My husband and I had booked to return to Hanare even before it was awarded its Michelin star on June 3. We finally went this past Saturday night--and it was even better than our first time.
Hanare at the omakase sushi counter to me is more Kaiseki than just sushi, as the amazing Chef Atsushi offers a seasonal delight of amazing dishes before you even get to the actual sushi at the end. It is truly sublime--and there is nothing like it in all of Orange County. It is much more akin to 2* n/naka and the other amazing Kaiseki restaurants in Japan, especially Kyoto.
The price reflects that. At $210 per person, it isn't cheap--but the food and ingredients were truly amazing and hard to find here in the USA. This actually is the only place in the entire USA where we've been able to find A5 Wagyu that actually tastes like the spectacular A5 Wagyu in the finest restaurants in Japan. It was so good this time that we asked for an extra course for each of us--and for $49 apiece, the chef was happy to oblige. It was so darn good. Worth every penny.
Service is always friendly and enthusiastic, and the omakase bar is the most enjoyable and fun-filled place in the small restaurant. We loved it. Made some new friends yet again!
While it's pricey, it's also surprisingly relaxed and casual.
Highly recommended if you can afford the price tag!
