Solid vegetarian menu.
Very generous portions for a tasting menu. Some things like the lettuce wrap salad with pineapple were fantastic, but others like the fried tofu & sweet potato noodles didn't do it for me. Would go back for the a la carte. Very inventive though, four stars for service, atmosphere, and creativity.

As you sit cross-legged in the warm and inviting space of HanGawi, you will feel as if you're in someone's home, about to enjoy a meal that feels homey and made with care. And that is what you'll get. The kimchi tofu stew here is incredible. The depth of flavor (not too spicy at all), the delightfully chewy rice cakes, and mushrooms fill the bowl with combinations of flavors and textures and nutrients that will make you feel nourished and warm. This is where you'll want to be in a rainy or cold day, or simply when you're feeling like tasting something made with love. Plus, it's extremely friendly towards dietary needs, with plenty of gluten-free and vegan items on the menu. I personally wasn't the biggest fan of the kale pancakes and the bibimbap tasted pretty standard, but the tofu stew is truly a cannot miss.

Hangawi provided an unforgettable Valentine's Day experience that surpassed all expectations! From the moment my boyfriend and I stepped into this serene oasis, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of tranquility and romance that set the stage for a truly magical evening. The Valentine's Day menu at Hangawi was nothing short of extraordinary. A meticulously crafted several-course meal awaited us, showcasing the finest in Korean vegetarian cuisine. Each dish was a masterpiece, bursting with flavors and textures that delighted our palates and left us craving more. What truly stood out was the impeccable execution of traditional Korean dishes, all expertly prepared with a vegetarian twist. From the savory pancakes to the flavorful tofu dishes and the aromatic rice bowls, every bite was a revelation, showcasing the culinary prowess of the chefs at Hangawi. Moreover, the ambiance at Hangawi was simply enchanting. The traditional Korean decor, serene ambiance, and attentive service created the perfect backdrop for a romantic evening with my beloved. We felt transported to another world, far away from the hustle and bustle of city life. In conclusion, Hangawi exceeded our wildest expectations and left an indelible mark on our Valentine's Day celebration. If you're searching for an exquisite dining experience that combines exceptional vegetarian cuisine with unparalleled ambiance, look no further than Hangawi. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!
Be the first to ReplyI strongly recommend Hangawi to folks visiting NYC midtown
I strongly recommend Hangawi to folks visiting NYC midtown area, it's a unique place not to miss. They serve vegan Korean food - which is great for a vegetarian like myself. We ordered the pancake platter, the tofu nuggets in black bean sauce and classic stonebowl. The pancake platter was my favorite - each flavor was delicious! The tofu dish was tangy and spicy. The stonebowl dish was the blandest - especially without gochuchang - I would skip this. I loved sitting traditional style with shoes off. Great experience!
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely one of my favorite vegan restaurants in NYC.
It's such a beautiful space and unique experience. The food is fresh, healthy, and authentic. I recommend getting the skewers, tofu skin dumplings, and more than one dessert! Tip: Be sure to get a reservation at least a few days ahead.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful space and decor, and a great menu.
The problem is all of the dishes were very bland. Dumplings were watery and not at all spicy; fried things simply tasted like tempura, and not a particularly good one. Very little flavor in any of the 3 mains our table ordered. The signature cocktails were also beautiful but thin on flavor. In short, much as I love tj concept, the food just is not enjoyable enough to return.
Be the first to ReplyYUM! I loved my experience dining here, end to end.
As a first timer, I thought the sunken tables were really unique. We didn't have to wait that long for our food to come out. It's hard to pick what I enjoyed the most, but I would say the spicy rice cakes and kimbap are tied for first place. I was a little disappointed with the Korean pancake platter as the portions on that were very small.

Upon entering Hangawi, my husband and I were immediately enveloped in a warm and inviting atmosphere. The elegant and understated décor set the stage for an unforgettable meal. Allow me to elaborate. Hangawi is unlike any other Korean restaurant found in K-town. It is an establishment that is entirely vegan, featuring a contemporary ambiance that seamlessly blends with touches of Korean culture. This harmonious ambiance significantly enhanced our dining experience. Having made advance reservations via phone, my husband and I were seated at a beautiful table. I must acknowledge that the attention to detail in the presentation of the silverware and table setting contributed to the overall elegance of the experience. Moving on to the culinary aspect, we commenced our meal by ordering two appetizers: beet noodles with buckwheat pancakes and a winter appetizer platter consisting of dumplings and stuffed shiitake mushrooms, among other delectable offerings. I must honestly assert that the standout appetizer was the beet noodles with buckwheat pancakes. For our main entrees, we selected spicy tofu cutlets in chili and soybean sauce for my husband and bibimbap in a stone bowl with crispy lotus for myself. The diverse flavors truly tantalized my taste buds. In my opinion, the stone bowl with crispy lotus stood out as the superior choice between the two. My sole disappointment was the scarcity of the crispy lotus. We concluded our meal with black sesame cake and matcha cheesecake, both of which were accompanied by two distinct types of vegan ice cream. My husband and I collectively favored the matcha cheesecake over the black sesame cake, which we found to be rather dense. It is important to note that Hangawi's menu is seasonal, meaning that the offerings change from month to month. However, they do maintain a selection of signature dishes that remain available throughout the year. Additionally, they often offer specials, such as the upcoming Valentine's Special. I strongly recommend making advance reservations to ensure a delightful and memorable experience with your partner.
Be the first to ReplyOverall, a good experience.
You are expected to remove your shoes upon entering. We kept our coats with us as there was not anywhere designated to place them - I was grateful for this later on as our table was near the door and it was freezing! The food was good but not great and the vermicelli (japchae) portion was not large. We got the dumplings and mushroom stone bowl with black truffle paste as well. There wasn't much truffle flavor in our stone bowl. I'm not vegetarian/vegan but wanted to try this place out as some of my friends love it. I personally wasn't that impressed but it certainly is a decent option for those who are vegetarian.

Amazing food! Did not know it was vegan but you couldn't even tell with the quality/taste of the food. Our waiter was very attentive and checked in on us often. You're technically not allowed to wear shoes in the restaurant but we sat in a little room for the walk-ins (literally two tables, so lucky us) but it's a low-lighting kind of vibe. The cauliflower bites were sooo good and flavorful. The breading was just right it crunches then melts in your mouth. We got the spicy kimchi + tofu soup and it was soo filling and delicious! There were a lot of different and diverse veggies in there. We also got a kimbap which tasted amazing and smelled even more amazing. We also got fruity cocktails. Highly recommend the lychee one!!

I love Hangawi! I've eaten here three times in the past year and will keep returning. The FOOD is absolutely delicious with very generous portions. Plated very artfully and visually appealing. I always leave in a good mood with a full belly. Not to mention this place is actually HEALTHY & vegan. The restaurant has such a peaceful setting, with unique seating to NY. The service is absolutely exceptional. The waiters and servers are very attentive, patient, and kind. I would also say this place is reasonably priced for the food & experience you're receiving. One of my true favorites & I can't wait to return!
Be the first to ReplyI had been thoroughly looking forward to visiting HanGawi
I had been thoroughly looking forward to visiting HanGawi with a friend while in the city, but was left disappointed at how the food falls short of their aesthetic promise. Here's the thing: HanGawi is a beautiful space. It feels communal because of how close you are seated to other people, and the whole taking your shoes off thing feels intimate. It is. Unfortunately, the food is overpriced and lacks flavor. The kimchi hot pot really tasted like nothing; the sesame leaf tofu patties felt misplaced. Maybe we just got unlucky with our choices on their very substantial menu, but just felt that the price does not merit just the experience alone -- you should get good food, too! That was not the case here.
Be the first to ReplyEating here is a real unique experience.
The Korean food here is different from all the other Korean restaurants in the city which will have similar dishes that taste the same. The creativity, quality and presentation justify the higher prices from the more mainstream Korean restaurants. It tastes like a fancy chef put things together as opposed to your friendly neighborhood Korean mom. Like even the kimchi offered here as a complimentary side dish is different from any kimchi I have ever had at a Korean restaurant (in a refreshingly good way). This place is vegan (and they have a bunch of gluten-free) options and a lot of the dishes seem to be Korean fusion or Korean with a creative flair, but the food still manages to taste authentic and works well. They use very traditional ingredients even if the dishes have been put together in a novel way. Being gluten-free, I of course went for the kale pancakes as an appetizer (which were delicious as I love that chewy rice cake texture) and the noodle vegetable dish (which was amazing and spicy) because it is so hard to find gluten-free pancakes and noodles that when I see gluten-free versions of these dishes on a menu I will go for them. They also have a ton of other gluten-free menu options which I look forward to trying out. What I like about this place is that it is so good that I can see so many different type of people enjoying it. Like I can see my older Korean relatives loving the authentic ingredients and familiar flavors here. I can see my Korean Americanized self making my way through the rest of the menu. I can see vegan/health nuts in the city loving the really healthy tasting food here. And I can see tourist and non-Korean folks getting a kick out high quality Korean fusion food here. This place really kicked it out of the ballpark. I eat out a LOT and this place was an unexpected surprise and made for a really memorable dinner. I definitely plan on eating here again (and making my way through the rest of the gluten-free menu).
Be the first to ReplyThe vegan food was epic at @hangawi.
There were so many choices on the menu that I'm going to have to come back We got the tofu steak, combination kimbap, and acorn noodles The noodles were pricey for the serving size but the two mains were terrific! The sauces were rich and complex. This is a great place to celebrate and have a slightly upscale dinner Three people got birthday serenades and free desserts when I went lol. One nice thing is that this place closes later than other restaurants. Email them to make a reservation and don't be more than 10 minutes late. This place is always busy lol. We ate on a Saturday at 9 pm. #veganfood #veganrestaurants #vegannyc

OMG! The food was truly amazing! The service and ambiance were too. Such a fun and delicious experience. I'm vegan and my friend is not, but she LOVED it as much as I did. I'll definitely be back!

Hangawi was an absolute dream! The atmosphere was relaxing, the service was exceptional, and the food was fascinating. Everything is vegan and they have an entire gluten-free menu to choose from. I thoroughly enjoyed the plum tea and mini tofu ball sticks. I recently visited Planta Queen, another Asian vegan spot and it was horrendously disappointing. However, Hangawi exceeded all of my expectations. Highly recommend!

I've walked past this place many times and was intrigued to find out it's a vegetarian restaurant.Upon entering, the lighting is similarly dim, there is a lot of wood, but it's very warm and cozy.Hosts instruct you to remove your shoes upon coming in. Seating is "on the floor" but you don't have to sit cross legged, the tables are low with a recess under them for you to tuck your legs in. There are rubber slippers for you to put on if you use the restroom.I went with a friend and we shared everything we ordered. Menu was a little overwhelming, a lot of similar dishes and I might regret not ordering something under their "Mushroom" section.Sake and wine samplers were a treat, but I'm a lightweight so it was more than enough for me. We both actually liked the wine selection most, all more traditional Korean options - makgeolli, black raspberry, and a herbal wine.Vegetable fritters as an appetizer, with a sweet and tangy pineapple dipping sauce. Fried well, presented with a decorative orchid I wasn't sure we should eat.For entrees, we picked one of the dolsot dishes and rice cakes.Dolsot refers to the heavy, sizzling stone bowl it was served in. The server asked us how spicy we wanted it, adding in the sauce and stirring it up thoroughly. Wonderful combination of mushrooms, vegetables, and vegan beef. If you love crispy rice you'll be delighted as it continues to cook and toast in the bowl. Also served with kimchi -- red and white.Rice cakes (tteokbokki) were sooo good. I've bought the easy microwave version and the texture is infinitely better. Yummy chew, and it was served with vegetables in that lovely tomato-y sauce. Wish it was a tad spicier but it was so satisfying either way.Overall it was a really pleasant meal in a pretty setting. I found the dishes were not particularly spicy and we could have erred on the side of asking for more of that. Everything was cooked and presented wonderfully. Would be a really nice date spot.

Hangawi is like no other place I've been to yet in NYC with dark wood paneling and recessed tables. You're transported to a place and time reflected in the attentive service, the decor, and the food. Featuring an all-vegan, Korean-inspired modern menu (including their wines), the seasonal app/entree/dessert prix fixe is the way to go. Standouts from their winter menu include:- Kimchi hotpot and trio roots kimbap- Stuffed eggplant in chili sauce (a personal favorite, so well-cooked and flavored)- Red beans and ice cream rhapsodyReservations recommended. Only done by email with very prompt and courteous responses. For the tables, you have to lower yourself into the seats, and with the narrow space, can be challenging for those with mobility issues. Regular tables are available. You'll be asked to remove your shoes at the entrance, placed on a shelf, and laid out ready without prompting on your way out. What a way to leave a lasting impression.

The decor and atmosphere of the restaurant was unique and charming. Removing our shoes by the door made the dinner experience feel more intimate, and we really enjoyed that. The lowered table and seat design was also great. The food itself was overall terrific. The bulgogi bites and the bulgogi bibimbap were both delicious! The spicy dumplings were nice but surprisingly not spicy at all, so that could be improved.

Fabulous Korean vegetarian in Manhattan! Great ambiance, with fake floor sitting at tables. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyThis is my favorite vegetarian place in downtown Manhattan.
I have been there at least five times, the food quality is always the best, and the service is impeccable. You will need to take off shoes, so make sure to wear a cute pair of socks. I love their Mongolian hotpot, pancake combination, and the juice.
