The ambiance here is nice albeit a bit stuffy (it feels a little like the Upper East Side) but the service was unfriendly and somewhat shocking for a restaurant with these prices. One of the items on the menu was the butternut squash soup, and is sometimes made with chicken stock. I had asked the waiter about what stock was used and whether it was a vegetable or meat stock, and he said "Well, it's butternut squash soup. It's made with butternut squash." I then pushed back and said "Can you please find out for me from the kitchen what kind of stock you use since I'm vegetarian? " and he rudely retorted "It's butternut squash soup. It has butternut squash in it. Why would it have meat?" And I asked again "Can you please find out what stock is used?" And he rolled his eyes and walked away. I was appalled. It dampened mine and my friend's mood because I've never been treated so rudely at a restaurant of this caliber. I've had some bad service experiences at take-out places, but this is a standard question. Most places go through the effort of labeling items as vegetarian or not, but to not understand how a soup is made and that chicken stock is indeed used in butternut squash soup is absurd. When I've been to places like Fresh & Co that are super casual or low-key Chinese restaurant they are even able to answer the question if the soup is not labeled in terms of what stock is in it. So I ordered the beets instead along with the gnocchi since my question was never answered and I was made to feel guilty for asking the question. Both itemswere ok, and the drink was fine, but this really soured my impression of the restaurant. I will never be back and I hope this place shuts down for treating customers the way I was treated. I don't think anyone should be treated that way when they ask about whether an ingredient is in a dish / it is safe for them to eat.
