Discovered this place by accident and I can't wait to come back and try more items from their menu . Literally everything I had this night was amazing . The atmosphere was quiet enough to have an intimate conversation which was great and the staff was all very pleasant and attentive. If you're going here run don't walk !

Fantastic spot for a romantic or one with your grown-ass friends who want to sit, relax, enjoy, and eat food that's expensive but worth it. We were a group of 4 in a corner booth up front, and the evening was perfect. The staff is friendly, attentive, and kind. We had two different, serious allergies at our table and the waiter was knowledgeable and helpful. Somehow we managed to order a bunch of plates to share without incident! Given the allergies, I was impressed. The drinks / wine were great, and the food fantastic. Standouts were the Suckling Pig and the Pulpo de Roca. Would 100% return!

I love this place! Their ajo blanco is out of this world, and their twist on paella with the noodles was delicious. We'll be back!
Be the first to ReplyShort review: Pricey tapas.
One worth it (Hamachi special.) One wasn't (Morros Prensados.) Excellent dessert (Torrijas.) Excellent cocktail (Yacht Rock.)I went to this popular little Spanish tapas spot a little while back. The prices were quite high especially for one not good dish in particular but the flavors were solid. As they were crowded and I didn't have a reservation, I sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly. To drink I had the Yacht Rock for $15 which had Bourbon, Amaro Sfumato (by Hausal Penz likely,) Amontillado Sherry, and Bitters. The drink was comparably to the rest of the menu on the cheaper end. Nice mix of sweet and bitter definitely leaning towards bitter and I would likely go back and sample more of their cocktails which are mostly $15 or $16. They recommended I order two dishes for a lighter meal or three if I want to be full. The first dish that arrived was the specialty of the night, a Hamachi Crudo with Peppers, Almonds, Scallions, and Celery Oil I believe (there might have also been a sweet component like sliced grapes or something) and it was $23. This was very nicely presented with thin strips of fish with said mรฉlange of ingredients on top. The fish was of very high quality and it wasn't overpowered by any of the ingredients. I believe the pepper was a mix of Piquillo and something else (maybe Padron or Shishito.) This was tasty and mostly worth it for the price.I ordered the Morros Prensados which had a Seared Beef Jowl (aka beef cheeks) Terrine, Mustard-Grape Espaรฑola, and Mustard Greens Pistachio Salad and it was $21. By comparison to the other dish, this wasn't as worth it or as well balanced. There was a very thin piece of terrine on the bottom and while it was tasty with a good texture, it wasn't really worth it. The salad on top had too much mustard and sourness with the pistachios and grape not balancing it out and it was so comparatively big to the meat, it felt like a salad more than a beef appetizer. In terms of price comparisons to other fancier Spanish spots, there is a $15 version at Txikito which is mostly beef based which is so much of a better deal. I would have gotten the much praised Rossejat but I can't eat squid so I probably should have gone with the Cochinillo instead. I wouldn't recommend this.I went with the Torrijas for dessert. This consisted of Burnt Sugar Kouign-Amann, Sour Cream Ice Cream, and Huckleberry and it was $14 (with the other desserts on the menu being $12.) This was a very well-made dessert. The Kouign-Amann had a nice caramelized texture as expected being quite sweet with a couple more burnt pieces which I actually liked as they had a pleasant texture. The ice cream didn't taste of sour cream which I kind of don't mind and it had a pleasant sweetness. My only complaint perhaps is that there could have probably been more huckleberries. I have had torrijas from other spots with most of them having dulce de leche and berries but this was a nice take on the usual. It is rather hard to rate this spot. The special of the day, the dessert, and the cocktail were all very good and pretty worth it for the price. However the other dish was competitively really bad and on the main menu. If I had just gotten a cocktail, the morros, and the torrijas, I probably would give them a low 3 and wonder where are the good reviews are coming from. Mid 3 for now rounded up. I'll probably be back to try the cochinillo and to get a different dessert but I will wait a while because the prices are quite high.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent.
Everything from the food to the service to the vibe was great. The food is unique and top quality.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic food.
Very good bang for buck for a tapas spot. Everything we had was delicious (and had good amount across 4 ppl). Great service too. Highly recommend
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food! Every dish was great.
Seating and tables could use some updating, but overall high recommend!
Be the first to Replyconfit leeks, lobster risotto, cheesecake all excellent.
the white sangria pitcher also great !
Be the first to ReplyVery cozy atmosphere- makes a great date spot.
The drinks were all excellent. Highly recommend the pork jowls and rossejat 38. The tomato salad was also very simple but fresh and delicious. Would go back again to try more of the menu.
Be the first to ReplyFood was good but not the most memorable.
To start we had:* Shishito peppers-very good* Octopus- amazing and prob my favorite we had* Swordfish-good* Rossejat-Ok-a bit salty IMOTo drink I had Wild In The Streets- to sweet and was hoping for more of a smoky mezcal cocktail. Service was just ok which is why only 4 stars and not 5.

La Vara was hands down one of the best restaurants I've eaten at this year (and I go to a lot of restaurants). I was hesitant to book a res because of some less than flattering Yelp reviews, but took the risk as the restaurant is beautiful and I've always wanted to try it for a special occasion. It did not disappoint! We ordered the croquetas and huevos relleรฑos to start - both were delicious! They filled us up a bit before the courses started coming. We also ordered two glasses of white sangria, crisp and refreshing.Salchicha with artichokes were next, followed by the soft shell crab special which was also wonderful. The bakalao was the highlight of all of the courses, with flavorful and sweet pepper sauce. Fish was cooked perfectly. Definitely a must order. We finished with rossejat, which we also enjoyed. The service was excellent throughout, and the host even brought us two complementary glasses of cava as we had noted our anniversary on Resy. Such a nice gesture!!My only complaint is I wish the food had come a bit slower, as I would have stayed and savored the courses a bit longer. Thank you La Vara team for the excellent meal on our anniversary!

This is a pricey restaurant; but definitively neither the service, nor the food or the actual space justify these prices. I am afraid that in general I would not recommend this restaurant now. I'll explain:I came here a few years ago, and then I got a much better impression. It definitively has slid down since I first came here. 1. Service is not good. I made a reservation. When we arrived -just on time-, we were asked to wait (for 20 minutes, standing literally on the street) to get our table. We were seated at the patio, and there, at one point, there was hardly anyone taking care of the tables. I had to stand and walk to the interior to find someone to come with the desserts menu (after waiting for 15 minutes for someone to show up), the same to request the check... The service was incredibly slow. We order 6 dishes to share, and we had to wait more than 20 minutes between dishes. Our dinner got endless. Really not good.2. Food was sometimes good, but often not good at all. The cochinillo was good (not Candido's good, but still good), the torrija was actually very good. The bomba rice was good, but unclear if it was within the risotto or in the arroz caldoso traditions. However, the trufa croquetas were terribly flavorless (a very ordinary bechamel with New Jersey-synthesized trufa oil, and that's it). The huevos rellenos were not any better (a celebration of blender, with this acid paste made of ingredients that were impossible to identify). In general, this started as a research-based Sephardi restaurant, and seems to be now a not-good tapas bar. The menu is in a desperate need of being workshopped.3. Something needs to be said about silverware. You cannot charge an 80$/person check and expect customers to keep their silverware from fish to meat, and from appetizers to mains. That seems just cheap and careless about flavors, experience and decor. This is just sketchy. 4. Space. The layout is really not working. The space is too fragmented. There is not a proper place to nicely wait to be seated. The kitchen and bathroom are dividing the restaurant in sections that the waiters forget about. The bar occupies the best part and is unnecessarily huge and useless. The patio us too small to create a lively atmosphere and is too distant to the rest. An architect is needed here. Other establishments by the same owner have similar issues. I am thinking of Txikito. These people need much better design. In general. Overpriced for a rather messy service, food and space, and for a diluted identity. Definitively not at the level of similar restaurants like Ernesto's or Estela and quite as expensive if not more.

Amazing neighborhood restaurant with kind staff, delicious food and service. Every dish was perfectly cooked. Will be back to try the rest of the menu. Not pictured is the chocolate flan dessert. We ate it too fast.

We ate at La Vara for our last dinner in the city during our long weekend trip, and it was by far my favorite. La Vara is a Spanish restaurant with an emphasis on the Jewish and Moorish legacies in Spanish cuisine. We shared the pulpo de roca (Galician octopus carpaccio, citrus, olive oil), judias a la plancha (scorched flat beans, romesco, butter beans, and charred onion), bakalao (house-cured salt cod, pisto, pil pil sauce), rossejat (toasted fideos, shrimp, lobster, squid, and black pearl aioli), and xiocolata (whipped chocolate flan, olive oil, sea salt, brandied cream). Everything was great. The pulpo and the bakalao were my favorites - dishes I will definitely keep thinking about and dishes I would eat again today if I were at La Vara right now (the texture of that fish!?). The beverage menu was great as well - cocktails to wine to beer and sherries galore. I wish I'd had room for a flight of three sherries! I did have room for a delicious glass of Spanish wine. The restaurant is small but charming, warm, and comfortable, and it has a lovely outside eating area as well. The service was great. Overall, it was just an excellent evening, an excellent meal. I'd happily return to try more! We had a hard time choosing because I wanted to eat everything. And the food more than lived up to its menu descriptions. If you haven't been, run!

La Vara's menu that simply lists out the ingredients in its dish understates how delicious and creative their preparations are. I'm surprised the restaurant isn't more popular, and I'm slightly hesitant to write a review if not for my desire to reminisce all over again how good the food was.The dishes are in small plate format, so come with a friend or two to experience as much as possible. I had five different items and you couldn't go wrong with any of those.- pulpa de roca, Octopus: the octopus is sliced to translucency, dressed in an unctuous and fruity olive oil with a squeeze of citrus. This was probably my least favorite dish, but only because it was cold and the following dishes were warm and so much more delightful. No hate on the octopus though!- squid ribbons: now this one was incredible. Thinly sliced ribbons that have a slippery chewy noodle texture, but bathed in a creamy and savory pil pil sauce. The laborious knife work only meant extra surface area for the sauce.- iberico and artichoke: the iberico sausage is sliced thinly, all the better to show off it's depth of flavors without and overly chewy texture. But it came with deep fried artichokes and a delicious sauce that was really hard to stop eating. - swordfish eggplant: this is a warm spread that again has the wonderful slightly sweet char of eggplant accompanied by salty swordfish.- rossejat: the name is unfamiliar but it's a seafood paella. I thought it would be too heavy, but the noodles are thin and the dish is generous with its crab shrimp and mussels. I loved the crispy noodles on the cast iron dish! The small plates here are thoughtfully composed with multiple complex components. Each little plate is an adventure and an exploration in flavors - highly recommend! done food. Paella, squid, chorizo and artichoke wow

The Asian hostess is so rude! We showed up with a reservation and the way she greeted us and spoke to us with such hostility! Like who were we and how dare we arrive there?! we both looked at each other turned around and left! WHAT A BAD VIBEE
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Spanish restaurant in Cobble Hill.
Definitely make a reservation if you can. I tried:+ Madame meuze cocktail + Wild in the streets cocktail+ Paved paradise cocktail+ Yacht rock cocktail + Croquetas of the day+ Escalivada (fire roasted eggplant)+ Salchichon (iberico de bellota sausage)+ Pulpo de roca (octopus)+ Arroz meloso (buttery bomba rice)+ Sweet almond cake + Catalan style cheesecake My favorite cocktail was the madame meuze, and the standout dishes were the salchichon and arroz meloso. The sweet almond cake was the best dessert, though they were both really good. 4.5 stars.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a lovely restaurant but just a heads up to anyone
This is a lovely restaurant but just a heads up to anyone who makes a reservation on resy: the people at la vara don't read your special requests. I made a specific request to add a birthday candle if dessert was ordered. I specifically ordered two desserts to make sure one was candle-friendly. And guess what ? 1000 extra calories and $12 extra later, there was no candle ..so no birthday wish. I was so disappointed. Why even bother asking about the occasion or for a requests if they would be ignored? Really ruined my experience.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding food all around.
It comes out quick and the service is excellent. Wine pours are small, my only complaint. This is one of the finest restaurants in Brooklyn.

Boom. Loved it. My husband and I went here for our anniversary dinner. We wanted some place with creative food that wasn't super posh, and this place delivered. From our first plate (croquettes del dรญa) to our biggest main (cured duck breast with poached pears and a coffee vinegar sauce) to our dessert (almond cake with drunken cherries) we loved everything about this place.
Be the first to ReplyI understand when businesses required vaccination passports
I understand when businesses required vaccination passports to dine in back when it mandated; as they needed to to avoid fines and whatnot. But at this point they're just discriminating. I'm vaxxed and a NYC server/bartender for ten years and I can have and pass Covid just as easily as an unvaccinated guest. Won't give my patronage to self righteous Jim crows.
Be the first to ReplyI wanted to love this place, but it fell so short:+ordered
I wanted to love this place, but it fell so short:+ordered the lobster paella ($28) - not a single morsel of lobster, so we basically paid a steep price tag for a bowl of rice + mushrooms ย :(+bellota jamon +artichoke ($21) ย - jamon was sliced so thin you almost couldn't taste it+chocolate flan - this was just chocolate mouse with whipped cream. ย Nothing flanny about itAdditionally, the bathroom was disgusting. My husband let them know and I waited 30 min to give them time to clean, but when I got there, still gross. ย Nothing like having to hold your nose to wash your hands before a $250+ meal We enjoyed the squid ribbons/scallop and the beef jowl, and the staff was absolutely lovely, but the experience was so irritating and the food so hit or miss we won't be coming back
Be the first to ReplyFirst time outdoor with no cover dining experience.
..Went on a freezing day so dining in the cold was not fun but the food at La Vara really made up for it. I was pretty mind blown by the MEJILLIONES EN ESCABECHE (Maine mussels, carrot-bay vinaigrette, ย pimentรณn aioli) dish. It was literally the best dish I had of that week.Great spot for Spanish food (I believe the restaurant is a one-star Michelin spot) by Chef Alex Raij and Chef Eder Montero
Be the first to ReplySouthern Spain will receive a 3.
2 magnitude earthquake upon the realization that the distribution of flavors from the region are identical in a small candlelit Brooklyn eatery. While the menu certainly isn't for the faint hearted, La Vara takes your taste buds on a journey across a spectrum of consistency and uniqueness. I'd be remissed to not adamantly call out the duck breast and eel babagounesh, a daring fusion of ingredients that come together for a rare success of experimentation.Bring a friend, bring a date, bring an individual that has an appreciation for the unexpected, because if there's one thing you can be sure of at La Vara, it's that there's no room for the imaginable.
