A Tale of Two Chop Houses
Not exactly the right place to review that I used to dine here in the 1950's several times a year. Always had the filet mignon which came with pickled watermelon rind as garnish. Unforgettable.I was a university student and my well off boyfriend brought me there. Later I moved to London UK and ate at an American style chop house in Soho where the leather chairs had names printed on them such as Joe Dimaggio and Mar ilyn Monroe.

Very warm welcome and impeccable service. We were passing through Detroit and were very pleasantly surprised by this restaurant with its cozy atmosphere. Excellent meat. The icing on the cake: live every evening. We will come back as soon as possible.

Places like this are hard to find. Dark wood, dim lighting, upscale decor, live jazz and a friendly staff. Driving back to Chicago from Atlanta, I went out of my way to return to this special place.

Amazing service, incredible atmosphere. The food was perfect. Our server Pete knows Detroit history as well as the history of the restaurant. The Mac and cheese was super rich and flavorful and the prime steak was top notch.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Place for Special Dinner
Fantastic dinner in a restaurant that still values time honored ways of dining. Not many places still have the guts to inform patrons beforehand that there is a dress code expectation. Very friendly service from everyone from the doorman, the hostess, the bartender, the waiter and server. We had the oysters, wedge salads, steaks, and the carrot cake. They were all fantastic. We walked back to our hotel just before sundown and felt very safe in the area. Will definitely dine there again.
Be the first to ReplyThe Ultimate Dining Experience - Stephanie
We visited Detroit for the first time and chose the LCH for my wifeโs birthday after much consideration. Stephanie was our server, she is a professional that knows the trade of waiting tables. I would rank her in the top 1% of waiters across the industry that we have experienced over the course of my lifetime. We received a warm greeting from the hostess and promptly seated. The restaurant atmosphere will allow you to step back in time to the finest dining you may have experienced pre 1985. Think of the days with no cell phones and people that just want to engage in good times including staff and customers. We had soup, salad, appetizers, entrees, and dessert. Everything was perfect, food, service, ambiance. We didnโt want the evening to end! The dry aged beef was heaven for my wife and myself. Our children ordered snow crab clusters, delicious for all! We had dessert that was icing on the cake. (Ha!) Yes this is an expensive restaurant. If you want the best of the best this restaurant is for you. Request Stephanie.
Be the first to ReplyA wonderful way to celebrate an important, milestone birthday!
Excellent food, wine, and serviceโMarvin was an outstanding waiterโattentive, friendly, made sure we were well looked after. The ambiance is authentic, original (restored) 1930s seating and very comfortable. A jazz trio played throughout our dinner. Just fantastic! The food was deliciousโour filet mignon was cooked to order, tastey and tender. Our side dishes, asparagus and garlic mash potatoes, were excellent. The best cosmopolitan Iโve ever had! And an excellent wine selection.

My wife and I came here for dinner because my sister gave a rave review about the restaurant, and we wanted a nice night out. It doesn't take a lot to make me happy at dinner, but this place struck out in every avenue. When we arrived and headed downstairs, we were behind another couple while waiting for the hostess, and another couple was behind us as well. When the hostess finally got done blatantly flirting with the men in front of us, she looked right past me and my wife and asked the couple behind us if they had been helped yet. There was no mistaking that my wife and I were standing right there in front of her, dressed in business casual, yet she looked beyond us to the couple behind us, clearly dressed up for the evening and looking like money. The couple looked confused and told the hostess that we were there first (obviously,) so she then took our names for our reservation. Our table wasn't ready yet, so we went to the bar. My wife is a recovering alcoholic so she ordered a n/a beer, and you could see the annoyance on the bartender's face when she assumed her tips would be lower because she's serving a nondrinker. She asked if we were eating at the bar, and we said we were waiting for a table and would like to order an app while waiting. She curtly told us we couldn't because it wouldn't be ready... so we waited with a very annoyed bartender at our service. We debated on leaving at that point, feeling extremely uncomfortable and not wanted in this establishment. At this point the other hostess (dressed in an inappropriately painted on red dress) told us our table was ready. We sat down and ordered immediately, considering we were hungry and just wanted our dinner. The waiter took our order and wasn't seen again until we had to flag him down for another drink. When our food arrived, the steak was good, but absolutely not worth the money. My sister later asked what sauce we got with the steak and I asked, "What sauce?" We didn't know it was an option, and certainly weren't offered it, only to learn that their signature sauces are part of what makes the steak. After we finished dinner and paid, we walked by a hostess who didn't even acknowledge our presence and a door man who watched us leave (didn't open the door.) Long story short, we left with a $300 bill and the worst service I've ever had in a restaurant- hands down. If I'm paying $300, it better be amazing all ways around. Next time we want to splurge and take a chance on good service, I'll head to Joe Muer's Seafood instead. Actually, I'd spend the money anywhere else but here.

Outstanding dinner! Pete the Greek is an amazing waiter I brought my Saskatch date to teach him proper dining etiquette and nailed it!!!! Definitely will be back !

I honestly think this IS the best restaurant in the city. It's a true classic and has that old school vibe. The live entertainment is always a plus and is perfectly suited for a nice dinner.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Steakhouse in Detroit
Great atmosphere and even better food. Took my wife for her Birthday dinner while staying in Detroit. The prices are comparable to other Steakhouses we've been to. Our bill was around $250 before tip. Our waitress Britney was really awesome. Special shout out to Dorian the doorman, great positive energy and a nice person.

This restaurant was highly recommended to us while we were in town. Walking in the door, you could tell this was an upscale restaurant. The menu was diverse and I got the smaller filet and a wedge salad. The meal was outstanding and the service was top shelf! If you are in downtown Detroit, this should be a restaurant you put on your list

The ambience is the first thing that stands out to a great dining experience. Our waitress was quick and knowledgeable. Delicious Old Fashioned. Had the beef filet that melted in your mouth accompanied by yummy buttery mashed potatoes. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyGreat service, even better meal!
Wonderful service from the doorman to the hostess to the waitress. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the details of the steak cuts and daily features. The food was amazing and atmosphere was relaxing. I highly recommend if you are looking for a special night out.
Be the first to ReplyVery Disappointing
The atmosphere and the doorman were my favorite parts of the restaurant. We were greeted with a smile. Once inside we sat near the band and enjoyed the music. Our waitress was OK. We started off our meal with buttermilk marinated calamari. That was delicious. Then we we tried a few salads. The iceberg wedge was OK and the heirloom tomato was to die for. We ordered the filet mignon and the waitress was quite rude when we she asked us how we would like our filet cooked. Very disappointing. We also ordered the South African Lobster Tail. Lobster is one of my favorites and this meal was so disappointing. I tried cutting a piece to eat and could barely cut through the meat with a steak knife. Need I explain any more. This was so disappointing. We also had shrimp with the steak and the shrimp were grey, smelled and tasted terrible. This is not the restaurant that I thought it would be and is definitely not worth the money.

To celebrate our anniversary, my husband and I popped into this wonderful restaurant for a bit of a celebration. Chose to sit at the bar where we were well attended to. Delicious steak tartare, salads, shrimp cocktails and excellent cocktails! Service was impeccable. Live music (not too loud) added to the festive experience. Will definitely return.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding anniversary dinner!
First thing, we were met by a professional and welcoming doorman- he was awesome! We had the place to ourselves on a Tuesday night (started to fill in when we were leaving around 7) and the ambiance was cozy and romantic. Live piano was playing as we enjoyed our dinner. I regret I did not ask again which steak my boyfriend ordered- it was a special not on the menu- because it was incredible. He called it a "life changer"! It was the highest grade Japanese waygu beef (I think) and melted in your mouth. Truly incredible. I got the filet mignon which was great but no where near what my boyfriend ordered! For sides we ordered potato wedges which were very crispy and much better than expected, and the "Oscar style" side. The latter was asparagus with lump crab and a bernaise sauce and was very good (especially in the same bite as the filet... So good). They also had a Japanese whisky by boyfriend had been dying to try (also not on the menu) and he LOVED it. Our waitress, Lola, made our evening even more special. Great conversation, great recommendations, and seemed like a genuinely kind and hospitable person. This place is pricey for sure but I expected it (we each had steak and one side and each had one drink, $360). Everyone was accommodating, kind, and welcoming. We will definitely be back for celebration dinners!

Loved this so much! Dark wood, vintage, retro steakhouse feel. Perfect place for our anniversary. We were married in Vegas and had dinner at Lawry's steakhouse which had the same feel. Frank Sinatra playing before the live band started. The beef short ribs were AMAZING and of course the steak was delicious. Fabulous martinis. Will be our new anniversary spot forever <3
Be the first to ReplyMacaroni and Cheese with bonus ingredient plastic!
A group of six of us decided to dine at the London Chop House to celebrate some professional accomplishments and at least one of us left with plastic wrap in our bellies. If you are concerned about unnecessary added ingredients be on high alert here โ the macaroni and cheese contained plastic wrap for one of our party Saturday evening. The evening did not start much better than it concluded โ despite paying a deposit for an 8:30 reservation (which we arrived for at 8:15) we were kept waiting until after 9 to be seated โ just in time for the drinks we had ordered 40 minutes prior to arrive. We were finally able to place our dinner order at 9:40 PM โ a full 70 minutes after the start of our reservation, which was set to conclude at 10:30PM. It was past the end of our reservation time before the food ever arrived โ all the while we patiently kept ourselves engaged and politely forgave the waitress each time she came to apologize for the delays. The plastic wrap truly was the nail on the coffin, and while our server was quick to fetch a floor manager โ I believe Julie was her name โ that interaction with Julie truly signaled the end of our evening. We received an insincere apology that invokes any interaction you could think of with a โKarenโ in the wild. Any establishment can have an off night, and some sincerity or other good gesture could have been enough to rectify some of the experience. After reading some of the other reviews and the ownership response, I regret ever selecting this place to celebrate my friends. I wish I could submit the charge as fraud to American Express, because the nearly $1,000 cost for the evening did not match the experience.
