Charged Full Price for Reduced Portions. Under-Cooked Food. And a terrible way to start the New Year.5 Part Review: 1) Getting Seated. 2) Food & Drinks. 3) Bill. 4) Previous Visit Experience. 5) Obnoxious Party of 20+ People*** I want to preface that this was a solid 7.5/10 restaurant (good for NYC standards) based on my previous experience. Overpriced food so assume you are paying for the ambience and the lack of good, reasonably priced Chinese restaurants in Manhattan. By definition, this is not a "high end" restaurant, so not sure why some people are calling it that. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this place for holiday meals. ***1) I had a Yelp reservation for 5 people at 7:30pm on Saturday, 1/21/23. They clearly overbooked which is UNACCEPTABLE because it's not the 1st time they had a reservation issue (look at Xmas and Thanksgiving day reviews). IF HWA YUAN CANNOT FIX THIS ISSUE, THEY NEED TO TAKE WALK-IN ONLY, especially for holidays. When we arrived, no one was at the front taking down names and checking in reservations. And they were not able to give our table an ETA. We arrived at 7:35pm and were not seated until about 8:15pm. About 40 minute wait. I heard that other parties waited over 1 hour though. 2) They sold out of our 1st choice beef dish which is fine but it's unacceptable that they REDUCED the portions for 2 of our main dishes. And the rice was bad. It was over cooked and mushed together. Our 1st dish, 2 bowls of Chili Wontons, did not arrive until 8:50pm (35 min after we were seated). It tasted like vinegar and was not spicy (not as good as last time I visited). Scallops with Mushrooms and Fillet of Veal came out between 9:10-9:22pm. Scallops were fried instead of sautéed. They clearly reduced the portions to 1-person serving for these 2 dishes. Last time I visited the scallop & mushroom dish and all other main dishes were appropriately family-sized. Even though the portions were small, we did not finish the scallop and veal dishes because they tasted so bad. Only the duck and fillet of sole came out appropriately sized because it was whole. Fried fish was tasty, and the only edible dish. The Beijing duck arrived last at 9:40pm. The skin was not crispy and the server did not cut the duck completely (like they did last time I visited). The wraps for the duck smelled and felt like under-cooked tortillas. We told the waiter the wraps were undercooked and pretty sure he just microwaved it. So Peking Duck dish was just duck because the wraps were so bad we couldn't eat them. We finished dinner at about 10pm. During this 2 hour process, we could not order water because they ran out of cups. So we were forced to order beer and soda. Cups for water became available some time after 9:40pm but some of the glasses were still dirty (one had a lipstick stain on it). We honestly considered going outside to buy some bottles of water. 3) Our total bill was $319.01 which is totally unreasonable. Why are we being charged for beer and soda when we could not get water? Portions for the Veal and Scallops dishes were reduced, so bill for those 2 items should ALSO be reduced. Items 1-5 equates to $241, so I assume the $78 remaining is from drinks, rice, and tax...1. Whole Beijing Duck 北京鴨 = $802. Fillet of Sole Sautéed with Salt & Spicy Pepper 椒鹽麻辣魚片 = $523. Scallops Sautéed with Mushrooms 干貝釀花菇 = $484. Fillet of Veal with XO Sauce 香炒小牛柳 = $37 5. Wonton with Chili Sauce 紅油炒手 = $12 (ordered 2x)6. 3 beers, and 2 Sprites7) 3 bowls of rice Website prices are outdated so not sure if these prices are correct either... 4) I've been to Hwa Yuan once before and ordered several dishes including the Beijing Duck, Chili Wontons, and Scallops with Mushrooms. Food is a little over-priced IMO. The duck was the best dish and probably one of the better ones in NYC. Skin was crispier and fattier/juicier than Uluh's. Recommend this restaurant only for the Beijing Duck.5) Obnoxious Party of 20+ People. I saw the birthday boy harassing the hostess and felt alarmed for her. I wish they had refused service for this party because they took up 3/4 of the front room. They were obnoxiously loud and rude to the waiters and made dinner very painful for my party. I could barely hear my friend seated next to me. And my ears were ringing after dinner. The table next to ours did not seem happy with their seating either.
