First time coming here for food, attending restaurant week with my spouse. Service and atmosphere are very pleasant, the waitress was exceptionally attentive, as was the maitre d', busboy, and even the manager. Food is a different story. To begin, they serve hot rolls with a slab of butter and olive oil with hebs. Well done! After that, my pleasant meal turned uneventful. Here is a run down. Appetizer: Kabocha Squash Gnocchi with Comte Foam and Creme Fraiche. Served warm, but flavor was lacking. Couldn't really taste the squash. Main: Venison with Daube of King Trumpet Mushrooms, Rum Spiced Banana Puree, and Red Wine Jus. The meat was perfect, but the banana puree combined red wine jus was awful. AWFUL. I wanted to send the dish back, but chose to finish out of respect for the line cooks and servers, avoiding the puree sauce. I get that the chef wanted to tease our taste buds with the contradicting flavors, but in this instance, it was a total failure for me. Dessert: Dark Chocolate Caramel Tart. Flavor good, but clearly this had been in a freezer right before serving. It was like trying to eat a brick - I had to ask for a steak knife to cut up the tart so I could eat it. The cooks should be sure to thaw these out well before serving. To cap of the night, my spouse found a piece of glass the size of his thumb in his dessert - which he didn't notice until it was in his mouth. You can read his review for more details. Overall I wasn't impressed with Marseille. There are better French restaurants in the neighborhood and city at large, though I will commend the staff for excellent service and appreciate the brasserie style atmosphere. Hence 3 starts instead of 2.
