Can't believe i have lived in this area so many years and never been to iron gateIt feels cozy and tucked away Nice ambience. It has high ceilings and a medieval chateau vibe without being tacky. Space is small like narrow bar.Drinks were great. I ordered the pandora. They also serve it to you in a box for pandora's box. I was a tool and made the bartender re-open the box so i could video it. Another person that ordered it after me did same thing so it is what it isI think the drinks here are creative or a little more surprising than other places--not referring to the pandora's box thing--just talking about taste of the cocktails. There is a gin drink that has filtered yogurt in it which to me is very different.Bartenders are attentive and professional. They keep water glasses full which i really appreciate.Had just come from dinner but food menu looked good. Will come back to try it!
Be the first to ReplyI felt like a Princess.
The bathroom was so cozy I started crying on the toilet (don't worry about crying when you go, I am quite often overcome by emotion for no reason [actually my period starts tomorrow]). One of the food runners seemed really intent on getting the secret service agents next to us to show him their guns, which was a little weird. I'm excited to eat the entire pan of focaccia that I didn't eat tonight tomorrow (does that make sense?).

Absolutely one of the best experiences I've had in DC - I wish I got more pictures! I recently got to visit iron Gate on a work trip and the ambiance is cozy, warm and really unique. Most of their seating is outside but there are fire places, heaters and blankets all around. The tables are iron and there the decor is minimal but really nicely done. In terms of food we did the chefs tasting menu which our entire table had to get and it was 100% worth it. The dishes just kept coming so none of us left hungry. We started with some hummus and crudite and got to try various veggie dishes, pasta dishes and finished with the most delicious and rich short rib that I've ever had! The service was amazing! They accommodated our dietary restrictions and explained the menu really well. Overall, I'm already planning my trip back!
Be the first to ReplyI can't wait to come back and try more of the menu.
From the ambiance to the service this place is a must try. Outdoor seating in winter can seem scary but not when each table has a handy open fire next to it. We even took off our jackets we were so warm. The menu pairs comfortable classics with an exciting twist and includes unique finds. My Roasted Maple Squash was incredible. I'm only sad I didn't try more menu items. Looking forward to returning soon!

I went to Iron Gate for the first time on a double date to celebrate some birthdays and had the best time! Robert was our server and he was incredibly helpful and patient in accommodating a dairy free adjustment for my incredibly lactose intolerant self. The whole staff was so kind, welcoming, and warm! The food was absolutely delicious, the portions were so generous, and the whole table left feeling super satisfied. Thankful for the super fun time with some of the best service I've had! Thank you! :*)

We had some friends visiting a few weekends ago and they really wanted to try this place so we made a Saturday night reservation. I hate to say it, but for us, it didn't live up to all the reviews.First, let me say that the ambiance is great . I love the outdoor garden vibes and that every table has a fire pit. Our server was also nice and tentative. To start, we got cocktails. I got the alpine, which I enjoyed. We all thought the cocktails were real good. For dinner, I got the octopus, two of my friends got the duck, and another got the gnocchi. For the prices, everything was extremely small. The octopus was literally one tiny tentacle sitting on a bed of small salad. It was good but such a tiny portion for the price. The gnocchi was also just okay. We all tried it and didn't really understand the hype. It was simply average. The duck was good but again, an extremely small portion. Honestly, everything was just fine. We weren't blown away as we expected, and for the price, we definitely expected more. Maybe a la carte is not the way to go here. We found ourselves not very full by the end. The ambiance is great and the drinks were good but we expected more from the food.

We checked out Iron Gate during winter 2023 restaurant week .They have a small indoor bar seating area, but most of the tables were outside in the backyard (which has very cute decor and brick walls). You get the full appetizer spread (which included onions, citrus salad, hummus, carrots, mushroom arancini, smoked deviled eggs, and cheesy focaccia) and your team up to pick one entrée and one dessert for two people. We picked the oak grilled lamb kebab for the entrée, which also came with a side, salad and 4 pieces of bread. The meat has a lot of spices at the base (which is a bean stew) is kind of bland in comparison. The olive oil torta was delicious! It has a tinge of olive oil and the bread was very moist! The sweetness came mostly from the pineapple chunks on the side. You won't feel sugar overloaded. Iron gate has Mediterranean elements in their dishes but it doesn't feel like your classic Mediterranean cuisine. Overall, the winter restaurant week menu was a good deal for $55 and the restaurant has good vibes. I would recommend it for a date night! Reservations through OpenTable.

Amazing ambience and great staff, really romantic vibes and love the fireplace.Missing a star because they didn't have a lot of veggie options when I went, but they made me a great pasta when I requested!! Amazing wine

An absolutely beautiful place for a nice dinner with a loved one. My wife and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary here, on our tour of the East Coast, and we were treated with so much love from everyone! The ambiance is incredible and even though the seating is mostly outdoors, the table side fire pits make it feel cozy and warm. The food was amazing as well! You can do the family table option and get a little taste of everything they have. The overall experience, service, and food made our night that much more special.

I made reservations online and could only reserve outdoor seating. It was the middle of December but it looked like they had heaters so I was down to still try. I got there and I was the only one out there on the patio. They had heaters and gave me a blanket but I was still cold. The ambiance outside was lovely but it was just too cold. My friend came and she noticed that they did have indoor seating so we asked if we could move inside and they did. I wish they would have offered that in the beginning when I was freezing to death, but when I asked one of the staff said no seating inside. Oh well. The food itself was just okay. Nothing special. I didn't even finish it. Would I go back no.
Be the first to ReplyWooooow I was absolutely blown away by so many details
Wooooow I was absolutely blown away by so many details about this place. This is probably my favorite restaurant in DC after an incredible brunch yesterday. First, I love that this is located in such a charming, quiet neighborhood. We had made a reservation to sit outside, and my goodness, it was beautiful. I loved that the tables had fires going as well as the string lights overhead (I'm sure it's beautiful at night). The service was outstanding--John took care of us and gave us battery operated seat warmers (ingenious invention) since it was a little cold outside. We enjoyed every dish, and the mimosas here have generous pours!- Jill's Hot Cross Buns (5/5) Jill is definitely a very talented pastry chef! The bread had a great texture and the candied orange was delicious. - Two Olive Oil Fried Eggs (5/5) My favorite dish (minus the salad which was too salty in my opinion). The pesto with the eggs was phenomenal, and the crispy potatoes were perfect. - Caramelized Ricotta Gnocchi (5/5) I really enjoyed this dish as well, and I thought the portion size was really good. - Lemon Ricotta Pancakes (4/5) This dish was a little too sweet for me, but the whipped butter was delicious and the pancakes were so fluffy. A couple other details I appreciated were how large the paper towels in the bathroom were (great quality) and that John gave us a personalized thank you note for dining with them!I would DEFINITELY return!

We enjoyed a delicious team happy hour and 3-course 12-plate dinner! The team loved the trendy vibe of the bar area and ambiance of the restaurant. We ordered a couple bottles of delicious Sauvignon blanc and Malbec equivalent wines. Our highlights were the foccacia, bison tartare, burrata, lamb loin, mushroom risotto, bittersweet budino and the olive oil torta - pretty much the entire meal! The service was excellent and attentive. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a nice evening out or a work dinner!
Be the first to ReplyGreat ambiance if you can snag a table outside on the patio.
waiters very attentive and helpful. However, given the high prices, the food was thoroughly underwhelming. We had 3 different dishes, but all of them tasted like indistinguishable mush (apart from the meat). No discernible attempt at inventive or even spicy flavoring. Won't go back.

We had dinner here last night and everything was beyond amazing. Victoria was our server and she was a delight, super attentive but also let us enjoy conversation. She even took the time to write the most beautiful note as we were celebrating a graduation. Our food runner was so sweet and friendly and made sure we knew what each dish was. The service from them both was far above par. We did the tasting menu and it was a lot of food (not mad about this!) and everything was so delicious. Also loved the Greek wine list, I love something different. Thank you for a perfect, relaxing, delicious night out!

Food. Service. Decor. Ambiance. Absolutely NOTHING went unnoticed. I will be back.

5 stars and let me say it's my second or third time there ! Staff is amazing (my mom was seated in a spot where she kept getting bumped so she moved her seat but I saw the manager ask the staff to stop going through that tiny opening) I begged the manager for a rsvp seating for 7 during restaurant week and she accommodated us despite it being a full house, ambience is a "must see", their outdoor fire pitt and heated section is one of the BEST I've seen in dc, plus their mixologist was Killing it!! We're not big drinkers but all had multiple cocktails! Also it should be shared that this is based on their restaurant week winter 2022 menu ... so I appreciated they were doing multiple family style dishes to start off, a very tasty cabbage salad, nicely grilled sweet chipolini onions, deviled eggs with trout roe, these incredibly roasted baby carrots with harissa and mint, amazing arancini balls, an awesome warm flavorful flatbread.... So the issue for me was we were 7 people... and it looked as though despite the very plentiful offerings, it was one small dish of cabbage salad / onions / carrots per two people, technically we should have had three brought to the table. But it was a bit awkward to share these two smaller platings amongst seven of us- also the focaccia was hard and dense and super cold.. not very pleasant ...one arancini and one deviled egg per person was totally understandable though and delicious . The next challenge was the main scallop dish with shrimp chorizo- it was so beautifully plated, such a GENEROUS dish to have offered for restaurant week, and such a unique combo with some leeks and the shrimp chorizo, but essentially all of us who ordered it denoted it was super super salty, to the point where some of us couldn't finish it ... it's almost as though there was an actual kitchen misstep or someone new that night... Desert was incredible and decadent ! The reality is I'll still go back because I want to continue to support them and keep places like this thriving in our city !

Was very excited this spot since so many people rave about it. First, I have to say the service was impeccable, our waitress went above and beyond to make sure that we had a great dining experience. Wasnt able to get outdoor seating which was a bummer but still had a great time. For the food, we came here for dinner and chose the tasting menu which surprisingly had big portions (not mad about that!). The fresh baked focaccia was absolutely to die for. I was debating getting one to go lol. The antipasti dishes were a collection of small appetizer-like dishes that were all unique and presented beautifully. Although there were a few that tasted very meh, like the cauliflower and anchovy pairing. I was not a huge fan the caesar salad. It seemed rather plain and did not really compliment the 2 other dishes of the main course. Overall, I recommend this restaurant if you are looking for a great ambiance and good food. Some dishes were great and others did not impress, but I would be willing to return ad try a different tasting menu.
Be the first to ReplyHave lived in DC 30 years.
Used to come to Iron Gate a bunch. Then they went super meat-heavy a few years ago and we only came here for drinks (we don't eat meat). Now, Staying at the Mayflower for a staycation and checked out the menu. Called the restaurant to specifically note that we don't eat meat and ensure there are options (the fish-based Feast of the Seven Fishes was still showing on OpenTable). Matthew who answered the phone said absolutely. Came to the restaurant. Our waiter John was delightful and very engaging. We expressly told him we don't eat meat but fish was fine. He specifically told us that the entire first course of the farmers table was all non-meat items and we were fine. The back waiters brought all of the 7-8 items in the first course. All *seemed* to be fish oriented. When they came to remove the plates after we had eaten everything, we asked in detail about a couple of the dishes. The woman said one was pork. When I questioned her aggressively, she said yes it was some sort of pork fritter or something. So my husband and I were literally three days shy of 10 years with no meat. January 1, 2012. Days Staggering to me that a restaurant of the supposed quality of Iron Gate could have made such a horrific error. 9 years, 362 days without meat and the Iron Gate ruined our health conscious choice through carelessness and inattentiveness. We will NEVER again go here. If you are vegetarian or gluten free or any other type of food-sensitive situation, we cannot warn you off enough. Finally, I know the restaurant feels bad -- but there is literally nothing they can do. My stomach feels like garbage 30 minutes after I ate a pork fritter (or something) -- and this is entirely on Iron Gate. They seriously f-d up tonight -- something no high-end restaurant should ever do. There is no excuse and no redemption for them.
Be the first to ReplyMy workplace did an event here and they loved it.
Impeccable service, delicious food, generous quantities and variety. Highly recommend it for events. I decided to have dinner there with a friend. The vegetarian options were limited, which is fine -- but I was disappointed by heaviness (read:oil) of the veggie options and all marks on the pasta, which was crunchy -- not al dente. The focaccia had grapes in it, which broke my brain and seemed like an error. It is beautiful! The service is very, very good. I think I had an off night. Give it a shot -- esp. if you can enjoy the full menu. The history alone is worth it.

WOW. This restaurant is truly a hidden gem. Tucked away on a dark street with just a modest door sign, Iron Gate opens up to a beautiful outdoor patio area and cozy back room with fireplace. The service is phenomenal and the waiter's recommendations for their seasonal menu was on point--I love that the menu changes so often. The staff also gave my friend a handwritten card along with dessert for her birthday. Portions are on the smaller side but what was missing in quantity for the capellacci was made up in FLAVOR. I've never had a more flavorful pasta than the one at Iron Gate. The salty and savory flavors from the county ham blended perfectly with the sweet cream for this pasta dish. I could've devoured it in 30 seconds but I really wanted that dish to last. If you're looking for a more substantial volume, the trumpet mushroom carbonara was also great, just a bit more mild than the capellacci. The cider drink was dangerously delicious and easy to drink. The warm cinnamon was perfect for a damp, rainy day. Iron Gate is a perfect spot for a romantic date or celebration!
