We tried and tried knowing that we were only in Sydney for a total of seven nights over a thirty day period. We wanted to dine with Mr. Wong in the early evening (6:30/7:00 timeframe) and had to take what we could. About six weeks in advance of our arrival we started looking. There was only one available at 6:00PM and we grabbed it and it was on our next to last night in Australia. We arrived and got one of the best seats in this huge restaurant upstairs right next to the kitchen so we could watch some of the food being prepared. This was our fifth visit to Mr. Wong's over the past years so we knew we wanted the Peking Duck with Pancakes so then had to decide what to add. We both wanted everything but it came down to the Queensland King Prawns. The Peking Duck with Pancakes arrived and it was pure beauty. The duck skin was perfectly roasted with that crisp feel. And the duck meat was tender and succulent. The pancakes are always some of the best we ever have where ever we travel. The homemade hoisin sauce, along with the slices of cucumber and scallions were perfect making the little Peking Duck bundles of greatness. The Prawns arrived in their dish of beauty. They were huge, I would guess they were U-8/10 size. They were deep fried with spicy salt and 3 types of peppercorns. Haven't figured out what "spicy salt" is but the peppercorns could have made the salt spicy!!! The peppercorns made the dish. The prawns were peaking out of this massive bowl of them. I don't know the exact mixture of the three types but do know they had our favorite...the szechuan/sichuan reddish peppercorns...we search for them. You either love them or hate them. The Prawns were extremely fresh no shrimpy taste. Not too much batter, just enough. Can't wait to try this dish again. I might add that this Fried Prawn with Spicy Salt and Peppercorns it now at the top of our list of all-time favorite dishes. Service was great. Dishes were explained in detail. Prices are very reasonable considering the quality of ingredients. Atmosphere is some of the best in any restaurant we have visited. Wish Mr. Wong's would come to Atlanta. Highly recommend. And remember to book that reservation well in advance.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome Cantonese food, with very attentive service.
I had the Kung Pao chicken and steamed dim sum, both had very good flavor. They carefully accommodated my wife's shellfish allergy. This a not to be missed Sydney restaurant.

Fantastic, if you can get in, had to ignore ongoing booked-out notifications, & just roll-up stating "we are very confused"....we got a table finally !

The food was fabulous - deliciously prepared and arrived in a timely manner. Our server was attentive and very helpful. The restaurant was hopping! We ate lunch and all the tables were busy but it didn't detract from the charming atmosphere of this vintage location.

While the food was good, the poor service deeply overshadowed even the best of dishes. We made it clear that 1 of our party of 2 was not having seafood. Despite this, they brought out only one dish at a time so we were never eating at the same time. Additionally, we ordered the rock crab but made it clear again that only one of us was eating but they brought out two sets of utensils and bibs and a massive portion for two. That wouldn't necessarily be awful if it wasn't a $250 dish, meaning we threw over $100 down the drain due to the service. We had to remind the server twice about our drink orders as well. Just among the worst service I've experienced in some time. Also, don't go here if you have any desire to hear anyone else at your table talk. It's so loud, we were constantly leaning across the table to hear anything. You couldn't pay me to go back.

This restraint was absolutely spaghettitacular though it was quite odd to add cinnamon to my freshly squeezed lemon water, the combination made me gurgle all day long. My scrummy was repugnant (quick little disclaimer, my non enhanced linguals: its not an actual pug. Think fiercer, not smarter. i wish you a good night and a happy Hanukkah whenever that may be.

Nice. Good cocktails the drinks are awesome but expected at Merivale Group venue. The food is great, but it's not cheap and it was very dark room lit. I prefer more traditional place like Palace Chinese, but if going for a bit more of a high end Chinese affair this is a great place.

If you're looking for a fancy Chinese restaurant that serves Hong Kong style food in Sydney, look no further than Mr. Wong. Yes, it's a tad more expensive than your usual Cantonese style food BUT this place is worth the hype. Even on a regular weekday, the place is PACKED & POPPING. Mr. Wong has the feel of old school Chinese decor with modern day flair. I absolutely loved this place & would most definitely visit again if I ever get to go back to Sydney!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Cantonese cuisine with a five star experience.
You should book a reservation in advance, as this place is very popular.

We came back in 2022 and the duck is still dry but some of the other dishes, like the Lobster and scallop dumpling and Prawn toast, were good.
Be the first to ReplyThis may have been the best Asian restaurant I have been to.
It's hidden in a back ally, but boy is it popular and good. The place is massive, spanning over two stories, and contains an elegant bar. The food was out of this world. I had the dim sum, lemon chicken, pork fried rice, black pepper beef, a veggie plate, and the pork. For every dish, I found myself not wanting to stop.
Be the first to ReplyThe place is dimly lit, provides an intimate setting.
It is beautiful, although a little cramped. The food is good but too pricey for what it is. I order the prawn wontons in supreme broth, the Peking duck, and the crab fried rice. The prawn wontons were delicious with a tasty broth, but the portion size is small. The skin on the Peking duck wasn't crispy enough and the wraps easily ripped. The skin should be more crispy with an elastic wrap. The fried rice was overly seasoned. It is covered in fried garlic and seasoning that you have to mix into the rice yourself. The seasoning overpowered the delicate crab and you can barely taste any crab, which should be the highlight of the dish. I think there should be more crab for the price. Overall the food is good, and our waiter, James, provided us with phenomenal service, but I think you can find better authentic Chinese cooking elsewhere.

Definitely a good spot to hike to if you're staying anywhere in the "center" of Sydney. The ambiance and coziness were fantastic, as well as the over the top attentive & helpful servers!I was a bit torn on what to get, and my waitress was more than helpful - just speak up, and I believe they can help you with any choices. I opted to go with the:Wagyu & truffle puffs - not my favorite of the bunch but about 2 bites and the steak bits just wasn't up to par. Flaky coating and not overwhelming truffle taste.4 mixed steamed dumplings - this is where the server really helped me out and instead of saying 8 and charging for that, she said we can make it 4 since I was a solo lunch date to myself. King crab and prawn was tied with crystal king prawn & pork dumpling. The baby spinach was good, though I'm not a huge spinach fan. Pork xiao was pretty good too but the two first were the best.King crab fried rice - "typhoon shelter style" - I'm still not 100% sure what that means but it was delicious! The highlight of the meal. A few decent sized bites of king crab. Also, another time the waitress came through - she helped me a get a bit smaller portion (again, saving me a little extra money as well) so I could get a little sampling of the above plus this amazing dish. The flavor is just *chef's kiss* ... you can't go wrong. Also - mix some chili sauce with soy sauce for a little extra added flavor for dipping (as needed).

I was lucky to get a seat though I had no reservation and the place was absolutely jammed with people. I guess that's a benefit of dining alone the night before heading out of town. It would be better to have a group so that you can sample several dishes, but since I was solo, I had to choose. I went with the Singapore noodles with pork and prawns. Once I ordered, it was out in very short order. I was sitting by the kitchen and that team is cranking through all night! My noodles were flavorful and perfectly cooked: just the right amount of pork and prawns with sauce. The portion is generous for one, but I managed to finish it. The building is interesting and the restaurant is lively and loud. I'd make a reservation if I wanted to eat here again, which I would if I were in the area. I didn't need the full fried ice cream, but another Yelper said it was a must do. The waitress told me they did a small one, so I ordered that. It was quite tasty and well executed. The highlight for me was the sauce. It looks like their roasted and grilled meats are a feature as well, but there was no way I could do that without sharing. Next time, I guess!
