What's not to love about this place! Beautiful ambience, sumptuous food, delightfully attentive staff and oh the live music playing in the background . I'd pick this place every time I'm around central park.

Wonderful restaurant set in the beautiful Carlyle hotel! Loved the paintings and photographs all around the restaurant. The service was impeccable, the captain and the servers were all so attentive to our needs and did not feel rushed at all. We ordered two restaurant week menus and a main course. All to share. This was definitely enough for 4 people. The portions were good size, not small by any means! I was full at the end of the meal. By restaurant week, ordered: - kale and farro salad (I loved this but hubby is allergic to nuts and the captain did not mention or ask if anyone had allergies before the meal!! Big no no ! Luckily I noted the nuts! Hubby did not eat this. - tuna tartare: good and fresh - pekin duck (this was good but a bit chewy and fatty) - beef short ribs (this was excellent!) - crepes Suzette with grand marnier (excellent! And cooked table side - raspberry soufflรฉ (could've skipped this, I generally love soufflรฉs but raspberry was not the best flavor) Additionally also ordered Halibut - which was also blah. Cooked in a leeks and smashed potatoes, barely any sauce, just bland And asparagus side, this was good Overall, loved the service and restaurant but food was a mere passรฉ.

They really mean well but haven't gotten their acttogether yet. Food just OK, service good. Some day may make it.Bring a load of cash.

This is the worst dinner experience ever, I feel the service is terrible and the food is so overpriced and not worth the money. First of all, the steak that we ordered on that night, it was totally disgusting, the meat is not cooked properly and you can't taste any spice and flavor of the meat. And the desert is even worse, I barely eat nothing good at that night, I just feel the service is really terrible too, we were waiting for them to get a spoon around 20 minutes.
Be the first to ReplyProbably the worst meal I've had in recent memory
Probably the worst meal I've had in recent memory (potentially ever). The one star, if anything, is for the service and the festive decor. Service was fine and as expected from an establishment like the Carlyle. We went here for the pre-fix Christmas Day dinner - cost per diner was $300 (inclusive of a 10% "administrative fee" of which I hope a good part of this fee / cost goes to the individuals working during and through the holidays) not including alcohol. Presentation-wise everything looked fantastic and as expected (again) for a place like the Carlyle. Execution on the food itself was extremely lacking. For anyone who has given the food 3 stars or more - it's astounding and I have to imagine that they've bamboozled themselves into believing it was good because of the fine dining / premium flair of the restaurant and hotel. The Bad: the leg of lamb was under salted and partially too well done and the mint chimichurri that came with it just gave the plate color (no taste and was not complementary) - the only distinguishing taste was the gaminess of under salted lamb, roasted chicken was dry / tough and again under salted - texture was like sand, the chocolate cake of the bouche de Noel tasted old and as if it was pre-made several days in advance, the duck pรขtรฉ came sliced in a baked pastry which was cold and congealed / compacted with the fat of the duck with no discernible taste other than that of a deli meat. The Okay / Good: wine selection, martini, soufflรฉ, serviceOverall, at the price point and reputation of the Carlyle I expected a lot more (even if the overall cost is baking in the premium of eating out / getting served during the holidays). The final pile on / annoyance was how they managed the line at Bemelmans (hotel bar next to Dowling's) - the host / individual managing the long line to get in basically shouted to everyone multiple times: "you have no chance of getting in here unless you're a guest of the hotel" - if that's the case, then why would you mark it as "open" and should've just put a sign out saying "hotel guests only" - no class for a classy(???) establishment like the Carlyle.

Beautiful atmosphere, decent food and drinks, and mixed service. There were really attentive staff with great personality (wish I remembered his name, but in the short amount of time I was there, we had wonderful conversations about what a beautiful day off to have, things to do in the city, and tattoos) and there were just some that were okay or wasn't in tune. The drinks were alright. The food is okay. May just stop by for a glass of wine if in the area.
Be the first to ReplyThis was an immaculate experience.
I was sort of blown away. We came to celebrate my Mom's Birthday and from the get the service was excellent. I think what I enjoyed so much about this restaurant is that it's old fashioned, fancy dining (complete with captains, servers, tableside presentations, etc.) but it never felt stuffy and the portions were nicely sized. Compared to something like Daniel where you leave hungry and feeling like you couldn't laugh or smile, lest you be scolded by the staff or other patrons, this managed to be the perfect balance of elegant and fun.The room is beautiful and not too large. The bar attached to it was packed, and although the restaurant was full on a Friday night it didn't feel overly busy or too loud. I loved the paintings and art on the wall and the unique light fixtures and other dรฉcor touches. The service, as mentioned above, was top notch. Our captain was friendly, informed, and made us feel welcome and appreciated. The food was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meal - the tuna tartare was lovely, the ribeye was cooked to perfection, someone at our table had the Steak Diane which they prepared tableside, the dover sole was presented and perfectly fileted by the table, a massive sundae was prepared and assembled tableside - just a fantastic experience throughout. It's expensive, of course. For special celebrations or those who want to splurge. But for us it was worth every penny, and I hope to find another excuse to come back soon.

This is one of those bucket list restaurants for those in NYC. Took us a few years to finally dine here and I'm glad we did. First and foremost, the service is top notch and very friendly. The atmosphere is incredible and a must see. Food was solid, but pricey as you might expect. All in all, I'd say it's worth it for a special occasion
Be the first to ReplyThanks for ruining our anniversary.
My partner made a reservation two weeks ago to celebrate our anniversary. It's restaurant week and we love trying new places and experiences. It's 90 degrees outside so my boyfriend wore a collared short and shorts and I wore a dress. Upon walking in we were instantly stopped by a security guard who told my boyfriend he was wearing shorts and the restaurant host would turn us away. The restaurant host then proceeded to tell us we should of looked at the website to see there is a dress code (I booked through google reservations and someone called to confirm and never ONCE mentioned a dress code). He then said "fine, I'll sit you in the corner." Thanks for making us feel like scum and embarrassing us on a special night.
Be the first to ReplyI was there as part of Restaurant Week.
The food was good but the overall experience was disappointing. First you have some security guy that is way too agressive and unwelcoming. Then they brought the appetizer and the main dish immediately (almost too fast IMO) but we waited 20+ min for the dessert: many staff noticed we were waiting but it's only after we inquire about it that they were brought up.
Be the first to ReplyDowlings is lovely and my dining experience was wonderful.
The food was creative and delicious and the service is unmatched. I just started a new job in the neighborhood so all of the Carlyle restaurants are going to quickly become regular spots for me. Dowlings is also perfect for special occasions. The decor is interesting and you can just feel the history of the building. Everyone who waited on us was super attentive and accommodating. The next time someone visits me from out of town I will definitely be taking them to Dowlings for a guaranteed exquisite meal!

The most exciting new restaurant post-pandemic! This place ticks all the boxes, brilliant chef Sylvain Delpique reinvents and elevates American and European classics in an intimate art-filled dining room. The staff are super professional and fun especially when they're finishing preparations tableside. From the original Cocktails to an after-dinner cognac, this is the place NYC has been waiting for.

Nestled in the historic Carlyle Hotel, is Dowling's Restaurant. It has stunning interiors with gorgeous framed artwork lining the inside. Brightly lit and inviting, the interiors are a spectacle of their own. It is one of the few remaining old school establishments which retains the classic fine dining structure of tables being serviced by Captains, Servers, and Bussers - all of whom are delightfully kind and warm. You are welcomed with warm bread and butter and serviced like royalty for the rest of your meal. The food was spectacular and the drinks are strong. I highly recommend ordering the table side Sundae to finish off your meal, dinner and a show. Overall, perfect.

Food has become legit delicious and my favorite place for a fancy UES lunch. I had quite possibly the single best lobster bisque and lobster sandwich in nyc! An Old New York institution with so much history.

after reading the recent reviews of the reopening of the Dowling restaurant at the Carlyle and having had fond memories of many enjoyable dinners we chose this as our place to celebrate my wife's 84th birthday with friends. ย This was one of the most horrible evenings we've experienced at a restaurant. Unless you are a masochist do not, do not, contemplate having dinner at this restaurant.Aside from the wonderful Tatinger ย rose champagne friends ordered everything was completely downhill. It is not a luxurious restaurant ย and somewhat unattractive. There were four of us having dinner and I could only barely talk to the person next to me since the noise level was horrendous. The captain/waiter who informed me he had been there many years and therefore I expected the kind of service we we were used to in the past. His attention was nonexistent. 45 minutes after we had soup we still had not received our dinner. I got up from the table and went in search of our captain/waiter and when I told him he was not doing a very good job of -"where was our ย food ?"his response was "see the manager". We complained many times to the manager and etal. and our food still did not come out- they told us it was being cooked. Finally the three parties who ordered fish were served. I never received by lamb shank- a number of complaints to the manager and other people still do not produce my dinner. ย I asked my wife for a piece of her fish and decided to give up my dinner. We had complained to the captain, waiters, manager, and on and on. At that point we decided we had to leave my wife had a headache I was getting to be furious with what was going on and the ruination of what was supposed to be a lovely evening. Finally they brought out my lamb shank after we had finished the fish I refused thr meal. I told the manager I had no intention of paying for the dinner and I wanted to see the hotel manager. Eventually before we left the food and beverage manager of the hotel came out I explained what happened - he apologized which did not help in any way and said this is not what we should've expected. I told him I would not pay for the dinner and he said he understands and we ran as fast as we can out of this madhouse. in conclusion do not contemplate going near this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyAverage at best.
ย The diners next to me had a steak and he said to me that he could cook something better at home... I was used to the old Carlyle. this isn't it.

Underwhelming food, okay service, and much ado about tableware. Even with "prixe fixe" Restaurant week $39 2- course lunch you'll pay a server tip and captain tip, and when you tell them your dessert doesn't taste right, they won't refund you for it or offer to switch it out. So many better options for a classy, expensive lunch, don't bother coming here.

It's a nice enough space of course, given that it's in the Carlyle hotel, but the food & drink are very overpriced given that they are nothing to write home about. My friends & I went for brunch. I tried the pumpkin-ricotta raviolo (which is a single raviolo for $27) as an app and another friend tried the avocado toast (which she asked to be topped with egg whites instead of a poached egg), both were good but we have had better elsewhere. I had the salmon eggs Benedict as a main--the English muffin was hard and the poached egg was overcooked. My friends tried the roasted eggplant over bulgar, which they said was just all right. For drinks, one friend had a mocktail (which she liked, but was $25!), another had a gin & tonic ($28!) and I had their "Mr Gray" cocktail (also $25--this was very strong but the taste only ok). Given the high price point, we were fairly disappointed with the quality. Came out to over $90 per person. I've come to the Carlyle before a few years ago for dinner and I wasn't that impressed then either; don't think I'll be returning. There are so many better restaurants in NYC that are better value and quality.

I hate to say it but it's like "a new paint job on an old clunker." I could do a drink by drink and course by course rundown of why this fell short of my expectations...but the truth is that those who are mimicking the warm, lounge-y Americana dining rooms of the 60s like the Polo Bar or 4 Charles Prime, are doing it better than the original. From the menu to the service, it all feels tired. It's a shame because it has/has so much potential.

They lost my reservation and didn't ask for a vaccination card. ย The margarita was great...but $29?The food looked good, and even my water glass was beautiful, but the roast chicken and olive oil whipped potatoes were virtually tasteless. ย (And I don't have Covid.)I skipped dessert.
