Living on the Peninsula all my life, has jaded me from seeking out Michelin starred restaurants except only on anniversaries and milestone birthdays. So, on my 28th Anniversary (one that is usually forgotten), I made a reservation for my husband and I at Chef TJ's. Here is a case of fine dining on the Peninsula that I have been remiss in experiencing. To atone, I will write a review which I hope will prod others into trying a place that has been around forever, is Michelin starred and is a unique, exquisite, and flavorful without the pretension of trying too hard. Chez TJ's offers one contemporary French, six course tasting menu, and the reasonable price of $125. They also have a weeknight four course menu at a lesser price. After dinner there on Saturday, I am looking forward to trying their weeknight offering. The dinner we had included food so delectable and fresh, I was surprised and delighted. Stan Michalski (an alumni of Quince) is the Executive Chef. His discernment and acumen are perfect for the space and audience. I anticipate only progress of the precision of his palette. From amuse bouche to entrée, Chef Michalski's courses were so flavorful and exquisitely presented that for a moment Iwas not looking out onto a street in Mountain View but transported to a restaurant in Napa or SF. The Australian Wagyu course was luxuriant and flavorful with a broth to meld the meat flavors together. Heavenly! Christine Johansen is the Pastry Chef. At a time when most restaurants are cutting back on even having a Pastry Chef, Ms. Johansen is a well-acknowledged addition. The delightful strawberry cheesecake dessert was so fragrant with fresh strawberries that it really knocked me out when it was set in front of me. And the additional chocolate and ice cream pastry course particularly welcome to my husband--a lover of rich desserts. Go to Chef TJ's and try them on any occasion. You will not be disappointed, and you will also skip a drive to SF or Napa.
Be the first to ReplyGreat dinner with the family for a birthday.
It's literally in a house so it felt somewhat cramped but the food was incredible and would highly recommend

We went here for Valentine's Day, and could not have been more impressed. A cute home converted into an upscale restaurant made for a romantic homie ambience. Service is formal and attentive. The menu was an inventive journey of courses which they made vegetarian for me.
Be the first to ReplyA little cute house in downtown Mountain View.
Looks very cozy from outside. This is my second time going there. This time we had Stan the new chef who started in January this year. Chef is very stiff and no personality towards customers, he showed up at our table for the first course (out of 6) and said something about the dish in a monotone voice, or maybe he was tired at 6:30pm? Who knows? Staffs are everywhere, friendly, typical of high end restaurant, attentive, and explained everything. Food is great with one exception of the beef that I thought didn't go too well with the green sauce.

We recently celebrated a family birthday at Chez TJ and had a wonderful experience. Unlike at other Michelin rated restaurants I have eaten at, I found the atmosphere very warm and we felt like part of the Chez TJ family. All the interactions with the wait staff felt authentic and personal instead of the 'scripted' service we have received at other places. And George, the owner, even spent some time with us and shared stories about the founding of his restaurant; we all loved it and made our time special. But now to the food: Simply put, it was delicious. I had heard good things about the new chef Stan before we went, and he and his team really delivered. Every course was a piece of art and firework of tastes. We had so much fun talking about all the flavors each of us tasted. Lastly, a word about the wine pairing, which I definitely recommend. We had a beautiful German Riesling and I texted the label to my dad in Germany, who is a wine aficionado. And even he was impressed about the quality being served: the GG on the label stands for 'Grosses Gewächs', the highest quality of wine made in Germany. In conclusion: Great job team Chez TJ, keep up the good work!!
Be the first to ReplyGreat service and romantic ambiance.
Prep yourself before coming here, especially when doing tasting menu. Wagyu is extra fee on the tasting menu and i was expecting it to be very good but it was on the salty side, rest of the menu were great (from bread /appetizer/dishes of rabbit/elk&dessert).Paid total of $1200+ for 3 person (could have gone to French Laundry lol). From my standpoint the price is way to high for whats being offered. Plenty of Parking spot accross the street though.
Be the first to ReplyVery intimate and romantic.
Food was amazing as well. Service was on point as you should expect it to be. Was a 2 hour tasting menu, and it was delicious. The wagyu was the highlight of the meal. Truffles were a little underwhelming but not enough to take off a star. Worth every penny.

Earlier this month I had an amazing dining experience at Chez TJ. I was accompanied by my daughter, sister and brother in law. We were celebrating my daughter's 30th birthday. Chef Stan delivered an outstanding variety of tasty dishes, one after the other. We were each very pleased with our food. The ambiance in the fireplace room was so warm and cozy. The service, impeccable. A lovely spot for any special occasion. Can't wait to go again!
Be the first to ReplyHad a lovely birthday dinner for my dear friend here.
As expected at a Michelin restaurant, the service was excellent and the food tasty. When dining here your only option is the chef tasting menu localized based on what is in season- we were here on a winter's evening. Since we were celebrating, they provided us with an extra dessert and the red carpet treatment. The main course venison was the star of the show and we upgraded to truffle risotto which was divine. Another favorite dish was the rabbit. The desserts were also exceptional. Didn't quite get to 5 stars as the service was at times slower than it needed to be, and not all the courses blew us away but we had an amazing experience here and would highly recommend for a special occasion if you have the means.
Be the first to ReplyWe had fish, beef, two rounds of dessert, and more.
Yummyyy. I was 100% full, food just the perfect amount. Pairing was great too. Seafood going with salt, sweet with sweet. The glass with the steak was full and oaked. The place was quiet with light music, decorated in a European style with abstract paintings. Candles on the table. Compared to the Michelin 1 star french cuisine I had in SF last year, this one in the southbay exceeded my expectation by so much!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing service, delicious food.
2.5 hours for tasting menu. Supplements: truffle risotto and wagyu steak
Be the first to ReplyWent for my mom's birthday.
Added in the truffle risotto. Overall would recommend; I think the food was very innovative and extremely tasty. Maybe a bit pricey, but that's the cost of Michelin French food. Will be back as their menu changes; would highly recommend
Be the first to ReplyVisit Chez TJ the day before Thanksgiving.
Nice location and decoration style. Staff are super friendly. Food is pretty good, especially the American wangu and fish. It's a good place to enjoy vacation. Would recommend it to friends.
Be the first to ReplyI never like leaving such few star reviews, but this
I never like leaving such few star reviews, but this restaurant did not meet expectations. It's price point for the food served/taste/quality was not acceptable. We frequent many michelin stars restaurants in California as well as fine dining locations. This restaurant has us scratching our heads. The food was not wow. Was just ok. Was not filling. Just a few small courses. And with a price tag at $250 per person plus, it's simply not acceptable. We gave it a try, and will not be returning OR recommending. I'd suggest other fine dining establishments in SF that are not only cheaper but come with so so so much more courses, quality, and wow factor. **Staff here was fabulous. We enjoyed the Somm & our waiter. Food and price point though is NOT it.
Be the first to ReplyA solid place but with no wow factors.
I have a gluten allergy which they accommodated by substituting both filling and more expensive dishes with... vegetables. I included photos of both the original dishes and their gf substitutes, as well as how the menu differed.I also can't really say this is a French restaurant, as no French dishes or even hints of them were served. More like Michelin cuisine, if that makes sense. The amuse bouche trio was good, if a bit sweet for the "fruit loop" and fruits in the right spoon. The caviar amuse bouche was pretty default, felt like they were trying to get their Michelin caviar obligation out of the way early. The lobster was well cooked, and the sauce was excellent. The sauce that went with the lobster was my favorite part of the dinner (which should tell you a lot).Lamb dish substituted for veggies. Not really sure why they couldn't offer lamb in a gf format, as the lamb was one of the most expensive parts of the menu that I didn't get.Palette cleanser was nice - I believe it was pineapple with a hibiscus infusion. The hibiscus part made it taste a bit chemically, but that could have just been the flower. The elk loin was very well cooked. Even the person in our dining group who doesn't usually eat things less cooked than medium well enjoyed it, and it was medium or medium rare. This would have been a standout except for the overpowering, slightly bitter sauce. It's a pretty standard steak sauce (forgetting the name) but didn't really go with the elk.The cheese tart.... Was more of a jam tart. You couldn't taste the cheese part (the middle part) at all because of the very sweet jam.The jelly with crumble was probably the most innovative gluten free substitution (the regular was the cake looking thing with ice cream) and pretty good. Nice contrast between crumble and jello.I'm not sure what happened with my chocolate mouse. For some reason it was very very spicy, so it wasn't good. I asked the other people in my party if their regular chocolate mousse was also spicy and they said it wasn't. Needless to say, I wasn't super excited about the food I had. No big issues, just not something worth the price.

We frequent Michelin star restaurants for a variety of cuisine's across the bay. I was excited to eat at Chez TJ, it's been a Mountain View establishment for a long time and in my early 20's I would walk by it frequently though I couldn't afford it at the time. Finally now in my 40's my wife and walked into Chez TJ...... Chez TJ has it's one star. I understand why they have their one star but to me the food was just OK when compared to the other options in the area. We opted in for the grand cru tasting as well and that was also, just OK. For the food the canapes were a highlight of the meal...which as it was our first course was sad. It wasn't really mind blowing nor was it boring afterwards. For the main I had the Guinea Fowl and it was great. My wife opted for the A5 wagyu and it was great. Everything else seemed to be quite lack luster. We also added the truffle supplement which came in the form of risotto and it wasn't really up to what my expectations or standards for one star are. For the wine we had a really great champagne, an amazing sauvignon blanc and what I think was a good burgundian pinot (can't quite remember) but after that we were served a just OK mead and a port that I've seen a million times as a desert pairing. The sommelier was knowledgeable and engaging, we liked him. Just a matter of taste I suppose, mead and port were not great. The other thing I would mention is that the menu while six courses has three savory components and three sweet components. I felt like this was overkill on the sugar side. For the price, experience and style of cooking/wine I'd opt into Plumed Horse, Selby's, Madera, Le Papillion or Village Pub again rather than go back to Chez TJ in recent future...maybe though we'll check it out again in a year or two and see how things are going.
Be the first to ReplyUnacceptable level of service.
You will leave hungry and will not be amazed by any dish. The wine was only good note. I've been in many Michelin star restaurants all over the World, and never has one counted the bread, the palate cleanser, or the chocolate in the goodie bag as a course! It is really just a 3 course menu... It is the first time that I wished I ate more of the bread. Not worth for the money, or the experience.
Be the first to ReplyWe just enjoyed a fabulous anniversary meal at Chez TJ.
The decor is traditional--an old Victorian home, classic Bernadaud china, etc. But the food is a modern interpretation of classic cuisine, and delicious. The overall vibe is laid back even with the formal setting. The night starts with amuse buche--ours included an outrageous tiny croque madame single-bite sandwich. Then we moved through the traditional progression of a formal French meal, always with a yummy twist. Eg, the "cheese" course is a cheese tart in a buckwheat crust. The fish & meat mains were luxurious--lobster, elk and we got the Wagyu beef, which is like gossamer threads of beef-flavored air, it's so tender. It is great not to have to go to SF or wine country for a spectacular meal.

the chefs tasting menu is super expensive but the items are just mehif you want this experience just watch the movie "the menu". it describes this place perfectlyoh don't make the mistake of ordering the white truffle risotto. it's porridge dressed up (see attached)came for our anniversary, got a printed note. can't write something on the dessert plate?told them about gluten free & low sugar requirement on the reservation, they completely forgot. My husband and I had walked by chez tjs many times on our way to Castro st and finally made a reservation to celebrate my husband's birthday. What an incredibly special evening! We had a few meal upgrades ( like the waygu beef and wine pairings). Each course was so well constructed and delicious. The wine pairings were perfect and harmonized so well with the food. My husband loved many items he normally hates ( like squash or carrot cake). The service was perfectly attentive without being overbearing. We felt well cared for and very comfortable throughout the meal. I brought home one of the dessert courses as an extra gift for our babysitter-- rave reviews all around. Thanks for a great evening, Chez TJ.
Be the first to ReplyOur experience at Chez TJ was tainted by a very poor wine
Our experience at Chez TJ was tainted by a very poor wine pairing:I had Chez TJ on my radar for a while and I was very excited to finally get a chance to try it! We visited the restaurant on a Friday evening.Once seated, the server came to share more details about the restaurant, the fact that the menu is not known until the food is in your plate, and present the couple extra options you could add on top of your regular tasting menu. The food was good, but a little bit repetitive for a roughly 8-course menu. We had game twice, and both sauce were quite similar. The desserts were overly sweet and lacked complexity. The amuse bouche were likely the most delicate part of the tasting. If you want to go to Chez TJ for the experience and surroundings, you will be very pleased. The food is good enough to make it an enjoyable moment. What really did not work for us was the wine tasting. We went with the Grand Wine Pairing (second tier out of 3 tiers total). What was wrong with the wines picked?- None of the wine, except maybe the desert wine, was a good match with the food. Eating/drinking them together made them taste worth that what they were tasting, revealing unpleasing acidity or alcool.- The wine poured were easy to source, not really special wines you could find at local wines stores. When the sommelier asked if we were happy with the pairing towards the end of the tasting, I explained that I was not. He very politely explained that they "should" pair well. I am sorry but that night they did not, and it spoiled our tasting.Overall, I would probably not recommend Chez TJ, unless you are just looking for a fancy location. You can have better food at other restaurant in the South Bay.If you are looking for a good wine pairing, I would definitely not recommend Chez TJ.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Chez TJ, and I have to say, it was one of the best dining experiences of my life. The restaurant is located in Mountain View, California, and it offers a unique blend of American and French cuisine. The focus on fresh, local ingredients really shines through in every dish. The atmosphere is elegant and sophisticated, and the staff is knowledgeable and attentive. Overall, I would highly recommend Chez TJ to anyone looking for a top-notch dining experience in the area. It truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Be the first to Replyon the outskirts of downtown mountain view, you would never
on the outskirts of downtown mountain view, you would never think this was a fancy michelin star restaurant looking at it from the outside. it looks like a house with a nicely lit backyard. but once you walk in the doors, there are rooms split with a few tables in each for a more intimate experience. they have a prefixed course meal with optional wine pairings. there are add ons you can do like truffle and wagyu. overall it compares with all the other 1 star michelins. the presentation of the food is amazing, the taste is amazing, and the service is amazing. some of my favorites were the bread/truffle butter, lobster tail, and wagyu. this meal lasted almost 4 hours but it didnt feel that long. we opted for the 150$ wine pairing which was not worth it since most of the bottles they served were about 20-40$ at total wine. they were tasty and they did pair well with each plate but now i know options for wine/charcuterie nights. theres a parking lot across the street along with street parking.

I've been meaning to try this place out for years, and finally got around to it with several friends. What a wonderful experience. Really nice ambiance, excellent service and the food was amazing. It is everything you would expect from a restaurant with a Michelin star. I do have an issue with the fact that they only have a single bathroom. I understand it's a historical building, but are you telling me you can't put a nice porta potty in the garden? It really detracts from what is otherwise a quite pleasant and elegant experience. I highly highly highly recommend getting a wine pairing. You can even split a wine pairing which is what I do because it's just too much wine for one person.
Be the first to ReplyWe had a memorable experience at Chez TJ for an anniversary.
Would highly recommend for special occasions. Their pre fixe menu is comparable to pricing at other Michelin restaurants but still not for the faint of heart. But we think it was worth it for the quality, service, and overall experience. The food service and pacing was excellent. We did not leave hungry, and the menu had a few fun surprises. We ordered additional truffles with the agnolotti and wagyu for the main entree - this wagyu was worth every penny.Gustavo was an incredible server - warm, informative, and very helpful. Overall, the service is wonderful. Asking to use the restroom can get a bit awkward - there's only one and it's discouraged to wait in the small hallway - but the staff was helpful and quick to facilitate our bathroom trips (as crazy as that sounds). The ambience is nice but potentially a bit quiet. We felt the need to talk quietly as the ambient French music and ongoing conversation among tables was hushed. The dress code is "formal, elegant," and jackets are "not required but appropriate," so we dressed up (think wedding guest).Definitely make your reservation a few weeks in advance if you want a res time before 8 pm. Our res started at 8 and we left around midnight. Overall, an unforgettable night.
