Very nice pure Portuguese restaurant
What a wonderful restaurant this is. Pure Portuguese, no menu but a 7-course set menu. Products from the region (sea and inland) and of the season. We had a delicious meal, 'all inclusive' with wine and water.

After a great recommendation, we were disappointed: Small, comfortably furnished tasca with a wood-burning oven in the corner. Friendly, attentive service. The set menu of 5 starters + 2 main courses + wine + dessert + coffee for a total of €38 per person is OK. The food was supposed to be typically Algarvian, but it was very simple, down-to-earth, without much spice or flair, without vegetables, and quite oily. No lasting memories. Unfortunately, it was more of a flop for us.

We traveled from Vilamoura to Estombar to visit Charneco, after being highly recommended by friends. Our experience could not have gone better. We remain customers and will certainly return. The menu consists of 5 starters, all made with local products and according to the season. A fish dish and a meat dish follow, ending with a mix of desserts. It's difficult for this to happen with a group of 11 people at the table, but we were all delighted with absolutely everything we were served. We started with a board made up of various snacks (fig jam, fresh goat cheese, seasoned carrots and olives and tuna muxama), followed by a cuttlefish roe salad, sardines served with tomato, clams, and corn porridge with cockles and ray fritters (my favorite). The fish dish was delicious monkfish rice and the meat dish was oven-roasted ham with potatoes. For dessert we tried the flavors of the Algarve, with an orange tart, carob cake, a sweet with almonds and eggs and figs with almonds. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very pleasant, as is the service, very friendly and attentive.

What a great experience from start to finish. First visit for me but I went with friends who had been before, so I had some idea of what was to come. The food, service and ambience was a totally great experience. As I understand it the restaurant is a family business and on the night we visited father and son were working. Both spoke good english and the son explained all the dishes in great detail. The food was as good as the explanations. We had 7 courses, covers, a bean dish with sausage, octopus and Parsnip crisps, clams, rice and monkfish, pork shin and potatoes, finally a selection of deserts, followed by a medronho and coffee. A totally excellent rustic Portuguese dining experience, thoughout they served red and white wine all inclusive at €38 a head.

Excellent food, superbly cooked and varied selection of traditional Portuguese food. Great service too. Would highly recommend. Very good value for money. Can't fault it, the highlight of our annual trip to the area.
Be the first to ReplyWow, wow and wow. Lovely food in friendly family atmosphere
This was the second time this year for a meal at O'charneco. Both times were hugely successful and cosy evenings with friends. The food is excellent, although a couple of friends were a bit put off by the octopus, but even they began to get used to the somewhat unusual menu and enjoyed themselves. 7 small retter, plus 2 main courses plus couvert, wine and small cakes for dessert. Truly excellent in a lovely atmosphere in this family run restaurant. Highly recommended.

Charming restaurant, excellent food and very attentive staff - the young waiter who looked after us was very friendly. A very authentic Portuguese experience , will definitely visit again
Be the first to ReplyCharming family run, authentic Algarve restaurant
Authentic Algarve style restaurant run that has been run by a family for over 40 years. The family still cook and serve the food. You pay €35 pp for 4 starters, 2 mains, a dessert, and as much house red/white wine or water as you like. The food was delicious and the service was very good - almost a must visit if you are in the Algarve.
Note that it is in quite a residential area with no carpark, so you have to squeeze somewhere in the windy roads. Also, they only take Portuguese cards, so make sure you take cash.
Hidden gem
An hidden gem..!!! We are so grateful to Sergio to recommend O Charneco. More than a restaurant. João & his son Gonsalvo have welcomed us in their home. They offered us local dishes. We are truly happy we let them surprise us with many different courses. We will return..!!! Obrigado

This restaurant is a great find, the staff are very welcoming and the food is 7 courses based on traditional Algarve food. The food is seasonal, when we visited it was broad bean season and there was a great dish they made using the local produce.
It is more seafood based and out of the 7 courses (excluding desert) 4 had used seafood from clam soup to stingray.
There is no menu and you are given what they have produced for the day. As two adults and a child (6 year who eats everything) there was enough food and we where struggling by the end to eat the desert. I must say some of the best food around and with a charge of €35 per adult (effectively our daughter ate for free) including all drinks it is the best find in the area. I would highly recommend but you need to book
