My favorite restaurant in LA.
The food is as special as the chef herself. I want to visit more often because the pandemic did a number on her business, but my wallet says otherwise. That said, I will always come back on special occasions!
Be the first to ReplyMost underrated restaurant in LA.
The menu is always changing so, if you can afford it, you can go monthly. It's good it's not packed with hip foodies but I want this place to be recognized as every bit as good as N Naka or Hayato.

I don't say this lightly but this might be the best meal I've had in LA. Every course was so flavorful. The crab and the smoky abalone were real highlights. The sake/wine pairings were generous and perfectly matched each dish. We'll almost certainly be back
Be the first to ReplyChef Nan blew us away again.
Back after 2 years and the food did not disappoint. The food was so flavorful. Service was so attentive. The chef was so engaging and the staff extremely knowledgeable. My stomach is happy and full.
Be the first to ReplyFamiliar dishes, yet somehow delightfully reinvented.
At first glance, you might see the list of traditional Thai dishes on the menu, but you'll quickly discover that each has some sort of spin to it. Hard to describe, like an unexpected ingredient here or there, or a different way to prepare a salad. My boyfriend and I enjoyed their take of the beef stew and Tom yum. The soft shell crab was delicious in every bite. The waiter shared with us how each ingredient was carefully picked, and we truly appreciate how fresh all the dishes tasted. I think the dishes are unique here, and you wouldn't find something comparable in other LA establishments. The entrance is very unassuming, easily missed on Vigil street. But don't miss coming to KinKan. It's worth it!

The chef is wonderful, creative and playful. She takes you on a tour of her favorite spots with plays on Japanese and Thai foods fused with influences from her experiences in Mexico, the UK and Spain. Absolute delight.

This was a really special experience! My husband and I had the smaller tasting menu (which was actually extremely filling) which was compromised of 4 savory dishes + dessert from around the world (but each with some thai influence.) My favorite was the starting chirashi bowl where each component was perfect and tender. The chef is super friendly and chatted with us through the meal, and even the smallest details are well thought out (like the music matched where each dish was from, geographically.) I'm eager to go back and taste the bigger tasting menu at some point!
Be the first to ReplyIncredible, creative and beautiful food and a really fun
Incredible, creative and beautiful food and a really fun time rarely go together, but with chef Nan Yimcharoen you get both! Sit at the chef's counter to have the chance to hang with the most laid back, friendly and FUN serious chef who is clearly having a great time herself. The food is delicious and each dish is visually gorgeous on equally attractive plates. The curated playlist to go along with each course adds to the festive atmosphere that makes every diner feel like they are at a party. Nothing stuffy here. We can't wait to go back again!
Be the first to ReplyI've only had a few food-gasms - this was one.
One of my 3 top dining experiences in Los Angeles. It's a delightful and heady experience, without being pretentious, as the prix-fix menu worked its way down south Asia. I won't pretend to critique each dish, but say there was not one dish that didn't present something new and delectable. At several courses, it was also very satisfying. Nan was such an approachable host, and the staff clearly enjoys sharing the experience with diners. Expensive, but worth it.
Be the first to ReplyOnsen tamago: pretty good, big piece of uni, egg cooked
Onsen tamago: pretty good, big piece of uni, egg cooked nicely, broth was very flavorful and the leeks added nice texture contrast Crab shumai: interesting concept, but it kind of felt like they just jammed as much seafood as they could into the wrapper; lacking finesse. I respect the amount of seafood given though. Flavor was a big one dimensional Crab legs: pretty much standard crab legs; some of them were a little too flaky/would break apart easily; would rather have whole pieces of leg. Corn accompaniment was kind of random Lazy bear crab curry: despite the cute presentation, it was surprisingly delicious. Curry flavor was really prominent but not overpowering the crab, rice was not mush, and they gave lots of crab. Crab carbonara: cool presentation using the head of the crab; another big piece of uni and nice utilization of all the crab using crab innards to build the sauce Crab tom yum shabu shabu: nice flavor, not too strong, wontons were decent, crab was nice. Honey ice cream: nice texture contrast with puffed rice and crab cracker was pretty coola
Be the first to ReplyKinKan is creatively heightening thai cuisine to the next
KinKan is creatively heightening thai cuisine to the next level while in every bite the core and heart of #thai flavors remain . Chef Nan behind Kinkan is not only an amazing chef and curator behind delicious thailand bites but a very loveable and endearing host that made my Thai & Japanese Omakase experience delightful and welcoming . It's the vibe and atmosphere she has created for her guests and staff. You can feel it is genuine and heartfelt . I have followed KinKan and admired via IG and Yelp for way too long and to finally try it, everything I ate lived up to every expectation and standard I had. This was a birthday gift from my sister and I am really happy I was able share this tasty dinner with her. By the way, we are both Thai Americans and approve Kinkan!!Chef Nan along with Chef Paul served us familiar Thai flavors in an inventive way. As a Thai American who has eaten home cooked meals at home and from our relatives in Thailand countless times, our KinKan food journey surprised and shocked our taste buds all at the same time with all sorts of textures and with thoughts of... wait a minute, is that what I think it is but it can't be but it is. Wow! What? Soooo good. I have never in my life tried nam jim seafood soaked ikura , tom kha ceviche , sai oua A5 wagyu tartare to name a few. Every dish served was so beautiful and lovely. I recommend sitting at the counter for the full Chef Nan experience. Tons of bonus points, KinKan provides a light that you can turn off and on so you can take the best food pics. Overall KinKan creativity and thoughtfulness was making my Thai American foodie heart just explode with happiness and delight . To me, It's worth the price and horrible parking. Makes a reservation. What does KinKan mean in Thai? Eating Together!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing service at the counter where is chef? Nan speaks to
Amazing service at the counter where is chef? Nan speaks to you about the dishes. All the dishes were tasty, and I felt that I had more than enough to fill myself just right nondescript entrance. The inside is cozy, but unusual Christmas lights hanging from the ceiling definitely would recommend another round.
Be the first to ReplySorry, all.
As lovely as the staff at KinKan is, and as warm as the space aspires to be--and as caught up in momentary delusions as some of the reviewers on here seem to be--KinKan was a disaster from a culinary perspective, at least on the night we went (a Thai prix fixe). In essence, beneath their presentation, which often strained badly to look artful, the twelve or so dishes--a few spoons of food a piece--captured pretty basic Thai flavors (Here's the lemongrass dish! Here's chili! Here's coconut curry!) that you could find blocks away in Thai town with more flair and at 1/10th the price. The shtick seemed to be a) the aforementioned presentation (yawn), and b) using fine ingredients, the particularities of which were just buried under whatever basic flavor was dominating the dish. Frankly, it felt like precocious youthful chefs, in admittedly good faith, thinking they were helping you "discover" Thai flavors that are in fact pretty common just about everywhere, not doing a great job at it, but also making wealthy patrons feel comfortable and proud by dressing those flavors up in fancy and fashionable threads. And yes, you will leave very hungry, and wondering why this parade of middling Thai appetizers set you back two hundred dollars a pop. One hopes the Japanese nights here are better. But a lot of work left if this place wants to survive.

Beautiful presentation. Wonderful service. Very nice paired Sake. Worthy of a Michelin star!

This was by far the best dining experience I've had in LA, and probably the US. Wow. Chef Nan is the most special person, and the food is INCREDIBLE. Every dish was unique and special. I am truly blown away and it was the most fulfilling meal I've had in years. She deserves every accolade. The worst part was parking - come early to snag a spot in their lot or get a street spot. Nan, never change!

Kinkan never disappoints!! I went to her when she was still having dinners at her home and had ordered bentos boxes during the pandemic. Was so happy to finally get a chance to make it to her brick and mortar. I had the crab tasting menu and boy was it amazing!!! Every dish literally got better and better! I seriously cannot wait to get a chance to dine there again!!
Be the first to ReplyInteresting experience at KinKan, enjoyed on a food tour
Interesting experience at KinKan, enjoyed on a food tour around Thailand through the Sun Moon Shine Menu. The dishes were good but honestly not memorable. I understand that it's a Thai Inspired Omakase menu, but the portions were way too small. For the main courses, there were only 2-3 tablespoons of rice paired with the dish. I normally leave omakase's feeling extremely satisfied and full, but this 13-course menu still left me hungry as we left the restaurant. I personally did not think the service deserves a mandatory 20% gratuity. Wait times were long for certain dishes which I had not experienced at other omakase spots. Server's also seemed disorganized as to how to pace the menu being served.Although the restaurant is beautifully decorated, I don't think the menu is worth $150 per person.

We weren't really sure what to expect from their "A la carte before dark" menu, but was pleasantly surprised by the variety there. I was also a little apprehensive since they seem to do primarily omakase meals, and we have 3 young children. Well I shouldn't have worried as everyone was exceptionally friendly, and we all felt very welcome. We should have taken a picture of the menu but there were things like a chirashi bowl, wagyu bowl, tempura, pork stew, tuna carpaccio, sashimi plate and other tasty items. The food was both beautiful and tasty, and it was fun to taste the mixing of Japanese and Thai cuisines! The whole meal was fantastic and we'll definitely be back again (hopefully for an omakase meal when the kids get older too).
Be the first to ReplyBest meal of 2022.
Chef Nan is magnanimous! Amazing staff and outstanding food. The entire tasting menu was beautifully crafted and blends together in perfect harmony. Chef Nan's "bus tour" of the cuisine of Thailand demands the highest praise. I wanted more of every dish and found myself wanting to lick my plate. I recommend sitting at the chefs counter to fully experience Chef Nan's creations. Her explanations and why behind every dish made me think of my own childhood and life experiences .The meal would only be half the adventure without Chef Nan driving the bus.

The ambience is calming, inviting, and I loved the dishes they chose for each plate. There is 13 courses. Although on tock it said 14 courses. I found most of the dishes delicious. They were all the same tapas size. You could eat each tapa in 2-3 bites. Even the items I think could be made a tad bit bigger without truly increasing the price of the course are just so small. For example the Basil shrimp... its 2 shrimp and maybe 2-3 tablespoons of white rice that is colored blue (naturally, don't worry). After 13 courses you are maybe 2/3rd full and I am not a heavy eater. I also feel like for the gourmet experience aspect, the dishes were enjoyable although could have been more interesting. Tasting course is $150, around $11 per tapa.My other issue is the service. It's an automatic 20% gratuity. Which I feel like, isn't appropriate considering LA county does not make server wages compared to other states. Plus gratuity is up to the patron not the establishment. This should be rephrased "fee" not gratuity. But this wouldn't be an issue if the service was consistent. The wait staff switch throughout the course and one staff member just wasn't great at explaining the items. At the end, with the ice cream I'm not sure why chocolate ice cream was a showcase of thai cuisine but that's all they said. I felt like you had to ask questions in order to get an explanation rather than an expectation of service. The last minor issue depending on the patron but we arrived at 7:30p however the dinner didn't start until 8p. Service didn't finally end until 10:15p. Considering it is a set menu, we were surprised at the time it took to start eating. 7:30p seems excessive to be there that early if the food doesn't start until 8p.

Made a Christmas night reservation, pre-paid, and was expensive. Arrived at our reservation time and were told it would be at least an hour before we could be seated. Won't go back. Lastly, their corkage is $50, which is crazy for a place with no ambiance that can't seat you....
