Lovely family run business with authentic Afghani cultural
Lovely family run business with authentic Afghani cultural motifs. Good prices, excellent food, pleasant staff with positive and warm customer service skills. Only caveat: if you like beef medium rare, ask for rare and juicy. If you like medium ask for rare. They cook the meat one level more well done. Great place for a first dinner date!
Be the first to ReplyI liked the interior and the food itself.
A good place to eat delicious food and discover the national food of the East. A large hall with high ceilings, stylized atmosphere is harmonious and pleasant. The staff is kind and helpful.

What a lovely oasis, located in a strip mall in San Carlos off El Camino. You can see special care has been taken to create a beautiful atmosphere, arranged with exquisite Afghan decor. Instrumental Sufi music sets the mood. The dining room is large enough to accommodate events, yet there's a homey, cozy feeling that pervades the space, emanating from the warmth of the owners and the staff. Hot chai, creamy and sweet, was perfect on a cold windy day. I loved that refills were abundant. Koobideh kabob was juicy and flavorful. One skewer is an enormous portion, fit for a king. It comes with roasted tomato, rice, and a tangy green herb hot sauce. Pumpkin, eggplant, spinach in the vegetable combo plate were all delectable. The waitresses were so sweet and cool. San Carlos is lucky to have an awesome Afghan restaurant like this!

Went here for lunch on a Wednesday and it is still a great restaurant! Food is outstanding. Had the kabob combo with 2 lamb skewers. They do a wonderful job with flavor and tenderness. Not a better place for lamb at a very reasonable price during lunch. Upgraded the rice to the one with raisins and carrots (Quabili rice?). Also had the Sabsi Challaw ( lamb stewed in seasoned spinach) which had a wonderful taste as well. Finally, we had a side of the Kadu ( a sauteed pumpkin dish). It was very memorable and will be a new staple for us here. Can't say more about how much we enjoy the food and service here.

This review is for a take out, which we know may not reflect the in-dining experience. That said, it was disappointing. Meats were all overcooked -- lamb, beef and chicken were all dry or tough, the portions seemed small, but importantly the flavors were pretty average.
Be the first to ReplyBeen coming here on and off for literally decades.
Had take out at the weekend for a birthday celebration. As usual: excellent, tasty food and well worth the price!
Be the first to ReplyI cannot believe, it took me so long to come back.
Tonight we just happen to be in the area, hungry and I remembered Kabul Afghan cuisine. Luckily, the place wasn't too packed and there was a table for two in a quiet secluded corner, perfection. As soon as we sat down we were greeted by the servers and felt so welcomed. One thing I must emphasize, people here will treat you like family and you will feel the warmth, that you won't feel at most restaurants. It may be a white tablecloth restaurant, but you'll feel like you're eating at a friends home. From the appetizers to the main entrées, everything was delicious and the staff was super attentive. All I could remember was my rack of lamb, man was it delicious! Those little lambs were perfectly seasoned, so tender, perfectly seasoned and they were accompanied with the delicious rice and the bread. The bread, man do I love their bread... I highly suggest to get the meat cooked the way they serve it. It is right in between a medium/medium rare and it does not disappoint. Don't get me wrong if you want to cook a little longer they will accommodate you. If you are into kebabs this place is a must come. They have beef, chicken and lamb kebabs, that will blow your mind. Also, don't let the location fool you. Yes it may be a shopping center, but when you enter, you will be transported to a different place. Before we left the restaurant we were already making plans to come back! Thank you guys for the great experience, warm welcome and delicious food.
Be the first to ReplyI always get the lamb combo kabobs, they are my favorite.
I also like the fried eggplant with yogurt appetizer. The staff is friendly and the restaurant is large enough for a nice size group of people.
Be the first to ReplyIncredibly consistent delicious food.
If you like their food, you can be rest assured the food is the same quality next time. We have been going for over 20 years. Our go-to place when friends visit from out of town and each time they raved about it. My favorite is the pumpkin with the meat sauce, a good choice for vegetarians because it can be ordered with just yogurt sauce. This family enjoys lamb and every lamb dish is awesome. The portions are generous so if you don't need to pig out, you can share a dish with someone or have plenty of leftover for the next day.

I hosted a work event at Kabul and it was perfect! I always had great food there, and this event was no exception. The restaurant is quite enough for good conversation but still has a lively atmosphere. Micheal was amazing and set up a big family style meal for our large party.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, always accommodating.
My in-laws have been going there for decades.Staff there are wonderful!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food.
Excellent service. Long time business. Long time customer. I love each eggplant dish. My husband loves the vegetarian options.

I soooo miss it now that we moved out of the area. I would fly in just for my last meal there. Exceptional. Period.

We wanted try something new and this place had been bookmarked in my collections for sometime. Easy to find parking since it's located in a strip mall so there's a lot. It's a nice sit down restaurant with table cloth. You can dress up or be casual. Most of the waiters and waitresses were welcoming. Only one older waiter seemed unhappy and impatient. We felt rushed to order because he kept asking if we were ready to place our order. The rest of the waitstaff were pleasant. We started off with an appetizer that was like a pastry filled with eggplant and ground lamb with yogurt. That was really flavorful! Then we had our entrees; both of us had kabobs with rice. I haven't had lamb in a long while, so I tried their lamb kabobs. To my surprise, mine were large chunks of tender lamb done perfectly at medium rare! And each table has a bowl of green chutney which we liberally used to spice up our meal. The bread looked like focaccia bread but it was more soft and chewy in texture. My bf had the combo kabobs which was good too. Though I think the beef was a bit more cooked than we would have liked, but still good. Chicken was tender and juicy. For dessert, we decided to try Firnee (milk cardamom rose water almond pudding with pistachios and cinnamon). Maybe I'm used to Asian desserts but this was a bit sweeter for me. Still it was nice to try. Everything we had was delicious and memorable. Prices are reasonable and they give generous portions. Look forward to coming again in the future!
Be the first to ReplyTonight was my first night trying this restaurant in person
Tonight was my first night trying this restaurant in person after enjoying their food at various parties I've been to, that have been catered by Kabul. I drove all the way from Stockton to try this restaurant. The environment is so warm, loving, and welcoming. The family at Kabul truly makes you feel like you're at home in a very elegant way. Dishes I would recommend : Chicken, Shrimp, Salmon, Pumpkin with lamb meat sauce and yogurt, rice, and top it off with baklava and ice cream with a nice warm glass of tea. I have to emphasize the Pumpkin dish, because it is just to die for! It was seriously an amazing experience and I cannot wait to come back. 10/10 HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I love coming to Kabul! The meat is so tender and flavorful! The staff is friendly. You feel like you're in Afghanistan and apart of the beautiful culture. Mechelle, the daughter of the owner, is so wonderful! She talks to all the guest and makes delicious suggestions. Try the baklava with ice cream!

The Ambience and low lighting is everything!!!!!!
Be the first to ReplyDo not often go out to dinner because prices everywhere
Do not often go out to dinner because prices everywhere have gone up but Kabul is worth it. Start with Sambosa-E- Gousti (fried pastries with ground lamb and chickpeas) make sure to ask for yogurt sauce. I had the Lawang (chicken breast pieces in a creamy reddish sauce with mix of mushroom, onion, cilantro and garlic) with challaw rice. Hubby had Aushak under the appetizer section. It's spring onion filled steam dumplings topped with yogurt and lamb meat sauce sprinkled with mint. Delish! Staff was so happy to see us again. Businesses are struggling, please support your favorite restaurants.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing vegetarian dishes! Family friendly, kind service.
Good for eating in or take out

Highly authentic items on the menu, the bread is amazing
Be the first to ReplyKabul used to be one of my favorite restaurants, reasonably
Kabul used to be one of my favorite restaurants, reasonably priced and consistently great Afghani food. I've been coming here for something like 15 years. I haven't visited in the last 2 years, or any other indoor dining, due to Covid. Our first visit back was about 2 weeks ago, and we were quite disappointed. The Aushak (pasta triangles), were very hard to chew. The pasta has sometimes been a little undercooked, but this time it was very undercooked. Then onto the main course. The vegetable sides were great as usual, however the rice palau was cold as noted in other reviews. Perhaps because we came for a late lunch? What really disappointed us were the main lamb kabobs. They had the charbroiled taste, but didn't seem to have been marinated in the spicy yogurt sauce. Maybe that's why they weren't tasty and tender? All in all, I've lost my enthusiasm to return. I wonder if there is a new owner.

First time eating Afghan cuisine and we were left speechless! It was all so delicious! Mechelle and their staff being so attentive to us was cherry on top! Definitely coming back here :)

I love the food here and the service is generally good as well, but I really dislike the yelling. The owner yells orders at the waiters from across the room, "table five needs water". First, it's very unprofessional and second, it turns what should be a fine dining experience into a fast food environment. Lastly, we got there at 1:15 for lunch and by 1:50 the owner was yelling "last call", we ate fast and felt like we were getting the bums rush. We drive from South San Jose to eat here, hope it improves.
