We recently opted for a lunch at Gotto Trattoria, a decision fuelled by expectations of an authentic Italian dining experience. The initiation of our visit was less than seamless; upon my arrival, despite the presence of numerous vacant tables, I was informed that our reservation could not be located. This slight hiccup was momentarily resolved when my wife emerged from the facilities with our children, allowing us to settle at the table for our reservation my wife had already found. The culinary journey that ensued was, regrettably, a mixed affair. The calamari failed to impress, lacking the finesse one might anticipate from such an establishment. On a more positive note, the pasta—undeniably homemade—was a delightful testament to traditional craftsmanship. However, this achievement was overshadowed by a ragu sauce so overwhelmingly infused with garlic that it masked any other potential flavours. My son’s pizza was deemed merely average, a sentiment that did little to align with our expectations of an Italian-owned venue’s capability. Service throughout our visit was, bluntly put, below par. The manager’s preoccupation with his computer at the front door appeared to take precedence over guest service, contributing to a palpable neglect. Additionally, the disappearing act performed by the other waiter only served to exacerbate our growing dissatisfaction. Culminating our experience was the decision to order decaffeinated coffees, a choice we lamented posthaste. The quality was so profoundly unsatisfactory that it left us questioning the authenticity of the beverage. In summation, Gotto Trattoria fell markedly short of the expectations one might hold for an establishment boasting Italian ownership and culinary heritage. With an abundance of dining options available, it is with regret that we must conclude our experience at Gotto Trattoria as one better forgotten. The pursuit of authentic Italian cuisine, coupled with service that cherishes its patrons, is a quest that will continue elsewhere.
