Style over substance? How can this place merit its former reputation?
Visited as a couple for a weekend dinner treat, based on the strong online reviews and creole cooking style advertised. The restaurant itself seemed odd in a local strip mall setting, with decor that felt like it was really trying hard to be an upmarket dining room, but in a secondary location. The website had a number of spelling mistakes, which should have been a warning for a fine-dining establishment - my favourite being the section describing the various โRooomsโ available. The service was polite and attentive - our waitress was charming. She was excellent throughout. The food, however, was really poor - on a menu that, again, appeared to be trying too hard to be upmarket but slipped into pretentiousness - does anyone know what a โsesame situationโ is as a food description?! Starters ordered were BBQ shrimp and oyster stew. The shrimp was adequate, drowned in a mixture that was heavy-handed with something, probably Worcester sauce. The oyster stew wasnโt a stew at all. It was 4 poached oysters served in a small amount of a sort of oyster bisque/reduction. Unfortunately the bisque was very acidic/acrid and therefore unpleasant to eat - Iโm not sure what the reason was - too much lemon or vinegar or Worcester sauce perhaps. Mains were red fish and mushroom/fennel (with its sesame situation!). The red fish was nicely cooked. It came with a mix of mushrooms, peas and small roast potatoes which should have been delicious but in fact was almost inedible as the mixture was unbelievably salty. I think it was the mushrooms that were the problem, but surely the chef would have tasted it before letting it leave the kitchen. With the other main, the fennel was overcooked and the whole dish was covered with a strong chilli that overpowered it. The waitress kindly took that dish away and took it off the check. Overall, therefore, we were spectacularly disappointed. Paying these prices, one expects great quality cooking and attention to detail in the kitchen, combined with good service. The service matched up. The food really was poor. A bad day in the office.

Service was courteous and efficient The duck gumbo had a chocolate roux and was delicious The oyster salad was TERRIBLE- I only tasted fried cornmeal-never tasted an oyster!!! Over 80$ for 2 glasses of white wine I will never return as this is the second terrible experience I have had at this resturant

We went for brunch Waited 10 min at front desk as sign requested. After no one came we went into the bar area and took a seat. There were only a few people present. A server came an we ordered glass of wine. My friend and I discussed the menu and each ordered an item from the brunch menu. The check was for just over a 100$ including tip. Now there is a fine line between cost and frequency. The food was great but at that price it will be a long time if ever I return.

I was desperate to find any restaurant in Memphis that had an elegant setting with high quality food that did not involve bbq and plastic forks for lunch. It was quite a search on TripAdvisor but, Iris saves the day! My husband, daughter, and I enjoyed the high quality service, attention to detail, and delicious food. Fish and burgers were excellent and perfectly done.

Went to dinner with a business group including several out of towners. I was disappointed and embarrassed. Food quality was okay at best and the service was worse. Fried green tomatoes were like cardboard. Wedge salad was the worst I've ever had. Filet was okay, but not worth $58. I should've had the bread pudding, as others said it was the best part of their meal. I think that was a polite way of saying it was the only good part. I plan never to return.

We had high hopes. We passed on Andrew Michael to eat here//4 people $500 incl tip--no bottes of wine-2 bourbons and 2 glasses of wine/drinks good//salad unrewarding//main courses-4 fish dinners-salmon good-3 dinners a la carte fish -terribly dry,overcooked-tasteless all desserts mediocre except the chocolate cake/mousse very good//This is the 2nd disappointing expensive dinner since they opened in east Memphis//It is obvious Kelly is not cooking!//The old Iris was much better but not as pretty//armed security in the parking lot-good idea
Be the first to ReplySadly the Restruant Iris is failing after relocating to E. MEM.
We had brunch here on Sunday, and we're promptly seated for our 1PM reservation. Not this restruant moved to 4550 Poplar in October. Food was OK, but the service was horrible. Therefore more workers than customers. But my boy had to ask 3 times for his eggs which he got as the other 3 of us were finishing up. I had to ask 6 times for a cocktail which I also received when we were all finished. Did not appear to have any alcohol in it. This restruant has really went down hill after they moved to east Memphis & we had been to the original location many times as it was always execellant.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful Space but Disappointing Dinner
This restaurant and bar has been long-awaited by Memphians who are hungry for more privately-owned upscale restaurants. Although beautifully-designed, there is a little too much space alotted for the bar, leaving a slightly cramped feeling in the main dining room. Unfortunately, the overall meal was a disappointment. Our drinks were very good, and our appetizer,a fried green tomato dish, was tasty although a bit greasy. I like that the menu offers a few fish dishes a la carte with an option of sauces that can be added. Although I am not a fish-lover, a well-prepared sea bass is hard to resist. My sea bass was swimming in oil or butter, enough so that I had pull the fish to the side of the plate in an attempt to drain it off and redeem the dish. I would not order this again because of the boring, greasy preparation and lackluster taste. I was hoping the succotash side dish would save this meal, but this dish is full of some kind of sauce that was not what I expected or wanted. My husband ordered fish, grits and mushrooms. He too was unimpressed with his meal. Our (tiny) portion of chocolate bread pudding for dessert was enjoyable. We routinely dine out weekly at upscale privately-owned Memphis restaurants, but it will be a while until we go back to Restaurant Iris. It is fairly new, and they still may be working out their menu and their recipes. This disappointing meal including one appetizer, two main dishes, 3 sides, one dessert and two drinks totaled over $200 including a generous tip for our very excellent waiter, Nile. We consider this too much to pay for a mediocre meal. I would want to come back if there were helthier options in fish and vegetable preparation. Some of us look for dishes that are not loaded with oils and calories that do nothing to improve flavor. I do plan to come back for lunch and try what looks like some excellent salads.

Our experience was absolutely exquisiteโfrom the delicious drinks and appetizers to the perfectly presented and delectable entrees (sea bass and s diver scallops), to the peanut butter and chocolate bread pudding. The chef has made Restaurant Iris a must-do if you are in Memphis. We were traveling through on a cross-country trip and the atmosphere was welcoming and elegant. The service was excellent. Highly recommend!

My boyfriend and I visited for our 6 month anniversary. The food was just ok, especially for the price. My boyfriend ordered the surf and turf and his filet was cooked very uneven. Ordered medium rare and some parts were medium well if not well done. My redfish was good as was dessert. Atmosphere was ok. Not at capacity due to covid and even then was very loud in the space. Very open and can hear conversations around you. There are nicer, more intimate places in this price range in Memphis.

Great for a small group or a special couple date! save room for dessert! Entrees were the best. It was exciting to have the chef visit your table and a special note from the staff saying "Happy Anniversary!"
Be the first to ReplyAmazing as always!
Amazing as always! We have been to Iris more than once and it is one of our favorite Memphis restaurants! A wonderful place for a date night! The food is always fantastic and not like anything you can get anywhere else in Memphis. The shrimp and grits, Brussels sprouts, tomato bisque and the bread I would highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyDo not eat here
Absolutely awful experience - it is truly impossible to put into words. After waiting for a table for a long time, we were seated with no apology at a table that was too small for our party and waited almost an hour to order. The food is expensive for Memphis, which is fine if the quality is up to standards - but it was not. The scallops were fishy, and the mushroom pasta dish came out cold. We heard many other tables complaining about the service as well. It seems like the only redeeming quality is the โfamousโ chef, but it is clear he is not at all involved in the day-to-day operations of the restaurant and leaves it to under-qualified chefs and incompetent servers. This is not worth the money and you could have a better $10 fried chicken meal here in Memphis and still be treated better.

Last New Yearโs Eve we ate and spend over 350 dollars on food at restaurant Iris. It gave me a horrible food poisoning. I emailed the restaurant to tell what happened the morning after and left an voicemail message, that I got really sick. They never cared to answer my email or apologies. Bad service, bad food (salad had sand in it!) sweet waitress. Do not eat here...
Be the first to ReplyA Delicious Refresh for Iris
We have been long time fans of Restaurant Iris and recently visited for the first time after it's remodel and menu change. Both of those efforts certainly paid off. The bar is larger and provides a few seats. The new menu offers great twists on classic dishes. We started with their housemade molasses bread. Wow! Don't miss it. Our starters included the salad of shrimp remoulade and the roasted bone marrow, which were perfect! Entrees included the redfish amandine and the grilled beef striploin (with added fried oysters). We had a side of their perfectly prepared general tso's brussel sprouts and they, too, were wonderful. We did not have room for dessert, but will be back to try that too.

I had dinner at Iris about three weeks ago and I still have fond memories of the wonderful food and service. No wonder the ranking for this restaurant is so high, they actually deserve it. I started with a crab salad, and my entree was a perfectly cooked steak. In the end I split a pudding. 10 experience overall!
