Ensenada Brooklyn Reviews from The Last Year
So good, great ceviche and great Rita's.
Amazing service worth the drive from manhattan.

Ensenada is a vibey Mexican seafood spot in South Williamsburg that partially turns into a club at night. The menus highlight mezcal and seafood, two of my favorite things. Though we came here as a party of two and still had a great time, I'd say Ensenada is more of a group spot, as I noticed there were more large parties than small ones. Service is excellent, food is paced well, no notes there. Overall, a really fun evening with delicious food and drink, with the added bonus of basement jams and dancing after hours. We came here at around 8:45 on a Saturday night. We had some train issues on the way and texted the restaurant, and they were kind enough to shift our once-earlier reservation time. The space itself is fairly small, with larger tables lining the perimeter of the space and a few high-top tables for pairs in the center. There's also some seating at the majestic bar, which is designed and lit beautifully. We were at one of the high-top tables which was initially concerning because we didn't know how the table could fit our many courses, but they paced out our dishes such that we didn't have any issues. As a mezcal lover, I was overwhelmed with excitement when I saw the cocktail menu. I started with the El Casino (condesa gin, lillet, mal bien zacate limon, guindilla pepper), which is an expertly crafted martini/vesper variation that's so smooth it's dangerous. Highly recommend if you're even sort of into martinis. My other go-to aside from a martini is a negroni, so I had to try the Mezcal White Negroni (mezcal espadin, lillet, suze, lemon), which was also delicious. My husband got the Seasonal Paloma with mezcal and then the Dios Mio (hoja santa infused mezcal, dark rum, cointreau, avocado pit orgeat, lemon, basil oil), both of which were delicious but the second was a true masterpiece of a drink. Food-wise, we decided to get a good sampling of the menu, though with two of us were not able to get the famous whole fish, as it would've meant sacrificing some of the other dishes. Overall, the food is and bright, with clean and bold flavors and plenty of spice. Eats, below: Tostada de atun w/ guacamole, salsa macha, plum sesame seeds: A+ Hot out of the gate was this seriously delicious and beautifully presented tostada, our favorite dish of the night. Just a perfect and complete bite with all the right textures and flavors. Ceviche Tradicional w/ pescado: A- This was very good just less exciting than the other dishes. We had ordered so much fish that after a while we just became less interested in this than the other stuff, but it was still enjoyable. Ensalada Cesar w/ chicories, white anchovy dressing, grapefruit, parmesan, sourdough breadcrumbs: A We felt like we needed some veggies so we opted for the one veggie dish on the menu (other than the cucumber aguachile). We thoroughly enjoyed it and gobbled it up quickly. I love a Cesar with seasonal produce. I'm not usually a big fan of citrus in general (just doesn't do it for me) but for whatever reason I loved the grapefruit in this salad. Aguachile amarillo w/ camaron (shrimp), aji amarillo, turmeric, lemongrass, cucumber, radish, avocado: A This one was the medium spicy option of the aguachiles, a little too spicy for my husband but he was able to enjoy some of it. The flavor combo here is one of my favorite savory things and it paired nicely with the shrimp. Taco de pescado w/ chipotle aioli, slaw, pico de gallo: A+ Granted I only had one small bite of this because it was just an order of one small taco for my husband, but that one bite was pretty magical. Definitely one of the best fish tacos I've ever had. Few things are more satisfying than a fish taco with chipotle aioli.
While the food was good, I would not go back to eat here.
Some aspects of the service made the otherwise good restaurant bad. From the cake cutting charge (that NO ONE told us about), to the 22% compulsary tip for a group of 6 and the shrfharge for a debit/credit payment, it felt like the restaurant just wanted us to spend more money. After a lengthy order the waitress suggested we get the biggest (and most expensive) thing on the menu becaude it wasn't enough food. Thankfully we waited, as even without that dish we had many leftovers. When we brought up the issue of the cake cutting fee the waitress became combative and continued to say it was protocol. We were okay with paying the fee and we're just communicating that the protocol should include letting guests know of the charge BEFOREHAND. She continued to come over and defend her position (at least 4 times) even though we had already agreed to pay the fee which made it feel incredibly frustrating and unnecessary. Especially since the bill which included compulsory tip was over $450... The service we experienced will not make us come back.

Yuuuuum!! We went a month ago and I keep wanting to go back.
The last time I loved seafood dishes this much is when were at Entremar in Mexico City. The two tostadas on the menu are a must! The tuna had roasted sesame, umami flavors and the scallop tostada had a zesty, citrus pop that accompanied the tuna so well. We also loved the chips, salsa flight and guacamole. My husband os obsessed with the crispy fish taco - says its the best he has ever had. Everything else we ate was 10/10. We had a group of 6 and all of us left stuffed and sooo happy. Special and necessary shout out to the dios mio mezcal cocktail. It was perfect.I want one now .
augachiles- was told to order to smalls.
don't do it augustine negro. - smoky fun, lingering heat begging for next bite middle spice- watered and a bit too sour spoon to mouth then bite chip tortillas a bit overcooked and crunchy pork. tasty with figs and peppers but at time more breading than meat. key lime pie is deconstructed winner. would get another service is mid. servers put drink tray over phone. they are not very serious. had to ask multiple questions about the menu. bartender forgot drink order.
Hands down the best Mexican in Brooklyn! I will say
Hands down the best Mexican in Brooklyn! I will say everything is on the spicy side so if you're not a fan, stay away. Otherwise it's to die for. The ceviches are incredibly flavorful and fresh, tostadas (especially the tuna) is out of this world, and tacos are perfection.

We walked in to Ensenada Friday night and grabbed the sole remaining outdoor table. Not sure if it was an out of sight out of mind situation with the outdoor tables but unfortunately service was verrry very slow. From what I could tell, it seemed like the move here was chips and guac and salsa and some shots of mezcal... but we went a different route and tried some cocktails, along with shrimp and fish tacos, vuelve a la vida campechano and the pork milanesa. The food was all pretty solid in terms of flavor, but the portions were a bit small. The mezcal Negroni was a good choice. They sent us home with the limón curd dessert because of the service/food delays which was okay - the kiwi was a nice touch. All that to say, while the food was tasty, it unfortunately wasn't worth the wait.

What a treat! Ensenada surpassed our expectations on every level! Each course was exquisite in taste and texture, and was equally well presented. The service was attentive and willing to discuss the menus (we especially loved the bartender, Marcus.) The atmosphere projected a delightful, happy buzz, and it still was easy to carry on a conversation with our dining companions. Thank you! We will be back!
My family came here to celebrate my sister's birthday.
We ordered the chips and guacamole, two tacos de pescado, a taco de camaron, tostada de viera, camaron, ceviche, verde aguachile, negro aguachile, the jaiba suave, the housemade pickles, the hibiscus pie, and the crema de limon. Everything was really good. I didn't know what to expect because I haven't seen a Mexican restaurant with a menu quite like this one. I was pleasantly surprised. The food was really good, and I noticed that they have outstanding press coverage. I would definitely come here again. I would also want to order more of the tacos in the future. The restaurant was pretty good and overall I think this is a great place for when you want to gather with friends or family for a special event or just because.

Prepaid Reservation Fee

When you sell a reservation that has a prepaid fee AT takes a commission on that fee. This doesn’t really make sense because it’s an expense the seller incurs not part of the profit that is shared.
For example:
Carbone NYC fee to book table for 2 is $108.88
If you sell it for $200 on AT you get $140 from them.
Your net profit is $31 and AT collects $60 in fees.
It would make more sense not to charge commission on the upfront fee as this creates a disincentive and results in higher costs for buyers.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
