Inexpensive tasty food
Amazing food..... Won't be disappointed. Cheap and cheerful. You might have to wait for table but food is served quickly.
Be the first to ReplyTypical tavern a stone's throw from the center
Suggestive location, small and very rustic, the place is hidden (not even a sign is present). Little choice on the menu but the dishes offered are made with fresh ingredients, the kitchen is open. They don't bring water like in other places but a jug of white wine, they also offered us a glass while we waited for a table to become free, even if compared to other restaurants it's not long. If you are alone or as a couple it may happen that you eat with strangers to take up fewer tables. Prices in line with other restaurants and generous portions.
Be the first to ReplyUnique Lunch Experience Near Athens Market
This spot is well worth a stop for a truly unique lunch experience. It is hard to find in a basement across form the market, but it is worth the hunt. You will share a table with other diners. There is no menu. Whatever they are cooking is what you get. Stews, grilled sardines, salad, white wine, bread. Simple and delicious. Go!

Good food but really impolite boss. The place is old but nice but the service is bad. I was even called for not ordering what the waiter wanted.

The social media hype is true, this is an amazing place to try out. Honestly when I first arrived I was surprised and confused. The restaurant is literally a hole in the wall, where you have to walk through a small opening down super steep stairs to enter the restaurant. There are very few tables and they cover them with paper. Definitely not a fancy place to eat but I can say for sure still a wonderful place to eat. I don’t speak Greek but the server still worked with me. I ended up sitting with a lovely Greek couple because the tables are shared due to the small size of the restaurant. We made friends and I still keep in touch with them. As far as food, I have the salad, garbanzo beans and fish. All were delicious, well made and extremely fresh. The favors are something I will remember for a long time. It felt like having a meal at someone’s home. I loved it and would recommend this restaurant.

BRILIANT - everything you have read is true. Delicious food made with love. Eat the special of the day without fuss. Superb!!
Be the first to ReplyIf you want a Greek traditional experience, this is a MUST.
I read a lot of reviews about this location and they were very mixed reviews. My fiancée and myself went to this location last week and the outside of the restraunt looked very sketchy and in the local area of Athens (which I loved), my fiancée not so much. We went down the hidden restraunt and observed the beautiful and traditional restraunt with wine barrels. We were then greeted by the owner and advised of the menu for the day (chickpeas, potatoes , fish and sardines) we ordered everything . Food came and everything was so delicious and fresh . I am so glad I got to experience this traditional adventure. The service is very busy and they don’t tend to be rude but with a language barrier that’s how they communicate, I don’t get offended and am very understanding.
Be the first to ReplyLoved it!’
Ignore all the negative comments, I absolutely loved every second of my time there. The food was lovely and full of flavor. Yes it is basic, but it is delicious. No frills just food like your yiayia would make that takes sooo good!!!
Be the first to ReplyIt is a fun scam!
I was looking for a very genuine place to eat. This place looked like one. After all there is no sign! You have to know where you are going. I got: 1. a tiny plate of fava (it was good) 2. two burnt and dry sardines (not good at all but I ate them to justify their death) 3. a small dish of potato and vegetable stew (I quite liked it) 4. a small glass of mediocre white wine 5. a piece of bread There was no bill. The owner later told me I owed him 20 euros. I gave him a 50 euro bill. He took a wad of money out of his pocket and gave me back 30 euros. The experience was sort of fun but also unkind and cruel. I felt amused and upset at the same time. I do not understand why the police have not visited that restaurant. I will never go back there. Once this place can be fun. Twice? No way!
Be the first to ReplyI don't understand the popularity of this place
I don't understand this place. So many people blathering on about how authentic Greek it is. Four mediocre menu items, devoid of flavour, day in and day out, don't make this place authentic. Chick pea stew, sardines, beans and Greek salad - four items you see in every social media post is what's on offer. Nothing more. Yes, the man in the restaurant (and I use the term loosely) said he was going to cook orzo with meat but he hadn't gotten around to it yet. Note: I've never seen a photo of anything but chick peas, sardines, beans and greek salad. Come to think of it, I don't think I even saw a kitchen in this place to warrant calling it a restaurant. They were "cooking" on hot plates in a corner behind a makeshift counter. It's no surprise he hadn't gotten around to the orzo and meat - he couldn't possibly have cooked meat in that "kitchen." The bread was so elementary, that even the most basic bread at my local chain grocer is better than the bread here that everyone raves about in their reviews. There's no menu. There's no price list. You don't know if the table next to you is paying less or more than you (note: they probably are). Some youtube influencer with no taste goes here, oohs and ahhs on about how "great the food is" and how amazing the bread is and now the people line up to eat mediocre food in a subterranean room that except for cleverly placed decorative wooden casks, would be nothing more than a basement or cellar not fit for storage, much less dining. And yet they line up for flavourless food, given nothing to wipe their mouths with, no side dishes (you all eat from the plates at the table using only the fork you're given), washed down with wine is warm as piss. Authentic is a relative term. And it's not so much a question of whether this place is authentic as much as whether it's good - and it's not good. It wasn't terribly expensive, but you can get better, "authentic" food elsewhere. Beware the social media influencers when they say something is good. There are so many better food experiences in Athens where you can sit in the open air, eat great food, hear some music, and feel "authentic". Except, the influencers haven't found those places yet. Pick another place to eat. Never mind the influencers on this one.
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic and delicious
Other reviewers have explained the layout and we just found it exceptionally tasty as well. We would have no hesitation in recommending it.
Be the first to Replya tourists' trape
3 dishes were 'thrown' on our table: a greasy chickpea soup, salty sardines swimming in oil, and another one. This is for 2 people for 27 euros.
It felt like this is a joke at our expense; at us, tourists that are looking for an authentic experience. Do yourself a favor; there are so many good and real restaurants in Athens, don't waste a meal in this restaurant
Greek soul food.
A fantastic authentic meal very simple with great bread, chickpea, fava bean soup,Sardines ,wine and it had fantastic strong flavours this place is very simple but cooked to perfection,do not expect five star surroundings this is a family eating place serving delicious home-cooked food sitting amongst wine barrels in the basement near the Central market if you want an authentic experience this place is like eating at your Aunties home.in Greece. We highly recommend this place.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was okay
I went to the restaurant today and they gave me four sardines, a bowl of chickpeas, some bread and wine. it tasted okay but for €15 i don't think I would want to go back there again or recommend it to anyone.
Be the first to ReplyGreat and basic home cooking.
For basic but delicious Greek home cooking enter the cellar through one of the 2 graffiti encrusted doors.
You get what they serve that day with a metal canister of tavern wine.
An authentic and fun experience.
A lasting memory for my family. I’m as straight a shooter as they come, here’s the deal…
I am seeing some poor reviews of this place…If you expected a fancy dinner than you shouldn’t have gone into a basement through a door littered with graffiti to eat in the first place . If you want a home cooked meal by a very genuine local cook, then this is exactly what you will get. The owner was a little kert at first because we arrived close to closing time, but as soon as we told him that we would take whatever he had left and be happy, his mood changed. I have no idea what we were eating but it was soul food and we all very much enjoyed it. We had the best Greek salad of our 9 day trip at Diporto. This was surely a highlight of our trip and my sometimes
fussy daughters had nothing but great reviews. I see complaints about the prices? I will tell you this; it all depends on your attitude. Our bill was very very reasonable and he received a extremely generous tip. I don’t know the gentleman’s name who runs the restaurant, but thank you for adding to our vacation!
Overhyped, violating legal rules
Nice location in a cellar. Only five or six dishes, no written menu. The food was mediocre. They didn't check the vaccination status and you do not get a bill. In Greece, restaurants are obliged to give you an official bill (as a measure to avoid tax evasion) and a vaccination check is also mandatory.

Wow - please try this place. I bet there isn’t anywhere as authentic in Athens. Superb no nonsense cooking home style.
Enter the basement restaurant take it in and be amazed! Wow.
The most authentic bar in Athens
This place was established in 1911 and according to one of the locals it has been family run for all of that time and the man who now works there day in day out has been brought up there since a child. Now if that did not encourage you to go due to the authentic background then the food most definitely will! There is no menu, there is no thrills, just home cooked food collected that morning from the produce markets and amazing tasting wine from the barrel. When you sit down (beware there can be queues) you are offered a choice between meat or fish, the rest is left to the owner! We got a big bowl of sardines one day, a meat stew the day after, stewed chickpeas as a side and a great dish with potatoes on one of the times also! They write the price down on the table and that is basically it- what a great experience we had! Would highly recommend!
