Sichuan Delight
We had dinner here and this hole in the wall did not disappoint. The service is quick and friendly. They don't serve alcohol but the food speaks for itself. All the dishes were very flavorable with just the right amount of spice. The stand out dih was the lion fish

Some friends and I went to this place for Christmas as we did not want to cook at home. This was the first time going to this restaurant. We waited for about 15 minutes for a table. We did not know we were supposed to order on line and waited at the table for quite a while until we called the waiter to take our orders. She then told us we had to do it on line. She could have given us instructions when we were assigned a table. The menu has a lot of frog and rabbit items. The food is very spicy and hot. You are expected to use chopsticks. I asked for a fork and sensed some disapproval. Overall you don't go there for a dining experience. They give you the food as it gets ready. Sometimes with a lot of time in between. Too heavy on the heat. Jalopenos are treated as vegetables. The best dish was the string beans.

We ordered take out from this restaurant in hopes of a different and tasty meal. We had the crispy chicken and the grilled chicken. On the positive side, the portions were large. However, the crispy chicken was more breading than chicken and half the dish was red chili peppers. The grilled chicken with vegetables was a bigger disappointment. The chicken didn't really looked grilled as it was mostly bones with very little chicken. I almost broke a tooth biting into a piece! The vegetables were tasty, and the sauce was spicy. Maybe it was the dishes we selected, but we were not satisfied with our order.

This is my first one-star review because I have never had a more horrible experience than this.
The four of us, including my 2-year-old, drove for about six hours to get to the location, which we heard from the word of mouth, that it was a great restaurant and we should really give it a try when we visited LA. When we finally arrived, it was about 2:20 PM and we signed up for the waiting list. The young waiter told us that we may need to order the takeout if there was no table available at 2:30, although the restaurant closed at 3:00pm. There was also a group of 3 that arrived just a minute before us who also signed up on the waiting list.
Then after we changed the kid’s diaper and came out, the same waiter told us that it was already 2:30pm and we had to order take out. We saw the group of 3 just got seated and another table had already paid and was ready to leave. We asked if we could sit at the almost-ready table. The answer to us was NO because they needed time to clean up and that would be a few minutes past 2:30pm.
Then we said we would order something quick and make sure that we leave at 3:00pm. After all, we drove all the way here and my 2-year-old was so exhausted and wanted a place to eat at that moment. The answer to us was NO because the last call was 2:30pm.
Then we told her our situation that we brought a kid visiting LA. If we ordered take out, we would have nowhere to sit and eat, not to mention it was raining outside. I almost begged them that if we could at least sit at the available table and eat our take out. The answer to us is still NO. Adding to that, the waitress at the cashier said the takeout was takeout and we could eat the take-out in the Starbucks nearby.
Lastly, we asked if we could talk to the boss. The answer to us was, of course, NO because their boss was not there and there was nowhere to contact the boss.
To be honest, I have never experienced anyone so rude, inflexible, and inconsiderate in my whole life, especially in the customer service industry.
We had to leave the restaurant because we had nowhere to eat the takeout at 2:40pm, 20 minutes before the restaurant closed. I still believe the dish may still be great, but the waiter and waitress they hired in this location really hurt the brand.
We are so disappointed by the customer service today. Hope the boss of the restaurant can see the review and improve the customer service.
Spicy food
typical schezwan style restaurant, food is peppery spicy instead of chilli type spicy, good food, good portion, good service, medium price, 🥵👍
Be the first to ReplySpicy and unusual menu
No waiting for four of us at noon on a Friday- the place began to fill up an hour later. Unusual menu with frog, rabbit, and intestines. Dishes had none or 1-3 peppers to indicate the level of heat from peppers. We ordered the cold jelly mung bean noodle (tasty), the tan tan noodles (our favorite of our selection), mapo tofu and the eggplant dishes (both tasty but too much chili oil), and the shrimp with crispy rice bits (delicious). Except for the noodles- servings were large and had leftovers to take homw. Good service.

There's a wide assortment of dishes at Chengdu Taste, and you can have a great meal there regardless of how much you can tolerate green peppercons, oily food, and food items you will not find in Iowa. My advice is to order in three dish increments, with two being safe and one being an experiment that you are willing to find out is a new friend or incompatible with your taste buds.
Your definition of safe will be different from mine, but there's Dan Dan noodles, Kung Pao, and the usual standbys - perhaps a bit spicier than typical.
Of the hyped items, I'm a believer in the Boiled fish in green sauce and so were my three teenagers, I think the cumin lamb is served in too small chunks, so all is left is crispy lamb chunks and no lamb character. I love their Ma Po Tofu, which isn't vegetarian.
When you walk in you will see lots of tables with skewers poking out of a pot, accompanied by a metal cylinder for the used skewers. You will find tree ear mushroooms as well as chicken feet on the skewers, which the teenagers didn't care for. There was a rabbit dish loaded with small bone particless?
But the tripe was great - get out of your comfort zone! You will have more choices for your next visit, or will at least make new mistakes.
Toothpick Lamb is to die for
We tried several things from the menu, but the Toothpick Lamb was the best. Tiny pieces of spicy lamb on toothpicks. The food is supposed to be hot and numbing but they must have scaled it down for us. Spicy but not painful.
Be the first to ReplyLove their spicy mung bean noodle
Had the spicy mung bean noodle appetizer dish which was very good. That is the best in the area. Also had Dan Dan noodle which was average. Spicy and numbing chicken was good (huge portion). Overall pretty good Sichuan restaurant.
Be the first to ReplySwimming in Oil
Yes, hot, and that's fine, but each dish was way way too greasy. Chengdu lamb was grisly and greasy, although nice cumin flavor, spicy eggplant was more mush in spicy oil, chicken with wild yams drowning in oil and noodles were not oily but not good. I know this place is supposed to be good, but good wasn't our experience. Didn't even want to take home the plentiful portions, mostly uneaten. Lots of people waiting, so maybe we ordered wrong. Water served in plastic cups. Service okay. Decor nondescript. $62 without tip for 4 dishes. An unusual menu, which Sparks interest, but it just doesn't deliver.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Food
This place specializes in Chengdu food, which spiciness is more numbing than hot. Quite a few specialized dishes with rather large portions.
Be the first to ReplyDoesn't compare to the mainland. You can find better in East LA
High prices.... for what? As this is advertised as traditional Chinese fare, I will review it as such. The dishes are literally 6x the price as in China. Surely we would receive higher quality ingredients and better service?
Nope. The service in China is better and they don't demand tips. Take a dish here, like gong bao ji ding (kung pao chicken). In china it is generally 10 RMB (less than 2 dollars) for the same portion. It includes leeks, Sichuan pepper, etc. Here it contains green onion and little to no sichuan pepper. Given that those two ingredients cost much more here, they are not that expensive. Sichuan peppers and the oil can be sourced at quite reasonable costs, you can see the price of a leek in any supermarket. This dish here is too sweet and not at all spicy.
So we are paying higher prices for an inferior good.
Gan bian dou jiao (fried green beans) here are not cooked at high enough temperatures. They are not crispy or dry and they do not have Sichuan peppers. Coming from a place called "Chengdu Taste," the capital of Sichuan, I am perplexed. Not to mention (oops) that I could taste the oil which was dripping to the bottom of the plate.
The la zi ji (basically spicy popcorn chicken here) in China is so crispy and spicy. It uses chicken with bones with the skin which makes it crispier. Generally little to no breading. One of my favorite dishes. Here it is cheap chicken breast with breading that is fried. Popcorn chicken.... smh.
I have been here exactly three times to try some of my favorite dishes each time. Each time I was disappointed. While this truly is traditional Chinese food, in comparison to China this is severely lacking and I have been to other Sichuan restaurants in the area which are of higher quality.
