Tasty small dishes
Every time we visit NYC, we go to Estela (need to reserve in advance, it’s relatively small). It offers small, tasty dishes like tuna tartare, scallops, black rice
Be the first to ReplyMixed, Very Mixed...
We were very excited to finally dine in this restaurant because its reputation, we came out a bit flat as the experience was definitely mixed. The staff was fantastic, they were kind and courteous, gave us great suggestions on their food and drink, and helped those ones of us have food allergies to avoid those dishes they should not eat. The ambiance is not as expected, very much like a neighborhood restaurant, informal, a bit crowded, but not very noisy. The white napkins left a lot of lint on dark clothing, a disappointment. But the biggest surprise was the lackluster of plating. The combination of ingredients for each dish were genius, but the food came out in such flat manner, the artistry of taste was not supported by the appearances. We were hoping that we might have a story to tell afterward, but I am not so sure that we have gotten that. A few dishes were fantastic, tasted wonderfully and beautiful to look at. I strongly recommend seeking advice from the wait staff before you order. This one could have been a total disappointment but the wait staff really guided us through it and we still enjoyed it.

Loved this restaurant! Every dish was delicious and surprising. The small plates allow lots of tasting even for two people. *Spoiler alert* - if you keep reading this review the surprises won't be quite as surprising... We started with the scallops with brown butter and golden potatoes which was presented as a perfect glossy hemisphere of... something. It turn out the hemisphere was a hyper-smooth potato puree that covered fairly raw scallops finished as a kind of ceviche in light lemon juice. The interplay of rich brown butter and bright lemon was a unique and yummy. Next up was the endive with walnuts, anchovy, and ubriaco rosso that continued the "surprise" theme. The again lemony endive completely covered the walnuts and 'chovies so that it initially looked like a plate of endive leaves. The bottom layer was rich and crunchy so that a bite would combine with the endive for a welcome and juicy "pop" in one's mouth. Our third dish was the star of the evening: fried arroz negro, squid, and romesco. This is essentially the bottom crunchy part of properly cooked paella using black rice. Wow - filling, satisfying, tremendously delicious. If you like paella don't skip this one. Our entrée was Berkshire pork with market greens and black truffles. A satisfying and filling end to a great meal. Our server was charming, knowledgeable about both the dishes and the right wine(s) to pair with and efficient. You could not ask for better service. A little difficult to find, you should make the effort to go to Estela. We're glad we did. Two thumbs up.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing Experience at Estela – A Michelin Star Letdown
Having explored numerous Michelin Star establishments across Europe and the US, our visit to Estela left us thoroughly disappointed. From the lackluster seating arrangement to the absence of detailed food explanations, our expectations were not met. The culinary journey began with oysters that failed to impress, lacking the expected finesse. The tuna dish, while decent, fell short of the exceptional standards we've come to anticipate from Michelin Star venues. The rice negro, unfortunately, suffered from excessive saltiness, as did the venison, making both dishes unremarkable. Adding to the dismay was the underwhelming presentation, a departure from the meticulous artistry typical of Michelin Star restaurants. This experience, regrettably, stands out as one of the most subpar encounters we've had in such esteemed establishments. In conclusion, we cannot recommend Estela based on our disappointing visit, questioning how it acquired a Michelin Star in the first place. It is a stark contrast to the culinary excellence we've encountered elsewhere, leaving us perplexed and dissatisfied.
Be the first to ReplyReally well executed Modern Italian
Food and service were terrific. Loved the endive dish (remarkable), the celery dish (incredible) but the tuna carpaccio was the best I've ever had. My wife loved the crab dish. Typical of upscaled modern Italian cooking, the food is very inventive using few ingredients, but caring about the quality of each of the ingredients. Our server, Eric, was attentive. High marks!!!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food with unbearable noise level
I was excited to try this place based on recommendations from foodie friends in the business. The food is fantastic, very shareable, the service varies from great to indifferent (our server who appeared not to want to be there). Food came very slowly (read 45 minutes) between shared dishes. The noise level is almost not compatible with any conversation and later on the music was turned on which basically reduced the dialogue to smiles. Clearly they are riding on success and being hip to pack the restaurant. Entrance very difficult to find. The food is a 5 but the experience a 3 due to noise level and our server (other servers appeared much more engaged).

This restaurant was recommended to us as having delicious and innovative new American cuisine. We found it to be innovative but not consistently delicious. We were encouraged to order 4-6 small plates for the 2 of us. The sliced summer squash in miso sauce was delightful but the quantity was overwhelming. The ricotta ravioli were in fact dumplings in a broth but they were delicious. Our most extravagant choice was the lobster with fava beans and woodears. The lobster tail was very small( 2-3 bites) and came with 4 beans and woodear mushrooms that were much like eating rubber.

The establishment which I think is in an apartment building is small and loud. Not a great first date place since you can’t hear anything but the food was spectacular! Dined alone at the bar and had their bestsellers — the ricotta dumplings, the fried squid ink rice (similar to a paella but better, in my opinion), the scallops with sea urchin and dates, and the lychee sorbet with whipped yogurt for dessert. It sounds like a lot but if you go hungry, it’s doable. The price point is fair and they have a great bar. The Michelin star so well deserved. Another trip back is warranted.

Don't arrive early otherwise you will have to stay in the hallway waiting. The restaurant is super small. They only have small menu and they just pump out the food pretty fast. I felt rushed. Everything was so hectic. I did not like the experience. I would not recommend it to anyone!
Be the first to ReplyNice experience, can improve
Food and drinks were honestly amazing, kitchen takes care of the dishes thoroughly, however our waitress was not happy that our order was not as big as she expected, also we constantly needed to ask for more water as we didn't get a bottle, I think the place is nice for a romantic dinner but a lot to improve with the sevice in order to be considered one of the top restaurants in the world
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, not so great experience
The less then stellar rating is really about the ambience and the service, not the food. The place is small, ver small, and the tables are quite close. Not unexpected for a place like this. The noise level, though, is so high that it’s distracting. Maybe more soft, sound absorbing surfaces would help? Anyway, the food is quite good, but the service and the ways dishes are brought out so quickly right on top of each other makes for a very rushed experience. I get that you want to turn tables on a Friday night, but rushed service really impacts the overall experience and makes it difficult to fully appreciate and enjoy the food.

Fantastic in all ways. Excellent food (all dishes!) nice and attentive service, good location. Highly recommended! Would love to come again.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and experience
Wonderful dining experience with creative dishes. Not cheap but worth the money. Only point of criticism that the place is tiny and feels a little bit cramped. Noise level also high. Nevertheless highly recommend for a special occasion.
Be the first to ReplyOVERPRICED and soulless
We were very disappointed with this restaurant. Everything starts with a cold welcome, you have to wait out, in the corridor because your table is not ready. The dishes are tiny, banal and overpriced. The table is tiny and you are stuck between a wall and the other customers. The waiter is neither smiling nor friendly... A real disappointment! I really don't recommend...
Be the first to ReplyDelicious start to finish
The stars of the show here are definitely the dishes - in our case, 12 different ones. We had a party of 4 and were guided to about 9 dishes as the right volume of food to share among us - they then threw is an extra compliments of the chef and we tried 2 desserts. I can honestly say every single one of them was both delicious and extremely interesting - nothing "plain" or "standard" here. Everything had a unique combination of flavors, an interesting twist, some fun for the taste buds and a beautiful plating. We debated after dinner and could not come up with a definitive "favorite" despite several contenders. Outside of the food, we found the rest of the experience lovely as well. I saw comments in other reviews about poor service, being rushed, or not being provided clean plates between courses - we saw none of that. The staff was terrific, pleasant and worked extremely seamlessly across the team. They probably replaced our plates and silverware close to a half a dozen times through the night, kept our wine glasses full and never rushed us at all (plates came out in a smart order and at a sensible pace). The comments about the restaurant being loud are accurate, but I didn't see that as a "negative" but more as consistent with the setting. If you are expecting an elegant, quite, refined atmosphere (which many might assume is the case in a Michelin star restaurant), this is not it. It is quite small / cozy and quite plain in decor with people in every seat (and, as a result, a loud buzz of conversations around you at all times). But, at least for us, that gave it a casual warmth and was a great environment to enjoy the fabulous food. If you need hushed silence and a white tablecloth for your tastebuds to work, this isn't the place for you.

The food was incredible. I would recommend the oysters, endive salad, beef tartare was amazing and the duck which was incredible. The service was spot on. They were attentive without being pushy. The only reason I wouldn’t give it 5 stars is the noise level. We were there on a Thursday night early 6:30. The noise just got worse and worse as the evening progressed. It definitely took away from such a special meal and I would probably not return because of that.
Be the first to ReplyFood good, experience not so much
Food was delicious. It was meant to really be savoured, enjoyed. Unfortunately the experience was really ruined by how much the staff rushed the meal. Plates were meant to be enjoyed one by one. We'd not even finished one plate before they'd brought the next one. Also, it seemed strange that our plates weren't changed once during the meal causing the flavours from very different dishes to mix together. Also the sommelier absolutely did not add any value to the wine choice. They should really recommend directly next to each dish on the menu. Perhaps even offer a wine flight to accompany one's meal.
Be the first to ReplyNever get a disappointed meal here
Each time to visit NY, this is more or less my staple visit. The food is always good and never disappointed in the past 4 visits in 10 years.

The food was amazing, It was unconventional but really good. The servers were so nice and the ambiance was perfect. I recommend to go to this restaurant any time you are in nyc.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome
Really amazing restaurant. Small, packed, buzzing with wonderful knowledgeable and friendly service. The Som was especially good with a veritable tour of interesting new natural wines. But the food, it is out of this world. Alternately salty and fiery oysters with Yuzu mignonette, the subtlest cuttlefish and celeriac, endive, walnut and a resonant cheese, red snapper that warms the soul and ricotta and mushroom dumplings. I’m salivating just thinking about it again. This is the sort of place that makes you fall in love with food again.

Small plates allow you to experience nuanced flavor profiles. Our favorite plates were the Ricotta Dumplings; Scallops with Squash Blossoms; pork with seaweed, potatoes, and clams. The combined flavors were superb; panna cotta.
Be the first to ReplyDecent food, mediocre service
It's always hard to pick the right rating for a restaurant. I think if it's purely on food, I would've given it a 4.
As others have commented, the restaurant is small and tables are packed close to each other. When we arrived at 5:40, the restaurant was wide open. However, the hostess sat us right next to another table at the corner by the POS terminal. The space was so tight that I had to move the table in order to get in. With Covid, you would think they would try to space people out if possible.
I asked the hostess if it was possible to get a different table. I was referred to another woman who told me the restaurant was full and there were no alternative tables available. She did come back about 5 mins later offered me to sit at the bar if I wanted.
However the restaurant was wide open for the next hour including multiple two person tables. You would think it would be easy to move us to a different table until the next reservation arrives. Even when we left 1.5 hour later, there were still 3 tables that had sat empty the entire time.
Some things are outside of their control, however, I believe this is totally avoidable. They could have planned seating better. At minimum, when asked, show a bit of creativity and flexibility.
I had also noted on reservation that this is for a birthday, however, there was no mention of it either by the hostess or the waiter. There wasn't even a good bye as we left. This shows you the attitude of this restaurant.
In terms of food, it was quite good. However, it's not quite on par with some of the other restaurants with 1 Michelin Star. It was a bit on the salty side as others have mentioned.
The cocktails are not cheap but unfortunately the flavor and balance wasn't quite right.
Overall, it's a miss for me. It's not a restaurant I would go out of way to experience.
Avoid if you have dietary restrictions
The restaurant has excellent food. No doubt. Presentation is beautiful. Ambience is excellent.
The most important thing for my dining experience is that I not get sick from the food. Unfortunately the restaurant’s carelessness when it comes to dietary restrictions needs to be mentioned. The waiter was alerted early on that I have a gluten intolerance. He identified the dishes I could eat, including one that could be modified. We ordered those. However, the wrong dish was brought, and it was not immediately clear, when I started eating it. I asked, and yes, it contained gluten. They apologized several times and removed the dish from the bill. That was it. There was no other compensation provided.
I would certainly not return. Any restaurant - Michelin star or not - needs better processes to ensure this doesn’t happen. Diners deserve better from any restaurant. There is no excuse.
If you don’t have dietary restrictions, I might try it out. You would certainly have a better experience than I did.
one of my top three restaurants of my life
We were in New York for my 60th birthday celebrations arranged by clever hubby at short notice and managed to grab the last table at this amazing restaurant, recommended by a Frenchman who runs one of the best restaurants in our own home town. He certainly knows his stuff! We were sat in a little vestibule where we could people watch to our hearts content, and were given the night of our lives as the sommelier, waitress and staff looked after us so well. Apart from the service which was outstanding, the food was to die for, with the combination of flavours leaving us in awe. The tapas style of eating allowed us to taste as many dishes as we could, and we became world class critics of what worked and what didn't, not that much didn't! Have been recommending this to everyone we have met since as a must do when visiting New York
Be the first to ReplyI had been here twice before
I had been here twice before pre-covid and the food was amazing both times. Wanted to revisit since they got their Michelin Star. Everything was lovely. Service was excellent, food was as good as I remembered (endives and ricotta dumplings two high points). Loved every minute and their covid protocols were very good.
