Creative cuisine
The menu is very creative with so many unique options that deciding what to have for dinner was difficult. While the pork ribs and the gaia iichiko were delicious, the best part of the meal was a seasonal dessert which consisted of a shiso sponge, rubarb foam with lychee granite and lemon lattice. It looked beautiful and the combination of flavors and textures made for an exquisite finish to the meal! Nishan provided fantastic service and I look forward to returning on my next trip to D.C.
Be the first to ReplySavored each morsel
Chef Pepe Moncayo was reluctant to confirm he was the chef until we assured home we *loved* his food at Cranes. His interpretation of Spanish Kaiseki is so delicious that I chewed every bite slowly so I could savor each and every morsel. Lunch was very reasonable, especially the bento box. My cousin's seafood ramen made our eyes roll to the back of our heads. Even the cappuccino was on point. Our server, Nishan, saw us eyeing the cherry blossom dessert (soon to be discontinued next week) and convinced us to try it. It was shiso sponge, rhubarb foam, and lychee granite. No wonder they won Michelin awards in 2021 and 2022. I love the combination of a masterful intersection between two wonderful cuisines, quiet elegance of their space and warm service.
Be the first to ReplyFirst star experience in the USA
We have often eaten with 1-3 Michelin stars in Europe. This was our first in the USA. What is different? Firstly, the size. It is difficult to provide so many places with high quality. The atmosphere is casual, but you probably won't find guests in shorts and T-shirts in a Michelin-starred restaurant anywhere else. The fact that you are served the courses by different waiters is also different. Did that bother me? No, it depends on the food. We sat with a view of the kitchen, which was quiet and professional. At the beginning you could also see the chef. The food was very good, we tried omakase. At the beginning the dishes came a little too quickly, once the waiter wanted to clear away before my wife had finished, which is not acceptable. Afterwards the distance was OK. We chose the wine pairing. Sake and I are not friends, unfortunately not my taste. Minuti and St. Emilion were very good, the Portuguese white wine was not my favorite. The sommelier was very nice, as was our waiter. Overall a very good culinary experience. I would have liked to have had a little more time to eat, but hey, thatโs USA.
Be the first to ReplyNice restaurant week dinner
Came here for restaurant week. $65 set menu with 3 appetizers, 2 mains and dessert. Kabocha hummus was super good - interesting mix of flavors. Ramen with lobster broth and shrimp was fine but noodles a bit too soft. Best was the fried rice with iberico pork. So flavorful and packed a bit of a spice punch. Desert was a type of chocolate mouse with salted goats milk ice cream, caramel and crunchy rice puffs. Very tasty. Service was a bit too fast but polite and professional.
Be the first to ReplyEspectacular and good prices
The best restauran in D.C. , we went in dec 31 for new year dinner. My family and friends enjoy delicius fusion flavors from Spain and orient.
Be the first to ReplyWow, wow, wow!
My husband and I had a great experience at Cranes. We both had the tasting menu with wine pairing. The food was delicious and the pairings were really good. We were pleasantly surprised by the Turkish rose and the sake was the best we have ever had. We thought the price 118+65 was very reasonable especially for what we got. Service was excellent! Itโs pretty impressive that a restaurant of this size is able to turn out consistently good food and run such a smooth operation. We would go back.
Be the first to ReplyA night to remember!
This was a unique experience for all the senses! We were celebrating my milestone birthday. The combinations of tastes and structures was amazing.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing dinner - splurge and get the omakase!
Had a fantastic dinner at Cranes Spanish Kaiseki, that will rank among the best overall meal experiences I've had. We were hesitant to try the omakase menu for fear of it being too much food, but the server suggested, correctly, that it was very well balanced and that if had gone a la carte we would likely order too much and spend near as much. Nearly every course was amazing, with inventive combinations of ingredients and presentation drawing on Japanese, Spanish and other influences. Suggested saki and wine pairings were perfect. Service was very, very good. While this was fine dining in food quality, service and pricing, the room has a modern, open vibe, that made for an un-stuffy experience. Highly recommend for a special occasion dinner in DC.

Had some misses but overall a fantastic innovative and tasty menu - wine list is on the skimpy side and they did have some service glitches - but overall a great meal
Be the first to ReplyChurros to die for!
Superb service of exquisite, simple food. Great sake menu. We really enjoyed our visit and our five year old was very pleased with the dishes. We enjoyed the bok choy, the eggplant, the scallops and the Dorad special. Luscious cocktails and fantastic Junmai Daiginjo, lightly chilled. To top it off we had the churros with a combination of warm, chocolate, and warm caramel, that was out this world delicious. A scoop of caramel at the end!
Be the first to ReplyAnniversary celebration!
My spouse and I celebrated our 20th anniversary with their signature 10 course omakase menu with wine pairings at lunch. It was a wonderful experience. We were pleased with each dish as they presented with unexpected deliciousness. My favorite was the raman noodles with scallop and my spouse loved the hake! The waiter was fantastic and we even spoke with Chef Moncayo!! It was super cool. The desserts were amazing as well. Definitely recommend the wine pairing as they are essential for the full experience. The only negative thing was the taste of the tap water. Ordered bottle water!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing experience if you have the $$$
Went on my own and chose a table seat so I could enjoy the Omakase. Also went with the wine pairing. It was a wonderful experience. Would do again when I save up the $$$. Service was excellent. Sometimes a little hard to hear but nothing a โsorry, can you repeat thatโ doesnโt solve.
Be the first to ReplyCould be five star
All tapas at the bar were inspired. Only drawback was the Wagyu tepanyaki. Great flavor; well cooked; but half of it was too tough to eat. Beet salad (!) was amazing.
Be the first to ReplySuperb Food and Service
My wife and I had the chef's ten-course meal and drink pairing. Each course was a revelation, perfectly executed, intriguing combinations, and expert paring with a wine or a sake. Service was knowledgeable and always on time. The bill was just over $500 but this is well worth it. Go if you get a chance. I don't know where the other reviewers ate at, but this was every bit as good as the celebrity chef's restaurants in every way.
Be the first to ReplyIt's a long way from very good to extraordinary...
Nothing bad to say, don't misinterpret it. Everything was very good. But when you eat at a Michelin 1-star restaurant you expect the extraordinary. We started out with the Jamon: good but clearly sub-par. The price was contained, but why? Again, you are dining at Crane expecting only top-notch ingredients. The duck gyozas were good but unremarkable (meat was overcooked and textureless). I got the skate fish that was pretty decent but could have been cooked at a seaside taverna. Only the octopus was really outstanding and memorable. The Wagyu beef was very nicely presented and very good, but again I have eaten better. We finished with delicious churros. Attentive service. A bit slow with the food.
Be the first to ReplyTasting menu
The tasting menu was good although despite the chopsticks and saki it didnโt have quite the Japanese flair we were expecting. I suppose theyโre not advertising sushi so I shouldnโt necessarily be expecting it. The highlight of our 10 course omakase menu was the scallop and maybe also the young Turkish sommelier.
Be the first to ReplySomewhat Odd Customer Service. Good Food.
The food was good, the service was mostly good, and then there were some odd parts. 75% of the size of the check is a QR code asking people to pay using Apple Pay. Fair enough, so I did that and after hitting pay i received the emailed receipt and it said you're good to go, so I went to leave. However, the server came up to me as I was leaving and acted like I was trying to walk out without paying. Um? I didn't set up this type of QR code system. The restaurant did. So Cranes asks you to pay online and then acts surprised or offended when you do? You get better service paying using a QR code at some random bars in DC -- just odd. Food was good, but we went for a birthday and I don't think I could recommend it for something like that.

Impressive food and solid service from this 1 Michelin star restaurant in center city DC. Spanish flair and innovative takes on their cuisine paired with attentive service make for an enjoyable dining experience. Certainly worth a visit, especially if you are into Spanish food!
Be the first to ReplyGood dinner - food, ambiance, service and friends
Open restaurant, laid back feel. Here's the run down on the food. Tapas: Dorado sashimi - table loved it, order three plates. My wife and I shared oysters - delicious but disappointed we only received two. Eggplant confit was perfectly prepared, nice complement to the Dorado and patatas bravas (table ordered three plates). My main dish was the Wagyu - quite certain it was American Wagyu (good but I have had better); I really enjoyed the shallot salad. Only negative on the evening - food wise - was the unaghi paella as my wife gave it the gladiatorial thumbs down.

The experience here was so worth it. The food was amazing. I highly recommend the Happy Hour so you can taste a lot of the food for a cheaper price as well as the drinks. Very classy spot. Good for first dates, couples, friends night out etc. Highly recommend.
Be the first to Reply$120 bucks for lunch and I'm at Silver Diner eating...
I don't know how I ended up getting the worst meal of all the reviews but here's my play by play of their most expensive tasing menu + the bok choy with manchego. Overall definitely not tasty definitely not worth the money. First course was the Hamachi -- usually a favorite of mine -- not here. The three pieces, the size of my fingernail, tasted slightly like herring and fishy. Like fishy as Hamachi should not be. Second course was bok choy with manchego and frankly it was the best thing I had, but I ordered it in addition to the tasting menu. Was charred perfectly and the sauce was divine. Third course was the sun choke dumplings. Was SO looking forward to them because I'm a sun choke officionado -- so, so disappointed. Salty mush. Didn't taste the sun choke's delicate beautiful flavor at all. Just salt. Fourth was shrimp done two ways: soft-shell shrimp and a grilled shrimp. The grilled shrimp was raw, that's the fancy way of eating it, apparently, but not for me. The soft-shell shrimp was...interesting. Neither was great. A friend ordered the tempura shrimp and that looked much better...and cooked. Fourth course duck breast. Again, so excited - advertised to come with foie gras etc. the smoked sliver of duck breast came virtually raw and gristle that I had to spit out. And of course that was 30% of my duck breast so there's that. The foie gras was mingled with duck confit and in a cabbage roll. Not good at all. The cabbage was not seasoned and the duck inside was indistinguishable. Big mush tasteless cabbage with a squishy filling that had no flavor. I feel truly sorry for the duck that wasted its life on this travesty to the ingredient. I was at a business lunch but would normally have said something about how tasteless or disappointing everything was. I would go back and my friend, who had a different menu, wouldn't either.
