Great seafood, nice ambiance!
This was our best meal in Charleston. The ceviche was excellent and different. Grilled swordfish perfectly done. And the bouillabaisse was outstanding, with a very generous selection of shellfish and other seafood. Also, our waiter, who we at first thought was merely annoying, was hilariously loud and theatrical, adding (for us, at least) a memorable touch to the evening.

Great place for seafood! Waitstaff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Seafood was fresh and delicious. I got the grilled seafood platter with shrimp, scallops and grouper. Delicious but the grouper “filet” was ridiculously small. That’s my only complaint. Restaurant was quite busy and very noisy. Still recommend and would go back.

Food is usually great but my crab cake was very mushy. Waiter was excellent. Noise level in restaurant makes normal conversations impossible. Desert selections could improve. Pecan pie not too exciting as served. Would give it another try.
Be the first to ReplyWay Overrated, Bad Food and Hidden Charges
I had read many good things about Hanks and they have apparently won some awards but we do not understand the positive reviews and awards. Our experience was not good. The one positive was the service. Our waiter was very professional. The ambiance is lacking as it is just one large room with tables jammed next to each other. It was noisy. My wife ordered a glass of Riesling that was clearly not a Riesling. Tasted like a dry Chardonnay. The she crab soup was terrible. It was so heavy on the sherry that you could not taste the crab or soup. Very strong alcohol taste. The waiter assured me that the blackened scallops were not spicy at all. They were so spicy I really couldn't taste the scallops. The scallops came with grits cratered to hold cream corn. Doesn't sound bad but it was not especially tasty. The topper was realizing later that we had been charged 2.5% for a service charge to support culinary wages. Never heard of such a thing and seems like it should voluntary. We left a large tip as it is. We were also charged a 1% credit card fee! In my 60+ years of eating in restaurants all over the world, I have never been charged a credit card fee. We recommend steering clear of Hanks.

Hank's cares more about their furniture than their customers! We flew into Charleston in January to celebrate my husband's 70th birthday. When we arrived, Hank's was near our hotel, so we stopped in to celebrate with drinks and dinner. We didn't have a reservation, so we grabbed a cozy spot for two at the end of the bar. Unfortunately, the bar stools didn't have backs on them, and my husband's back started to hurt. We noticed a similar bar stool nearby with a back, so we made the switch since we didn't want to bother anyone and didn't think it was a big deal. Oh, were we wrong! A very upset manager came over about 10 minutes later and said she wanted that chair put back. We explained about my husband's back problems and that it was his 70th birthday. She didn't care one bit. She said that chair didn't belong at the bar. Wait, what?? So we left and went to Meeting at Market restaurant who bent over backwards to help my husband celebrate this milestone event. I have to say, every restaurant we visited in Charleston was incredible, EXCEPT for Hanks.

Great ambiance, great service followed by great food!! First time to Hank’s and were very impressed at all levels. Wife had a glass of wine (generous pour) and I had an Old fashion (very tasty) to start and had mussels appetizer. Huge amount of mussels in tasty sauce. Broiled seafood platter and pan seared scallops were 2 of the best entrees in a long time. Crème Brule finished off a wonderful meal. Appreciated the great job Cameron did making sure it was memorable.

Great service, knowledgeable team, good food in a non rushed atmosphere. Sean (Shawn) was our server, as usual, he did a fantastic job! This was our fifth time here, we are local and Hanks is not a tourist stop..... food prices keep the tourists out and the it shows when you go in that the clientele is above a majority of restaurants in the area. We usually sit on the "Common" table as we meet people. Will be going back soon. Thank you Hanks!
Be the first to ReplyGood Quality Fish
Excellent food and service. We had calamari as an appetizer, swordfish and grouper special for dinner. Our waiter, Shawn, assisted in drink and dinner choices and was attentive but not intrusive. Highly recommend this restaurant for the best fish dinner in Charleston. Reasonable price for the quality.
Be the first to ReplyProfessional service, great food
We were impressed with our server from the start. The white jacket(s) and dedication to ensuring our enjoyment was apparent. We enjoyed all aspects of our meal. Solid cocktails, delicious entrees and tasty desserts. Would not say this is a “must go” but would never say no to returning again.
Be the first to ReplyBest Seafood and Ambiance in Charleston
Not classic southern cooking (thank God for a change), but great seafood in the best-run restaurant in Charleston. Service and food, not to mention a great Espresso Martini, were first rate, and not a budget-breaker.
Be the first to ReplyGreat entree and she crab soup but disappointing ambiance.
Go for the food…it was delicious~but in spite of the white (plastic) tablecloths, this is not fine dining. It was so loud it was like being in a cafeteria and we were ushered out almost as fast. The restaurant suggested business casual dress but most of the patrons were in shorts. Dessert was ho-hum ( Southern pecan pie that could have been warmed) and the strongest cup of coffee I’ve ever had. On another note, don’t park in the lot across the street. At $13.00 an hour, it was highway robbery. A disappointing $200.00 evening for my husband and I.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Atmosphere
Probably the best food and selection in the area! The waiters are very attentive and friendly. Food portions are just enough to let you enjoy an appetizer and a dessert without being too full!

Love Hank's......we were there 3 times in one week and the bartender's were awesome and treated us well!
Be the first to ReplyWe were able to get a reservation on short notice
Warm homemade bread for the table was very good. I do not eat seafood but was offered a delicious pasta dish with zucchini. My bf ordered the salmon and it was very good. The tuna tar tar was very tasty. Service was excellent. Highly recommend.

During our stay in Charleston, we sampled a different restaurant of this level each night. Hank's easily stood out to both of us as the best. It started with the beautiful interior, continued with Paul, one of the best servers we've experienced anywhere, and didn't skip a beat through the exceptional repast which came from the kitchen. I'm very sensitive to noise, but unless you're at one of the few tables in the alcove just to the right of the entry, it's quieter than a great many equally busy (it was full when we were there) fine restaurants around the world.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, great fun!
To me the mark of a great restaurant is great food, service, and atmosphere. Hank's hits on all three. It's high energy and at "prime time" can be loud. Have a pre dinner drink at the bar and soak it all in. Our thanks to Cam who guided us through the menu with his thoughts and recommendations. I don't need to go through our dinner but suffice it so day everything was fresh and delicious. But I will tell you...leave room for the vanilla cheesecake! (It's actually more like a parfait but delicious nonetheless!) Definitely a "go to" on our next visit.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent, do not miss!
Excellent seafood and a very nice vibe! Our waiter, Cameron, did a great job explaining the menu. We shared the crab cakes, best ever! I had the flounder, husband had tuna and we were both 100% satisfied. It was a highlight of our trip!
Be the first to ReplyOverrated and Underwhelming
Despite the high marks given by reviewers, Hank's is a high-priced establishment with the get-em-in and get-em-out mentality. It was so noisy, we found it difficult to chat across the table and I am not a fan of yelling at my dinner companions. My pan-seared scallops with a fried potato serving (yes, quite tasty!) and pea pods were quite good, although the entire meal swam in the honey and grapefruit sauce that accompanied it. My dinner date loves oysters but found the ones he ordered so smothered in hot sauce, it was difficult to appreciate the seafood. If you don't mind hustle, bustle, noise, and a quick check, eat here. If you're looking for more ambience, try someplace else.

We had reservations here at 6 pm on a Wednesday night. We had an easy walk here from our hotel and arrived 30 minutes early. They were very accommodating and sat us down immediately. Hank's has a more casual atmosphere than I was expecting and seemed to have many locals dining here. The decor is fun and not stuffy. My Honey had been dying for some Scallops so we were very pleased to find them on the menu. I ordered the She Crab Soup as an appetizer, the Red Snapper special and the Pan Seared Sea Scallops. The Pan Seared Scallops came with Fried Mash Potatoes and Snow Peas. My Honey finished her entire serving as it was so Delicious! My Red Snapper was very good also. The She Crab Soup was OK. I also ordered a serving of Cheesecake for us to share. The Cheesecake was very good but the serving size was smaller than what we are used to. I'd pass on the She Crab Soup and the Cheesecake. Hank's did serve us our favorite meal during our short visit to Charleston. Our server Casey was very friendly, knowledgeable and provided us impeccable service. We highly recommend Hank's.
Be the first to ReplyIt’s okay. Definitely not a place I’d go to again.
Food was below average. Reading the reviews, I expected so much more from this restaurant. Staff was great.. very knowledgeable but wasn’t impressed with the food at all, it lacked flavor.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Seafood & Great Service
We had a great experience at Hank's on a busy Sunday evening. The restaurant was totally packed, making the volume at the "energetic level" but it certainly didn't take away from the individual service and/or the fantastic food. We shared the ceviche (possibly the best we've ever had) and the calamari & shrimp appetizers. My husband ordered seared sea scallops while I enjoyed my first bowl of she-crab soup. Everything was delicious. As we were departing, a party of eight (without reservations) was turned away so I would recommend making advance reservations. Thanks go to the staff of Hank's - we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

My family of four adults tried Hank's for the first time on a recent trip, and just wish we'd known to eat there before. We definitely needed a reservation on a very busy Sunday evening, but were seated promptly amid many other tables. Our meal was almost perfect except for two things: My sea scallops were lukewarm to the point of being almost cold. And our server, while attentive at the beginning, was nowhere to be found toward the end of our meal. After waiting quite some time for a refill of my drink and for our bill, I had to flag another server to find him for us. The food was so good though (the greens that came with my dinner were so tasty), that we'll definitely be back.

Hanks is a an elegant restaurant in a great location. Their food is excellent and the service is attentive and friendly. Would highly recommend.

great option if visiting Charleston. The service and food quality was high. Oysters, crab soup and then the butterfly chicken with mash potatoes for main, followed by the pecan pie! It was all excellent no complaints. I would recommend this place for sure. $250 for 2 people but we have 3 courses each and a bottle of champagne.
Be the first to ReplyUnimpressive. Many better choices in Charleston
Hank's didn't live up to the rave reviews. It was just average.
The Ambiance - The restaurant consists of one large square room with many many tables very close to each other. When empty, it was classy but as it filled, it was noisy. We were only able to get a 5 pm reservation which turned out to be a stroke of luck. We were put in a great booth in the corner where we could watch everything. By 5:45, the restaurant was virtually full. It was so loud it made carrying on a conversation difficult.
The food - The She Crab soup was thin and watery. The Shrimp and Grits were disappointing. A bowl arrived filled with red broth/juice/sauce. In the middle was a scoop of grits covered by 9 nice sized shrimp. The grits were creamy and the best I've had in a while. The shrimp were overcooked. The andouille sausage bits were bland and did not contribute to the dish. Overall it was a disappointing meal. My husband had Seafood a la Wanda which he said was "okay".
The drink - My husband ordered Grey Goose on the rocks with olives. The olives were so old that they tainted the taste of the drink. When my husband doesn't like his Grey Goose, something major is wrong.
The service - The hostess was very accommodating and gave us a wonderful table. The servers/bussers were good.
Overall average. We've had better she crab soup and shrimp and grits at many other restaurants in Charleston, Beaufort, and throughout the low country.
