🙂 4/5 - Would have been excellent if not for the trolley wally incident

A Gallic-style all-day brasserie within walking distance of Green Park Station and a stone’s throw of Fortnum and Mason.
Frank’s, the bar we started in was in the basement. It was quite dark. The wine list had tiny writing and so was hard to read. A larger font would do nicely, and lighter surrounds perhaps.
The Gougeres cheese puff balls were delicious. We had to fight over the final one going spare. And so too the braised ox cheek. Washed down with what turned out to be an expensively priced Pour Ma Queule Clos des Fous.
At £45 a bottle, plus 15% service, for a £13 plonk? - was a bit of a p*** take.
In fact, when the sommelier said she would sample it for me, I came out in a cold sweat. That little swig could have well cost me £2.15!
The Terrane Rouges Labastide de Levis 2018, at £30 a pop, had less of a markup. Still... three times the ten-quid-a-bottle price tag found in some wine merchants. Even Fortnum and Mason has lower priced wines I'm certain.
The ambiance was a little overbearing, both in Franks and in the restaurant that we moved to upstairs. But that could be more to do with me having imposter syndrome. It was very upmarket. It would take a little bit of time for me to get used to for sure.
But I did plan on returning as we had a great meal and evening.
Until that is shortly after the presentation of the joy that is said to be the Maison François dessert trolley. This is when things went – “frankly” – south.
The restaurant has published widely that it is headed by 36-year-old restaurateur the Honourable Francois Hugh Nial O'NEILL. (His father’s the 3rd Baron Rathcavan.) Known as “Frank” to his mates, he was nowhere to be seen when I later felt compelled to lodge the complaint.
The young woman who brought the dessert trolley was really attentive and sweet. (No pun intended.) However due to my guest taking some time over choosing a dessert, the head waiter suddenly stormed over and pulled the trolley away. Leaving us somewhat shocked.
He lamely claimed that another customer needed it, which turned out to be untrue. Because he then placed it near an empty wall and proceeded to furtively dress down the young waitress. Presumably for taking too long at our table. But she had done nothing other than take time with some customers. Actually, even though the doors had only just opened some of the staff did seem to be in a pressure cooker. Two of the female waiters were really convivial. One of these had presented the dessert trolley. Hence my defence of her position.
We were upset. The young woman’s treatment clearly showed on her face. A “head” waiter gets about £12-£15ph at Maison Francois, so lord knows what she was on. However, judging by the waiter who took our dessert trolley, I reckon he was on £12 too much. So, what was a memorable experience to say the least, was spoilt by this curious behaviour.
Despite all its aristocratic splendour, I wasn’t going to let this go though. I demanded to speak with the owner or manager. But I got someone else who was seemingly of the same seniority as the rude ****waiter. He apologised. Offered the desserts for free. But, and here’s the rub, with so many aristocrats either running the business or sat at tables quaffing the overpriced wines, I wondered if they would have let matters go too. I doubt it. And, as far as I'm concerned, when you pay those prices, we're all aristos
Chez Restaurants Ltd trades under the style “Maison Francois”. Despite what newspapers say, according to files lodged at Companies House, Lord Michael David Glendonbrook has held significant control since October 2019.
The 78-year-old Conservative was created a life peer in 2011 and is said to be worth well over £200m.
Given the mark up on the wines, this comes as little surprise.
One final gripe... On studying the bill later, I had been charged an extra £4 ‘Charity Donation’? Without any enquiry as to whether I even wanted to make it. And I actually already contribute towards the charity in question.
I've marked down on the service due to the trolley wally incident.
