Laos in Town Washington Reviews from The Last Year
If you love Northern/North-eastern Thai food, this place is the must!
Superb taste, authentic ingredients, highly recommended for anyone who craves for authentic Northern/North-eastern/Laotian cuisine. For dessert, I really love sticky rice and jackfruits; really sweet and tasty.
Mark the waiter should be the host!
We didn’t have reservations and tried our luck getting an outdoor table. Put our name down at 7 pm for 4 ppl (my husband, two sons, and me)… another larger group of 6 came after us and didn’t have reservations either. They were seated outside 30 mins later and we were still waiting. I asked the hostess (girl with very short hair) why this was and when can we expect a table outside (there were plenty of empty tables outside) and the hostess said she had already told me she couldn’t guarantee us a table and thought it would be better for me and my family to go somewhere else after we’d waited for almost an hour. Mark, the waiter that seated the group of 6, said not to worry and apologized. He led us to a table right next to the heaters and gave us the best service ever! Thank you, Mark! Food-wise, it’s very flavorful and portions and prices are fair. As a person from SEA, the spice level and some ingredients are not catered to us but to Caucasians. If you are not used to service charges, 20% is automatically added and that doesn’t count as tip.
Amazing food and service
My Tofu Northern Noodles were absolutely delicious, as was my fighting tiger cocktail. Cool atmosphere. And Dionn was a wonderful server!
Great food and nice people
The food is good, wok noodle and mango sticky rice, both rrally delicious. Silvia who served the food is really nice and polite. I recommend this cafeteria
First visit was great, second would have kept me from coming back
Let me start off by saying the staff is fantastic, especially Julia. Now to the food review…. I had come here one previous time while visiting DC and loved it. I happened to be visiting from out of state again so i decided to come by for dinner. Last time I had the Wok Noodle and it was fantastic. That is what made me come back. This trip I got the Northern Noodle. Had this been the first dish I had I would not have come back. The description for the dish was “steamed and crispy noodle, chicken, onion, pickled radishes, cilantro”. The dish is also noted as PHET which is supposed to mean spices. When the dish came out it was covered in so much curry it was basically a soup (please note that there was no mention of soup or curry in the description). The chicken was a single fried drum stick mostly sunken in to the “curry soup”. The only flavor you got was yellow curry and there was so much liquid it difficult to eat the fried drum stick (which was soggy due to the amount of liquid). I ate about 1/3 of the Northern Noodle soup and just could stand it anymore. Decided to order a slice of the good looking strawberry cheese cake I saw when going to my seat. Ugh, disappointment strikes again. While the cheese cake had flavor, the strawberry sauce on top tasted canned and had set up like it might have had a little gelatin in it. The cheese cake might have had gelatin too as the consistency was close to a no-bake jello cheese cake. Maybe I’m being harsh on the desert because of the huge disappointment of the main meal. Will I try Laos again, maybe if I lived near by. As a visitor from out of town I might (if staying near by), but not likely as there are so many other options in DC. Now I’m off to find a snack somewhere as I am leaving still hungry.
Service needs attention
Our server had little/no knowledge of the menu and couldn't answer basic questions to clarify what type of fish was served and further details of the chicken dishes. He showed no initiative to find out and come back to us. The starters arrived promptly, as did the main courses before we had finished the starters. The small table meant all the plates could not be accommodated and we had to hurriedly transfer the starters to our main course plates. The chicken curry was OK except that the aubergines were not sufficiently cooked. The Orm main course, marked as being spicy, was insipid with a watery sauce that lacked taste. The aubergines were also under cooked. On providing feedback the Orm main course was removed from the bill and our dissatisfaction conveyed to the chef and manager. I'm not sure if the server was new into the job but there is a strong case of some training being required to improve his knowledge and general attitude.
Laotian experience
We decided to try Laos in town for restaurant week. We went on a Saturday and managed to find on street parking a 5 minute walk away. The weather was super warm so we were glad that we booked seats inside however depending on the time of year the outside seating looked tempting. There was a great set of food choices, the restaurant week menu was $40 for three course but the restaurant also has a vegan menu and a standard menu, The costs was reasonable for the a la carte choices on the menu for a restaurant of its reputation. I would gladly go again and I recommend this as a fun venue to try Laotian food in a nice setting.

Ask a Question |
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue? |
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
