Really Good Afghan Eats!
We reserved a table for a large group for a birthday celebrationโฆ Getting there early, we went to a downstairs bar, where itโs really cozy and much quieter than upstairs. (BTW, restrooms are also downstairs). Bartender was friendly and helpful and they offer a nice cocktail list, as well as make their cocktails really well. Dรฉcor it beautifully done as well. We sat upstairs for dinner, where it was not only very crowded and noisy, but each time guests entered the door, a huge gust of cold air blew in. Our server was great, very friendly and helpful, definitely knew the menu well, as well as the ingredients. All the items we ate (we ended up trying many things on the menu) were very tasty and enjoyable. Save room for dessert, their Hawla and the rice pudding are excellent! In all, it was a nice visit! Definitely recommend stopping in!
Be the first to ReplyVery good afghan food
Restaurant is really nice, love the atmosphere. I liked the food, although I canโt really compare it to any other afghan food since it was the first afghan meal Iโve had. The outdoor seating is very nice. Waiters are very friendly and attentive. Itโs rather expensive but it is worth itโs price.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food + Great service = Lovely brunch
Excellent food. Great service. Awesome hot beverage. Food - appetizers samplers. Got the best of everything. Shared between 2 people. Delicious. Everything had distinctive flavors. Rice dessert (cant rmbr the dish's name) was perfect balance of gluttonous rice and coconut cream. Had a sprinkle of but on top for texture. Drinks - ginger lemon tea and chai latte. Both hit the spot for two very cold patrons. Service - lovely waitress. I THINK the chef (lady) came to our table to greet and check up on us; great personal touch.

We dined here with reservations on a Monday night. The meal and service were both great and the ambiance made by the lighting and decor was delightful. The traditional meat dumplings were the star of the show but the eggplant dish and rice/lamb main were also delicious. I'd probably skip the rice pudding next time in lieu of another desert, it was a little heavy on the cardamon. Over very pleased!
Be the first to ReplyFabulous Afghan food, worth it
Lapis has been around for awhile, but the standards of food, service, and ambiance are still going strong. Dumplings are a favorite, as are the lamb biryani, and the eggplant and pumpkin dishes this meal were new to us and delicious. Fantastic evening out.

A small family-run Afghan restaurant with an interesting menu. Nice outside seating area. Great service. The lamp shank was fantastic. Nice soups, huge portions. We came here one. Ishtar and came back the very next night to try more of the menu. Note that they automatically add a 20% service charge, but they make sure you are aware of that when they give you the bill.

Went here with my sister and her husband, and we all loved Lapis, which was recommended by my nephew. We had a variety of small plates, and each was better than the last. The pumpkin dishes were particularly good, and I loved the lamb kabob. Can't wait to go back!
Be the first to ReplyExcelent food. Donโt miss
We had a wondeful experience having dinner at Lapis. The dumplings, the lamb, the chicken were simply excelent. If youโre in DC, donโt miss the opportunity to visit this gem and make sure to make a reservation.
Be the first to ReplyRich and flavorful
The food options were very diverse, and the vegetarian options were great. The veggie dumplings were moist and tasty and the flavors for the eggplant dish were rich and tasty. The cocktails were not as impressive but everything overall was very good.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, excellent service, wonderful meal
Our party of six thoroughly enjoyed dinner at Lapis. We were seated downstairs (which was admittedly a bit hard to navigate for an elderly member of our group). The interior is spare and somewhat dark, but with a cool vibe. As we wanted a bit more quiet, our server was able to pull a curtain to give us some additional privacy. Very nice. Our waiter was extremely attentive and helpful - re-filling water, bringing dishes, answering questions, offering suggestions. Excellent. Across the board, everything was delicious. As a large party, we ordered nearly half the menu. The list of greats is too long to list. Portions varied a bit, but we were satisfied. Wonderful celebration dinner. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, decent ambiance, high overheads cost
Always crowded, so reservation is a good idea. Ambiance is decent, nothing fancy. Whatever we ordered was tasty, and quantity was more than adequate. One thing that surprised us was that we paid 40% more as gratuity + service charge than the food we ordered. That's 'a bit steep' in my opinion. Plus the taxes, of course.

Stopped here on a whim. Had no idea what it was. Never had Afghan food before. It was FANTASTIC! Our server was above and beyond helpful, courteous and explained the menu to us. Made excellent recommendations
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced!
We went there to have lunch on a weekday earlier this month. We were the only customers in the room. Apart from the service that was OK, the rest does not make the bar. We were not very hungry and ordered a few starters to share. They came with no flat bread so we had to order nans that were cut in small pieces. The music was loud playing Latino tunes... We asked for a jug of water, it wasn't cold, right off the tap. And there is mandatory 20% charge for the tip on the bill! For what? What kind of business is this?

This is December of 2021 and we are in the middle of a dramatic increase in Covid infections thanks to the omicron variant, but, if you are cautious there are still ways to enjoy an excellent meal out. Fortunately I have a daughter who is thoroughly versed in interesting cuisines in DC and took us to Lapis. We arrived and were greeted by our host, who was patient and attentive, surely a challenge in these most difficult times. We were seated at a patio with a heat lamp keeping us comfortable. Our server was attentive and helpful and the food was absolutely delightful. I had the kale salad and the shrimp dumplings. The flavors were so engaging, so subtle. My companion enjoyed a cocktail. The dessert cake was moist and tasty. Yes, it is a difficult time but staying in makes it worse. Be safe, be careful, but try to enjoy your surroundings and when you do, make Lapis a part of the experience. (Full disclosure: I am not commenting on value; I did not pay.)

Called earlier in the day for table for two and weโre told just to come over between 7:30-8. We arrived at 7:45 and we had to wait a bit for a table. Anyway, server was great, restaurant is a bit tight but interesting. We experimented we foods we havenโt eaten before so hard to know if they were good / similar to local Afghani food. We did like everything we ordered. Would go back.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food and cocktails and great service
Really enjoyed the set menu and found myself extremely fat and happy by the end. Wine options are great and cocktails are really special. Enjoyed the ambiance.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, service lacking
The food was fantastic, but service was pitiful. We were a family of 5 with three teenagers, and we didnโt seem to be worthy of our server checking on us from the time she took our order to the time she delivered our check with the built-in 20% service charge. Our food was delivered by runners, no drink refills. Maybe this is more of a hip place for couples and friends? She seemed to be more attentive to other tables. Maybe she didnโt appreciate our southern accents? I was excited to try Afghan food with my family, and the food was delicious, but experience not so great after washing our food down with melted ice.

Very good special food, both vegetarian and non vegetarian. Nice IPA beer served, kind staff, public free parking around
Be the first to ReplySo glad this restaurant is in my neighborhood!
This restaurant is in my neighborhood and I've been there several times in the last few months. I'm so glad it's nearby. The food is delicious and the service is consistently great. Last night Sophia was our server and she was fantastic. Personable, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. I've enjoyed many things at this restaurant across the dumplings, vegetarian options and the meat options, and have not been disappointed by any of them. Also love the pistacchio cake for dessert. Would recommend if you're lookign for Afghan food or to try something a bit different.
Be the first to ReplyNo time to order dessert.
Lovely food, atmosphere, and service until the end when I expressed interest for dessert and the waiter said "You can but this table is reserved for someone else in 15 mins." Pretty much lost my appetite after that point.
Digital payment processing was a clumsy mess as well.
