Opera visit
We came here Saturday night to eat just before our visit to see La Boheme. The restaurant is beautiful and staff were very pleasant. The food was very good. We ate the starter and main course before the performance and then returned in the interval for pudding and coffees,I also had a negroni which was delicious. I would definitely return
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing and over priced meal it ruined our experiance
We were eagerly anticipating eating in the restaurant prior to the opera.Initial impressions were good lovely restaurant nice atmosphere and very pleasant servers. The starter of Goats chees and beetroot was presented in a very arty way but tastewise I have eaten better. The pastry on the Beef Wellington very soggy we did mention this to the server however we were assured this was how it was served but I have never eaten it like this the best course was dessert but you can't go wrong with cheese can you..We asked for the bill and thats where it became very distasteful the discressionary service charge which really should be pointed out to the customer as its not legally binding and it wasn't and along with a tip its a way of getting more money out of the customer we asked for it to be removed which they did but the atmosphere became very cool and it didn't help that the coffee they served was cold and I asked for another one.By this time I just wanted to leave the whole experiance was ruined it was an expensive meal but really not worth it.We will never eat their again.
Be the first to ReplySmooth and efficient restaurant
We both enjoyed our food here and the staff were very polite. We had to order in advance and so the food arrived very quickly. During each interval our next course or drink was waiting on the table for us. It is clearly well rehearsed and runs like clockwork. I guess the downsides for me were the cost of the food and also each interval was taken up in the Crush Room which didn't allow any time for a comfort break if that was needed. The decor is very fitting with the Royal Opera House - opulent and grand.

The service was wonderful. Polite, witty, quick, and very professional. The food was tender, and it’s presentation was spectacular.
Be the first to ReplyService service service
We went to The Royal Opera House to see Sleeping Beauty and decided to chance a meal in the Crush Room. We needn’t have worried, it was amazing from start to finish. The service, attention to detail and personal consideration in all aspects was second to none. Would highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyDinner before the Ballet
Good to reserve a table for the performance and pre order your food. Eat pre and have dessert or coffee during the interval as you have your booked table for the night. Impressive room and menu sounded great. The main courses we had didn't disappoint. Excellent quality lamb and fish all served promptly by by attentive staff. However desserts were at the other end of the scale. The exotic fruit pannacotta was like mango gloopy wall paper paste with some finely diced undiscernible fruit over the top and two coconut shavings. The chocolate tart was to rich to eat even the small slice provided. Looking around there were a lot of desserts just left or half eaten. We would try starter and main in future
Be the first to ReplyMake yourself at home during opera night
Good to reserve a table for the duration of the opera, good was very good, wine (Sancerre) excellent, service good, I would come again in the context of the opera
Be the first to ReplyDinner before the opera!
The ambience is magnificent, and the service exemplary, whilst the food which has to be ordered in advance was not quite up to the same standard.
We duly ordered our meal as required upon booking our table, but were notified shortly before the day that the menu had now been altered, thus we were obliged to change our choices. Upon arrival I was notified that my starters of oysters was no longer available….so had a so called lobster salad, beautifully presented, but hard to find the lobster! Then there was confusion over my choice of the second course. I chose to go without…my husband’s crab starter was not up to standard, but he really enjoyed the fish pie, tiny though it was. We shared and enjoyed a cheeseboard, which was certainly adequate for two people. I wasn’t at all happy, truly disappointed, and to be fair, we didn’t have to pay for the so called lobster salad. However, the performance of La Traviata was superb!
Top prices for average food and service
The menu choice is limited, the prices are high and the food is ok. But the dishes come without vegetables. Service was well-intentioned but not the crispness one should expect at such prices and surroundings. Very disappointing on a big night out.
Be the first to ReplyWorst Rerstaurant I have eaten at in years.
My wife and I attended a wonderful performance of Coppelia at the Royal Opera House last week.
We thoght it would make a special evening to eat in the Crush Room and spread our meal over the early part of the performace. What a mistake we made. In the Crush Room you have to order your meals in advance. I ordered a starter of Brown Shrimps with fine beans, tomatoes and olives. This arrived on a stone cold plate with a pile of shrimps that had been 'thrown' on to a piled mush of ingredients with a sauce squirted haphazardly around the plate. As it was so heavily chilled nothing had any taste apart from the squirted sauce.
My main course was Roast Duck with cucumber mint and spring onion. Again so cold that the duck was just a hard slab of meat, only this time the cucumbrer, mint and spring onion made a solid mush.
For Dessert I had Apple Tart Tatin with Cinnamon Cream. To call this Tart Tatin was an insult to even a third rate Chef. It was a puff pastry case, about the size of a cupcake, filled with what looke like tinned apple - served cold of course.
As you can imagine after this I looked forward, in the interval, to a hot cup of coffee with petit fours. The pot of coffee was tepid and the petit fours two minute pieces of what looked like chocolate brownie.
The meal for the two of us, with a glass of wine each and a bottle of water was 162.51 including service. For that amount of money we could have eaten pre-theatre dinner at any of the local Michelin starred restaurants. Shame on you ROH we will never eat there again
Beautiful surroundings - Cold Food Disappointment
I book the Crush Room for my mum and I as pre-theatre dinner before we enjoyed the spectacular performance of the Nutcracker
The room is stunning with an air of grandeur - you can imagine ladies and gents in their finery dining before their favourite ballet. But alas that is were the experience ends - the canapés were the best part of the meal - the starter was salmon which I expected to be cold. My mum and I both ordered duck and to state we were disappointed would be an understatement- it was cold and the skin on cold duck is not palatable which was accompanied by cold fine beans and orange segments with a strange tasting sauce on the side. The dessert was a slab of chocolate tart with a translucent pistachio cream.
We pre-ordered our meals in advance of the event and there was no indication that meal would be served cold - to pay nearly £150 for cold offerings is not acceptable - no matter the surroundings. If I had known I would have booked another restaurant round the corner ie Rules or Clos Maggiore
An amazing experience
Ate here along side seeing Cycle 4 of the Ring. Food was excellent with, beautifully presented and tasted incredible
Be the first to ReplyThought they were improving but no
I have been going to the Royal Opera House for many years. Seldom have I eaten there as the food is very expensive and quality is mediocre to poor. I decided to give them another try-------mistake. On 26 Sept, meal (duck) was actually quite good. On September 29, I just ordered a smoked salmon sandwich from the champagne bar----------dreadful-------bread was literally wet. On 1 October, I again went to the Crush room. Perhaps the worst meal that I have ever been served in my life. Roast beef was full of gristle and fat. Meat had the consistency of very old leather. Worst, the side dishes were inedible.................salad was coarsely chopped iceburg lettice with no dressing.
While I love the ROH and they do many things well, food is not one of these
Elegance and convenience
The Crush Room is the best way to go to the opera or ballet. You dine in chandeliered elegance with the Grand Tier seats just behind you and eat in the intervals. The food is cold but well executed and tastey. The ultimate theatrical dinner.
Be the first to ReplyOk food, fast service, could be so much more
We had cocktails, starter and main pre-performance, and dessert and coffee during the interval.
Room is nice and easy enough to find. A little frustrating to have such a nice piano in it left to no use at all.
Service was good, staff is very fast to deliver you the already prepared plates of cold food.
Food itself is nothing to be crazy about. The avocado prawn starter was blunt. The smoked salmon was even more plain. Finally the tiny plate of fruits priced is a little overpriced for what's served.
For the same amount of money you have tons of better alternatives within walking distance making it easy to attend the performance without stress.
Nothing is bad, nothing is that great either, place is probably more for an older crowd.
We will not be going back.
Our Children's special day out ruined
We brought our twin 6 year old daughters to the ROH from West Sussex to see the matinee performance of Alice in Wonderland. We had booked a box and brought a friend and had lunch in the Crush room. We had not realised that the food would be cold but that apart it was simply dreadful. Both myself and one of my daughters had very upset stomachs. We spent over £300 on our tickets and even more on an awful lunch. So a total cost for the day of well over £800 for the day including our travel. To end it with a six year old in tears in
the bathroom is very disappointing to say the least. My little daughter deserves an apology to say the very least. I had expected far better from the ROH.
