What a Great Time!
My cousins and I who dont get to see each often, all met up before Blue Man group since I was in town from Colorado. What a great time. Service was banging, food was delicious, love the open kitchen theme. We made reservations and they did check our vaccination cards but allowed a negative test result, which is all over in Chicago, WHOOT WHOOT! No one had any complaints. I wish we got more Ricotta dumplings tho.

We (my wife and I) visited Funkenhausen on a mid July Saturday evening, for an outdoor dinner. It was our first visit. Ambiance: We made reservations via OpenTable, and selected "outdoor" seats. As they are located along busy Chicago Ave, the patio was simply picnic benches (for 4 people) and metal tables and chairs (for 2). Not much to speak of outside. The inside featured lots of wood, and a pretty energetic sound level. Food: As Funkenhausen calls itself a "modern beer hall" we of course had to select a beer. We went with the Pfungstadter Weizen beer, which was served in a boot-shaped glass. This turned out to be an excellent choice for a nice summer evening. A "pro tip" for drinking out of the boot...point the toe of the boot sideways rather than towards you or away from you, otherwise you get a splash of suds. The "Big Garlicky Pretzel" apperitizer was definitely big, though not particularly garlicky I thought. Most of the salt on top of the pretzel wound up on the plate or our fingers as we tore into it. Both dipping sauces were tasty. The wood grilled swordfish was very good, accompanied by a sauce and variety of crisped and raw vegetables. The pork loin schnitzel was massive, nearly covering the entire plate, although pounded quite thin (but still too much to finish for us that night). We really enjoyed the sauce and salad on top. Service: Service was prompt. The pretzel came to our table immediately. Both entrees also arrived very quickly. If we hadn't decided to have a second round of beers, we would have been in and out in less than an hour. Overall, a very satisfactory visit...I suspect the indoor dining is a better option than outside (just not yet for us during these Covid times).

We're dining out less often these days, so expectations are high each time we do go. Based on prior visits, we expected to really enjoy our meal, especially the Berkshire pork schnitzel. As before, street parking was easy to find close by. That made us early but our table was ready, so they seated us right away at a lovely 2-top right by the big front windows. Tables are spaced well-apart and we noticed several parties of 3 or 4 eating at their outside tables along Chicago Ave. They gave us paper menus tho we could have used our phones to access it with a QR code. We consulted the waiter on a couple items; he did not seem concerned to be chatting with us. We ordered. Ambience is the same, cordial, hospitable, lively and fun. At 50% capacity, the decibel level is much better. Food came promptly. So far so good. But here's the sad part: while the Piggy Plate met our expectations, the schnitzel was overcooked and so dry it was hard to cut. The charred lemon and gribiche sauce did little to compensate for this. What a disappointment, considering how excellent it has been whenever we've had it before! The pork shoulder shreds in the apple and cabbage salad were likewise overcooked and tough. Blueberry cobbler with a lemon curd daub alongside was good. All in all, not up to snuff. The bill, with tax but before tip, was about $120.

The food was good.really interesting flavors. The surf n turf and quail excellent. They need to turn the volume down on the music and who on earth would put the speakers on the side of the restaurant opposite the bar where one might expect and want more”noise”? Servers were excellent and very attentive. A little off the beaten path but bus stop within 100 feet.

i have heard good things about Funkenhausen and finally booked a table there around Christmas time. The interior is nothing Bavarianesque, but the menu certainly reflects it. There were a lot of things to try that looked good but we settled on the pretzel to start...we nibbled on it as we decided our menu...nice salty and soft inside and it comes with 2 sauces to dip in but the pimento far surpassed the other more bland sauce. We started off with the Haus salad which in itself was delicious..the radishes and the poached sliced pears and pickled red onions MMMMMMM, we then had the surfenturf which was the scallop and pork belly dish with kraut puree and stonefruit..delish and then the ricotta dumpling...so good. We took home the christmas cookie dessert which was eaten in the hotel and was very good....gingerbread and shortbread cookies..yummy...All of this experience wouldn't have been the same without our waiter who was dressed in lederhosen of sorts and made the night fun

We had a family Sunday brunch and it was great. The neighborhood was not too congested so there was street parking available. The place seems shiny and new. The staff was friendly. There was a good assortment of drinks and cocktails for those of us who like that. A good thing for us was that it attracted a good crowd and was not overly loud.

When I think of food Southern cuisine gets a 2 thumbs up and German...well, meh. But this place gave me all the feels. Service was excellent!!!!! The oysters were delicate and fried-say what?!?! The chicken was one of the tastier dishes which says a lot because other than the Publican chicken and Thomas Keller’s, chicken can be a boring dish. The wine list leaned into Austria, different for Chicago in a good way. Honestly, everything was delish- quail, broccolini, etc. The biggest attraction for me was the attention to detail in the veggies. A+ Oh and the dessert was Southern Hummingbird cake riff. Yes please.
