Came to Empress by Boon on a Friday night with a friend and it was a delightful experience from start to finish! Unassuming entrance with a beautiful interior, flower arrangements, and fantastic service. We had the prix fixe menu (don't think there's any other option). The starter appetizers were interesting and delicious. I enjoyed the winter perigold truffle puff -- interesting mix of ingredients. The turnip cake was delicious, but I wouldn't say it was anything different from your usual turnip cake. The presentation of the steamed shrimp and squid dumplings was so fun! The dumplings had a hint of sesame oil and I'm a big fan of sweet and sour soup, so I loved that there was soup underneath.I loved the grilled Alaskan black cod. The cod flaked right off and melted in your mouth. It was on the sweeter side, which I prefer, but I can see how some might like it more savory. The stir fried Quail egg was interesting, I've never really had anything like it before. I liked the addition of the steamed wraps to go with the dish. It was like a play on Peking duck, with a fairly differentiated flavor profile. The main courses (family style) came out at once: beef short rib, dried scallop and peanut rice, and Chinese leek. We also ordered pipa duck as an additional course. These were all so delicious. I especially liked the leek and the pipa duck. I do wish maybe these dishes were served separately (maybe serve the beef short rib as a separate course?), since it was a lot all at once. We got full really fast!Lastly, for dessert (add-ons), we ordered the coconut sago and raspberry kiss. I loved the presentation of these both. I didn't try the raspberry kiss, but the coconut sago was so refreshing. The coconut sago had spicy pineapple, which everyone should try!Overall, great experience and I look forward to coming back again.

However, given the price-tag of the prefix ($100 pp) I would have expected more. I mainly went because I enjoyed the old restaurant in this location. It had a great ambiance and a very traditional Chinese styling. I don't like the styling of the new place. It is quite loud. The tiling on floors and walls reminds me of a spa and contributes to the acoustic challenges. Also, the wine by the glass pours are the smallest I have ever seen. They must get eight glasses out of a bottle.

Very beautiful atmosphere, love a nice bar area! We just came in for drinks and dumplings as we were hopping around that day, but they were both delicious! The broth that comes with the squid and shrimp dumpling is to die for! I'd come back just for this broth!

the ambiance is nice and the view is great (especially during lunar new year, you get an eye-level view of the fireworks) but i wouldn't go for the food. the dishes were all pretty americanized and you could find similar food for much lower price point. the presentation of the dessert (not included in tasting menu) was great though.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic service.
DELICIOUS menu and cocktails. Sexy ambiance--soft lighting, not too loud, windows galore. Book it.

Do not recommend! I love spending money for good food, but this place is just so bad. Everything on the menu was tasteless, I was waiting after every course something to happen so I can enjoy the next meal, but that just didn't happen...we tried everything, but returned most of the food. Dumplings were the only thing that tasted somewhat okay, but same like the ones I get at my local Chinese restaurant for a few dollars. Main course meat was just bad quality. Cocktail and service were okay.

Being a local, I've been to Empress many times as a kid for parties, weddings and dinners. But what Boon has created is beyond lovely. The atmosphere, service and food are top notch. My favorite was the dumplings shaped like a fish and a squid, presented in a sour soup. It was magical. I'm not a drinker, so the review of cocktails come from my party. It's seemed they felt the cocktails were not to taste. Some felt they were trying too hard. One cocktail had duck fat and the hope was that it would be good, but it just left a bad taste. It actually wasn't finished and had to be taken away. Other than the cocktails, the bar is beautiful. And if you're lucky to sit on the side with the view, it's great. The other seating area seems darker and less open. But still a good vibe.

Empress By Boon was a great experience but didn't feel as explorative as I was hoping for/expecting from a restaurant of this caliber. I came for the Valentine's menu, which was a 10-course menu of upscale Chinese food. I thought the presentation of the dishes was gorgeous, but the flavors didn't feel as strong or unique as I was expecting from here. Being Chinese and growing up with Chinese cuisine, it was nice to see Boon's take on some more familiar dishes but I didn't feel like they elevated the dish to a different level. One dish I thought exceeded my expectation was the Grilled Alaskan Black Cod. It had a unique flavor pairing with walnuts that I was surprised by and really ended up enjoying. The service throughout the night was a little rigid at first but loosened up over the course of dinner which I appreciated. The views here are also really beautiful. While I enjoyed the experience, I don't think the restaurant was particularly worth the price for me.
Be the first to ReplyI am an ABC grew up with cheap Chinese food from Chinatown.
Sweet and Sour pork , beef chow fun that's my jam! Am I ready for elevated Chinese food? Went with an open mind (tried really hard but as I walked up from Portsmouth Sq Garage past the wonton noodle joints, I started to worry.... Was this going to be any good? Is this food for the tourists?I was wrong! So WRONG!The Empress by Boon was entirely remodeled and the setting and views were incredible! The prix fixe menu was great (we added the duck) and more than enough. Presentation and service was on point!I hope elevated Chinese food is here to stay!

Made reservation to celebrate my husband's birthday since he wanted some good Chinese food. Saw lots of good reviews and decided to give it a shot. Overall it was decent, good ambiance and decorations, most dishes were creative, prefix menu portion was enough, and taste met expectation. The 2 things I would recommend Empress to improve on are: 1. No one asked or acknowledged we were there for a birthday celebration until the very end when they put a candle and Happy Birthday mark on our desserts. 2. We felt like the waiters/waitresses were hired from a Chinese restaurant down the street? I understand they wanted to be efficient when they served food and picked up empty plates, but felt so much like what you would see at a regular Chinese restaurant. The way they put down and pick up plates were so rough and probably doesn't belong at Empress. If Empress wants to win Michelin stars, they'll need to make some improvements to reach there.
Be the first to ReplyGood place for special occasions.
Crispy flavor, Little spicy and sweet, dumplings in sweet and sour soup is a creative. Three appetizers combined truffle, mint and sweet flavors. Lovely!

I can't remember the last time I had Chinese food with no spice.Empress by Boon unfortunately did not live up to expectations for me. I usually avoid super upscale Chinese food as I often find it not for me and more catered to a western palette. As someone who is from Asia, it might just be a huge miss.Let's talk about the good things - Cocktail bar was innovative, infusing hints of Asian favorites through the menu. I had a great time talking to the bartender and selecting a cocktail. There were some good dishes. The caviar and scallop was delicious and so was the little puff with mushroom and truffle on top. Great start to the course. The little shrimp and squid dumpling in hot and sour soup was pleasing but not something out of the ordinary. The cod was well made. The added on duck ($42 for 10 slices) was also good.Unfortunately the stir fry quail was quite laughable. I did not understand why that was on the menu. The beef short rib was good but seemed out of place (canto food vs Szechuan). Snap peas was meh. We could barely hear our servers as well. But I guess some people really like the place
Be the first to ReplyI didn't think I'd be back so soon.
This was hubby & my 2nd visit. We have semi-annual dinner with our long time friends who will venture into the City. So it should be a memorable one. I attempted to make reservations at a couple other special occasion places but no luck. I checked Empress by Boon and viola! Success. The six of us were seated at one of the half moon shaped booths. We faced northeast toward Coit Tower. It was a sunny day so we were able to see blue skies. All six of us are native San Franciscans so we didn't necessarily ooh & aah but it was very nice. We thought everything we ate this time around was way better than last time. The $98 prefixed menu included 5 individual starters and 3 mains family style. It started off very understated - the first three items reminded me of dim sum items fancied up. Then it ramped up from there. The dishes that stood out:* grilled Alaskan black cod* New England lobsterMy sis wanted the $48 Peking style duck breast after our server brought it up. 10 pieces. Last time we ordered the whole $300 Peking duck. I don't think it was available this go around. We ordered the duck breast. Crispy duck skin. But the breast meat very thin. I'd pass on that if available next time. This time we ordered dessert - passion fruit cheesecake. Hubby said he was full. I had to remind him it'll probably be a dollop. Sure enough. Just enough to cleanse the palate.Chef Boon came out of the kitchen to say hello. He appeared younger than I recall from the last time. Of course we gave him well deserved accolades. It was great attentive service. Dishes cleared as needed. Water refilled. Sometimes it was difficult to hear what was being said as each dish was being described cuz the food deliverers are all wearing face masks. Take a photo of the menu so you can refer back. Will I return? Definitely as it'll be a new dining experience. The menu changes every month or so.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best fine dining experiences I've ever had.
The dishes are on point. Kudos to Chef Boon and his staff.

Ummmm I called in early and requested a table next to the window and the girl who me picked up the phone said "OK" , we arrived and they sat us somewhere else and I told my server that I reserved a table next to the window earlier and she said: there are no signs saying I reserved a table next to the window,i told her clearly not your fault, prolly the receptionist ;( that's my first turn down, service was excellent, the Chinese sticky fired rice was super authentic, other dishes kinda Americanized,I'd say it's a fusion restaurant,Much better than hakkasan I'd say, this place is pretty good for dating, get laid n stuff,$450 for two including tips,I might be back but I really hope they can put some more works into the reservation stuffs. Chef boom was cool, even came out and asked if everything is doing ok,we need more chefs like him,Michelin starred chef that's why!

Wow. This experience is 1000% worth the wait. As a Bay Area native, surrounded by amazing Asian cuisine, this place is incredible. The service was impeccable and don't get me started about the ambiance and decor. I will be dreaming about this dinner for a long time. Congrats Chef Boon! We can't wait to come back again.

warning: the following written description and praise of Empress by Boon cannot and will not describe the blood, sweat & tears that must have been needed to create such a beautiful institution as this. The complexity of flavors presented simply in each dish is something to behold. The view of San Francisco is that out of an illustration depicting the exemplary city skyline.Chef Boon is modest - a mythically rare trait among chefs with a public presence in 2022.If your stay is unsatisfactory at Empress, it is you and not the restaurant.

Be the first to ReplyNot a big fan of fusion food.
I am more into authentic kind of food so I don't really expect a lot from this interesting place. Small reception and guest have to take elevator to 6 floor...kind of wondering what is on the 5 stories downstairs...lolI glad they have a very traditional chinese main entrance, not the minimalistic design. My friend told me they actually keep some of the old elements from the original Chinese restaurant. Thumbs up Cocktail is good. I love the name...Broken promise. Only issue I had that night was the waitress broke the cork of my wine. No biggie. The Sommelier took care of the problem right away. Everything else was very good after. Amazing appetizers, a few very well designed dish presented as individual dish. The finale is a combo of 3 dish of meat, veggie and sticky rice. Second best sticky rice I even have. My grandma made the best. I was too busy enjoying the food so I forgot to take pictures of the rice. Over all, I like this meal more than the Omakase I had last week in Hinata. I think this meal provides better variety and experience. Well done Boon sa!

I was looking forward to trying this place with my boyfriend and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere, service, presentation, and food was a delight. We got cocktails, unique and delicious, with the tasting menu, adding Peking duck as well. We enjoyed every course except for one (it was very chewy abalone that left us barely choking it down). Besides that one course, everything else was very enjoyable - the food, drinks, and view from the table. I was peeking at the current menu and would absolutely love to come back, the truffle puff and dumplings were our favorite and the rest of the new menu (thankfully no abalone) sounds delicious. I would recommend this place for a lovely date night out!

Old school empress of China???? Nope long gone and empress by noon moved in, that view is still amazing. The tasting menu for the evening was for there first year anniversary, every dish was well seasoned and the chef even came out to say hello. Bonus points if you can speak Cantonese or mandarin, a lovely evening for a special someone of hang out at the bar. Tables I believe are reservations only
Be the first to ReplyThis has been the WORSE DINING EXPERIENCE I have ever had
This has been the WORSE DINING EXPERIENCE I have ever had over the past 5 years. We had a reservation for 2 at 9:30 pm on Friday 7/22. We got there and the hostess saw us trying to open the door because we thought it was locked and she looked at us from the host stand and said why don't you opened the door? I was a little shocked by her attitude. I proceeded to tell her I had and "appointment" which should've been " I have a reservation"and as soon as she heard me pronounce the word appointment she said with sarcasm "an appointment or a reservation " I was honestly speechless. I literally was about to open my mouth and she immediately said "well under what name ?" I said Vania. She said go to floor number 6, as she was saying this to us a group of 4 Caucasian people were walking out the elevator and she completely changed her attitude and said to them "thanks for coming have a wonderful evening" THIS IMMEDIATELY THREW ME OFF...but the worse was yet to come. We get upstairs-my boyfriend was trying to calm me down saying maybe she had a rough night- a very nice man welcomed us in and a nice lady showed us our table. We were at the very end of the restaurant, it seemed to be a small separate room with a large party at the end of it, then it was our table facing the view and one table right behind us with 4 Caucasian people (2 females and 2 males). Our sever Cindy (which was the only reason we tipped $50) was very attentive, she explained us the pre fix menu and took our drink order. Drinks were BAD,no balance in the ingredients at all,we ordered 2 vodka cocktails listed on their menu and we had to send one back because it tasted like cough medicine. Extremely sweet and no balance at all. I ordered a boulevardier which was delicious but sadly couldn't finish it or enjoy it because of what happened next...At this point I noticed the table behind us was too agitated, they had a bottle of wine and got served 4 martinis (all of this while we just got there and got our drinks). So I'm assuming they got even more drinks before we got there. 20 minutes into our dinner (we just got the lobster) one of the guys from the table previously mentioned started cursing and hitting the table with both of his hands repeatedly. Not only we noticed this disruption but also the large party who was trying to sing happy birthday for one of their family members.I called our server and explained the situation to her and asked to please call the manager, he approached us and never, not even once addressed this behavior that kept on and on for over 15 minutes with this male sitting right behind us. The manager did offer to give us another table but my question is why we needed to be moved in the middle of our tasting menu while the male right behind us was the one causing all the noise and acting like if it was his first time out in public. We decided to leave, we asked for the check and even tho we didn't even get to half of the tasting menu we were charged $200 for ABSOLUTELY THE WORSE DINNER EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD IN SAN FRANCISCO. While I understand the establishment is not responsible for their patron's behavior I do expect the manager to be able to handle this type of situation, after all we are all paying the same prices, and guess what the manager was also Caucasian. I mention this because I'm Latina , I wasn't wearing a costume nor was being disrespectful and from the very beginning I noticed a change of attitude when we checked in. I read some reviews on here and let me tell you... food is NOT WORTH IT, drinks are not good and managing either needs to be re-trained or simply advertise that they will treat you according your ethnicity. WE LEFT WITH AN EMPTY STOMACH, $250 less in our pocket and the manager packed the rest of our food to go...really? Do not recommend and won't ever forget this experience. Ok

Had the prix fixe menu and it was all good! Server was awesome and friendly. The vibe of the restaurant was great too! My partner and I also ordered dessert and that actually stood out more to me than the prix fixe. Not saying that the food was bad in any way cause it was all good, but the dessert was a good way to end the night. I'd definitely come back here again
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed by the service I received at the bar.
The female bartender could have asked me if I wanted another drink. She could have offered me the dessert menu instead of assuming what I wanted and leaving it at that. I'm fine paying the high prices for food/drink but it comes with some expectation of service, especially when the bar is empty. It was a lot of $$$ for a very small amount of food but I wouldn't have left with a sour taste in my mouth if the service had been up to higher standards.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing staff and service.
Ambiance of the restaurant was very nice.I had the $88 pre fix menu with the additional supplement with Peking duck. Overall, everything came out very good and tasteful. Great temperature on all the foods. My favorite dish was prob the braised pork belly. The first dish which was a ball, resemble a Chinese dim sum item call him sui Gok. This very very unique and good.Loved the Peking duck and dungeness crab as well. I would come back again hoping for a different menu as I see it changes with season. Great experience overall.
