This was my first omakase experience and I had a great time
This was my first omakase experience and I had a great time at matsunori! They offer two different packages, a $58 package and an $88 package. We got the $88 package. The appetizers were alright but I really liked the fish and my favorite was the wagyu! They also gave us a glass of their yuzu sake for free and a refill for free too! The restaurant seats about 10 people and is quite small and intimate. The whole experience takes about an hour. I would come back if I want a no frills omakase experience.
Be the first to ReplyIt's really a 3.
5/5 if I could. For $58 you get 1 app, 9 nigiri, and 2 hand rolls. I would say that it's a good deal for what you get, but not as good as other "budget friendly" omakases. It's good to try once, but don't think I would go out of my way to return. Also you get 3.99% off if you pay cash! The service was pretty good, our chef explained each piece in details which I appreciated. The restaurant space itself is very small, with just the seating around the chefs table. As for the food, I found that the first half of the nigiri given were a little lackluster, with not much flavor. However, there were some really great standout pieces. -uni & scallop; soooo good. the scallop was sweet and the uni was perfectly buttery and creamy. -unagi (eel) & foie gras; I'm usually not a big eel fan, but the eel was so good, especially paired with the umami of the foie gras. It was a great way to end the meal -chutoro (medium fatty tuna); this piece always hits! love the fattiness and the way it just melts in your mouth.

My first time here, I stopped by this spot on a weekday and it was busy. My friend ordered the $58 (1 app, 9 piece nigiri and 2 handrolls), for me, I ordered the $88 (2 apps, 10 piece nigiri, 2 hand rolls). We were stunned by the quality and the freshness of the fish! The rice was perfect texture and didn't have too much vinegar like other omakases, rice is very important in nigiris. The hand-roll sizes are twice as big as other places. At the end of the courses, theres à la carte - where you can order any additional pieces and all of them are under $25. We gladly declined when offered, the course pieces were enough. Although you can double up your courses for the same price. If you're a big sushi fan! We also brought our own tequila (Clase Azul), as it's byob all day, no corkage fee! It was my friend's birthday so they gave us mochi and sang a song for her. The chefs were funny, friendly and interactive. The service was very professional. Frequently checking on us, pouring alcohol for us and chatting with us. A very friendly atmosphere. We're already planning to make this a weekly tradition, given the reasonable prices and superior quality compared to other nearby spots. I've experienced places where the chefs are silent and robotic, rushing through the meal without a hint of warmth or friendliness, but this place is a breath of fresh air.
Be the first to ReplyTLDR; Don't waste your time or money.
It used to be good a year ago, quality and service are awful now. Honestly, we used to be very loyal customers (we have been here over 12 times in the last year; when they were serving the old menu). Went to try their new menu of handrolls. Tried it and don't need to try it again. Loved this place when they did omakase nigiri, I feel like the handrolls cheapen the fish. And the quality has severely declined over the last few months. The fish used to be fresher, establishment used to be cleaner, and the service was a lot more attentive. I literally had to wipe the counter clean myself - prior to sitting down. The appetizers were my favorite part of this menu. I did not care for the "taco" handroll with guac, seems very amateur masking the fish because maybe it's not so fresh? The only handroll I did enjoy was the unagi, but ironically that's the one dish that used to be on their old menu. We only came last night because they offered a free meal after coming last weekend and having a awful meal with a new server named "Robin" who had coughed in our dishes and served "sushi" that was hacked and fat as a bar of soap.

Matsunoria was a great find! They had a buy one get 50% off deal when I went and I found the flavors so interesting. This omakase was definitely on the cheaper side so I didn't mind that the flavors weren't mindblowingly innovative. But if you're looking for an affordable omakase and maybe an introduction to omakase, this is a great spot for it!
Be the first to ReplyFirst omakase experience.
Was seated outside and the menu was cheaper with still the ambience and bar of the inside seating. Fish was pretty good, but the truffle is very overwhelming and due to the time limit, the service is fairly rushed. Not too expensive though for omakase but not sure if I'll return.

Everything was absolutely incredible and Chef Ryan was so fun! This omakase is such great value for the price. There is a difference in the menu between indoor and outdoor seating so just something to be aware of when reserving!

Matsunori, a cramped spot with limited seating for about 10 people. Despite its reasonable price of around $68, the food lacked innovation, featuring basic toppings and sauces. The omakase overall experience was disappointing, leading to the decision not to return. It's concerning that despite claims of accommodating allergies over the phone, the restaurant failed to do so in practice, as evidenced by their refusal to change gloves, potentially endangering customers with allergies like my boyfriend, who has a shellfish allergy. While Matsunori offers affordable omakase with generous portions and a tempting BOGO 50% deal for cash payments, the flavor fell short, with overly-sauced dishes muting the taste of the fish and some sauces being too sweet or heavy. Although service is friendly, the experience didn't meet expectations, particularly given recent openings of non-Japanese-owned omakase restaurants compromising quality for profit, which may have contributed to the disappointment.

Third time coming here and it is as good as ever! It has to be the best value in terms of quality/cost. Not sure which one is my favorite this time, so I included pics of two of them, otoro and uni/scallop. Service was prompt and precise, with their usual friendly, upbeat demeanor. They even included a free yuzu sake drink! Not sure how they can give 2 apps, 10 nigiri, 2 handrolls, 1 dessert, and a drink (16 items) for $88, especially when the ingredients include caviar, foie gras, uni, otoro, and other premium cuts of fish. Nice, cozy ambiance that seats about 10 people total. Love this place!

Matsunori is our go-to omakase spot, and we've been three times already. Their BOGO 1/5 deal, ending on 2/29, was a great incentive for us to revisit. But what's got us even more excited is their upcoming hand rolls omakase concept starting in March. Plus, hearing about their expansion to a bigger location just adds to the anticipation. We can't wait to see what's next for them! Very friendly staff. Their homemade yuzu sake was amazing! BYOB without fee is chefs kiss!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic time here the other night.
We made a reservation same day, on a whim. This place is amazing. Such a great experience, the price for the weekend menu is incredibly fair for the quality and freshness, as well as creativity. Impeccable knife skills, and such unique flavors to enhance the selections of fish. Looking forward to trying their weekday menu
Be the first to ReplyWe sat outside with Chef Yee.
He was great! Very conversational we were the only people eating outside in the heated dining. Everything was delicious and he was very knowledgeable on classic Omakase techniques. It was cheaper outside which was still fairly cute. $68 for 12 nigiri pieces and 1 handroll. Inside offers with dessert and app in $78 price. We ordered a wagyu and uni nigiri after and it was worth it. We would come back and sit outside! Tasty and fresh.
Be the first to Reply"I'll leave it up to you".
If you like sushi, omakase is a must try experience. Sushi chefs will serve individual pieces of nigiri based on what's freshest from their source market. There are a wide array of restaurants across New York that range from less than $60 to nearly $1000 per tasting (not sure I'll want to pay nor be able to afford this one...). There are various styles including more contemporary, flavorful style vs Edomae style that emulates a more traditional methodology and taste. Matsunori has top quality fish for an excellent price. We were actually the only guests that showed up on time and because of that the chef gave us a free extra appetizer. It's an unpretentious, fun environment and BYOB! If you need a nightcap, can always pop over to Copper & Oak where Tomo can guide you through top of the line liquors for a truly reasonable price!
Be the first to ReplyTrue Omakase? Probably not.
Better than your maki rolls with cream cheese? Probably. Confusion is the one word I'm looking for here. Some of the pieces does not make any sense. Shari tasted very mushy and bland.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome chefs, great service and price is right, would love
Awesome chefs, great service and price is right, would love to go back! They have sake and beer if you forget to byob :)
Be the first to ReplySuperb omakase set for ~$78 when we went.
The portions are awesome and the pieces have a lot of flavor especially the tuna ones. The appetizer is a legit appetizer compared to other places. The toro hand roll was especially awesome. Place is BYOB. Good service as well. Would recommend if looking for solid affordable omakase.
Be the first to ReplyThis was my first omakase experience and it was SO GOOD.
Especially loved the sushi topped with truffle oil. Every piece of sushi had a super thick and fresh piece of fish--will definitely come back!

The occasion:Early dinner Sunday night 5:00 PMThe place small as evident in the countless pictures.Atmosphere, typical sushi bar.Food:A fixed flight of sushi, hand roll, sashimi. (Omakase)Although none of the personell is Japanese the food was very good. If you are used to the places that you find outside of the big cities, or supermarket "sushi" you might not like this place because the don't overload with sauces, there is no soy sauce, but instead you get to taste the fish, delicately enhanced by subtle garnish. Do not expect to fill you stomach cheaply since the place has no cooking facility, therefore no soup or hot food except weekdays there is egg custard available. As far as price of good sushi in NYC goes this place is a gem.Price:237$ for two 1 beer 3 cheap sake (cans)
Be the first to ReplyIt's so hard to find reasonably priced omakase in NYC
It's so hard to find reasonably priced omakase in NYC anymore so I was excited to try Matsumnori with my friend's recommendation. They allow BYOB, which is great but they also have beer and sake now.The regular omakase was $78 and chef's special was $100. We opted for the chef's special. We usually prefer more simple omakase (so less about many protein and flavours combining), but they did it super well here. For example, the Waygu beef and toro starter - I could taste both flavours really well. As well as the eel and foie gras sushi was delightful. The chef was very excited to see that we enjoy each bite and so were we! Next time we'd try to the regular omakase as well. All in all, we are definitely adding Matsunori into our rotation. Really great good, value for money, and lovely experience. Also if you are visiting if it's cold outside - bundle up. Sometimes if the previous tables hog up the seating, we had to wait outside. Lucky for us it wasn't too cold that night and we were bundled up. The venue is very intimate also, it's just a long bar with about 12 seats at a time. Be punctual also.

One of our favorite omakase spots! My girlfriend and I have eaten a lot of omakase in NYC and this is at the top of our list, can't beat the value and the sushi is incredibly fresh and flavorful. We had a great time here
Be the first to ReplyIt's really affordable to have a 12 piece omakase for $78
It's really affordable to have a 12 piece omakase for $78 and it's BYOB and no corkage fee so that's a plus. So you choose one of 3 appetizers before you start your meal and the tuna was fresh and taste good! The portion size are definitely very generous and the fish overall was good quality... but at times there was inconsistency with the flavor profile and the mix of flavors they put in it. I would give it a 7/10 and I think it's worth it for affordable omakase, but quality wise it's ok! I feel if they can balance their flavor profile or add more flavor, it will turn out much better! It has potential!
