushi places I have been eating at were no bueno. This is still my favorite chiraishi to date. This place opened up doors for me to continue trying new sushi places
Be the first to ReplyAs of this review, it'll be my third time dining at Ootoro
As of this review, it'll be my third time dining at Ootoro Sushi, second time at the Irvine location, and first time doing omakase. My first time at the Irvine location, I had the lunch menu. Best bang for your buck with high quality fish! Second time was at the Rowland Heights location doing a la carte. Third time was back at the Irvine location but for the omakase. Each time I visit Ootoro, the experience and food is better than the previous. Huge, huge shout out to my sushi chef, Masa who did such an amazing job serving all eight people from my party. He was attentive, quick, and so friendly. The art and craft of his creation and presentation are flawless. Try the omakase here and make sure to ask for Masa! I'll definitely be back soon to see him for another omakase treat!
