Hither Hills has no cell service, why is that not mentioned?
They do not have any kind of cell service or 5g, 4g, LTE, no I do not expect them to provide any of those things but, I shouldn't pull into the parking lot, look at my phone and see SOS. I asked the lady as I checked in and her words were, oh, yeah we're in a dead zone. I went out there to relax while I worked remotely. I drove 3 hours out from the city and immediately turned around and drove 3 hours back because I have to work. The $150 I paid for my week is a donation to the park service. I looked online and did not see anywhere that they have noooooo cell service at all and that I'd have to go into town, which I was told. Be forewarned, and TBH it was like a huge parking lot near the beach, I didn't even walk around. Maybe I'm spoiled, I just went to Jonathan Dickinson in Florida and it was quite lovely and my phone worked. What if there is a medical emergency? All they know about guests are their first and last names.

40 years plus of camping here. Tent or pop-up. The folks running the store this year were the best ever! So nice and helpful. Showers in one of the bath houses were down the whole week. They need to prevent that. The only recommendation I have and I have the same every year is they ignore night time security. By that I mean protecting you from the drunk and loud campers next door. They say it is quiet time after 10 pm but they do nothing to assure that. There are no cops driving through as there were years ago. The ranger drives through and hassles people at 11am each day about car stickers, etc. That is worthless. He needs to drive through at 11pm and tell everyone to shut up. Also you are allowed to list 6 people per site yet they allow people to set up tarps big enough to hold 40 people with two drinking ping-pong tables going at once. Common sense guys...

My favourite beach in NY, really beautiful. Low-key and lovely in the mornings. I was disappointed to see a few items of plastic trash on the beach in the early mornings, it's always been a pristine beach. Saw a whale, which was an unexpected treat!
Be the first to ReplyAnother amazing trip to Hither Hills !!!~
Not to give my age away....but I have been going to Hither Hills for more than 50 years....My grandparents, who lived in Springs used to take me there as a young child. Also, our parents used to take us there as family through out the years....And we go with our family and grandkids. There is nothing better than falling asleep to the sound of the waves....EXCEPT of course playing in them during the day... I think this may be one of the best state parks in NYS....

My husband and I visited Hither Hills State Park on a Saturday. It is quite large and with minimal cell service in the area, we got lost looking for the Coastal Trail. We came across the Walking Dunes Trail by accident. (There was free parking on the street bordering the trail.) We only did the first loop but it was very unique and featured views of the water, dunes and forest. We later found the Coastal Trail and parked in the lot at the end of Navy Road. (Parking was free.) The trail was easy and had a nice mix of forest and water views.

Don't miss the Walking Dunes hike! But, be prepared for mosquitos! The past reviews are not kidding. Swarms of big, fat hungry mosquitos. Saw people tucking their arms in their shirt & running back to the entrance! We pushed through & were SO grateful. What a beautiful natural phenomenon! My teens ran up & down & rolling in the dunes for hours. Great numbered informational trail. What?! A forest is buried under the dunes??!! The walk along the beach to get back was the perfect ending.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful experience, Geanie is awesome!
We had a great experience at hither hills, and Geanie at the front desk of the entrance area was so helpful, polite and kind! She went out of her way to take care of us and make sure we had everything we needed during our time on the site. 10/10!!!
Be the first to ReplyBe prepared for ticks.
I had read only a few sporadic reviews about ticks and and did not pay them much mind. Upon setting up and laying out our tents we started noticing a number of them grabbing on to the fabric and crawling around. Immediately we began spraying ourselves. Throughout the trip I found them crawling on my tent, on people clothes, up a beach chair, drop a towel and find them on it immediately, one made it into my tent but luckily didn't find me. Not going to lie, it did wig me out and I was a bit anxious. I camp in the woods and it's never been a problem. The park should take some measures to curb the population but I learned that ticks are a problem on Long Island and there has been a boom in the past couple years. Aside from the ticks the beach is amazingly clean and beautiful. The waves were big when we visited and were tough for smaller or older folks to enjoy the water. We did have heavy storms come through but that is camping. Spots are very large and the concrete slap is a nice convenience. The park is much larger than I expected from Google Map images. We ended up using the main bath house in the middle of the beach but it felt like a 1/4 mile hike in an emergency! The smaller loop has the private showers but they are poorly vented and stay very steamy after the water is off. Other campers were very respectful and quiet. The tent loop looks nice but they are closer together and are a farther walk to the beach. Due to covid the camp store was closed so we visited the 7-11 for ice. Tight parking and the ice price is expensive.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful place and amazing staff
We try to come back here every summer. Sound of waves, long walks on the beach, stargazing at night. It is a perfect camping experience! Many thanks to the park staff this year, especially Janet Bravo💚 and her team. Thank you!!!
Be the first to ReplyLots of ticks.
Place is beautiful. Been here often but have never seen this many ticks. They are everywhere. Even in the short grass around the campsites.
