Sitting in the Floor in My Socks
My partner and I came for the weekend mini prix fixe lunch, which is a great deal for the amount of courses and food you get! It seemed to be a popular choice with other diners as well. The starter soup was delicious and just light enough to open your appetite, and while the spicy cauliflower bites were delicious they were not spicy at all. The mushroom sizzler literally comes out sizzling but was a bit too similar to our starting soup of the day to be varied enough for me, although it was delicious. I'm not a huge fan of chocolate in general, but the chef makes sure to emphasize the chocolate flavor without it being too sweet. The plum wine, while light and yummy, also unfortunately by its nature tastes like very nice grape medicine. Seating is on an elevated platform, with holes underneath the tables to allocate room for your legs. This serves the function of a chair while also allowing you to sit on the floor. There is a coat check where you need to leave your shoes, so I strongly suggest wearing socks at the entrance. Service is prompt and reliable, and the flavors are mild and savory. Sadly, almost immediately after we left, my partner suffered some severe indigestion. We ate almost the same meal and I had no such problems. Good place for a nicer date.

…and this from a non vegan. From the friendly staff to the menu with many excellent choices, everything was first class. Upon arriving, you are asked to remove your shoes before you are seated at your table (you sit on cushions with a recessed space for your feet. No need to go over menu as it can be easily found online. Price for 2 was ~ $150 (this included 3 appetizers, 2 main dishes / hot pots, wine sampler and tea. This was our second visit and when it NYC again we will most definitely stop by for another great meal.

This serene, sumptuous restaurant is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a delicious meal. We were greeted by a warm hostess and shown to a cozy table where we sat on comfortable cushions in a soft atmosphere. We shared the vegetable dumplings, black truffle dumplings, mushroom stone bowl rice, and the tofu clay pot, and everything was so outrageously good that we were all melting into happy puddles by the end of it. The flavors are subtle and interact very well together, which provided a stupendous meal. The service is impeccably good; we weren't rushed out after we finished eating, which allowed us to linger and digest our food in peace.
Be the first to Replyoverall great food and excellent service
I was planning a trip to NYC and on tiktok someone mentioned this korean restaurant, which was vegan and/vegetarian so decided to check it out. the ambiance was really nice and the service was good in explaining the dishes. the food was incredible we started with the sushi platter which provided a variety and each had a unique flavor - my friend said it was some of the best sushi they’ve had ever. we then got a salad which was also good and for the mains we got different bibimbap — both of which were plentiful in size and flavor overall great food and excellent service
Be the first to ReplyWonderful vegetarian food
Very different restaurant. You sit on a sort of bench at floor level, and your feet extend below, underneath the table. Great vegetarian food. Lots of choices. Great service. Is a bit expensive, though.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Veggie Find in Korean Town
The Big 3s: Ambience: unique, shoeless, rushed, adjacent, cramped, fun, clean, dark, fusion Service: dexterous and deft, attentive, slightly rushed Food: exquisite and we'd return for EVERY SINGLE dish we had, both over and over
Be the first to ReplyExcellent in our respects
Tremendous in all respects. Our server was very knowledgeable, very friendly and provided excellent suggestions. The choices were not your regular, and then boom BAP or Bulgogi but we had some other types of Korean delicacies that were delicious. We had a show at Madison Square Garden so this place was a block away so it made everything perfect

Really enjoyed my meal and time at Hangawi in NYC. Great atmosphere, friendly and fast service and the food was delicious. I love the simple flavors of the food but yet so so yummy!
Be the first to ReplyLoved it. Great food. Great service.
We loved every second: from removing shoes to super fast payment. Food is great, very fast waiter. Authentic experience
Be the first to ReplyStone Cold, Stone Cold
Korean food is all the rage now and we figured what better way is there to experience it than at a Korean Vegan restaurant, so we were all in. Hangawi is very unique as upon arriving you are asked to remove your shoes and put them in bowling alley type slots and then you proceed to your table where you sit on a platform allowing your legs and feet to hang down into an opening. The wait staff all wear slippers so this is certainly come one come all! Make sure you wear socks! We did not have to use the restroom but if you do I imagine you might want to retrieve your shoes! As a vegan restaurant there is quite a large menu and it is mushroom heavy, but they are happy to make modifications as needed (while of course remaining vegan). We ordered the HanGawi Stonebowl, the GF HanGawi Stonebowl, Spicy Chili Mushrooms and ssam bab (lettuce wraps with three kinds of rice). We mostly shared the entrees between three of us and loved the food and service. The HanGawi Bowls are served hot with the veggies and then the waitstaff mixes in the rice live for you at the table when served. We enjoyed the interactions as well as all of the food. It was a fun dinner experience and we would certainly dine here again.

It was very difficult to get reservations. But we had a wonderful meal in a very nice ambience. It was a very busy place. The drinks were not as great as their descriptions. The food was very flavorful. The spicy dumplings and the sushi were our favorites. The service was quite prompt. Somewhat pricy.
Be the first to ReplyLovely environment and friendly staff
Really amazing Korean food. The environment is cozy and harmonious. And the staff is making you feel taken care of. No problem with dietary issues. A great place to celebrate a wedding anniversary at!
Be the first to ReplyNice food but…
Food is good (we took the 75$ fix price menu), but definitely overpriced for what you get. Nice idea that to remove shoes, but getting to the toilet, even with the slippers provided, is a threatening experience. Restaurant walls require an urgent painting: too dirty. So overall a negative experience.
Be the first to ReplyGreat for Vegetarians and non Vegetarians
We chose this restaurant for a pre theatre meal because 2 of our party of 4 were vegetarian. We tried a ton of different appetizers and main dishes and not one disappointed. Even our meat lovers left full and very happy with the creativity of the dishes. We had the spicy dumplings, combination pancakes, kimbap, fritters, Kimchi SB Rice, SSam Bab and the Tofu with Broccoli. All were excellent but the vegetarians in our group could not stop raving about the Tofu with Broccoli saying it was the best prepared tofu that they had ever eaten.

Outstanding restaurant, with a lovely quiet atmosphere and wonderful food. The prix fixe menu for 4 of us was wonderful, each course a delight with very attentive service and a lovely atmosphere. Highly recommended!

Everything was just outstanding! Did the Prix Fixe menu and loved all dishes. Ordinarily, when one thinks of Korean food, you think meat and heat. This place captures the Buddhist cuisine of Korea. And, they knock it out of the park on atmosphere. Imagine my surprise on a cold and rainy night to place my feet in the sunken foot well and experience the heated floor! I would have liked hotter kimchi and don’t know if it is available. Will figure it out on next visit.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious fresh vegan Korean in charming atmosphere
Lovely atmosphere: I love removing shoes and eating at a low table. The food is lovely: we had some of the seasonal roots imported from Korea. Very fresh and tasty. The menu was thoughtful and plates beautifully presented. The service was attentive and kind. In normal times the atmosphere is fantastic but in covid times it’s worth knowing that The tables are NOT spaced from one another and the space is pretty airless and tightly packed so not great for covid distancing. We were sitting right next to another party and because of the low tables the waiters have to reach down and right over you to serve.

In line with their zen-esque style, this place offers the guilt-free food with your imagination being its only flavor.
Be the first to ReplyVery tasty Korean food
I was there for a late dinner with my husband and we both found the dishes we ordered very tasty . You need to take your shoes off and you sit in a low table in cushions. The tables are very close to each other, so not a Greg’s choice if you are looking for something more private. The neighborhood is lively and full of Korean style street food. I recommend it !
Be the first to ReplyAmazing vegan food
I went with my wife. We're both vegans and Hangawi was paradise for us. There are so many options that makes it very hard to decide what to have. We start with the spicy dumplings, and for main we had avocado stone rice and the crispy mushrooms, the food was delicious. Super recommended if you are a vegan visiting New York.
Be the first to ReplyGreat & Warm Experience
This restaurant was an excellent experience !! The waiters and waitresses were so friendly, especially our waiter Jason, and the food was delicious !! Me and my family said yummy over 27 times !! Loved the food so much. The seating was so comfortable and we loved the little patterns on the cushions. The restaurant was unique in its own style.
We will most definitely visit again !!
