Funky Elephant Berkeley Reviews from The Last Year
I tried the KMG, mussels, and brussels sprouts via delivery.
The brussels sprouts were soft with a slight chew and they were flavorful and a bit sweet as well. I liked it but couldn't take too much in one sitting because I would've wanted to pair it with something. The broth that came with the mussels was delicious - full of flavor and was sour and spicy. I liked the rice in the KMG, and the sauce gave the chicken a great kick though the chicken was not as tender as I would've liked. Overall I liked the food and would try more in person next time.

This is a delightful little place! All the dishes we tried were so flavorful. The pad Thai is some of the best I've had. We also tried the crispy rice salad, the pork larb, and the grilled mushroom special, all of which were delicious. If you want to be punched in the face with flavor, this place is for you!
Small quirky space with decent Thai food.
Liked the party wings, the glaze was a great sweet and spicy flavor. The pad thai was average. The seating is extremely limited, they brought out a tiny table and stools to squeeze us in when we walked in.
This is a big statement.
So get ready for it y'all. This is my favorite Thai restaurant in the Bay Area. I said it and I'll say it again! The food is truly a level above your Thai spot closest to your house. Everything I've tried here has a deeper, richer, more complex flavor than the typical Thai spot. You just have to go experience for yourself. Yes, it's small so reservations are recommended and probably not good for big groups.
Thanks to a glowing review I made Funky Elephant a
Thanks to a glowing review I made Funky Elephant a destination point in Berkeley. It was raining so there was no patio seating since the patio had no overhead covering. I was surprised to find inside the restaurant that there were only two tables for two people and a big table that could squeeze in five people. The big table was occupied by people celebrating a birthday. I was seated at a table for two. It was difficult to breathe since the ventilation was poor for such a small space and the voices of people talking were amplified by the way too small dining area. I ordered pad thai with jumbo prawns. There were only two prawns and both were undercooked so they were mushy. The soy sauce based marinade was so so. It wasn't custom made sauce I had expected after reading the review. The sauce tasted as if it came from bottled sauce you can buy at any supermarket. The noodles were stuck together and hard, not fresh or silken as expected. There was one slice of lime. I asked for more slices but the waitress said there would be a charge. Without more lime, the noodles were flat and there was no pad thai sauce taste at all. There was one item that was fresh, that was the bean sprouts. It was crispy. The prawns were $23 or $21. The dish the pad thai came on had a big chip. In all my years of dining out this was only the second time that I was served food on a badly chipped plate. The first time was at a restaurant on Solano Avenue in Albany that went out of business long ago. Funky Elephant's chipped plate is worse than that other by gone restaurant. To say that the review was misleading is an understatement. The food is mediocre at best, and very overpriced for what is served. For the very first time, I am worried that a restaurant is a health hazard. The way too small dining space with poor ventilation is an invitation for virus to spread. Chipped dishes are also a hazard. There is no way to know where the chips landed and if the chips from the plate's daily use is landing in food served to customers. Since I shop at Whole Foods twice a week, I believed Funky Elephant would be my go to restaurant on a frequent basis. Wrong. To preserve my good health, I will never step inside Funky Elephant again. This is a strong NOT recommend for Funky Elephant. Maybe if they convert it into a take out only place with no indoor seating it can be saved. But then, with mediocre food at overpriced rates, I believe it will be wiser for people to spend it at restaurants that will give them their money's worth plus keep their good health intact. That will not be possible at Funky Elephant.
Long overdue review - this Funky Elephant location is in
Long overdue review - this Funky Elephant location is in the industrial area of Berkeley. This is a bit hidden away - there is plenty of street parking. Retro looking and small spot, not much seating inside, but I was able to dine outside and received my food in a timely manner. I tried their Crispy "Hodo" Tofu, Gang Rawang Beef, Pad Thai Old Skool, a side of butterfly pea jasmine rice, and a Thai iced tea. The tofu was not my favorite, as I felt like it was a bit dry with the seasoning powder, but the sweet chili sauce helps. The beef and pad Thai was delicious - very flavorful and filling. The rice was a beautiful blue color and it tasted like regular rice, but great for photos. The Thai iced tea was creamy and refreshing.
Food is in small portions.
Really narrow space, hard to sit, so not much service to say about. Overall overpriced just like many other Thai places. (No offense, but Americans over pays for some certain exotic cuisines all the time, like Thai)
Flavor's so good, it'll knock you out.
The staff is the cherry on top; all so friendly and sweet!
A small, quirky, and fun location with large portions.
My second cousins (twice removed) and I partook in a weekend lunch here and ordered the following Thai Iced Tea, Wholesome Noodles, Green Papaya salad, and Pad Thai. Thai Iced Tea was delicious and sweet. Wholesome Noodles [5/5]: ground pork soup dish with floral flavors, pork, bean sprouts, and warm broth. Comfort dish that felt like an elevated homemade meal. Green Papaya Salad [4/5]: citrusy, crunchy, savory. Papaya was a little tough to chew and a little on the salty side. Pad Thai [5/5]: came with smoky prawns atop perfectly chewy noodles. Was balanced between sweet, savory, and citrusy. Loved the array of textures with the noodles, beansprouts, and peanuts on top. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side so be sure to book if you intend to sit inside. Service is quick and hospitable.
I would give this place a 3.
5 stars for the food alone. Service was average when my friend and I walked in. The place is really small so I felt lucky that we were able to be seated immediately. What we got: party wings (4/5) -- crispy skin, juicy meat, very savory flavor, the chili jam they serve it with is delicious and I was able to tolerate the heat despite not being able to handle a lot of spicy food motherland curry (3/5) -- red curry with fish, vermicelli, and herbs...I wish there were more curry flavor but I got mostly coconut...I also wish more fish came with the dish, otherwise it is mostly a bowl of noodles and bean sprouts KMG #2 (4/5) -- pretty basic poached chicken thigh with skin over garlic ginger rice (the rice was amazing) and some super pungent sauce with soy, garlic, chili, etc. unsweetened mango tea (3/5) -- really refreshing given what we ordered but I would have liked stronger mango flavor Not sure if I would come back here, especially since there are so many other Thai places around the Bay and options in Berkeley.

I have some reservations coming up tomorrow that have gotten lots of views but haven’t sold yet. I haven’t made a sale yet since I just joined this week. I keep lowering the price, but am worried they won’t sell. How long did it take you to sell your first reservations? And did you have success being reimbursed by AT for no-show or cancellation fees? Just looking for a little reassurance. Thanks!

You should probably cancel prior to the cancellation date per the cancellation policy. I would imagine you would only get reimbursed for a sold listing if you happen to be charged?

My first sale took about a week. But as the other commenter said stay ontop of your cancellation windows. There’s no reimbursement for those so make sure you cancel in time then just try again.
