Amazing food in Cool Fairfield Restaurant.
Fantastic sophisticated meal at Esh last night. Easily the best food in the town. Excellent service and friendly atmosphere. Interesting options abound. We had three messez for $25 which were outstanding and came with an amazing fresh cooked read. Followed it up with Felafel. Fried beautifully and served in a little brown container a la chinese food takeout. Incredibly tasty. My wife had the chicken which was inventive and I had Skirt steak wagu. Tender and large enough to take half home. For dessert—cheese cake and ice cream including a delicious lavender flavored scoop. My only complaint was that although the dining room is elegant and interesting the windows look out on parking lots and roads. It add curtains. Well done

The full package. Food’s amazing, especially the flatbread. Tried the feta one and it was the highlight of the night. Also tried the cauliflower, delicious mix of red & white sauces and perfectly cooked. The halibut with gnocchi was delicious too. Flavor heavy, but everything well orchestrated. And finally, the Grandma Cake was great too. I’m not big in sweets, but this one really got me. Great atmosphere - decoration, music selection and friendly staff.

We tried to get a reservation in December--the first available Friday or Saturday reservation was in February--Wow, popular place! Esh is tucked away in an apartment complex of I-95 in Fairfield--once you find it, there's lots of delicious inside. The dining room is chic, the staff is friendly and helpful, the menu has lots to offer. Be warned, the prices are above average for Fairfield--this was a splurge for our modest budget. Be sure to get one of the dips--accompanied by a flavorful bread (with pickled veggies and olives) this is a steal here for $9.00. For our small plates, we did the duck wings (the hit of the night), the octopus (very good) and the basket of falafel (good). We also ordered the Angus shawarma (very large portion and tasty) and the bone-in short rib (also very good). The three of us could barely finish any of the dishes and left with a nice take-out bag. Lots and lots of creativity and flavor in all of the dishes. Again note, this is on the pricey side. The least expensive glass of wine here is $18.00. The entrees are $40-$55 and most of the sharables are in the mid $20's. And be advised to make your reservation SEVERAL weeks early to be sure to get a spot.

We stopped in for dinner and really enjoyed the experience and food. We did not have a reservation but since we got there early we sat at a communal table which was just fine. The restaurant was really nicely decorated with a large communal table where at least about 12 could sit at. In addition there had a beautiful bar area when one could also dine at. It was as very nice vibe. For our meal we decided to have several plates to share. We started with the burrata which was excellent, served with some cured meat slices and nuts. Really good! We also ordered the octopus and the Wagyu Bao buns. The buns were packed with flavor, I love them. Top top everything off we had an order of the Brussel sprouts. For dessert we had the date sponge cake. It was the perfect way to end the night.

This is my fourth time visiting, and I’ll start by saying that I love this restaurant and have recommended it heartily. Today’s comments are because, at last night’s visit, I felt that the experience had slipped, and I believe it’s because the place has become so popular, with long waiting lists and lots of buzz. Our starters were delicious, particularly the roasted cauliflower and spicy feta dip. But two of our three entrees were just embarrassing. I ordered the lamb tenderloin, which I’ve had before. At $45, the meat, which is supposed to be medium rare and tender, was overcooked and tough — and a meager portion to boot. My son’s chicken entree was so small that he finished the meat in four bites, and my husband gave him half of his own meal. I don’t mind paying up for a nice dinner, and I’ve enjoyed my experiences here in the past, so this commentary is intended as a wake-up call to the kitchen. As much as I enjoy the dazzling dining room and open kitchen theater, I’m coming here for the food, and, sadly, I won’t be rushing back. My advice: stick to the apps and avoid the entrées.

What happens when you mix an overhyped restaurant with good, but not exceptional, food and arrogant gen z kids at the front who don’t seem bothered by the fact that you made a reservation which has not been honored for over 30 minutes? You have Esh. I’ve gone here 4 times since it opened. The 30 minute wait means this will be my last. And, to the manager who told me that this happens all the time in NYC, no it doesn’t. A restaurant that thrives on dinner reservations for guests with important business companions does not make them wait 30 minutes. It at leasts would offer them the option of starting at the bar and continuing in the main dining room. That’s the way it’s done in NYC, London and even New Delhi. (Esh is in Fairfield) The actual wait staff in the dining room is exceptional, each and every time. The food delivery time in the dining room (not the bar) is consistently timely if not fast. And, the food can be pretty good, which obviously is the draw. Sea Bass is spicy and flavorful. The lamb is tender and inviting. The shwarma is mediocre and overdone. The hummus is fine, but, it’s not Tel Aviv, sorry. And, the flatbread, well, it’s flatbread, not pita, and it’s not much better than freezer bread that you put on your grill. Feel free to go once and try it out. But, expect to be treated poorly at the entrance desk despite the NYC prices.

I will start with the main part of this review- definitely GO! I don’t give out 5 stars easily but ESH deserves it. What a great restaurant! The ambiance, food and the service are top notch. The design and ambiance is perfect. We ordered something from every part of the menu and overall they were all fabulous. The only dish that could use some help was the cauliflower head app which was mushy and sauce had bland tasteless flavor. Note- portions are quite substantial and great value . So be careful don’t over order like we did or a lot will be going home as leftovers . ESH just open recently and word is traveling fast so MAKE SURE to make a reservation way in advance (weeks!) because it is getting very hard to get a reservation . Parking is easy with a garage right next door and they will validate.

Very good fusion of Greek, Israeli, North African and Lebanese dishes, incorporating a NY vibe in Fairfield, CT. Our server, Brian, forewarned us that portions are designed for sharing and we enjoyed a wonderful mix of house flatbread that comes with olive oil and pickled cabbage and carrots, a lamb flatbread with tahini and spices, grilled octopus served with roasted potatoes and avocado, Moroccan cigars stuffed with braised short rib (a little greasy as it’s fried in beef fat), shrimp vermicelli (also fried in the beef fat), and Australian wagyu shawarma. A crisp Greek white wine with hints of apple and pear added the right balance to the exotic herbs and zataar-laced flavors. Of note, the flour for the flatbread is milled on a farm in Emilia-Romagna that dates to the 14th century. This restaurant has only been open for just over a month but it’s going to be a hit for the local foodie scene. With good food, a beefed up staff, cool atmosphere and a steady stream of Mediterranean inspired music pumping through the restaurant, all signs point to a great future.
Be the first to ReplyModern, stylish venue, with excellent food and service
We came here for dinner tonight, with friends. I was so impressed that I felt like writing this review while the experience was fresh in my mind. First impressions - sleek, modern place with a welcoming atmosphere and a reasonable noise level (some other local restaurants can be loud). We were seated promptly, and our server was attentive and friendly. Food was excellent. I had crispy duck wings as a starter, followed by Australian Wagyu Shawarma. Portions were generous, and it looks like Shawarma is on the menu for tomorrow's lunch. My wife started with Lahma Joun (Taboon flatbread with minced lamb) which she shared with our friends, and Taboon Baked Mussels. As it happens, several of the mussels failed to open. My wife mentioned this to our server, and he not only comped her entrée, but also added a complimentary dessert. A very nice gesture. Wine by the glass included a Turkish red, which I chose, and a Greek white, which was chosen by my wife. It's always fun to try unusual wines. Both pretty decent table wines, and reasonably priced. The staff were very attentive, but not excessively so. A good balance. Some other observations - the restaurant is on the ground floor of of an apartment block which also contains the parking garage for Fairfield Metro station. Parking is free - just show your ticket to the Maitre d', and he'll validate it. All in all, a very positive experience.
