Wonderful ambiance + delicious (wish I could eat here every day) meal! Family style dining experience.
Visited the restaurant based on Trip Advisor rankings and it was stellar! If we lived here, we would be regulars for sure. The best Chinese food. Mouth watering just thinking about it. Honey Walnut Prawns are a must have. The garlic chili green beans rock. Orange chicken was delectable. And they even catered to our three year old and made “plain” noodles. We are in town for a week and may go back again before we leave. It’s that amazing. Just go and see for yourself!

They knew about gluten-free and that is important to us. We were glad we had a reservation to dine here after seeing Frank Fat on the Sacramento historical timeline in a nearby pedestrian underneath. They opened at 4:30 on Sunday and were instantly busy.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food, excellent service
Had a great experience here! Arrived 15 minutes before they opened, but they allowed us to sit inside with air conditioning (they have valet parking available right outside for $7.) We were in a rush with a flight to catch, but they got us our delicious food in a jiffy and even brought out an extra slice of banana cream pie on the house. The food was wonderful, but the service was excellent and we really felt taken care of. Would definitely return here next time we’re in town!
Be the first to ReplyGood Chinese Food
Frank Fat is one of my favorite restaurants in Sacramento. It’s been years since I had gone. I want with friends Thursday. We had Martinez to start. We ordered so much. Everything was so good. Love the banana cream pie. Had a wonderful time. Will be back.
Be the first to ReplyAlmost As Good As It Was Years Ago
Years ago my spouse and I used to take day trips from SF to Sacramento and ate at Frank Fat's several times; we always enjoyed it. This visit wasn't quite as good but still enjoyable. Our server was very attentive and met every request very quickly. The food was good, but not exceptional. We started with the combination appetizer platter. The Yu Kwok dumplings were interesting, with a very meaty filling. The calamari, which were the large, thick cuttlefish, were fairly greasy and had too much batter. The potstickers were very good; the filling was delicious. Spring rolls were tasty and only slightly greasy.
For our main course we had the seafood pot, which contained prawns, clams, scallops, calamari, and fried tofu, the last of which was really delicious. The black bean sauce was tasty, and they kindly substituted Cheese broccoli for the generic type. The calamari was scored but still rubbery, which is to be expected with the type I described above. We had white rice, which was extra. I really don't like having to pay for rice or tea in a Chinese restaurant. I guess I'm set in my ways.
The ambience here is great; it's a real Sacramento institution and has a state capitol town vibe that makes a meal here a worthwhile experience overall.
Fantastic food & service!
We were passing through the city for a night and had high hopes for this place since we found it had good reviews and many awards. It more than exceeded our expectations, it is the best Chinese style food we’ve ever had combined with the best service we’ve encountered in a long time! The fixed price menu is also a great value, with some of the best items on the menu in generous portions. Don’t skip dessert either! We were fighting for the leftovers the next day. Would definitely recommend to anyone in the area.

Had dinner with my wife. Had to get out and sit in a restaurant. Tired of eating at home or ordering out. First visit to Frank Fats since the COVID lockdown. We’ve frequented the place many times over the course of over 50 years.
Ordered dinner; Hong Kong style chow mein, honey walnut shrimp and Buddha’s delight (vegetable dish). Unfortunatly, they sold out on the mandarin duck, my favorite. Every dish was prepared to perfection. Delicious does not say enough. Lina Fat would be so proud of her kitchen staff,
Our server, Heather, made our dinner special. She really took care of us. One of the best servers in town. She really shows that she cares for her customers.
We really enjoyed our dinner. You have to try this place. I’ll return soon for the mandarin duck.
Special shout to Eddie Fong a cook at the restaurant,
Disappointed with my favorite Chinese Restaurant in Sacramento
I’ve been coming here for years and supporting this place during the pandemic, unfortunately I need to make this review due to bad experience I had from my last visit. After calling for a to go order and told me to come and pick it up, I waited for another 40 mins for my food that I order. I follow up several times and told me it will be ready in few minutes, After waiting 20 mins I follow up three times and the receptionist have no clue what happen to my order, told me that it will be ready soon, went back again inside to follow up and Patrick the manager was the one at the door, So i mention that i’m still waiting for my food, he went back at the kitchen and came back telling me that my order was given to others, but instead of apologizing because i’m waiting for a while, all he said is his making sure that I will get a fresh one, which I’m guessing the food they serve should be fresh whenever you order? while waiting for my food, the receptionist received a complain from Martha as per the receptionist who received the food that I order and complain about it. 20 mins passed the manager bring my food and didn’t even say sorry for waiting and for the mistake and just hand over me the food. I arrive home the my two order of potstickers is over cook and some are burnt. This place is my favorite place in Sacramento for Chinese and it’s such a disappointment to have this experience, big failure to the management. I’m still coming back because I love the food here but I hope they would do something to avoid this kind of problem again.

They say they have been in business here since 1939, and I believe them - its not easy to do in the restaurant business but they have the formula - great food - great service at reasonable prices in a classic location. We were four family members who dropped in on a Thursday evening - and I do reccomend you make a reservation - and we had a delightful family style dinner sharing 3 entrees - General Tao's chicken, Honey Walnut Prawns, Orange Chicken and a bowl of the steamed brown rice. It was marvelous and the service was impeccable. This is a local treasure and it lives up to its reputation - 5 thumbs up.
Be the first to Replybanana cream pie
I had one slice of Frank's banana cream pie back in 1987, before I moved to Washington State, and still remember it. It was unforgettably good. Rich, creamy and very banana. Try it, I think you'll create a memory.

This legendary eatery never fails to impress. The food is so fresh and delicious with welcoming staff and energy filled surroundings.

Ate here on a busy Saturday night. Had the pot stickers and honey walnut prawns. Both of which were outstanding. Service even though they were busy was great as well.
Be the first to ReplyFood is very fresh with quality ingredients
We are always searching for fantastic Chinese restaurants while in Sacramento. We ordered orange chicken, house chow fun, and house chow mien. The orange chicken had good flavor, but did not come with rice and each person's small bowl cost $3.00. The two noodles dishes had good quality vegetables and meats, but not outstanding flavors. Any time I am adding soy sauce to Chinese food in a restaurant, flavor is minimal. I remember Frank Fat's restaurants in Old Sacramento many years ago and the flavors popped out. These were average. The thing that really stood out, which most Chinese restaurants don't serve, was the banana cream pie. The pie was full of bananas and the crust was absolutely the flakiest pie crust I have ever eaten. I never even knew a pie crust could be so delectable because so many pies elsewhere are baked way ahead of time and frozen and then the crust becomes something it was never meant to be. I understand their chocolate cream pie is great too. Being right downtown, we were so lucky to find a parking spot right on the street around the corner. I usually look for restaurants with lots of parking, but family wanted to try this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyNot impressed!
Not impressed! I went to this restaurant over 30 years ago and it was great. I took my son here tonight and it was not very good. The orange chicken was not hot and it did not have an appealing appetizing look to it. The fried rice we ordered was bland and the veggies looked like frozen not fresh. The seat at our booth had ripped vinyl. the ambience was just not there. I did appreciate the parking and I don’t mind paying 7.00 for parking that’s pretty standard downtown. So I know my bill with parking was 60.00 and I’m just so disappointed. I don’t think I will ever go back here. My son did not even eat half of the orange chicken and he normally would eat the entire serving when we frequent other Chinese restaurants.
