Laurel Budapest Reviews from The Last Year
Fine dining restaurant in a historic building
Laurel is a fine dining venue situated on the Pest side of the Danube River, conveniently close to the Oktogon metro station. The ambiance strikes a perfect balance between elegance and comfort. Ahead of our visit, I requested a pescatarian menu, which was seamlessly arranged by blending options from both the standard and vegetarian menus available. The wine pairing, curated by an exceptionally knowledgeable sommelier, was excellent and consisted solely of local wines from Hungary. The culinary focus on texture was evident and impressive, though we found the flavors a tad too subdued for our liking. We tend to prefer more robust, flavor-rich dishes, but this is a matter of personal preference. The service throughout our meal was both thoughtful and meticulous, ensuring that we, along with all other patrons, felt thoroughly looked after.
A 5-star dining experience
I must tell that this was our best restaurant experience ever. Laurel represents the very best of fine dining, with wonderfully accommodating staff, food of the highest quality and great wine choices of course. We enjoyed a splendid 3 hour dinner, we tried both the chef's and the vegan tasting menu, and I can only recommend all couples to do the same. Zsuzsi's desserts oftentimes hitting the peak of flavor combinations that made our brains go mushy with euphoria. The wine pairings were at least as good as Péter's professional, yet light and funny presentations. We can only recommend the place to everyone, an unforgettable experience! Thank you!
Hungarian cuisine 2.0
Hungarian cuisine 2.0. Ingredients and classics of Hungarian cuisine are interpreted in a modern way and brought to the plate with lots of umami. Plus a Hungarian, very harmonious wine pairing that was conveyed in a friendly and professional manner. They have a reduced “children’s menu” for children, which is also deliciously handcrafted.
Sober elegance
We celebrated my partner's birthday, there were six of us. First of all I must say that from the moment of booking, made online, they were very attentive to our possible requests and needs. Nice place, minimal, elegant and with few tables. Equally elegant and courteous staff. I was very impressed, when I asked for the toilet, to be accompanied and to have the door opened for me both when entering and leaving. Perfect service, sublime food, elaboration of local dishes. Exceptional wine. I highly recommend it
Wild and Red
Last night we attended the Trezor Klub Wild and Red themed event at the Laurel restaurant, where we could taste Hungarian, French and Australian red wines alongside the wonderful game dishes. The event took place on the upper level of the restaurant, so the atmosphere was very familiar. The servers told us a little about each course, and we learned a lot of interesting facts about the wines from sommelier Péter Tüű, who apparently loves to tell stories. :) In any case, the restaurant is devoted to wines, which is clearly shown by the fact that there are 104 named vaults for rent in the cellar, where we can store our wines in perfect conditions. We tasted six dishes, all of them rich in flavor and inventive. The malted bread with wild boar rillettes was a strong start and the portion was quite large, followed by a wild salmon sashimi with burnt-marinated tomatoes and ponzu, a citrus sauce mainly used in Japanese cuisine. Peeled cherry tomatoes are an incredible taste, I would have loved to rehearse them :) I really like quail, but unfortunately my bird was a little undercooked, it was still pink on the bone, so it wasn't my favorite... The venison loin and wild boar cheek made up for it, the meat was super soft, juicy, crumbly and really rich in flavor in both courses, and I was also happy with the wild broccoli, which unfortunately is rarely used here, although I think it's a divine side dish. The cocoa-cherry-wild pepper dessert was the perfect end to this cozy evening, especially since we were served a 20-year-old port with a deep taste. By the way, the wines were excellent and they didn't skimp on them when our glasses were empty. My personal favorite was the French Clos Saint Jean, which I had never tasted before, which is a cuvée with a long finish, rich in tannins, in which I thought I could also detect coffee flavors - it was really delicious. I think we will enter the champagne evening as well, we had a great time.
Starry New Year
We had dinner at this restaurant on New Year's Eve, and it was truly a fantastic experience. Very attentive staff, excellent service, extremely varied and particular menu, with very few variations compared to the original for me as I am celiac, very vast cellar. It is a Michelin-rated restaurant but which had 1 star until recently, and in fact the whole dinner absolutely deserved the mention. We were also given a beautiful table near the window of the open kitchen. One of the best restaurants ever.
Worst Michelin restaurant experience
Really missed the mark. Food was ok, nothing special. Everything felt cold and distant. Wine paring was bad - 4 whites, 1 red and 1 port. I wish I had known the pairing was white heavy, really disappointing as I was excited to try some Hungarian reds. Disappointed that this place was recommended to me over others. There’s a reason no one was there on a Friday night.
Amazing evening in Budapest!
It's a shame i can't give more than 5 stars. This was absolutely top of the class dining in Budapest! The service, the food and the atmosphere was above and beyond! Laurel will be THE reason we're visiting Budapest again! Thanks for a unforgettable evening!
Huge disappointment
The restaurant and staff are pleasant. Regarding the tasting menu which includes eight dishes, the quantities are microscopic even in the context of a tasting menu, the products used are certainly of good quality, however they do not in themselves justify the prices charged. Indeed, these are not expensive basic products (cabbage, pig's ears, radishes, artichokes, etc.). One of the starters is notably composed of 2 dices (1.5 cm) of marinated vegetables and a quarter of marinated strawberry, the slice of bread and the smoked butter are counted as a starter, The main course consists of a tiny lamb chop . In the photo on the website two lamb chops are presented on the plate. Furthermore, there are quite a few marinated preparations and products served cold. If the quality is there, the quantity-price ratio is ridiculous. At more than 450 Swiss francs for three people with a bottle of wine at 30 Swiss francs, it's the scam of the year.
We reach a peak
In all honesty, the prices are stratospheric considering the quality of the products and their preparation. A tasting menu of 8 dishes, including 2 microscopic pieces of vegetable and 1/4 marinated strawberries, a slice of bread and butter counting as a dish (no more bread for the rest of the meal), a piece of pig's ear fries (this is more than enough). In short, an extremely disappointing experience and far from expectations for a starred restaurant. The staff is friendly and the restaurant is quite pleasant.
