Stunning stay in Cartmel
Wonderful experience at an undeniably excellent restaurant. The 15 course tasting menu was stunning- each course was so flavoursome and immaculately presented. It would be difficult to pick a favourite as each course was amazing. The service was attentive without being distracting. The wine flight was well matched and we will certainly go again. We had a 2 night package and had a great experience at Rogan and co ,the night before. The rooms were above the restaurant and comfortable and luxurious. Definitely worth 5 stars

Where do I start…..? Perfect in every way, the food is amazing, the staff are so knowledgeable and attentive, the decor and even the cutlery are just “right”. I not going to go through the whole 15 courses but they are just fantastic. I also met Simon and got a selfi with him, what a nice guy. We will be going back soon.

Be the first to ReplyThe incredible L’Enclume
First thing I’ve got to say is that none of what I’m about to describe is intentionally hyperbolic … L’Enclume is just that good an experience that I’ll probably struggle to do it justice. My second observation is that I’m glad I waited until now to visit this restaurant. We’ve been wanting to visit for some time but it’s definitely something that I’m glad I’ve built up to with other fine dining experiences first because it helps to be able to truly experience how great L’Enclume is. It at least helps with providing some context about how special this restaurant is. It’s cliche to say that a big part of a great restaurant is often that it’s humble in many aspects but then amazes you with what unfolds from there. With L’Enclume it’s true. It starts with the village itself. Cartmel is small, quaint and it’s almost a surprise that this great restaurant suddenly appears before you. From the exterior L’Enclume, with its simple name plaque on the wall, is very unassuming. Inside there are several features of the old blacksmiths that the building used to be home to. The main dining room is magnificent and the atmosphere straight away is relaxed but special at the same time. Right from the start the service is just on a different level than I’ve experienced before. The friendliness mixed with just the efficiency of how the staff work and tag-team with each other has to be a significant part of why it has 3 stars. Nothing is oversold and everything is presented and described with care and knowledge. Now the food. It’s a 15 course tasting menu and the recurring theme is that this is simply the best food I’ve ever eaten. The ‘snacks’ start telling you what this is all about. The beetroot and mackerel tart and then the Corra Linn pudding in particular were incredible. Everything exceeds expectation but the the menu really steps up with a trio of dishes starting with the celeriac which has a great marrying of sweetness and smokiness coupled with the saltiness of the sauce (which was amazing to eat the remainder of with a spoon). From there was the amazing pink fir apple potatoes cooked in chicken fat which is almost indescribably good. Following that was possibly the ultimate highlight of the seaweed custard, beef broth and bone marrow. But honestly it’s difficult to say what the highlight dish was because my main observation is that unlike any other menu I’ve had this was relentlessly brilliant. The monkfish and the duck … the best monkfish and duck I’ve ever eaten. Then there’s the desserts and this is where the menu differentiates itself from many others. Sometimes the desserts on a menu don’t quite live up to the rest of the dishes but not here. In fact for some this may be their favourite part of the menu. The caramel mousse ‘anvil’ is the signature dessert and the tastes and textures here are incredible. Before you get to that you’ll wonder what you are eating when you tuck into the Tunworth cheese and malt crumb with its textures and temperatures and realise it’s a great start to a selection of brilliant desserts. There’s nothing else I can say but visit L’Enclume if you are considering it. Make the trip to Cumbria and treat yourself to something on a different level. And it is a treat. Fine dining on this level isn’t cheap but if this type of experience is something you occasionally allow yourself to indulge in then you have to come and do this at least once. You won’t be disappointed.

This is simply the most exceptional restaurant and it is clear to see why it has achieved its third star. This was our fifth visit and - as with previous visits - we were delighted by the warmth of the staff (Tom even remembered us from last time), the uniqueness and quality of the food and wine pairings and the faultless, warm, unstuffy but precise service. If I was celebrating something, I would come here.

One of the best meals I have ever had - and I have eaten in dozens of 3-star restaurants in the UK and outside. Definitiely ranks in my top 10. Every dish bar one was, I thought, outstanding. only one I didn't care for and that is very much personal. 15 course tasting menu is "reasonable" value for a resto of this quality at £250/head but a bottle of wine; champagne by the glass etc increased the bill to nearly £1000 for two. Cooking is creative; technically excellent; delicious........running out of superlatives. Ambiance comfortable and warm; staff super.

Fantastic taste journey. 14 dishes - all from own farm or local producers. Relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. Accommodating and friendly staff with a twinkle in their eye. The food was incredibly flavorful, every single ingredient could be tasted. The wine menu was well coordinated. The restaurant is subdued and has an incredibly cozy atmosphere. It is an incredibly wonderful experience both in terms of food and service. We can highly recommend eating here and would love to come again.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Food, staff, accommodation were all fantastic. It would be hard to criticise anything about L'Enclume. The staff we very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the food and wine. We visited the farm the next day and John who oversees it was amazing. Great to see the ethos from farm to plate carried out to such a high standard.

Absolutely faultless, every course was clever and sublime and the service was on another level, truly exceptional. Our first 3 star experience, we will definitely be back.

Quite simply, one of the best restaurant experiences I’ve ever had. Having now tried all but one of the 3 Michelin Starred restaurants in the UK, L’Enclume really does excel! From start to finish, every aspect of the meal was perfect, nothing else really needs to be said

Beyond the best! Each time we ask can it get better? It does! Friend with us from Melbourne… We all agreed… BEST MEAL OF OUR LIVES… Can I say more ? I must…. Flavours in new dishes today spectacular… There is no resting on laurels or complacency here… The aim is constantly for better… Nowhere on the planet offers better service! Or better food … Here is vitality… freshness… innovation… vibrancy… theatre… It simply doesn’t get better than this… And we feel well placed to comment working in the industry… We know what it takes… Thanks a million guyz for all you do to bring joy and happiness Austin and Tim Millgatehouse Richmond

Just go. I'll not waffle on about the food, wine and service, it's about as good as good can get. This was supposed to be a once in a lifetime experience. I suspect it won't be and we will be back.

Absolutely faultless. Beautiful anniversary meal with exceptional service in stunning surroundings. An absolute must do for foodies.

The meal and service as a whole was worthy of the three stars Michelin has awarded. The 14 course tasting menu was simply exquisite but what sealed the deal on excellence were the staff. They were informative, friendly and they obviously not only enjoyed what they were doing but they worked very well together making the experience all the more special

The hype was absolutely worth it, this being our 3rd Three Star restaurant to visit and by far the best so far, as ever excellent service, knowledgable and friendly staff, the food was sublime ( the bill maybe not so ..but hey!) The chairs were really uncomfortable ( should swap them with the ones at Rogan & Co!) which is why I wont be giving a 5 star review
Be the first to ReplyFood theatre - worth ‘The Trip’
So, back again. One more star. Excellent as ever. Stunning in fact. Weekday lunch. Special occasion. Super attentive and friendly service. Well why wouldn’t you visit this fantastic place? Cartmel is off the beaten track, nestled in the lesser known part of the Lakes (Grange-over-Sands anyone?). It is a destination/special occasion venue. Lovers of Coogan/Brydon will recognise the place from their first adventures on their brilliant series of The Trip now extended through Europe. Both the village and restaurant are very quaint and ‘charming’. We were charmed also by the very attentive service. Wow there is a lot going on. Open kitchen, personal attention, staff everywhere. Pure theatre. The star of the show undoubtedly is the food. Treat yourself to the 14 courses and wine pairing. Go on, you deserve it. No need to go into detail on the courses. Read other reviews or just sit back and enjoy. Needless to say it takes time. Needless to say it is expensive (although check out Heston...). And to all those who begrudge what a course constitutes, you are really in the wrong place - get back to the Toby...

What an amazing meal and restaurant. We had had L’Enclume on our to do list for a very long time and we booked about six months ahead for this New Years Eve lunch. We were actually sat where Rob Bryson and Steve Coogan sat for their series - great seats and a fabulously relaxed atmosphere. We expected for the bill to be frankly obscene (and it was - thought I was going to have to sell a kidney to afford it) - but without this sounded ridiculous, it was worth every single penny. We went for the taster menu and wine flight - each course and complementary glass were amazing. The combinations of tastes were sublime. Clearly not over-facing but equally we didn’t go home hungry either. The best thing about the restaurant was the service - they managed to keep it relaxed and casual. They remained very humble about the restaurant and the quality of the food. All the servers and managers were very friendly and personable. Absolutely loved our time….. but it may be a once in a lifetime experience as I need my remaining kidney!
Be the first to ReplyPerfection! 'Worth a special journey'
If Michelin introduced a fourth star this restaurant would be a definite contender. It is certainly deserving of the ‘worth a special journey’ criteria awarded by Michelin when the 3 star category was first introduced in 1931. Having eaten at several 3 star restaurants in the past, this one was something really special. The Anvil branding with a nod to the past practices of the restaurant building was very cleverly executed, something that this restaurant does in abundance. The metal working theme continued throughout the meal with the use of beautifully crafted metal cutlery of varying shapes and sizes. Also impressive was the simplicity and creativity of the individually presented dishes made of stone and other local materials. This restaurant is clearly proud of its Cumbrian roots and the taster menu takes you on a superb exploration of locally sourced food, whilst also celebrating the history and heritage of this beautiful part of the country. In our opinion the stand out dishes from the 14 dish taster menu were the Raw Cartmel Valley Roe Deer in Coal oil and the Cornish Cod with rainbow chard, Mylor prawns, Bay shrimp and Rosehip. The Frozen Tunworth cheese with malt crumb, preserved quince and lemon Thyme was a revelation!!! There are no gimmicks here, if you are expecting a restaurant staffed by arrogant and serious looking European waiters and pretentious looking guests talking in lowered voices at their tables this breaks from the stereotype. The staff were professional and knowledgeable as you would expect, but there was a quiet confidence and an ability to engage in conversation with guests at the table without dropping the professional restaurateur badge. An absolute highlight for us was being invited to visit the kitchen and given a tour of the inner workings of a busy fine dining kitchen during full evening service. This was not an honor reserved for the select few but most guests on neighboring tables were also given the option. Without a doubt one of the best and most memorable dining experiences we have encountered. We live over 5 hours drive away but would certainly plan another weekend in Cumbria with L’Enclume at the top of our itinerary.

Amazing right from the very beginning! We were made to feel comfortable and welcome as soon as we stepped into the restaurant. The food is outstanding; it isn't a meal, it's a journey of experimental tastes and unbelievable presentation that is stretched out over the space of 3.5 hours! The most wonderful thing about this restaurant is the staff. Every single person who served us took the time to get to know us which simply added to the entertainment factor as course after course arrived. The whole place runs like clockwork, not one thing has been overlooked; even when you leave the table to visit the bathroom, your napkin has been re-folded and put back in its place. The attention to detail, the care and the rapport that the staff build with you make this a really special place to visit. We will definitely be returning!

We have not quite run out of superlatives!!! But almost … As world travellers , utter snobs and perfectionists we are not easily please! We also work in hospitality and train up and comings … so feel well placed to comment… The staff training here is nigh on faultless … The service is close to perfection… The food today was sublime… The wine advice was some of the best ever… If I had to select a place for my last meal on earth it would be here! At 76 not out I hope I have a few more innings with the team at L Enclume… What a blissful experience… For all the energy commitment humility attention to detail and passion we THANKYOU … You give joy! Just on our way home from a gorgeous experience here. Our waiter, Joel was superb as he was Michelin standard professional yet knew how to have a laugh! Each course was absolutely delicious, the kitchen tour made us feel special and the cheese table to choose from was amazing. I am pregnant and my husband doesn’t drink so we were offered the soft drink pairing which we absolutely appreciated! Brilliant sommelier. Now to buy the kombucha, cutlery and crockery! Thank you, we’ll be trying your other recommended restaurant, Hen Rock very soon!

We had also booked a long while ago for a Sunday-Monday package. I was phoned many months ago explaining the fact the decision to not open on Mondays had been made and offered a number of alternatives. We we subsequently contacted twice before our stay to check everything was OK and to note the increase in price of the tasting menu. On arrival welcomed at the main restaurant and shown to our room in the adjacent building. Beautifully decorated with very comfortable bed and beautiful bathroom. Nicely eccentric room as I doubt any of the walls and floor are level or at a right angle. Now to the main feature, the tasting menu. I had extremely high expectations and concerns it might be style over substance, ABSOLUTELY NOT the case. Service throughout was exemplary, and from the very first amuse bouche tasters the food was outstanding. Several dishes amazed us, neither of us would order eel, but the fritter of pig and eel was exquisite. I'll not wax lyrical on other courses other than to mention the frozen cheese desert, one of the top 3 deserts I have ever eaten. Wine pairing was also excellent. Atmosphere was great, I was fearing stuffed shirts and quiet whispers, not so, a very lively and enjoyable 4 hours for the experience.

What an experience. To see the front of the house and chefs flawlessly working as a team was an absolute delight. And the food…. Of course just magical. Our first experience of 3 Michelin for my birthday definitely did not disappoint. Thank you so much for the amazing experience.

I don't know why, but until recently L'Enclume hadn't really appealed to me. I wish it had and that I had been here sooner. It can be summed up in one word - perfection. The food was superb, even better than I was expecting. It's not just the food though, the service was exceptional. The waiting staff were all friendly and chatty, they managed to strike that line between letting my partner and I had whilst being attentive. It's hard to pick a stand out dish, if pushed I would say that the berkswell pudding wins but there's very little in it. The cheese course is a thing of beauty, I'm glad we had enough room left for it. We will, without doubt, be back.
