Great Evening
The food and service were both incredible. The dining area was beautiful and all employees were friendly and professional. Anybody going to New Orleans need to make it a point to eat at Dooky Chase.

Fabulous fried chicken in a friendly atmosphere of locals and tourists. This felt like a part of real New Orleans culture.

This restaurant is about great creole food and civil rights history. The current owners made the rounds to all the tables in our dinning room the day we were there. They are restoring the room on the second floor that was used for civil rights action planning by leaders including Martin Luther King, Ralph Abernathy, John Lewis and many others. They are planning to have the room ready for public viewing by Juneteenth 2024. I had the seafood platter and it was delicious. When our waitress saw me taking a picture of my wife by a manikin in full Zulu Mardi Gras dress, she offered to take a pic of my wife and I together! I appreciated that and took her up on her offer to be our photographer. I was too full for dessert!
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite NOLA restaurant.
Beautiful dining room, gorgeous art, amazing food and service. Six days of restaurants, and this was my favorite. Will return.
Be the first to ReplyA fine experience
The formal dining room is elegantly set, the white linens contrasting with colorful paintings lining the walls and two elaborate Mardi Gras costumes in the middle. We had the famous fried chicken and the seafood platter, both done just right; even the stewed okra was good. A wine suggestion was listed with each dish, so we had splits of Prosecco, an excellent choice. Service was very professional and friendly.

We arrived for our lunch at 11:25 AM for an 11:30 reservation. We were seated after waiting in line for other to be seated ahead of us. We were seated in a French revival interior room in mustard yellow with white trim and multiple colorful paintings. The chairs were comfortable and also mustard yellow with the tables covered in white tablecloths. The glasses and flatware are standard restaurant supply items. The wine menu is small but reasonably priced. The lunch menu has a selection of soups and salads, sandwiches and main courses. I had the Creole gumbo and the red beans and rice which comes with red beans and rice and 2 pieces of fried chicken. You to get the choice of white, dark or mixed. My wife had the 3 pieces of fried chicken. Dooky Chase is known for their fried chicken and it is very good. The red beans and rice were very flavorful and was seasoned very well. It is the best version of red beans and rice I have had. My wife had mustard greens as a side. These were also delicious. The gumbo had a medium dark roux, chicken, shrimp and 2 types of sausage. I found it very tasty. Its price is a little expensive for the amount served when compared to other gumbos in New Orleans. The weight staff was attentive. We enjoyed hour meals. If you have not been you should go at least once.
Be the first to ReplyShould have been better!
We were excited to eat at this restaurant steeped in tradition. Sadly, our meal was not what it should have been. Stuffed shrimp were good but served on a bed of cold fried potatoes. And the red beans and rice were served at basically room temperature! How do you not keep red beans piping hot. The server did ask if we wanted more but by then we were half way through the meal. But she could have offered a dessert for our poor experience which would have been a kind gesture that left us feeling like they cared. But no! I doubt they even read their reviews as the place is very busy. But there are WAY better restaurants in New Orleans and I would not recommend this place.
Be the first to Replywonderful food in a lovely setting
this one had been recommended and we couldn't agree more. Terrific food. A surprise were all the paintings, artwork and photos, including one that showed Obama. This restaurant is a bit outside the main stream but totally worth going to. You must have reservations. Our service was impeccable
Be the first to ReplyPoor reservation system
We tried for weeks to get a reservation. Almost every day the reservation calendar was unresponsive to getting a time, whether it was first of the day or last of the day. So we drove to the restaurant and asked for a table for two. We were asked if we had a res and said no because it was impossible to get a res using their online system. The hostess explained that it was not possible to get a res more than 7 days in advance and if the system was not responding to requests for a res, that meant they had none for the day. Very poor and confusing reservation system. While speaking with the hostess we noticed a half dozen tables for two were set up but not being used. We won’t bother coming back to Dooky Chase restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyA historic restaurant must in New Orleans
A institution in New Orleans since 1941. It's a very nice and historic restaurant with lots of history including visits from US presidents and other big name folks and stars. It has classy interiors and the servers are very polite and well groomed in their button up shirts and ties. I felt bad I came in t shirt and shorts and should have been more well dressed. The gumbo was light and thin and bursting w/ flavor and the soup was not heavy like a lot of places that serve gumbo. The fried chicken was cooked just right but I personally prefer Willie Mae's down the block! What you are really here to eat is their " Shrimp Clemenceau" that had shrimps, potatoes and full of garlic flavor! The oil and sauce all over the shrimp! So delicious! I would go back to just eat this again!

I stopped by with several friends cause of the positive reviews. We got there right at opening without a reservation. The hostess was wonderful and we got our drinks at the bar with great service overall. When we were able to be seated, 40 minutes went by without any service. We eventually asked another waitress if anyone was assigned to our table and her demeanor/reply was one of the rudest interactions I’ve ever had. While we were still willing to continue waiting for our actual server up to that point, it honestly pushed us into just finishing our drinks and leaving early. For management, the hostess and Terry did nothing wrong!
Be the first to ReplyProud History, Fantastic Food
This restaurant has an important place in the history of the civil rights movement. Many strategies were formulateed by civil rights leaders on its second floor. The restaurant is much more formal than I had anticipated, highly professional servers, beautiful artworks, well distanced tables. The food! Oh my the food. Why oh why did I only order two pieces of fried chicken - the best I have ever had. The skin so crispy and tasty, the meat so tender not greasy. Dooky Chase asks patrons to dress business casual. Sadly it had plenty of people who treated it like a KFC in shorts and t's. There were also plenty who matched the environment casual yet respectful - a sports jacket and chinos - is that too hard?
Be the first to ReplyGood Food… Great Tradition
This restaurant is a New Orleans tradition, a title rightfully earned. The history of who has eaten at Dooky Chase's is entertainment you can really enjoy while visiting this restaurant. Don't miss the sidewalk and the wall art. The atmosphere and service were a strong 5/5. Very pleasant ambiance. The bar's products were also excellent. The food had mostly highs. Appetizers: The Oyster Norman 5/5 excellent as was the Crab Cake with Fried Green Tomato. The Dooky's toast was just ok. Our entrees were the Pompano 5/5, the Shrimp Clemenceau 5/5, and the Duck 5/5. All three were highly praised. We also ordered the Grillades and Grits 2.5/5. Three of our party ordered that and all three were disappointed. The grits were very good, as was the creole sauce, but the veal used in the dish was very fatty. We normally think of thin, pounded-out veal for Grillades, but instead large fatty pieces were served. The veal wasn't tough, just not a pleasant chew. In spite of that one dish our visit was very pleasant and we will definitely be back.

We went here after reviewing bob’s in New Orleans. The staff is very nice and the food was good, but the service was painfully slow. My husband’s appetizer and meal came out before I even got my appetizer! Clearly they are struggling with staffing, which is par for the course due to the pandemic. The staff they had appeared to be working their butts off! We ended up tipping 20% because they were literally running from table to table and doing their best. We plan on retuning to New Orleans for Easter, but I think we may pass on this restaurant next time.
Be the first to ReplyLovely , leisurely celebration
We are life long Louisiana residents and this was our first time eating here and it did not disappoint!! In fact, it exceeded our expectations in a Big way!! We did call a few days ahead and got our reservation for 6 as we were celebrating our youngest sons 21st birthday. The table was ready and we were seated promptly. The place was very neat and clean and had some great historic pictures. For appetizers we had the gumbo that had some spicy boudin in it that was excellent. We also had the crab cakes that were really tasty and fresh with lump crabmeat. My son and I had the Big Dookie which is the 14 oz ribeye. Mine was a tad bit overcooked and his was cooked perfect. Really tender and delicious. Our group had the grillades and grits, pompano fish, Dookie chicken, and the veal panne. It was all really good. We even had a Louisiana Merlot wine, GUMBO, that was surprisingly tasty and was a good recommendation from our waitress. We had all of the deserts : pecan pie, peach cobbler, praline bread pudding with ice cream. They were all devoured. We had a terrific waitress and we were even greeted by one of the owners to check on our dinner. Simply put - FIRST CLASS and we had a very memorable evening. Thank you DOOKY CHASE!!

I had been looking forward to this place for awhile. We had a 6:30 reservation on Friday. We got seated and wait at least 10 minutes to get some water. Another 10 for the server. In the mean time another table got sat beside us. They obviously knew people because the server and a couple other staff hugged them. They got their drinks and ordered who’re the server ever took our drink order. We got the beet salad which was excellent. The dressing is rather spicy so pour it on with caution. We then waited and waited for our food. The table beside us got their fried chicken and finished eating before our food even arrived. We never saw the server to ask about the delay so we asked the hostess. She told us there was big parties that came in and our food was behind them. After over an hour in the restaurant we got our food and my redfish was so over cooked it was shriveled in dried out it was inedible. We asked for the manager she did apologize and took care of the entrees. I ended up eating a bowl of gumbo. It was fine nothing great and the crab was in shells so you are digging through your soup for crabmeat. Not good. Food and service were just a 2 star. I would not go back.

We had high expectations for dinner. Had 6:30 reservation, was seated right away. It was busy we waited about 10 minutes for water and server. We ordered beet salad and our entrees. Redfish and fried chicken. Salad came out fairly quick and was delicious. I highly recommend it if you go. Now the not so good part. We then waited for about 45 minutes for our entrees. Now the table next to us sat right after us they also ordered fried chicken and a shrimp dish. They had their food and dessert before we even saw the server again. I felt like they totally forgot we were there. No offer for refill or another glass of wine. Then when we asked for the server she still took several minutes to stop and give us the excuse of a large party was ahead of our order. Should have stopped by the table and explained, offered something to hold us till meal came. When it arrived the chicken was good. Nothing special. Mustard greens were so so. The fish was warm, over cooked and dry. So we spoke with the manager and they comped the entrees so not a total bust. Just didn’t live up to the hype. Gumbo Shop and Mother’s were much better food and service.

We (husband and I) decided to visit on o Friday, my husband called to verify the hours and then made a last minute reservation. Our reservation was for 6:00 and when arrived were seated promptly. The restaurant wasn’t crowded but more customers started to arrive as time passed. There’s so much history with this restaurant and the proof is in the photos on the wall, while you’re waiting take some time to admire the art. We ordered the BBQ shrimp as an appetizer, two chicken dinners, an extra side of potato salad and an Arnold Palmer. Honestly, the chicken was ok…nothing special BUT those sides were on point! I will admit that we should’ve tried at least one of their authentic creole dishes because those dishes looked amazing! Total bill including tip was $73.67. We were definitely satisfied and will return next time in NOLA. Tips: call and make a reservation, please be aware there is a dress code (gentlemen must take off any hats/caps)…the hostess did politely ask my husband to remove his hat….the code is on their website.

I wanted to try this restaurant so bad given its history and reputation even though it cost $40 for Ubers there and back. The setting doesn’t disappoint with its elegance and artwork. It’s cool to see the famous folks who have been there in the past. We had the stuffed shrimp, rice and beans, mustard greens, fried chicken and macaroni. The macaroni was my favourite followed by the greens. To be honest I wasn’t blown away by the food but it was tasty and I enjoyed the whole experience so would recommend a visit.

We've spent a wonderful lunch at Dooky Chase. We arrived without reservation but they found a place for us, people were so kind, fantastic, with recommendations, food excellent! really worth it
Be the first to ReplyThis is nowhere near a normal, standard restaurant
I read the Trip Advisor reviews in the Readers Digest list of top "local' restaurants in each state. Dooky Chase is the selection for Louisiana and I am not at all surprised. But as I read some of the reviews that were negative, I thought, huh? It reminds me of the year a Times picayune restaurant critic wrote a critical review of the restaurant. I wrote a letter to the editor, from Paris, France, saying she might as well have well gone down, planted an American flag on the neutral ground on Canal Street, and set it on fire. I mean that. People, get what this restaurant is and what it has stood for for all of the years it has existed, and it DOES serve fabulous food: If you are not satisfied with what you are served, call your server and tell him or her. I promise you you'll get what you want. Am I prejudiced? You bet I am. I wrote Leah's biography, published in 2002, and interviewed current chef Edgar Chase IV (Dook), when he was studying at Cordon Bleu in Paris. I think I know this family as well as anybody who is actually not in the family. And I consider them my family. But first and foremost, the folks at Dooky Chase intend to please their customers. It is in the expression of each family member's face. every server, and even Mr. Lloyd, the Security Guard at the door. If you had a negative experience at this restaurant. I urge you to give it a second try. It is purely and simply impossible to not be pleased at Dooky Chase. Just ask, if you got something that wasn't what you expected.

Service great. Drinks and wine great. Gumbo great. Entrees of shrimp cococheau and the fried chicken which was the most highly recommended, were just average. The shrimp dish was nothing more than a pile of diced potatoes (dried out) despite the description of it being shrimp , potatoes, peas and garlic butter. I barely ate mine. Fried chicken wasn’t bad but Popeyes is better. I think they are resting on their laurels. It’s gonna catch up to them.

We spent almost an hour visiting with Leah Chase when we first visited about 7 yrs. ago....what a special lady and restaurant she built...such rich history as well....do not miss this place!
Be the first to Reply2 star for the history only!
I really wanted to like this place. However, let me give you the 411. First off, we did not have a reservation, and that seemed to be a slight issue. However, there were tons of seats open, and we got there 10 minutes after they opened. What's the problem???? Once she said we were okay, then she says we can't bring in our water bottles. Now, it's like 100% humidity outside at 90 degrees, and my water bottle was empty! Why was she so worried about that??? Ugh!!! My friend left his water bottle right outside the entry. Odd. The next issue was my mid-drift shirt that WAS NOT a mid-drift shirt. They have all these "rules" about clothing, but people came in with their breasts out, backs out, bras showing, and looking like they just rolled out of bed. This older guy looked like he just left the gym, and she had no problem. However, my legs and the slight showing of a very, very, very small portion of my stomach took the hostess out of her mind. I was very disappointed to see other people dressed way worse than me being greeted with a perfect smile. However, if pulled my shorts down, tucked in my shirt, and tried my best to just breath and be kind to the older lady barking orders at me. Ultimately, I am not disrespectful to my elders. Now, we are sitting. The server was really good. She was nice, and I have no complaints. Her service slowed down as they got busy, but it's all good. I used to be a server too, so I understand the hustle. Now the food. Where do I start? How does gumbo not have okra? Weird. Where is the seasoning???? Very weird! Why does the chicken taste dry with no seasoning, but it is their staple???? The shrimp and "crab" was more like a big piece of shrimp with a mix of something inside. I live in MD, and I know what crab looks like, and the "crab" they were serving was not crab. I did like the lavender drink! However the pairing for the chicken came out 30 minutes later, and we were over all of it by then. Honestly, I am not hard to please, but this place was beyond disappointing. I wonder if the owner Leyah Chase took all the good recipes to the grave with her. God bless her soul. May she rest in peace, but the legacy left behind really needs to work it out. Would I suggest going? Yes and no. I only say yes because of the historical element, but if you want good food, don't do it. Just go and support, I guess, but don't go super hungry or in need of good food.

I love the gumbo, stewed okra and tomatoes, and hush puppies. Make sure to walk up to the counter to make a reservation; don’t sit in the lobby waiting.
