Emilio Ballato
I have tried probably 20+ different chicken parms in my short 27 years on this beautiful rock that is floating in an ever expanding universe, but this one really changed my life. We came later on a Wednesday night, and were seated immediately by Emilio himself. He was just posted up outside, he must really love this sh*t ahahahahaa. You walk into a small dining room, and are surrounded by framed pictures of celebrities with Emilio, or a signed picture addressed to him. My mind began to wonder and think he must be at least slightly narcissistic, but concluded a narcissistic person would likely run a restaurant better as they are motivated by extrinsic goals such as money or fame as opposed to intrinsic goals such as healthy relationships or personal growth. Okay, Enough of the armchair psychology Johnny. Fine. This was my favorite Italian food I have had in NYC. But I haven't been to Carbone yet so idk. The bread was elite as it actually had a bit of red sauce on it. Nice touch, Emilio. We opted for calamari, the bolognese, and of course the chicken parm. The bolognese and chicken parm went together like 2005 Reggie Bush and LenDale White. Mf Unstoppable. He can be as narcissistic as he wants, but if Emilio keeps cooking up these god-tier chicken parms I will keep coming back. THANK YOU EMILIO! IG @jnov_ TIktok @jnov__

Unfortunate that I have to change my 5 star review to a 1-star. Really great experience first time around by the son of the owner, Mario. Second time around, probably the worst dining experience I have ever had. We waited outside for over a half hour for a table (if just about everyone in front of us did not leave it would have been a lot longer). Once we were inside I was told to go to a certain table and some older guy stood in front of me and barked "Can I help you?" before he moved out of the way and allowed us to proceed to our table. We had a waiter that was inattentive and rude. He could care less about us as customers and didn't even check in once aside from bringing the food and the check. I don't mind an unexpected long wait time for a table but not to be systemtically treated like trash with a close relative. Not to mention I was told previously that being seated at 2pm would not be an issue by 'someone' at the restaurant. So careful when using the email on the website because you don't know who are talking to. We really have no reason to return.
Be the first to ReplyWorth the wait
Definitely worth the wait. Arrived at 5 on a Sunday and was seated by 5:45, 6. I was solo and met a Mom/Daughter and another solo- we combined into a 4 top/shared entrees and it will be one of my favorite memorable dining experiences for life.
Be the first to ReplyNot Worth the Wait
TLDR: do not attempt to eat here if you are not a regular diner at the restaurant. We had heard great things about this restaurant and it seems many others had too. When we arrived around 6.30pm the restaurant was full and there were 8 other couples lined up outside. We decided to wait since they do not take reservations, calculating that the most we would probably have to wait would be about an hour. What we didn’t realize at that time was that they have a backdoor process for family, friends and regular diners. So diners would arrive, talk to the servers and then walk around the back of the building and get right in. We waited over 2.5 hours to get in to eat!!! We are not unreasonable and whilst we completely understand that a restaurant wants to take care of their regular and loyal clientele, we had no way to gauge how long we would have to wait and it was so demoralizing to watch a bunch of diners leave, thinking it was going to be our turn to get in soon and then having to continue to endlessly wait, while all the backdoor diners got seated ahead if us. It is a terrible system for the non regular diner and ultimately had we known we would have had to wait that long we would have left. The food itself is delicious, but definitely not worth the overall experience of trying to actually get into the restaurant

We were waiting outside and some kind of maitre let us know that better to take a table of ten btw the ones we were waiting than stay till midnight…a true lie , many tables were available within 15 minutes…same person that brought us main dishes when we just started our apetizers…food somewhat good but not to die for…..expensive and service to forget…Italy? Italy is far away from ballato
Be the first to ReplySpaghetti Al Pomodoro - delicious!
Spaghetti al Pomodoro is what I usually like to have when I go to a new restaurant. If the sauce is well flavored then I know that I should return to have other dishes. When I went to Emilio’s Ballato this is what I ate. I also had an appetizer of the broccoli di rape as I like butter vegetables especially when garlic is featured No reservations are taken here but on the weekdays the wait was not long.

What a wonderful find! Excellent menu, expertly cooked at a reasonable l e price. Get in line fast as it fills up by 4:50 and always a line after that. Sea bass was expertly cooked, with clams. Foccacia was tasty and wonderfully cooked. Pasta was al dented and meatballs were the highlight. Wonderful evening. Thanks emelio
Be the first to ReplyNot worth it! Owner rude to guests when complimented the overpriced food, not even a smile.
Please please please understand what you are getting into before you go . . . Celebrities go here so it’s a popular hot spot. They don’t take reservations which is fine, we stood in line for 1 1/2 hours before we were seated and the food was worth it. The service was also good. But the OWNER, he’s a curmudgeon (mean old man, makes curmudgeon sound nice)he walked through the restaurant, and as a couple from the UK complimented on how good the food was, (I sat right beside them) he did NOT Thank them, in fact, he ignored them, and made the entire experience not worth it at all. I felt so bad for this couple. They had waited in line for almost 2 hours and didn’t even get a thank you when they praised the meal, not even a smile or nod. It was a very uncomfortable experience overall. The owner engaged in a heated discussion with an elderly man after he asked the man at the door about wait time. Bottom line, food REALLY good, service good and polite, atmosphere tense and stressful.
Be the first to ReplyFunky restaurant with excellent food
This is a very unique restaurant. They do not take reservations. There is a long line in the evening. I had the Pollo al Limone and my wife had the Pesto pasta both were excellent. I would eat here again

Probably my 7th visit. Terrific menu and experience every time I go. Can’t wait for the next visit. I refer friends, family and business associates all the time! Go here!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Southern Italian Food
My family went to Emilio's Ballato in May 2022 and just loved it. We are all either native New Yorkers and/or intense foodies who have traveled the world ... and we agreed, hands down, that Emilio's Ballato has the best chicken parmigiana in the world. It doesn't come with pasta, but is a large portion and you could easily share it and get one of their delish pasta dishes as well.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful dining experience!
My husband and I dropped in for lunch and were rewarded with a sublime dining experience. I ordered the ravioli con ricotta, and he had the trippe alla marinara (although I admit to sampling some of the tripe myself 🙂). Service was excellent, and the food was delicious! Una meravigliosa esperienza culinaria!
Be the first to ReplyHorrible female waitress
As a native new yorker I am extremely disappointed in my experience here. Went to dinner here after waiting 2 hours outside. It was 10:30 PM we wanted to share a couple dishes and a round of drinks but not each get our own dish, considering it was 10:30 PM and we had intended to eat at 8:30. The waitress was so rude practically yelling asking if we knew that this was a restaurant and laughed in our faces when we didn't each want to get our own dish. Ended up ordering more dishes for her sake, she proceeded to death glare and ignore us the entire night while rushing us through our meal and slamming dishes on the table. Absolutely horrible service and will never return.

Unfriendly, no Information White waiting, promising a table-but several times let friends inside without Reservation. Not Professional.
Be the first to ReplyGreat old school ambience
Great food. Nice old school Italian ambience . A little pricey but the quality and service are excellent. We had the caprese salad to start. Fresh tomatoes. I had the chicken parmigiana. Excellent. Cooked just right.
Be the first to ReplyGreat old school Italian restaurant
The owner, perched at the front of the restaurant with his pals, gave us the once-over as we entered before a waiter showed us to our seats. We didn't know what to expect, but had read some good reviews of this old school celebrity hangout (the walls are filled with pictures of celebrities who have dined here). As it turned out, we had some of the best New York Italian food ever. The focaccia bread was superbly baked and the burrata super fresh and full of flavour. Our mains of lasagne and linguine alle vongole were perfectly cooked. As we left, John Hamm (the actor) and his girlfriend were standing at the doorway eagerly awaiting our free table. Will definitely be back.

I look for restaurants near me and This one stand out. Michelin at a good price. The food was ok, but the price was way to high. Not coming back don’t care if Justin Bieber went
Be the first to ReplyBest Italian food we've ever had
Visited with family in May 2022 - arrived for a late lunch/early dinner. The main courses were amazing and the desserts were even better! Loved the quaint atmosphere. We've read previous reviews about the service being average or below - that was not our experience. We servers was very attentive and professional. This will now be a regular stop for us when we visit NYC.

Never had a veal chop pounded so thin. Really impressed with my veal Parm. Also enjoyed my clams Oregenatta. Drinks were solid too. Good experience. Would go back.
Be the first to ReplyUnexpected Pleasures
After she cleaned my teeth, my dental hygienist recommended the curiously-named Emilio’s Ballato for lunch. I mentioned the recommendation a little later when I met two friends in front of the REI store near my dentist’s office. My friends were down for Italian food. A minute’s walk later we were inside the NoLita door of the well-known and well-regarded eatery. None of us, though, knew that fact and of course we had no prior experience with Emilio Vitolo, the owner of the restaurant (formerly owned by John Ballato). We were apparently the first customers of the day. When Mr. Vitolo, who sat at a table next to the entrance of his restaurant, asked us what we were there for, my answer was that we were there for lunch. Could there have been another reason? Mr. Vitolo quickly sized us up as the innocents we were, who had stumbled into his lair. After a couple more slightly intimidating interrogatories, Emilio called to a waiter who had just walked out of the kitchen into the small dining room, “Tony, take care of these guys.” His tone was ambiguous. Were we going to be handed menus or fitted for concrete overshoes? As we waited for our food, we looked around the room. The walls were covered with photos of people, many of whom are well known to the public, and among them in particular were people in the business of making music. Often plctured with them was Emilio Vitolo. Our food arrived and so did customers who wanted lunch. I’m sure some of them also wanted to say hello to Emilio as much as they wanted the meal they would soon enjoy. They weren’t as innocent as we were. I certainly enjoyed my meal, and my friends did too. My extraordinarily tasty tortellini sat in a shallow and exquisitely sumptuous broth. My companions were similarly impressed with their seafood dishes. This is not a fast food franchise. The time it took our food to arrive was justified. Service was pleasant, professional and not intrusive. When we finished our lunch, Mr. Vitolo seemed reluctant to pose for a photo, at least until he prevailed upon my two friends to sit next to him. I made one more photo. I think, when he saw it, he liked the way I pictured him. This review is just a snapshot of one afternoon at an Italian restaurant in Lower Manhattan. I have only reported on one dish that knocked my socks off. The food, however, good as it was, formed only part of the wonderful experience of spending time at Emilio’s Ballato.
Be the first to ReplyWoman in charge was out of control
Ambiance was awful. The owner, I assume, since no one tried to restrain her yelled and was abusive to other diners. They were quiet, civilized and regulars, but she went off on them. She merely rushed us through our meal, said we had to leave by 11. We ordered house wine and she charged us $75 but when I asked she snarled and we just wanted out. Pasta was good but lots of places in New York have good pasta and a pleasant setting This was inexcusable! Do not go !!
Be the first to ReplyPasta cooked to perfection
Very intimate family restaurant with small tables. Pasta was perfectly cooked in a beautiful sauce. House wine was of good quality and tiramisu was the perfect final to a great meal. The service was friendly and the owner was actually sitting at the next table.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Dinner
Great date night for couples. Good and atmosphere were old school New York. Dinner, wine and dessert selection exceeded expectations. Loved our night out as small group of couples.
Be the first to ReplyAtmospheric, authentic, great food
We - two couples - stumbled into Emilio's and found a gem. The owner (Emilio, I presume) is not the chattiest host in the world (!), but his food and staff more than make up for that. On first appearances, it would be easy to walk past and write this place off, but that would be a missed opportunity. Great, great food; simply Italian fayre cooked well and served quickly yet attentively. Small-ish menu that concentrated on good dishes. My partner described her cheesecake as "the best I've ever had!" - and she's hard to please. As a Brit in New York, I was thrilled to see photos and mementoes of former guests on the wall, many featuring my here David Bowie, who'd eaten there many times. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyTasty food, awkwardness due to owner being extremely rude to staff in front of all dinners twice - unprofessional.
We had a lovely dinner, food tasted nice, although would rate it as overpriced. For starter we ordered mixed antipasti - nice but not amazing, wouldn’t class it being worth the price. I had a really beautiful fish of the day with clams and beautiful sauce - really enjoyed it. The 2nd main we had was breaded chicken alla parma - enjoyed it during the first few bites but it was too rich - too much cheese and no vegetables or any sides to go with.
Service was mixed. The wait to order was a little too long but once ordered, timing of the waiter was perfect.
Our experience was interrupted 2 times by the owner being extremely rude to his staff - loudly and in front of all diners. This made us feel awkward but also revolted by how staff was treated. For that reason, I would not want to come back to a restaurant that doesn’t treat staff with respect.
