Little alley is definitely a to go place for some "alley" Shanghainese food. There menu are a mixed of traditional Shanghai and dim sum! My favorite are definitely the crab soup dumping and dong pork with buns. Great services and very nice host!

Soo delicious food!! Similar flavor as what I ate in Shanghai. The Dong Po Pork is the best and I also love their soup dumplings and vege dumplings! Their cocktails are specially made. I really like what I drank is called class 3-2, very fresh. Great food, great service, and great environment! We'll be back
Be the first to ReplyThis is the first time to eat at Little Alley.
What they provide is not authentic Shanghainese food and it has been Americanized. The food taste is really not good. Also the quantity of dish is small. I will not come to this place again.
Be the first to ReplyThis was a pretty average place to grab Chinese food.
The potstickers were crispy on the outside, and the eggplant had a nice flavorful sauce. The mapo tofu was just fine - I thought the sauce was a bit too watery. I also had a hot cocktail called the wife which reminded me of a hot toddy - pretty good. Overall, I was neither impressed nor disappointed.

I just moved into the neighborhood and was astonished to discover this place, which seems transported from Shanghai and just dropped on 3rd Ave! I don't have anything to add to the accolades about the food and service, except "Amen!" There is one disappointment though: the dumplings really aren't very good. The dough is MUCH too thick, which covers up the taste of the filling. And the soup dumplings have almost no soup. I've tried them on three different occasions so I guess that is just how they make them. Too bad. You're better off getting them at the chain restaurant DAO on Madison. Still, what a blessing to have this so close!!!

Lunch special is still awesome and portions are pretty generous. 10/10 when I'm craving my moms red braised pork belly
Be the first to ReplyYall - such a tasty dinner at Little Alley tonight.
It's a little cold out and I am just getting over a little cold so I thought some won ton soup sounded like a good idea. Yes. Yes it was a good idea. I would highly recommend and cannot wait to go back to Little Alley myself. The service and the ambience were great. In addition to the won ton soup. I also had Shanghai Shu Mai dumplings, which were out of this world good. The sticky rice was legit. Like legit legit. So so good! Going back - and you should too!
Be the first to ReplyGreat service.
Nice food. Amazing place to visit! the fishbloosm and luffa are the must.
Be the first to Replythe place serves slightly above average chinese food.
it is not bad, but it is not chinatown quality. if you are in the neighborhood, it is better than most of the others nearby. keep you expectations in check, and you might have a good meal. not many vegan options, but thats to be expected. solid 3.5 stars. giving 4 because the service is good.
Be the first to ReplyLittle Alley was a cute lil spot in Midtown East.
We ordered the right delicacies in chili sauce and the dongpo pork belly with buns. Both dishes came with rice. Both dishes were also super yummy and the portions were quite large. My friend and I were unable to finish everything, we ended up packing some to go. I definitely see why this spot is Michelin guide.

Little Ally is a Shanghainese restaurant located in the heart of the city. From the moment you step inside, you'll be transported to the bustling streets of Shanghai with the lively atmosphere, traditional decor, and delicious aromas wafting from the kitchen. The menu at Little Ally is extensive and features a variety of classic Shanghainese dishes such as Xiaolongbao, crispy duck, spicy beef noodle soup, and braised pork belly. The dishes are expertly prepared, with each one bursting with flavor and authentic taste. However, it's worth noting that the prices at Little Ally are on the higher side, which may not be suitable for those on a tight budget. That being said, the quality of the food and the overall dining experience makes it worth the price for a special occasion or a treat. Honestly, it wasn't because the restaurant is right next to where I live. I might not give it a shot in the first place, but I am glad I did
Be the first to ReplyI randomly searched Chinese food and this place popped up.
I LOVE IT! First, the service is excellent. They are very professional and nice. They ALWAYS keep your water filled (so rare these days). Prices are super reasonable, the soup dumplings are probably the best I've had in nyc. I like how thin the skin is! Practically transparent. I asked for the pea shoots to be cooked the way the bok choy is cooked and they were so accommodating. They were super delicious as well, garlicky, addicting paired with rice. The crispy duck is super good too. Super crispy and the sauce is sweet and sour. The restaurant is a little dark and has a cool old-timey telephone booth in the middle. Gives 1900s Chinatown vibes. I would totally come back for more soup dumplings, more pea shoots. And maybe try their fish next time or braised pork. Everything on the menu looked good!

Food (5/5): Ordered Yan Du Xian, Little Alley Lion's Head, Dong Po Pork with Buns, Braised Yellow Croaker, Soup Dumplings, and Soft Shell Crab with Rice. All were delicious and very good! My favorites were the Lion's Head which is delicious minced pork, the Pork Buns and fish were also top notch. Overall quality ingredients and dishes. Service (5/5): Excellent service with attentive waiters. They did a good job of recommending dishes and being very polite. Ambiance (5/5): The restaurant is really clean and with well placed decorations. The utensils, bowls and plates were high quality. Overall ambiance feels upscale but to pretentious.

Prices are gathered from there also. I was here with one my usual groups where we shared a lot of food. The food quality ranged from very good to pretty bad and I would say that the majority of the dishes were a tad sweet even compared to most Shanghainese spots I've been to. The service was alright. I got the White Windmill with Baiju, Tito's vodka, wang wang milk, fresh lime juice, and vanilla syrup. They originally gave me just the wang wang milk but replaced it soon enough. The drink was very sweet (the vanilla syrup is very likely not necessary) and even after being replaced with the proper drink was surprisingly didn't taste much like alcohol (even with the baiju.) I think it was $19 or $20 and it wasn't worth it.From the appetizer section, the Shanghai Crispy Eel/无锡脆鳝 ($16) had said eel with sesame oil, vinegar, and ginger. The sauce reminded me of another Wuxi dish we ordered and the eel was small but nicely fried with a good crispness. It was in short similar to the nearby Café China. The Honey Kao Fu/烤麩 ($12) with braised gluten wheat, peanut, wood ear, and bamboo shoot was very solid. I have had kaofu/wheat gluten from other Shanghainese spots and this place in particular had some good tenderness and it wasn't overly sweet compared to some other places. Would recommend heavily. The Braised Wuxi Ribs/無錫排骨 ($22) with baby ribs and romaine stem was also pretty good with a similar sauce to the eel. The portion size could have been better but the park was tender and well flavored and I likely would recommend it. Also from the pork section was the Rice Cake & Capsella Flower/荠菜炒年糕 ($14) with sesame oil. The portion size of this dish was good for the price but I found the textures of the rice cakes to be bit off. There's supposed to be a slight crispiness. The flavor was alright with some slightly chewy pork and said green and I would say it was only worth it because of it's relatively cheaper price compared to most other dishes. The Pork Belly in Hot Sauce/回鍋肉 ($20) with garlic, hot sauce, peppercorn, and sesame oil was essentially their take on double cooked pork. It had slight spiciness from the chili oil and the pork was pretty tender. Overall it was alright. Finally the Dong Po Pork/东坡肉 ($24) or braised pork belly with bok choy, scallion, sweet sauce, sesame oil, and buns also had very tender pork belly but was much sweeter than other versions of this dish I've had. The Stir-Fried Cumin Lamb/孜然羊肉 ($26) with green and red pepper, onion, cumin, and chili powder was alright. The lamb could have been a bit more tender and the portion size could have been a bit bigger for the price. The Crispy Duck/香酥鸭 ($32) with fried onion, salt, and pepper was by far the worst dish and also the most overpriced. The small pieces of duck were very dry and the duck was boney and neither of our tables finished it. The Salted Duck Egg Fish Filet/咸蛋黄鱼片 ($24) was one of the better dishes. The salted duck egg added a good texture and the fish was tender and succulent. Less successful of the fish dishes was the Fish Blossom/松子全鱼 ($36) with sea bass, shrimp, pine nut, green and red pea, sweet and sour sauce, and crispy rice was probably our other least favorite dish. It was cloyingly sweet even compared to other versions I've had and the fish was over-fried with an unappetizing texture. This is a pricey alright Shanghainese spot. The prices are more similar to CheLi but I would say the food quality isn't as good mostly because of consistency. If the weaker dishes were as good as the rest, I would give this place quite a high rating even if the cocktail wasn't good. Perhaps they should reduce their menu and concentrate on making the dishes more flavorful and consistent?

I was invited to try the tasting menu with a friend and everything was delicious - some of the best Chinese food I've had in the city so far. The interior is clean and nicely decorated and the service was great. For each dish we had below:Shanghai 1943 + Class 3-2: My friend was a huge fan of his drink and said it was very refreshing. The Shanghai 1943 was also lightly sweet and I really liked the rose rosemary simple syrup. Pork Xiao Long Bao: Very juicy! The dumpling skin was thin (not thick and doughy at all) and the soup itself was rich in flavor. Paired really well with the Chinese vinegar on the side and was a great start to our meal.Soft Shell Crab Rice Cakes: By far my favorite dish from the tasting menu. The crab was crispy fried and completed the chewy rice cakes really well. Would definitely come back just to order this!Braised Yellow Croaker: Crisp but tender, paired well with the sweet + salty pork sauce and vegetables. Dong Po Pork Buns: Very generous pork belly portions, super tender + not overwhelmingly fatty. Buns were also so soft and held up well throughout the meal. Overall, everything here was delicious with great portion sizes and service!

I was so delighted to have the opportunity to try their tasting menu as an "influencer". So I brought a friend with me and we have the option to select four dishes and one drink for each of us. The following are the dishes I got along with the ratings based on my expertise with Shanghainese cuisine: - Yi Du Xian Soup (7/10): It basically has the essences of the authentic Yi Du Xian. The material in the soup is pretty abundant, including salty pork, pork belly, bamboo shoots, bok choy, tofu skin and shiitake mushroom. The portion is way enough for 2-3 people. It is light and flavorful and my friend was very into it. However, in my memory, Yi Du Xian supposed to be very tasty because of the flavor from the salty pork which I don't find much from this soup. With that being said, the soup is good but it can be better. - Dong Po Pork with Buns (8/10): Dong Po Pork is basically braised pork belly. I love the texture of the pork which is so tender and soft and it can melt right away in your mouth. That is some skill they mastered to make the meat that way. The buns can help to reduce the greasy from the fat. It is a smart combo. The downside is the flavor of the meat is not strong enough. The sweetness in the bun kind of overpowered the meat flavor. So I think the meat flavor can be enhanced a bit. After all, the pork is the leading role in this dish. - Soft Shell Crab with Rice Cake (10/10): My friend and I both agreed this is the best dish I had. Everything is just perfect. The rice cakes are in thin slices and not doughy at all. Soft shell crab is literally so soft and chewable and flavorful. Also, there's no any fishy sense from the crabs. Very impressive!- Braised Yellow Croaker (9/10): The fish is very tender and delicious. The dish has ginger, garlic, soy sauce and oyster sauce which create phenomenal taste for the fish. One point off is because I find it a bit too sweet. Usually you need to add some sugar to highlight the flavor but it is important to make sure the right amount of it. For the drinks, we got Adorable Woman and The Wound of War. They both are very decent. Not light and not too strong. Also, I find it interesting that the names of the cocktails on the menu are all referenced from a Taiwanese singer's (Jay Chou) songs. I guess the creator must be a loyal fan of the singer. lolAdditionally, we also got a free dessert since I checked in on Yelp. We got Sticky Rice with Lotus Root (9/10). It is the best lotus root dessert I have tried so far in New York. Some sticky rice in a few bites is still a bit hard to chew which means the rice was not steamed enough yet. Also, I think it will be better to add more honey. Since it is a dessert, it should be sweeter. The atmosphere is very great and gets busy around 7-8 pm. It is not a huge restaurant, but enough for some groups. You can also just sit by the bar to have some drinks. I highly recommend Little Alley if you are interested in Shanghainese food. The dishes may not be 100% the same as the ones I had from my hometown but pretty close enough. I will definitely come back to try some other dishes from the regular menu!

Randomly went to this spot one night and was surprised how delicious it was! Food was very good and large portions for the price. I'm looking forward to go back.

My boyfriend and I came to Little Alley for dinner on a Sunday night. We arrived a little bit after 6pm and, even though there was plenty of seating available at this time, there were definitely more people than I anticipated which is always a good sign! The very kind hostess guided us to our table and handed us menus. Then, our server really promptly came by to offer us water and tell us he would check back in a few minutes for our order. He was really attentive of us the whole time. I was very impressed by the interior of the restaurant-- the decor with exposed brick walls, neon lights, the wooden telephone booth in the corner, and dim lightning really transport you and make you feel like you are in a different place. The ambiance has a little hint of mystery and excitement because of this, I loved it a lot! For drinks we ordered the Class 3-2 which was a drink that had cucumber, lime, and aloe, as well as the Moulin Rouge which had some hints of raspberry, mint, and lime. I loved the Class 3-2 since it had a very subtle sweet flavor but had these small chunks of cucumber which added a tiny bit of bitterness and a really nice texture. The Moulin Rouge was tart and refreshing. It was also delicious! For food we ordered and shared: Yan Du Xian: This soup really hit the spot. It was loaded with very hearty ingredients that made it feel super comforting and nourishing. It came with a very mild broth that was very subtly salted and had a little bit of the flavor of pork in it. It also came loaded with veggies like bok choy, shiitake mushrooms, and bamboo shoot which made it healthy and filling. Finally, it had some tofu skin, as well as pork belly that was incredibly tender, with salted pork pieces that tasted a lot like bacon and added a little bit of saltiness to the dish without being overpowering. Probably my favorite thing that I tried here! It felt very healthy, filling, and wholesome. This is the kind of soup I would want on a rainy day or if I am sick. Portion size was incredibly generous. Pork Soup Dumplings: This comes with 6 dumplings. The dumpling skin was perfectly cooked, and they were generously filled with flavorful pork. I think what stood out to me was the broth inside them-- it was so rich and full of flavor with predominant umami hints balanced by a subtle flavor of ginger all soaked up in the dumpling skin. My boyfriend said these were the best pork dumplings he has had in the city and that he would come back to Little Alley just for these. I definitely suggest getting them as a dish to share. They are delicious and really satisfying! Also very nice to eat when the weather is cold, they just warm you up inside. Worth trying!Braised Yellow Croaker: whole yellow croaker that comes braised in this really thick, sweet/sour sauce which was to die for. It comes loaded with shiitake mushrooms, peppers, as well as a little bit of pork. The fish was incredibly tender and the meat was so easily taken off the bone. Very well prepared! I was impressed. It comes with a side of white rice so you can pair them together and it goes really well. Had never had croaker braised but loved this preparation. Would definitely order this again. Shanghai Stir Fried Thick Noodle: another fantastic dish! The noodles were well cooked and were (as the name implies) very thick, which I really enjoyed as a girl who loves her carbs. They were chewy and really soaked up all the ingredients. I was worried it would be a dish on the saltier side but I was pleasantly surprised to find this is a lot more mild that it appears to be (coming from someone who is very salt sensitive.) This was very enjoyable, substantial, and hearty. It came with plenty of mushrooms, pork, shrimp, and greens that all added great flavor and textures. Portion size was pretty large! Truly loved the thick noodles. Overall, I had a wonderful dinner at Little Alley. The ambiance was really unique which is great for a date night, the service was exceptional, and the food had outstanding quality for a really reasonable price. The portion sizes were large and we left very happy and satisfied with our meal. Definitely check out this restaurant if you are looking for some delicious Shanghainese food. 11/10 would recommend! Can't wait to return in the future for more great eats.

I was invited to Little Alley to try some of their new Shanghainese dishes, as a member of Yelp Elite. I was able to try 4 different dishes all of which offered something different. My friend and I were able to have the Pork Soup Dumplings, Dong Po Pork Buns, Shanghainese thick noodles, and the soft shell crab and rice cakes. The pork soup dumplings were cooked very well and tasted even more flavorful. The crab is fried to perfect and they give you so many rice cakes to eat with it, its perfect. The noodles were what you'd expect it to be. Think noodles, flavorful sauce, veggies and shrimp. You cannot go wrong. Our favorite by far was the Dong Po Pork Buns. The pork was fall apart and so tender it made everything taste better. The buns were perfectly soft and wrapped the pork beautifully.I would definitely recommend Little Alley to others. It is great for groups and I would for sure come back to try some of the other dishes that are on the menu!

Be the first to ReplyI don't dislike Little Alley.
But I also don't love it the way that other people seem to ... or even my husband, who seems to like it a tad more than I do and can overlook the overpriced (but mediocre) dim sum and small portioned (but mediocre) main courses and spotty service. I don't mind paying for overpriced dumplings and the like, or ever paying more for smaller portioned main courses providing that the taste and quality of deliciousness were equally higher than expected. For me the biggest problem I have with Little Alley (or the two biggest problems) is the inconsistency of the food and the service. Some days it can be OMG so amazingly good. But other times it can be OMG what the f**k were we thinking in coming here. Clearly people like this place. It's always packed at night.I love Shanghainese food more than most other Asian cuisines, except maybe Korean. Though I go through phases for each. And maybe I'm spoiled because I could eat Asian seven-nights a week and we tend to go to higher priced or more authentic spots. I guess it's partly on me because I always think Little Alley will be better than it is, and then it's just not.

This is the perfect spot to bring your family for traditional Shanghainese food. Everything was soooooo delicious. And the price and value and quality of food you get is amazing. I came with 2 friends, we ordered the Pork buns, crispy chicken, crispy duck, soup dumplings, stir fried thick noodles and we got a free dessert for checking in on Yelp. The entire meal came out to $50 per person. Everything was a 10/10. Crispy duck - to die for. Super crispy and juicy and had the perfect about of duck fat. The dipping sauce was also really flavorful Sautéed chicken in hot chili - super crispy and perfectly seasoned. It had the perfect amount of spice and went really well with white rice. Pork soup dumplings - everything you want in a soup dumpling, great amount of broth and great flavor. The vinegar sauce went really well with it. Pork Buns - the pork belly was super tender and the buns were the perfect fluffy texture.Noodles - the noodles were chewy and bouncy and the pork in the noodles was really flavorful and tender The service here was very attentive and the staff was super friendly. Little Alley is definitely worth a visit.
