This place should be 5 stars because the food is quite good.
The problem is that their portions are ridiculously small and expensive for what you get. I have lived in Sri Lanka for many years and know what is normally expected. Curries should be served with rice; however, here you pay quite a bit extra for a little bit of basmati rice. Hoppers and string hoppers are usually inexpensive items and there should be copious amounts to sop up the sauces. Here you pay a super inflated supplement for very small portions of these things. The condiments are served in thimble sized containers and should be free; here you will pay quite a bit for these extras. Even the main courses ie: curries are served in small containers that would at most be enough for one mildly hungry person. And yet, the food is really quite good! If they served larger sizes, were more generous with their supplements and less rapacious it would be a terrific place.

This was one of the best meals I had in London (if not the best). I came on a weekday evening around 7. We didn't have a reservation and were told the wait would be about an hour to an hour half for a party of 4. We waited at a cafe nearby until they texted us. Service here was very good and everything comes out very quickly which is nice.WE ORDERED:fish kari - pretty good! You should definitely order this if you love fish 4/5black pork kari - amazing amazing option. Robust flavors and unforgettable taste 5/5butter squid - highly recommend 5/5dosa - very fun and interesting way to eat curry. Everyone should definitely try it! 5/5fish rice - flavorful and delicious 4/5Everything was amazing. There is a restroom. They also serve alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks and there is bar seating as well.
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite food in London is at Hoppers, which I first
My favorite food in London is at Hoppers, which I first discovered 5 years ago on my honeymoon and have been coming back to every time I'm in London. Their curries (or "karis") are just so flavorful and the meat is cooked so perfectly -- plus there are fun "hoppers" and "dosa" dishes (which are a gluten-free, lighter, crepe-like kind of bread vs. naan/roti -- although they have that too). I absolutely love Indian food, but Sri Lankan food is even better. I just think the combination of spices is smoother (less "Christmas" spice), and there's more use of coconut milk vs. dairy/yogurts (which adds another depth of flavor) -- and the spice levels can be customized to be just as spicy as your favorite Indian curry.Must-try: "masala dosa" (a light crepe filled with mashed potatoes and spices) and a "kari" (my favorite is when they have the lamb shank kari, but I also love the chicken). This spot in SoHo is the first of their 3 locations I think, and it definitely feels homey and cozy inside (which also means this is their smallest location and gets a little cramped). Reservations in advance are a must, since there aren't that many tables.
Be the first to ReplyBone marrow Varuval + Roti 6.
21/10- this was good but honestly way too creamy for me and I've come to the conclusion I'm not to keen on bone marrow as I don't really like the texture/consistency. It was very rich in flavor, however I got tired after the first few bites. I was hoping the roti (pictured on slide 5) was more like the consistency and taste of a paratha however it was a bit bland in my opinion. (One of their most popular dishes) Chili Cheese Dosa 7.32/10- this was delicious. Normally not a chili cheese person however the combination was perfect and the breading felt like a thicker, more rich crepe. Incredibly filling though- could only eat a few bitesPrawn and green mango Kari 6.45/10- good but not really what I was expecting. Tasted incredibly coconut-y and honestly way to creamy for my liking especially in combination to be served with the chili cheese dosa. (Apparently one of their most popular menu items but I'd suggest getting the chicken/lamb kari) Mutton Rolls with Lankan Ketchup 7.68/10- this was really good the breading reminded me of a mixture between churro and mozzarella sticks (not nearly anywhere as sweet as churros outer layer) the lamb melts in your mouth with a mix of creamy cheese. So filling but worth. (Also one of their most popular dishes)Egg Hopper. 4.87/10- this reminded me of a more bland version of Ethiopian bread but with a coconut flavor to it. The egg yolk in the middle made it taste really good with the curry however this wasn't really my vibe. (Also really popular)This was a cool experience. This is an award winning restaurant that serves Sri Lankan and South Indian dishes. It was a great experience, however incredibly filling and creamy. Their dishes definitely had lots of flavor to them and it is quite popular.

Hoppers is a fantastic Sri Lankan restaurant with a couple locations around London (there's also one in south Marylebone and one in King's Cross). This one is the original and has all the same great food -- albeit I'm not as much a fan of the ambiance or layout here (it's a bit cramped and more run-down -- hence the 4 stars). In terms of menu, you can't go wrong with the Taste of Hoppers -- though beware it's a ton of food! The mutton rolls and the hot butter squid are especially good, and the kottu roti is always a winner. Obviously the food is very flavorful and spicy, so think twice if you have a British palate!Overall one of the gems of London's food scene.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing! I'd eat here everyday if I could.
I stopped in for a late lunch on a whim and was blown away by the flavors!

Very good and unique food, a little spicy but ask for yoghurt and you'll be fine. Be there in time because the place gets crowded really fast. Serving staff was really pleasant and nice.

We came for lunch and ordered the chicken bites, two karis (aubergine and chicken), egg hopper, and masala dosa. The chicken bites were amazing, very juicy and tender, and perfectly marinated. The karis were good, but would have preferred more aubergine in the vegetarian one. The masala dosa was very good - probably our favorite, and perfect for sharing. The egg hopper looked aesthetic, but a rather bland egg white taste. Personally I preferred the coconut chutney to the karis, but good meal overall!

Loved the hoppers here! Not something that I can get anywhere in North America except maybe in NYC and Silicon Valley... Just in London, Sri Lanka, and the southernmost tip of India (I'd love to check out Sri Lanka and southern India some day after the pandemic).I want to return for the vegetarian tasting menu.Loved the Soho-Picadilly area! Very trendy area with lots of amazing restaurants open late... a bit like the Marais in Paris but without all the fashion boutiques.
Be the first to ReplyHoppers might be one of my true loves if I'm being honest.
I live for their bone marrow varuval and egg hoppers with coconut chutney and mutton curry. Also their mocktails and cocktails are lovely. I've been to their Soho and KX locations. KX has much more space and is better for larger groups. Go for soho if you want a little more intimacy!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing.
The cauliflower dish was so tasty! They also bring your food out really fast. Bone marrow is great also. If in London please try to go
Be the first to ReplyHad a friend recommend I try Hoppers when I came to London
Had a friend recommend I try Hoppers when I came to London and wow, I was not disappointed. I have absolutely no experience with Sri Lankan cuisine and when I told my waiter that, he was super helpful in telling me what he recommended I try as a first-timer and going over ingredients in everything. The food itself was super tasty, the portion looked small but I actually got so full I couldn't finish. The hopper was absolutely delightful and was great dipped in the chutney and the kari. Fish kari was made with sea bass and tasted delicious without being too fishy. The arrack attack was described to me as having traditional flavors and it certainly lived up to that, complimenting the food perfectly. Can't wait to come back next time I'm in the city!

They didn't offer reservations so i assumed showing up at 9pm we would never get in... but sure enough 45 minutes last we got a text that our table was ready.Long story short: this was the best meal I had in London!! What an experience.I have to admit when I heard we were going to a Sri Lankan restaurant I assumed the cuisine would be in line with Indian fare i get frequently. Since it was my first Sri Lankan meal i decided to go with the tasting menu. WOW!! The tasting menu comes with green peppercorn chicken wings, bonemarrow, mutton rolls, one hopper, one dosa, and chicken/lamb.It really was more of an experience than a meal and the food was honestly the highlight of this visit to London. Unbelievable quality for the price and service was top notch. I highly recommend the tasting menu to get everything this place has to offer.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is incredible.
Service is prompt but I never felt rushed. I will definitely be back.I went on my own so I was seated right away at the bar. I ordered way too much, but everything was delicious. I will definitely be back, but just order fewer dishes. My favorites from this round were the bone marrow starter (incredible, and unique), and the egg hopper with pol sambal and seeni sambol (very authentically Sri Lankan, pretty light, but still substantial). If you want a little more food, the black pork kari is really interesting - a dry spiced meat dish, it was flavorful without much heat, and rich without being too heavy. The drinks are also really good, so try a cocktail! I had the Arrack cocktail which went great with the food, and then had the chocolate coconut non-alcoholic drink for dessert. The dinner can add up if you order way too much like I did (2 starters, hopper, 2 sambols, kari, and 2 drinks), but you can also dine on a budget if you choose appropriately (next time I would get 1 starter, hopper, and 2 sambols, 1 drink, and it would add up to about 1/3 as much. If I were looking for a light meal, just the starter or just the hopper and sambols would be enough, and I'm pretty sure either of those options would be about 10 pounds).
Be the first to ReplyGet here early cause it does get filled up.
The food is quite awesome. The staff are friendly. Can't get seated until your party is here. No reservations. Quick, good food. The Egg Hopper is a personal favorite along with the highly recommend Black Pork Curry. Wash it down with a Lion.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food small spot not good for large parties.
..long wait if you do not have reservations
Be the first to ReplyThis was my first time having Sri Lankan food & I loved it!
This was my first time having Sri Lankan food & I loved it! This place is a bit dark but still well lit, intimate but also fun! They don't take reservations & it's in a pretty busy area so we had to wait, but trust me, it was well worth the wait! Plus you can always walk around while you wait so it's really not that bad! Tamarind & Ginger Chicken WingsSo. much. flavor! A bit small in portion, but I can feel myself drooling as I was chewing. Perfect way to start the meal. Egg HopperThink of a crispy savory crepe with an egg inside. It was wonderfully presented & also pretty yummy! Lamb KariWe ordered this so we can dip our egg hopper in it. It also came with coriander & pol sambol chutneys - both elevated the dish as a whole because they were so heavy in flavor. Loved it! Lamb Kothu RotiI was kinda worried ordering 2 lamb dishes, but then I was like wth, lamb is fire. Happy to report that it definitely did not disappoint! Seriously wished my tummy was bigger so I can try the other ones :(
