We were near Champaign for a night and decided to stop at Maize at the Station because it had a lot of gluten free reviews. I was excited for the gluten free chips and to get some fajitas. When we first entered it took at least 10 minutes for a hostess to come to the stand. It was busy and they seemed to be short staffed at first. We decided to sit at the bar and the first chips and salsa is free and after that you pay. We decided to do the salsa flight which is unlimited for 4 dollars because I thought it would be nice to have a snack and anticipated it may take awhile to get our food. We ordered one Paloma and 2 waters and it took until our meal came out to get the Paloma and our chips and salsa flight came right before our food. As the night went on it got quieter but the service didn't get better. We asked for more corn tortillas because we only got 4 and in the meantime asked for more chips since they were unlimited. After a while we got our corn tortillas and then our server realized we hadn't got our tortilla chips. We told them to skip it because we didn't want to wait longer for the chips. Our server was nice but I would not return again with the service and the food was just okay.

This place and its staff can't figure out when it's open or closed. Their Facebook post says they are open until 10pm. The hours say 9pm. The website says 10pm. The ordering says 9pm. I call the restaurant and they tell me 10pm. I'm in a study group that gets out at 915 and we were looking forward to getting something before heading home. On Wednesday the lights were off at 925 pm. I called yesterday and asked what time they close, the girl on the phone says 10pm, and told her about them closed at 9pm on Wed. She assured me it was probably just a one time thing. I get there last night and the lights are again off at 930pm. I get closing early ocacassionaly if business is slow, seems like business is always slow if they keep closing early, or maybe they should figure out when they want to be open or closed. Go to another restaurant that can figure out how to stay open.
Be the first to ReplyThe most over-rated Mexican restaurant in CU.
Prices are high, and margaritas are not that good. There are other great Mexican restaurants nearby.
Be the first to ReplyThe veggie burrito is very good.
The rest of the menu is surprisingly large, but being vegetarian I can't eat most of it. Portion sizes are very large. The restaurant is very large, most of the times I've eat there it feels empty because of it.

Best Mexican in CU!! Always great service and food, I've been here many times and never have had an issue. My personal favorite is the birria it's to die for.
Be the first to ReplyBarrio tacos are the best! Staff is always super friendly.
Lots of choices for margaritas. They are all very good!!

Excellent food - the weekend brunch was a nice surprise, and that breakfast torta was absolutely delicious! The drink I had was also lovely: cold brew coffee with horchata. The service was friendly, prompt, and attentive. A great place to eat if you're in downtown Champaign!

Wonderful experience! Great food, fairly priced and very nice service. Especially love fresh made corn tortillas. Sit out on the back patio .. extra nice back there.

Best margaritas I've had in the Champaign area! Made with real fruit puree. Their food is delicious too!

I've tried coming here twice, and they were closed both times despite trying to go during their "open" business hours. There was no signage indicating why they were closed. May give up on this place for the time being. Please note the rating is based on the business being closed when I try to come here, not the food which I haven't tried.
Be the first to ReplyWe ordered a variety of dishes.
My daughter had the tortilla chips and a tiny amount of salsa, 1 slice of the cheese quesadilla, and a small amt of the Spanish rice and refried beans. The food tasted great to all of us while we were eating. However, as soon as we came home, my daughter vomited 4 times within a 4-hour timespan. We are unsure which of the items above led to this, but it was a pretty immediate reaction, saying the cheese quesadilla "felt like a brick in my stomach. The rest of our party also had some of the rice and beans along with our different dishes and are fine. My guess is that it was either the overload of pre-dinner tortilla chips or the cheese quesadilla.
Be the first to ReplyHands down, best dining experience during the 2023
Hands down, best dining experience during the 2023 Champaign County Restaurant week. I ordered chicken tortilla soup and Birria tacos. The chicken tortilla soup was served in an interesting way! The waitress first gave me a bowl of sliced tortilla and then poured the soup into it. Great experience! The Birria tacos were a REAL hit! The tacos were stuffed with stewed beef, super juicy and super generous portion. Add some lime juice and onion and cilantro, it was heavenly! This dish was also served with a bowl of soup and you can dip the taco in it. It was super flavorful! Note: because of the juice inside, your hands may get oily after it!

Huge menu so it's fun to try something new each time. Really good good and staff is great a giving suggestions, too. Nice atmosphere. Great patio in warmer weather. A must do in Champaign!
Be the first to ReplyGood basic Mexican fare.
Tortillas are hot and fresh. Food spiced nicely. My favorite Mexican restaurant in Champaign.

Tried this place at the recommendation of a student, and they did not disappoint! We ordered four tacos traditional style: pastor and corn mushrooms. They were phenomenal. We also ordered enchiladas with salsa verde and zucchini blossoms. Their sauces are divine, the homemade tortillas are so chewy and fluffy, and the portions are generous. Highly suggest trying this place if you haven't!
Be the first to ReplyGreat service and the food had an even greater taste.
Jesus was the perfect waiter and manned the dining room efficiently. Drinks and food are moderately priced and while menu may not be full of "original" Mexican/Latin meals, we throughly enjoyed our dishes! Especially the Queso Fundido (not pictured). Even the music was nice! This Chicagoan would recommend if you're looking for tasty food in Champaign.
Be the first to ReplyWe decided to try this place out for dinner on a Friday
We decided to try this place out for dinner on a Friday night. The staff was very pleasant and service was quick. It was quite crowded which was a good thing. We have had them before, however We always did carry out. This time we decided to dine-in and I am so glad we did. The food was absolutely fresh and they have a lady in the back that makes corn tortillas fresh to order. I choose the Fajita Quesadilla and my meat of choice was Steak! Yummy and was big so only order if you have a big appetite. I was expecting some small plate to come out however to my surprise I couldn't even finish it all. The only thing that I didn't like was parking because they are located downtown. Some parking might be hard to find since other people park downtown and go other places. However if you're in Downtown Champaign, IL stop in at Maize.
Be the first to ReplyI've been here twice and have mixed feelings.
Homemade corn tortillas are good. But they use mozzarella cheese in the quesadilla? Guaq is really good, Chips are so so. Good beans.

I'm from Houston, TX so I know what Mexican food should taste like & this is not it. I went to this restaurant with 3 other friends and we all agreed that this place is beyond average! The food was nowhere near as seasoned as it should've been if it was seasoned at all. Even the guacamole was lacking seasoning which surprised me because that's the easiest thing to make. The only thing that actually tasted good was the margarita which luckily since I was a little tipsy it made the food taste a little better.
