Star on West Chicago Avenue
We were just introduced to this gem and learned that it has been around for some time. The sushi and other dishes were delicious and the service from Brian was wonderful. Brian was able to describe, in detail, exactly what we were ordering and made some very good recommendations. The premises are casual and not very large so getting a reservation requires some patience. Beer, wine and sake are offered. Prices for this wonderful food are moderate. Wish they acquired a full bar license.

One of the best restaurants I have been to so far. We were trying to get a reservation for some time. Luckily we got one for last night. We tried the 10-course Omakase. This is one of the best experiences we had. For $75 each person this is definitely value for money. The Fiesta Maki was okay, all other dishes was outstanding. We also tried the Mango Mochi which was so delicious ( not part of the Omakase. I am already planning when go back.
Not the best place for vegetarians btw. Some dishes can be modified to cater to vegetarians guests. I don't eat pork, so they changed the Char Sui to scallop skewers for me. But my partner said said the Char sui is one of the best one he had!
Oh my, OMAKASE!
If you do not like sushi, move on. If however, you think you like it, are thinking about trying it or just plain love it, I have a place for all y'all. KAI ZAN. We had 5pm reservation and the place was already hopping. The greeting was friendly a we were seated immediately in a tall private booth that could seat 6. Our server, Daniel, was warm, friendly, informative and patient. I had never had OMAKASE before, so decided to explore after Daniels' clear and tempting explanation. Essentially it's a taste of the Chiefs best dishes! It was 10 different items, some 1 bites, cup of soup, quail egg and shrimp shooters, white tuna, buttery melt in your mouth salmon and so much MORE. The meal was well paced and each item was explained by Daniel, there was also a print out in case you are too busy eating to listen, guilty! If this sounds like something you would enjoy, I know you WILL! Take a friend or two or 3, allow a couple of hours and FEAST!

First visit of 2020 and since last summer... Consistently high quality as always. Had the New Omakase menu which was 9 courses of various traditional and non traditional items.

My daughter and son-in-law took me to dinner here for my birthday. I love sushi and always willing to try new tastes. The food is amazing. Everything we ate tasted fabulous. Highly recommend visiting if you are a sushi aficionado.

If you blink driving down Chicago Avenue, you may miss this haven of culinary luxury, but once inside you will be transported to a restaurant that feels far away from the West Town neighborhood. Linda and I had the pleasure of dining at Kai Zan for the first time and enjoyed a spectacular meal that filled our tastebuds with repeated surprises from beautiful works of art created specifically for the mouth. If you are looking for special occasion place or seeking a fantastic dining experience, Kai Zan is by far the best choice. If youโre lucky enough to have Justyn as your server, you will enjoy this delicious dining experience all the more.
Be the first to ReplyNever disappointing!
There aren't many words I can say that would do justice to Kai Zan's Pre Fixe dinner menu. It is 7 courses (if I'm not mistaken), delicious, incredibly versatile and at a great price compared to Chicago restaurants ($70 pp).
Be sure to reserve a table in advance, the restaurant is small and fills up very quickly, but in case you haven't secured a table, you can always sign up to the wait list!
If you like Japanese food (not just sushi), this place is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Indescribable Sushi Heaven
Ok, I really dislike it when people rate everything with 5 stars, but this restaurant was spectacular! They have a tasting menu which we heard was outstanding, but we didnโt think we could eat 10
courses, so we opted for a-la-cart and followed the suggestions from our server. The tables didnโt have soy sauce immediately available so when the first dish arrived, we thought weโd give it a try without. We were blown away by the delicious flavour combinations and the beautiful presentations, and for the rest of the evening soy sauce was completely unnecessary. Trust the service staff! Theyโre brilliant and the sushi is very possibly the best youโll ever have!
***MUST VISIT****
Wow . My wife and I have had sushi at many really good sushi restaurants , this is without question the best. Amazing service, amazing food. The tasting menu is very good with a nice variety of dishes. Try the pearl appetizers, and check out a daily special. Brian was our waiter, impeccable service.

The food is very good because I have been to Kai Zan before. However, when I recently made a reservation to return with friends, I had a very unusual experience. When the restaurant called to confirm my reservation for four (the day before the planned meal), I was informed it is the restaurantโs policy that parties of four must vacate tables in two hours. I think that is pretty obnoxious. There are very few weekend dinners that are wrapped up in under 2 hours. God forbid we enjoy a cocktail or two and go to 2 and 1/2! There are plenty of excellent restaurants in Chicago. I will not be returning here because I enjoying dining more than EATING!

Excellent sushi! I have had a lot of great sushi all over the world and this place definitely stacks up to the best! Did the Omakase and it was the perfect choice! Would definitely recommend.
