Terrible foot and service
This is a one star MICHELIN's restaurant but we were so disappointed with the foods and service. We ordered Salted egg yolk shrimp, pan fried bun and hot &sour soup. The salted egg yolk shrimp came first, we found a two inches long things in the dishes so we asked the waiter(the tall guy)next to us. He didn't say anything just took away our the shrimps. After a while, a waitress (not sure she was a manager or waitress) came over and said that wasn't a hair, it must be a piece from the wok brush, it was normal. We were so disappointed what she said, I understand you need to wash the wok with the brush but it shouldn't be in my food. They didn't apologize. We ordered the Shanghai fried noodles to replace the shrimp. The pan fried bun was ok but the fried noodles was so oily and with no taste. The hot and sour soup didn't tasted good too, not the traditional hot and sour soup. We will never come back.
Be the first to ReplyGood authentic Shanghai cuisines!
This Michelin 1-star restaurant has certainly attracted a lot of Shanghai customers, and is a good indication that its cuisine is authentic and living to the expectation of the picky clientele. It is very popular and so reservation is a must and there are two seating time, in which we booked the first slot and come by 6pm.
This is in fact our second time visiting this restaurant. But last time we did not order some of their specialties. Seated at the booth sofa behind the bar counter, it offers better privacy and is ideal for smaller groups. The dรฉcor is pretty simple, emphasizing more on food than the ambience.
To start off we had Drunken Chicken ่ฑ้้้ ($120). The chicken had been marinated well with Chinese yellow wine to infuse with nice aromas and the unique flavours, in a balanced manner. Many restaurants had either added too much wine making the chicken tastes bitter, or too little and unable to highlight the umami note, but this one definitely got it right. A good starter.
The second dish was the seasonal Stir-Fried Hairy Crab Cream with Mung Bean Noodles ่น็ฒ็็ฒ็ฎ ($480). My mouth started to water when it was served, with the golden yellow hairy crab cream fully covering the mung bean noodles underneath. After adding a bit of the special vinegar, the intense flavours from the crab cream was simply amazing. The mung bean noodles were a perfect companion, with a nice chewy texture. Highly recommend especially if you like hairy crab.
The Pea Sprouts in Supreme Broth ไธๆนฏ่ฑ่ ($150) might seem ordinary, but doing it well warranted attention and skills as well. This one scored a high mark, with the pea sprout tender and without fibre, and the supreme broth was able to infuse the vegetables with lots of flavours and umami, and the small amount of shredded ham further enhanced the overall experience.
The true star on the night was Steamed Hilsa Herring Fish ๆธ
่ธ้ฐฃ้ญ ($1,500 for half tail). Requiring one hour to prepare, the fish was big in size, with the chef putting Chinese ham, dried shiitake mushroom and wine lees on top, and plenty of Chinese yellow wine sauce, to steam. The staff then helped to remove the scales and then cut the fish into sections. The wonderful taste from the fish oil, mixed with the yellow wine, the savoury flavours from the ham and the fragrance from the dried mushroom, was simply out-of-this-world. While the fish had many thin bones so requiring attention in eating, the two of us easily finished the whole fish. Really good one.
Wrapping up we had Rice Dumplings with Wine and Osmanthus ้
้ไธธๅญ ($32 each). The dessert was good, with the wine lees and Osmanthus provided a nice fragrance. It was a bit sweeter than I would prefer, but not excessive. The rice dumplings were small in size, with a good bite too.
The service was good, with the server friendly and polite. She advised us that the fish was fairly big, so we did not end up ordering too much. The bill was $2,589 which was reasonable considering what we had on the night. If you want to have some good authentic Shanghai dishes, this one will be a good choice.
Quite over-priced
One of famous Shanghainese restaurants in Hong Kong which is more of upmarket. Prices are a bit too high versus peers of the same or better category. Dishes were generally tasty but not quite the best. Interior fittings were good. Not that value for money though.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Food in a Noisy Setting
This is great Shanghainese food. There were 7 of us and we had a great meal. We didn't choose anything too spicy and the taste of the dishes we ordered was excellent. This is probably the third time I've been here and the consistency of the offerings is very good.
Unfortunately we had a few yound children running around where their parents totally ignored them and the noise in the restaurant from the yelling of the kids made it very difficult to hold a conversation. Once they left it was much more comfortable.
This is well worth a visit.
Consistently good
One of the best Shanghainese restaurants in town, this place is very well known and always consistent. We like coming here for family dinners!
Be the first to ReplyPoor Service, Food Not Delicious, Pricey
Not worth a visit at all. I came alone for dinner and ordered sweet and sour pork, chef fried rice. The pork is thin but the coating fried flour is thick and dry. The fried rice is so so with very small shrimps. I am sure I cook much better. The pot of Pu Er tea I ordered is tasteless.
Service is poor. The staff are indifferent, set back, seldom came to my table area although all the tables were empty when I entered the restaurant at about 7pm.
I could see that all the guests (who came later) were return guests and they were all aged people ๐ต๐ผ๐ด๐ผ
The environment is not attractive and there is no view. The plates used are dull small and just like a tea saucer ๐.
My bill is around HKD300, pricey with such quality of food and quality. I recommend you not to try this place.
Nobody speaks English yet the best welcome
For this place, my comment would be how good feelings can connect people better than the words... I gave a try to this place regarding the reviews. Taste-wise it depends on what youโd expect, I am not familiar with Shanghai cuisine so canโt make comparisions. Definitely hygenic, a fine-dining choice. Menu is also in English but if you need to ask some questions or some adjustments, nobody speaks English. Yet if youโd like to have a great experience with very traditional table servings and excellent service please spoil yourself at this pavilion.
