NOT IMPRESSED
--Ordered garlic bread and 2 appitizers. Asked that the garlic bread be served 1st. All 3 came at the same time. --Garlic bread had too much cheese, not enough garlic, and somewhst soggy. --Onion soup way too salty. --Ribeye was ordered medium rare, came medium. No marble and not tender. --Mushrooms also too salty. --Bread pudding not just warm, not hot enough.

Its nondescript shopping strip building belies Dear John's nature as a prime example of a vanished Hollywood night life. Hard by was MGM's Culver City lot where Frank Sinatra was among many stars filming movies. Folk lore maintains that Dear John's was opened at the behest of Sinatra to provide a place for him to have dinner after acting, singing and dancing at the studio all day. It's dark-red interior, Italian-American menu and the generous cocktails--not to mention the extremely professional wait staff--evoke the glamour of that vanished age for the span of a dinnertime. Its former Rat Pack habitués can be easily imagined in the rowdy darkness.
Be the first to ReplyA safe place to enjoy an excellent meal during pandemic. Great food anytime.
The safety measures taken to comply with necessary protocol are excellent. Dine outside and enjoy great cocktails, and delicious food. Onion soup, fish selections, steak, all worth trying. Enjoy the banana split for desert.
Be the first to ReplyNone of us had been here. Glad that we came!
I had the rack of lamb. It was cooked exactly the way that I asked. Others had the filet, NY steak, rib eye. Everyone was thrilled. We had the shrimp cock tail which looked really good. The French onion soup looked tasty. The Caesar salad was perfect. The side dish of corn was really delicious. The German potatoes was also really tasty. It was very nice on the decorated patio. Hank our main waiter and wine server was brilliant. He was VERY professional. His supporting staff were all really good. This is headed by two wonderful chefs. Hans Rockenwagner and Josiah Citrin are two of the best and most talented chefs in Los Angeles. You should make a point of going while they are still open. They are closing in April 2021. It is not inexpensive. BUT the food and the service are worth it.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing ~ No Reason to Go for a Special Occasion. Can Understand why it’s called Dear John’s.
We were looking forward to celebrating a belated 25th Anniversay (because of 🦠). They were kind enough to seat us indoors. The outdoor patio area was very exposed and no ambience (plastic molded chairs, no umbrellas, etc.) The hostess was very kind and offered her congratulations on our Anniversary. We asked for a 4 top since there were 3 of us. With the black curtains drawn, the atmosphere was nice, but with the staff going in and out to serve the patio guests, the bright light kept hitting us, and I had to ask for the curtains to be drawn. Drinks were excellent. The dishes were good, but honestly nothing especially memorable. With Hans and Josiah at the helm, we honestly expected superb variations on the classics we ordered. We were quite surprised when a restaurant of this caliber (which is why we chose it) did not make any attempt to recognize our very special occasion with any congratulatory gesture ~ drink or dessert or anything. Again, this was indeed disappointing since my wife and I both know the Chefs. Perhaps the COVID restrictions were a distraction to Hank, our server, and the staff, but it should not reflect on the courtesy and welcoming appreciation we have grown to expect from an expensive high end establishment.
Be the first to ReplyBetter to dine at the real thing
This is an overt nostalgia trip but artificial. The building and decor are original as is the menu. But in reality it is pure entertainment industry. Packed and popular with high noise level (even though amplified music is of the past era). Cesar salad tableside was prepared causally and inexactly, and ended up creamy and without anchovy flavor. Ample portion, thought. Sandabs were good, as were sautéed rather than batter-fired, but drowning in butter sauce. Potatoes also drowning in butter sauce. There are several old steakhouses around that are alternatives. The best thing is the captain, who seems to be everywhere, courteous and lends a personal touch.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and Service, Dark, Noisy Atmosphere
Best beef I have ever had in many years. Menu is ala carte and prices are somewhat steep, but an experience worth having.Every course of the meal was exceptionally delicious and pleasantly served. Reservations required and limited parking. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyThrow Back to Easier Times - Dear John's works!
Dear John's is the dark wooded "cool" bar into which perhaps a Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe may enter. You almost expect to see Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack sitting in the corner! Small, intimate, wonderfully "old fashioned" and with an old fashion "steak menu" that is prepared with 21st Century care and concern. Service is the staff from Melisse! Thank you - they are wonderful. The entire experience is a great time with great food and perhaps some well made "old fashion" dishes that you can't easily find, especially as well prepared as here. We tried much of the menu and it was all good!
Be the first to ReplyLike Musso and Frank's with a smaller but better menu
Typical old fashiond 'steak' house though we did not have steak, a good gin martini in a sensible glass, well executed classics usually with an subdued flash of flavour. Service is sutibly sumpteous and the place is of course dark - almost pitch.
